Keynote Speaker ‘New expectations, new opportunities’ Lynne McClure Director, Cambridge Mathematics University of Cambridge Lynne has had a varied career in mathematics education, with experience which ranges from headship of a small primary school to Principal Lecturer and course leader at Oxford Brookes and Edinburgh Universities. Whilst living in Scotland she ran her own consultancy which took her all over the world. She is the author or editor of many books and articles, and is well known as a conference speaker and professional development lead. Lynne chaired the teams which attempted to advise ministers on the content of the new English National Curriculum. She was a member of ACME from 2009 to 2013 and remains on the Outer Circle. Lynne is a Chartered Maths Teacher and an invited Fellow of the IMA. She was delighted to be the President of the Mathematical Association in 2014/15, and takes up the position of Chair of ISDDE in 2017.
Lynne’s previous role was Director of the prestigious NRICH project (nrich.maths.org), based in the University’s Centre for Mathematical Sciences. She retains links there as she remains PI on the new DfE-funded UndergroundMaths (previously CMEP), an innovative A-level project (undergroundmathematics.org). Her current role is as Director of the new Cambridge Mathematics project (www. cambridgemathematics.org)
Workshops Details of all the workshops we will be running are given below, one or two of which may be repeated according to popularity. You will be able to attend three workshops, so please indicate your top five choices, in order of preference, on the booking form and we will do our best to accommodate everyone’s requests. Bookings submitted after Friday 17th June will be allocated to workshops where there are spaces.
Workshop A ‘Core Maths’ Angela Knight The 2017 Level 3 mathematics participation measure is nearly upon us. Schools and Colleges will need to look carefully at the provision for L3 mathematics post 16. Core Maths is one of the qualifications that is included in the measure to be reported. The workshop will explore the practicalities of teaching the new Core Maths qualification and is not exam board specific. The opportunity to get to grips with the requirements of the specifications and the problem solving ethos will be paramount. There will be a chance to look at some of the new problem solving activities and a guide to where to find help and resources. Delegates will leave the workshop ready to plan and implement the Core Maths qualification and with some new ideas to use in the classroom with other students. Angela Knight currently works for the Core Maths Support Program (CMSP) having retired last July from a 31 year career in Mathematics Education. She has spent time as a Head of Department, Senior Teacher, achieved the NPQH qualification, and worked as the Senior National Strategy Mathematics Consultant and Acting Adviser in Oxfordshire. Running courses is always a delight but her first love is classroom teaching.
Workshop B ‘Mechanics in the new A level mathematics’ Cath Moore The new Mathematics A level includes a compulsory mechanics element. This session will take an overview of these new requirements and will follow the development of the concept of Kinematics through from motion-time graphs at GCSE to the applications of calculus at A level. Cath Moore is a Central Coordinator for the Further Mathematics Support Programme. She has been head of a very successful maths department; a National Strategies consultant; and worked as an AST before joining the FMSP where she has responsibility for Student Enrichment resources, including the Maths Feast and professional development.
Workshop C ‘Statistics in the new A level Mathematics' Cath Moore With Statistics becoming a compulsory part of all AS/A level Maths qualifications, this session will be looking at the new content and sharing some ideas of how you could teach it. There will be a particular focus on large data sets and hypothesis testing. Cath Moore is a Central Coordinator for the Further Mathematics Support Programme. Workshop D ‘Supporting reasoning and problem solving in KS3' Ray Huntley The aims of the new mathematics curriculum are focused on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. This session will offer rich tasks which address reasoning and problem solving. As well as considering how such tasks might be used to enhance mathematical thinking, you will have the opportunity to discuss how and when they might be best employed in your classrooms, and also to do some mathematics yourself! This was a very popular workshop last year, which Ray will be repeating, but with different activities. Ray worked as a teacher for 18 years and is now involved in initial teacher education. He has spoken regularly at MA conferences and delivered mathematics sessions for CPD providers and Masterclasses at the Royal Institution. Ray is a member of the MA Teaching Committee (and the ATM General Council), he has written and reviewed for 'Mathematics in School' and ran an MA branch in Gloucestershire.
