Broadway and history combine in a timely look at the making of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning megahit Hamilton. The documentary film

HAMILTON’S AMERICA

delves even deeper into the creation of the show, revealing Miranda’s process of absorbing and then adapting Hamilton’s epic story into groundbreaking musical theater. Further fleshing out the story is newly shot footage of the New York production with its original cast, trips to historic locations, such as Mt. Vernon and Valley Forge with Miranda and other cast members.

our 24-hour radio reading services for the visual impaired, is pleased to share the story of science, technology, medicine, and humanity of human vision.

SIGHT: The Story of Vision tells stories of

individuals who struggle with vision loss and blindness including, an Iraqi war veteran’s vision loss due to a traumatic brain injury and a woman who is losing both her sight and hearing yet, refuses to stop achieving her dreams. The film also presents the complexities of human vision and the exciting future that lays ahead with new technologies and medicine only imagined a few years ago.

DEAR FRIENDS, I’m still hearing from viewers who loved the early episode of The French Chef with Julia Child, part of our 50th Anniversary celebration on September 6. What a treat it was to watch Julia (in black-and-white) making chocolate mousse 50 years ago… the very first show we Norm Silverstein aired on WXXI-TV! We also brought back a favorite episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and other commemorative programming across all of our services, including the Little Theatre!

I’m also pleased that we were able to celebrate our Golden Anniversary with a breakfast for our “founding members.” We heard wonderful stories about the early days of WXXI. We’re continuing to collect those stories. Here’s a few of our favorites: While I have grown old, WXXI has not. You are still fully involved in education, bringing all of us a full platter of educational programs from “Homework Hotline” to summertime learning; from adult literacy to resources for veterans. I myself can no longer go to Yellowstone due to health problems, yet WXXI has taken me there to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Thank you WXXI for allowing me to still visit those parts of the world that I love and enjoy.

What’s ahead in this Anniversary year? More great programming, the kind you only find on WXXI and PBS. America’s Hamilton, which follows the creation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical, premieres Friday, October 21 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV. The broadcast kicks-off our sixth annual PBS Arts Fall Festival, which presents diverse artists and performances from across the country on Friday evenings through December. Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Hart Hearing Centers, with locations in Brighton, Brockport, Fairport, Greece, and Irondequoit, has been serving the Rochester community since 1977.

Dr. Stephen Hart, Au. D., provides some important information about hearing loss.

Q. Is it true that ear buds are harmful? Are there other safer options?

Yes, it is true that ear buds can be harmful. However, you can still enjoy using ear buds if you practice some safe listening tips. Many MP3 devices have a volume limit which restricts the maximum volume level. Some ear buds have a soft silicone seal which helps block out external environmental sounds, so you don’t have to turn the volume up as high to hear the music. If others can hear your music, it’s too loud!

Q. What is tinnitus? Is there a remedy to minimize its impact?

Tinnitus is essentially the perception of any sound (ringing, buzzing, crickets, etc.) which isn’t actually there. Remedies to minimize its impact depend on the cause and nature of the tinnitus. The first step in this process would be to schedule a hearing test.

Q. Hart Hearing Centers is donating hearing loops to the Little Theatre. How will it help movie attendees?

A hearing loop is a technology that allows hearing aid users with a telecoil to directly connect into the audio system. The hearing loop converts the audio to a magnetic field which is then transmitted throughout the room. The telecoil within the hearing aids takes that magnetic field and converts it back to sound and transmits it through the hearing aid. This allows the hearing aid wearer to hear the audio directly through their hearing aids as if they are wearing headphones connected to the theater’s system. The other benefit is that any hearing aid wearer with a telecoil can use this technology simultaneously.

Q. What general advice can be offered to protect our hearing?

If you think it’s too loud, it is! Once you lose your hearing from noise exposure you can’t get it back. Because of that, if you have any concern that something may be too loud, use hearing protection. www.harthearing.com DR. STEPHEN HART, AU. D.

