“What Art Means to Me” By Freya Humphries N7, Y12 I would like to say once again Welcome to the arts presentation evening and thank you for coming. I’m Freya, a Year 12 student having recently completed my Art AS level which has been an exceedingly rewarding experience. From an exceedingly young age I have been involved with art from drawing everyday as a child to completing my bronze and silver arts awards, to the role of department leader and currently the running of the year 7 art clubs whilst taking art GCSE and AS level. Having completed my AS, it has truly made me appreciate the merits of the arts and how much this wonderful subject means to me. For Picasso ‘Art washed away the dust of everyday life.’ Similarly For me Art represents a creative expressive outlet into which I can channel my feelings and ideas which I may not be able to in other subjects; whilst simultaneously taking feedback and developing my analytical eye. A skill that is invaluable across disciplines and curriculums. Furthermore these expressions of ideas challenge our way of thinking and encourage us to take a closer look at the real meanings and in turn be inspired. I myself was inspired by this Fantastic art department when choosing my secondary school and due to the outstanding facilities and quality of the work; this department had a major influence in my decision to come to Wycombe High. Following this decision I have learnt many invaluable skills during my time in the art department such as persistence and problem solving on a regular basis and the importance of Teamwork and communication. It has also taught me the importance of hard work, dedication and key skills involving time management and planning. Art is also therapeutic and provides a break from an ever busy schedule and I relish this opportunity to take some time to examine my ideas and transfer these thought to produce a piece of art which I can be truly proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing staff who has always been there when I needed their opinions, advice and support and because of this supportive trusting environment it has enabled me to get the maximum out of my time in the arts at Wycombe high for which I am immensely grateful. Thank you for listening and I hope you have an enjoyable evening.
