THE GREAT WAR: FOLLOWING THE STORY... Wed 28 January: 7.30pm £15* (includes supper)

LLOYD LANGFORD: OLD FASHIONED WARM UP Fri 16 January: 8pm £6.50 In Advance (£8 on the door)* A brand new comedy show about what it’s like struggling to keep up with the pace of the modern world, and being in your 30’s but feeling about 70. In the last year, Lloyd has won a Radio Academy Award for his work on sketch show Here Be Dragons (BBC Radio Wales), been called an “Undiscovered genius” by The Guardian, appeared on QI, and also written and recorded a sitcom pilot for BBC Radio 4… but he’s still not happy!

The Dardanelles campaign is only a month or so away - but conscription is yet to come. How did it feel at the front in early 1915? - and for those worrying about them back at home in Mid-Wales? With the help of the Builth Wells Heritage Group, the award winning Brecon U3A group, and expertise from military historian Dr Tony Hampshire and local historian Gavin Hooson, we’ll ‘Follow the Story’ of the Great War, in memories, photographs and music, with a particular emphasis on how it touched the lives of our own families, and our own area.

ANNIE (PG)

DAN Y WENALLT (TBC)

118 mins | USA | Dir: Will Gluck Cameron Diaz, Quvenzhané Wallis

86 mins | UK | Dir: Kevin Allen Rhys Ifans, Charlotte Church

Annie is a happy, young foster kid who’s tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York. Originally left by her parents with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with mean foster mom (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinlyveiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s selfassured nature and bright, sun will come out tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

Starring Rhys Ifans, Charlotte Church with guest appearances from Gareth Edwards and Lord Kinnock and directed by Kevin Allen (of Twin Town fame), Dan y Wenallt is the first cinema production of Dylan Thomas’s brilliant, haunting play since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s 1972 film. Adapted by T. James Jones, with a screenplay written by Murray Lachlan Young, Michael Breen and Kevin Allen, Dan y Wenallt veers away from the traditional, literal reflection of Thomas’s original work and instead explores some of the more visceral elements of the funny, filthily fluid and magical dreamscape of the work whilst staying faithful to Dylan Thomas’s original text. Performed entirely in Welsh with English subtitles.

119 mins | USA | Dir: Alejandro Iñárritu Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis

Liam Neeson returns in the latest instalment of the crime thriller series as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose life is shattered when he’s falsely accused of a murder that hits close to home. Based on true events, Foxcatcher is a psychological thriller telling the story of the ill-fated relationship between wrestling champions Dave and Mark Shultz and their multi-millionaire benefactor. When Mark is invited by John du Pont to move on to his estate and help form a team for the Olympics, he jumps at the opportunity, hoping to step out of the shadow of his brother Dave. In this captivating adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling memoir, Reese Witherspoon plays the role of Cheryl, reeling from a difficult breakup, as she embarks on the gruelling 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail, walking through desert, snow, and over mountain ranges. Witherspoon is outstanding in the lead role, at turns gutsy and vulnerable – she wears her walking boots with urgency and pride.

Bill Murray is superb in the lead role of this comedy as Vincent, an old Vietnam vet who is an angry and misunderstood alcoholic without money or a future. Tim Burton’s latest drama Big Eyes tells the true story of Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose striking portraits of children with massive eyes became such a sensation in the Fifties and Sixties. But it is also the story of her husband, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who took all the credit for her work, claiming no one would buy art created by a woman, until a legal battle ensued to end his exploitation of her.

Debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp), armed only with his good looks and special charm, has to juggle angry Russians, the British MI5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist in a race across the globe to recover a stolen painting rumoured to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

From Walt Disney Studios, the team behind “Frozen” and “Wreck-It Ralph” bring you “Big Hero 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fan boy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

Wyeside is an independent not-for-profit charity - so every penny we make goes straight back into our programme. We couldn’t manage without our funders - and the fantastic help and support we get from our incredibly loyal band of Friends and Volunteers. THANK YOU ALL!

FRIENDS OF WYESIDE The Friends’ subscriptions provide additional funding for special projects. In the past these have included match funding for recent major improvements to the arts centre building and facilities, including the refurbishment of the Market Theatre and Gallery, the installation of digital projection equipment, the new artists’ space, Window on the Wye, and repairs and renovations to the stonework of the historic building. Donate from £5 per month (£60 per year), or whatever you would like to give! WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Apart from playing a vital role in our future, Friends organise special events, receive quarterly newsletters from Wyeside, are entered into a monthly draw for free tickets, and will receive the brochure hot off the press! HOW DO I JOIN? If you would like to become a Friend of Wyeside either pop in and pick up a form from the box office, download one from our website, or request one from Miriam Hall by calling 01982 553668, or by emailing marketing@wyeside.co.uk.

VOLUNTEERS Wyeside’s volunteers play a vital role in our continuing success. They help us in myriad ways - stewarding for live events and films, working on our bars, or helping our publicity efforts. We give training to develop your skills and CV. You get to see live events and films free, and the chance to work with Wyeside’s friendly team as we present 1000+ shows every year. If you are 16 or over and want to get involved, please call our volunteer coordinator Owen Lawrence on 01982 553668, or email him at owen@wyeside.co.uk. Or pick up an application form at the box office, or download one from our website. Please remember to include full contact details - your address, telephone number and e-mail address - and tell us about any particular skills or expertise you can offer to help keep Wyeside growing!
