Team WHS Top 30 Hockey

Congratulations to Lucy Young, Izzy Keeley (U17), Jemima Copeman, Sarah Pearce, and Millie Crosby (U15), who have all been selected for the England Hockey Performance Centre Squads 2017. This is a fantastic achievement.

Volleyball

Congratulations to Izzy Tucker (Yr 8) who has been selected for the England Volleyball Talent Pathway.

Team WHS is in the top 30 Sporting State schools of 2016. An indication of just how difficult it is to reach the list can be seen when you realise that reaching the top 30 means that we are in the top 1% of sporting schools in the country. This reflects competitive achievement in a range of sports throughout 2016 and honours those schools who take competitive sport seriously. This list is based on 20 different sports and more than 120 different national competitions, with more weighting given to success in a range of sports rather than single sports. This is a fantastic achievement by Team Netball WHS, and reflects the hard work and effort that Congratulations to Polly Campanini (Yr 11) who goes into sport here at WHS. has been selected for the England Netball Regional Training squad.

Individual Success

Swimming Naveesha Karunanayaka competed in the South Asian Aquatic Championship 2016, in the Under 18 category and won two bronzes in 200IM and 400IM and won a gold in the 4x100 free relay, with one of the Sri Lankan Olympians who raced at Rio 2016! Just keep swimming Naveesha!

Football

Hannah Dawbarn (Yr10) is currently playing football for Arsenal Ladies Centre of Excellence U16s. She trains 3 times a week — Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday— at the Arsenal Training Centre in London, and plays matches on Saturdays at the University of Hertfordshire, London. They are competing in a league, which we are currently top of and also the FA cup, where we have reached round 3 so far. /Cont’d...

Judo

Alisa Sydykova (Year 10) was competing on 12 November at the London Judo Qualifier competition for British Schools Judo Competition. She fought a ‘black belt’ competitor who was very strong; Alisa was unlucky to lose in the last seconds of the fight. Alisa won ‘silver’ and has qualified to participate in the British Schools Judo competition which will be in March 2017. In this she will be representing the school.

Netball

School Sport Magazine National Schools U12 Netball Cup. The Year 7 A team netball players are unstoppable at the moment; they are currently unbeaten in the league and have made it through to the quarter finals of the National Schools U12 Netball Cup. We are the last 8 in the country and are awaiting our opponents to play in the New Year. Watch this space. Keep it up girls, good luck!

Team Wins Hockey The U16 Indoor hockey team have gone from strength to strength in their first season together . On the 18 November they travelled to Southampton to play in the National Schools semi finals in which they came joint top qualifying them for the South Regional Finals on 4 December. The standard of hockey at the South Regional finals was exceptionally high and the girls played some outstanding hockey; unfortunately they just missed out on making the finals. This has been an exciting opportunity for all the girls involved, and shows how much potential they have to go even further next year!

U16 Netball The U16 Netball Team took part in the District round of the National Schools Competition on Saturday 5 November. This is always a tough round as there are many strong local schools, however, the girls played some exceptional netball placing them second overall. This means that they have qualified for the Regional Finals which take place on Saturday 28th January in Farnborough. The girls are receiving coaching from Sarah Grey and more recently from Ashleigh Neal (Mavericks Netball) to help them in their preparations. Huge thanks go to Mrs Grey and Mrs Lister for their continued support and coaching of our netball teams. Gook luck!!

Swimming National Finals

EQUESTRIAN

We had five girls make the senior team relay championships on the 19 December, which was held at the London Aquatic Centre, the Olympic venue!! The girls went out fighting hard making the finals in both the medley and freestyle events. Overall we placed 5th in both events. Huge congratulations to the girls and for making it through to the National Finals Championships.

WHS came first in Show Jumping at the NSEA qualifying competition at Addington Manor. This means they have qualified for the Winsor Horse show in May which takes place in the grounds of Winsor Castle.

Squash U15s National Schools

Football

U15As - Victory over Downe House A on 22 November means we finish the group in second place which should see us through to the knock out stages! Gina played first securing a straight forward 3-0 result. Kassia battled hard to finish the winner 3-2. Abbie and Hannah both took command of their games, two more 3-0 wins, Emma finishing the tie with another brave fight, this time going down 2-3. The overall score was 14-5.

U13 Team have played 5 games in the league and have scored over 15 goals collectively and have only let in 1 goal all season! They are currently undefeated which means they are League winners! Most recently they competed in a district competition in which they came a very close second out of 7 teams, just missing out on a trip to Wembley! Great work by the team this season. Massive thank you to our coaches Taz and Alex for their ongoing coaching, help and support.

U15Bs - Victory, this time over Downe House B with one more group match still to play against Wycombe Abbey (scheduled for Thursday 8 December). Wins for Nikhita and Rachel plus a walkover for Sumayah meant we were 3-0 up in games with 2 to play. Steph played some lovely shots but just missed out 1-3. Hannah S had some close games with her opponent but went down 03. The overall score was 10-7. Well done to all the girls. Huge thanks to our coaches and parents who have supported our girls in their achievements.

Staff Success

After a busy year of marathon racing and over 1,100 miles of running, Mr Houston has been working at improving his times for shorter distances and hitting the trails as the ground gets muddy, ready for the Cross Country Season. In September, he achieved a PB in Maidenhead Half Marathon, only then to beat that in the Windsor Half Marathon three weeks later. He has now achieved PB's in 5km, Half Marathon, Marathon and 50km this year and is searching out a fast 10km to complete the set. His most recent race saw him finish 17th in the Maverick Trail Series event at Stonor Park and these events are likely to be a regular feature on his race calendar for next year. Well done, Mr Houston.!

Sponsor A Square

‘Sponsor a Square’ is continuing to help raise money for our pitches with £10,000 raised to date.

England Volleyball Testing

Wycombe high hosted an England Volleyball talent pathway event on 7 November to which we had over 300 girls from Years 7-11 attend. The event saw the girls measure their height; sit and reach, squat jump and standing jumps. We have the individual results in for the students but are awaiting the talent ID results from England Volleyball to see who may have made it through to the talent pathway.

Sports Achievements

We encourage families to purchase a square in honour of your daughters, the family, or a friend of the family. If you run a local business, work in a large corporation or know of someone who does, you can purchase a square or two in the company’s name which is a great opportunity to advertise at the new facility. Squares range in price from £50 to £725. http://www.whs.bucks.sch.uk/PlayYourPart This year we have challenged each tutor group to raise £50 to sponsor a square. Please encourage your daughter to either contribute £2.00 to her Tutor or help organise a fundraising event for her Tutor Group. Thank you for your support.

We would like to celebrate your daughter’s sporting achievements outside of school. Please email us at office@whs.bucks.sch.uk with your daughter’s success stories for inclusion in the next edition and / or if you would like to become a Friend of Sport to help with fixtures, events, etc.