Workshop E ‘Developing reasoning at KS4’ Jude Stratton Mathematical reasoning underpins all mathematical activity, being an essential tool for problem solving and an important component in fluency. The challenge for teachers is how to support all pupils to develop their reasoning skills. In this session we will look, in particular, at ways to embed reasoning into your KS4 classroom; whether this is at Foundation or Higher. You will enjoy doing some mathematics and go away with plenty of ideas and resources for the classroom. Jude was until recently the Secondary Maths PGCE tutor at Oxford Brookes University where she enjoyed expanding students' perceptions of what mathematics is and how to teach it. Before that she was Head of Maths at a city comprehensive. In her present role she continues to support schools, teachers and trainee teachers in developing their practice for the classroom. She is passionate about the need to start with the mathematics.
Workshop F ‘Teaching for Mastery in Secondary Mathematics’ Jo Walker This session will cover the key elements of Teaching for Mastery, an approach which focusses on ensuring Students develop a deep understanding of Mathematics and we will look at how to create lessons to facilitate this. The session will be interactive with time to discuss concepts and develop ideas. You will be given some pre-planned and tested lessons and resources to help you create lessons for your own school. Jo Walker is a very experienced Mathematics teacher who visited Shanghai last autumn and saw teaching for mastery in action. She is KS3 Maths Lead at Wycombe High School and leads the Secondary Teaching for Mastery workgroup for the BBO Maths Hub. Sinead McKeever, KS4 Maths Lead, works with Jo to support this project. Together they worked closely with the Shanghai teachers who visited Wycombe High last November and from that exchange have developed lessons and resources so we now have a Teaching for Mastery approach in all our Year 7 and Year 8 lessons.
Workshop G ‘Developing Mathematical Reasoning at KS3’ Laura Balderson This session will give an insight into an ongoing national project in the area of pupils’ mathematical reasoning in Key Stage 3. Laura Balderson has been leading a group of teachers who have been developing the practice and culture in their departments to improve their own and their colleagues’ confidence when addressing the reasoning component of the new secondary maths curriculum. In the session we will give details of the projects aims, approach and results so far and also allow to you get involved in discussing and trying out some of these ideas yourself. Laura graduated from Kings’ College London with a BSc in Mathematics before gaining a PCGE. She has now been teaching for 10 years and is currently leads on Progress and Intervention at Beaconsfield High School. She also leads this KS3 Reasoning workgroup for BBO Maths Hub.
Workshop H ‘The wider Mathematical Landscape’ Paul Glaister This informal session gives you the opportunity to join in a discussion with Paul about mathematics education, and talk with him and ask questions about various aspects of this, including the current reforms. His biography below gives an overview of topics which might be of interest to you and which could form part of the discussion. Paul Glaister is Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Reading. As well 36 years’ teaching and leadership experience, his 408 publications span research in numerical analysis, mathematics/science education, and teaching and learning. Paul has reviewed A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics as a member of ALCAB, and reviewed Core Maths (CM) qualifications for the DfE. He is a consultant to the Core Maths Support Programme (CMSP); an External Expert Advisor to Ofqual working on the reforms to AS/A-level; a member of the Senior Advisory Boards for Teaching, Managing, Promoting CM, and the DfE/HE Group on CM. Paul is also a member of the: A-level Mathematics Advisory Board (ALMAB); DfE Standards & Testing Agency Task Review Group; Council of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications; External Advisory Board for Future Teaching Scholars. He is a Fellow of the IMA, a member of the LMS, a Chartered Mathematician, a Chartered Scientist, a qualified teacher, and a Fellow of the HEA. His outreach activities have included: Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses, Widening Participation Summer Schools, Enrichment Days, and STEMNET, and is also Strategic Board member of the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Maths Hub. Paul is currently briefing universities on Core Maths, and post-16 mathematics more generally, following an invitation to them from BIS to find out more about Core Maths. Paul is the Chair of the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK (JMC). The Mathematical Association will be providing a book stall for this event, where you will have an opportunity to view their secondary resources and publications. You will be able to purchase some of these on the day, or order from their on-line bookshop.