PBS ARTS FALL FESTIVAL

KICK OFF WITH CLIPS FROM HAMILTON’S AMERICA & MORE MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 7-9PM AT THE LITTLE THEATRE WXXI presents a sneak peek at the Great Performances documentary film, Hamilton’s America, and other art programs in the PBS Arts Fall Festival line-up. The event is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Robert Hammond, host of Stage Notes on Classical 91.5.

WXXI-TV premieres its sixth annual PBS Arts Fall Festival on Friday, October 21, with host Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton. The PBS Arts Fall Festival underscores PBS’ ongoing commitment to give audiences the best seats in the house to watch arts performances on air and online. The festival presents diverse artists and performances from across the country, including programs from Great Performances and Live From Lincoln Center, as well as the specials Bill Murray: The Mark Twain Prize, and Alan Cumming Sings Snappy Songs.

THURSDAYS AT 8:30PM, BEGINNING OCTOBER 13 ON WXXI-TV WXXI’s national health care series Second Opinion, with its Daytime Emmy nominated host Dr. Peter Salgo, kicks off a whole new season of intriguing medical cases Thursday, October 13 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV. The premiere episode, Opioids to Heroin Addiction, introduces you to a grandmother of twenty, who shares the story of hip pain that ended with a nine-year addiction to heroin.

This season the series also tackles lupus, lead poising, Endometriosis, borderline personality disorder, and more. Produced in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions, Second Opinion focuses on health literacy in an engaging, entertaining, and accessible way. A patient story provides the backbone of each episode as host Dr. Peter Salgo leads a panel of medical specialists through the twists and turns of one patient’s reallife medical mystery. The physicians then share the most accurate, up-to-date and trustworthy health information and treatment options. Second Opinion repeats Sundays at 12:30 p.m.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 9PM: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI Moderators: ABC’s Martha Raddatz and CNN’s Anderson Cooper. This presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which half of the questions will be posed directly by citizen participants and the other half will be based on topics of broad public interest as reflected in social media and other sources.

WRUR is pleased to bring its listeners the only live music and variety show airing nationwide today. “A Prairie Home Companion” with new host Chris Thile, features a unique blend of musical performances and comedy.

Chris, who takes over for the legendary Garrison Keillor, promises to take this Saturday night staple to a new level.

WEDNESDAYS AT 12:10PM, BEGINNING OCTOBER 5 ON CLASSICAL 91.5 Live from Hochstein with host Mona Seghatoleslami is back with a whole new season of performances by some of the finest artists in our area broadcast live from Hochstein Performance Hall. Each of these free “brown bag” concerts runs from 12:10-12:50 p.m., giving downtown business people, teachers, families, students, and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music during their lunch hour. The season kicks off with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of guest conductor Daniel Meyer on October 5, and runs through December 7 with Madrigalia performing their annual Cup of Good Cheer concert.

HIGH HOLY DAYS PROGRAMMING ON CLASSICAL 91.5 Classical 91.5 presents its annual, live broadcast from Temple B’rith Kodesh as they celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

With a fresh design and new Classical 91.5 logo, the re-vamped website features easier navigation to playlists, blogs, host information and classical music news. You’ll find a quick drop down to each of our local host’s playlists right in the menu bar. For nationally syndicated shows, visitors can either check out the schedule page and click on the name of the program, or find the program you heard in the easy A- to-Z listing on the program page. And, did you know that when you visit Classical915.org you can support the music you love by clicking on the ArkivMusic, iTunes, or Amazon links to download a piece or purchase a CD? It’s a simple way to give back to your classical music station.

Classical915.org is now responsive too, meaning that it looks great on desktop

computers, tablets, and smart phones. The stream has also been updated, making the music sound even better! And for listeners in the Southern Tier, there’s easy access to an up-to-date WXXY-FM 90.3 program schedule from the Classical915.org schedule page.
