BENJI KIRKPATRICK’S HENDRIX PROJECT

A well-known performer on the UK folk scene, Benji embarks on a new solo project, reinterpreting the songs of Jimi Hendrix; stripping back the layers of guitar, the psychedelia, and the era, revealing the songs in their pure form. Remembered for his pioneering, exceptional ability as a guitarist, on (and off) stage antics, Hendrix’s legacy extends to a wealth of great songs. Leaving behind the guitar altogether (Hendrix did that rather well…), Benji tackles his material on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, and will perform the songs of Hendrix like you’ve never heard them before.

40TH ANNIVERSARY LECTURE

DOUG SCOTT’S EVEREST:THE HARD WAY

WYESIDE COMEDY CLUB

Sat 3 October: 7.30pm £13.50 Full (£12 Concession)*

Fri 16 October: 8pm £9 in advance (£11 on the door)*

This autumn marks the 40th anniversary of the first ascent of ‘Everest: The Hard Way’, when the late Dougal Haston and Doug Scott made the first ascent of the mountain’s massive South West Face.

This month we have the deliciously dark Michael J.Dolan headlining, who has been described as having “skilful humour from the very dark side” by the Sunday Times. Michael is one of comedy’s great undiscovered secrets, although that will change very soon because as we write this his new show is storming the Edinburgh Festival.

In this special lecture Doug will tell of the epic expedition and climb, how his life led up to this defining moment, and where it took him upon his return from the summit. This is a brand new lecture is lavishly illustrated with Doug’s celebrated mountain photography which provides a very personal account of this legendary first ascent. * Credit/Debit Card Charge 50p per transaction

Also appearing is James Meehan - another act who has had an amazing Edinburgh Festival. James is a member of Gein’s Family Gift Shop and a writer / performer with Funz and Gamez, both shows picked up a huge amount of plaudits last year and continue to go from strength to strength. * Credit/Debit Card Charge - 50p per transaction

TOO POSH TO PUSH Fri 13 November: 8pm £12 Full (£10 Concession)* Sitting in a field, lost in a book about corporate greed, Tom heard a rustling. Looking up, he found hundreds of cows closing in on him. He was about to be crushed alive. He was furious. Had it been five years earlier then he would never have been reading a book like that, he would have seen the bovine riot forming, and he would have prayed his way out of it. This is the story of how Tom went from being a God-fearing Tory, to just another leftie atheist, standing in a field. Wales’ hottest property, Tom is a hilarious stand-up comedian and actor, best known for his comedy news show The Leak with Tom Price,Torchwood, and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

MARTYN JOSEPH Fri 20 November: 7.30pm £15 Full (£14 Concession)* Martyn is a mean guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style and a powerful show stopping voice – he has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”, but expect to also see shades of John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews in his performance. Martyn’s music is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. He delivers his music and social commentary with the same skill as a master craftsman, with his lyrical stories painting pictures that speak to all.

MARK THOMAS: TRESPASS

SEAN LOCK WORK IN PROGRESS

Trespass carries on from where Mark’s previous show 100 Acts of Minor Dissent left off. It is his usual odd mix of theatre, stand up, activism, a dash of journalism, and a dollop of mayhem. Mark asks the question: If the ramblers of the 1930’s were here now what would they do to open up the cities? How do we turn the skyscrapers and corporate squares into our playgrounds?

Sean Lock, one of the most fertile comic minds in Britain, will be running through some new material ahead of a major UK tour.

He sets out to try and carve a small space in the urban world where mischief and random chance can lurk.

Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence.

This Romeo and Juliet is rich in the swaggering colour of Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations, but MacMillan’s focus is always on the complex emotions of the young lovers – especially on Juliet as she journeys through the delirious happiness of first love to a shocked, adult perception of her fate. Juliet is one of the most coveted of all ballerina roles, and as MacMillan’s ballet enters its 50th year it resonates as deeply with audiences today as when it was first seen half a century ago.

Time tbc | USA | Dir. Danny Boyle Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen

Chef Adam Jones (Cooper) had it all – and lost it. A two-star Michelin rock star with bad habits to match, the former enfant terrible of the Paris restaurant scene did everything differently, and only ever cared about the thrill of creating explosions of taste. But now, In order to land his own kitchen and that third elusive Michelin star, he’ll need the best of the best on his side, including the beautiful Helene (Miller). Also starring Uma Thurman and Emma Thompson, Burnt is a funny and emotional story about the power of second chances.

Spielberg’s latest movie is a dramatic thriller that tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the centre of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on a near-impossible mission - to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot with a “head full of classified information”. Until Wednesday October 28 Four artists who live and work in Mid Wales, use different media and have very different styles of approach, but all take inspiration from the landscapes and people around them: JULIA HARRIS is well known for her affectionate representations of animals and atmospheric landscapes. She draws on memories of farm life from her childhood and the inspiring, ever-changing landscape of the Epynt. SEAN MILNE has a long career as a wildlife artist and natural history illustrator. His finely detailed work draws on the landscape surrounding him at his home in the hills of Abergwesyn.

SIMON LILLY uses photography, printmaking and sculpture to capture the interplay of the ordinary and the mysterious within the landscape. His studio overlooks the Irfon valley and the Epynt. PATRICIA KELLY is a member of the Craft Potters Association and South Wales Potters. Her hand built ceramics and acrylic paintings observe the characters and culture within the farming community, which include insider humour and references.

CONCESSIONS

Times/prices are correct at the time of going to press, but are sometimes subject to changes beyond our control.

Reserved disabled parking is available on our forecourt, and wheelchair spaces are available in both auditoriums. All disabled seating is allocated on a first-come first-serve basis as these facilities are limited due to the restricted nature of our Grade 2 listed building. To guarantee admittance we strongly recommend booking in advance via our Box Office on 01982 552555. Unfortunately wheelchair spaces are not bookable online at this time.

Wyeside stands prominently on the end of Builth Wells’ famous Wye river bridge, opposite the Llewellyn mural. The centre is only 100 metres walk from the Groe public car park, which is free from 6pm. When you leave the car park, turn left, walk past the Builth bull statue and Wyeside is facing you at the top of the rise.

ONLINE 24/7 at www.wyeside.co.uk BY PHONE on 01982 552555 IN PERSON at the Box Office We accept all major credit/debit cards - there is a 50p charge per transaction. Sorry - we can no longer accept reservations. All ticket orders must be paid for when you book. Latecomers may be asked to wait for a suitable point in the performance.
