DR JOHN COOPER CLARKE Sat 24 February: 8pm Ages 14+ £17

MARTIN & ELIZA CARTHY Wed 21 February: 7.30pm £16 Full (£15 Concession) The good Doctor Martin Carthy and his twice Mercury nominated daughter Eliza Carthy, join forces. Martin is a legendary ballad singer and guitarist who has influenced generations of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, while Eliza has been twice-nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and a multiple-award winner at the BBC Radio Two Folk awards. Martin has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. Eliza is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. More than most, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance.

John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original ‘people’s poet’. Since then his career has spanned cultures, audiences, art forms and continents. Today, JCC is as relevant and vibrant as ever, and his influence just as visible in today’s pop culture. His latest show is a mix of classic verse, extraordinary new material, hilarious ponderings on modern life, good honest gags, riffs and chat - a chance to witness a living legend at the top of this game. With special guests Clare Ferguson-Walker and Toria Garbutt.

WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY ADRIAN BERRY Thu 1 March: 7.30pm £14 Full (£12 Concession)

Martin is a boy with problems - an illness no one understands and a head full of sound and vision. So when an unexpected gift arrives on his birthday, Martin embarks on a thrilling journey in the footsteps of his obsession, leading him to discover some long-hidden truths about himself. What follows will change his life forever... Powerful and touching, music and magic realism collide in this darkly funny and moving tour-de-force solo show featuring Alex Walton and the voice of comedian Rob Newman. With a blistering Bowie soundtrack, the life of the pop fan is dissected in this tale of unnatural teenage wildlife.

Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect… Giuseppe Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto was his ‘best opera’. He had had to overcome state censorship to stage it – the censors objected to its depiction of an immoral ruler – but he was vindicated by the premiere’s huge success in 1851. Rigoletto was performed 250 times in the next 10 years and has remained one of the most popular of all operas.

Christopher Wheeldon, Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet, created his adaptation of Shakespeare’s late great romance The Winter’s Tale for The Royal Ballet in 2014. Building on the success of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,The Winter’s Tale received ecstatic praise at its premiere, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its intelligent, distinctive and emotionally powerful story, told through exquisite dance. It is now widely judged to be a modern ballet classic. The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love.Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. With powerful designs by Bob Crowley and atmospheric music by Joby Talbot,The Winter’s Tale is a masterful modern narrative ballet.

He was particularly associated with Jerome Robbins, their credits together including Fancy Free and West Side Story. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music.

KNIGHTON PAINTING AND SKETCHING GROUP

INTER-TIDAL

A COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS BY CLARE OWEN-MAYNARD

Open from Tuesday December 5 to Thursday February 1

Open from Tuesday February 6 to Thursday April 5

An informal group organised by tutor Audrey Bradley to provide weekly structured daytime workshops for artists of all abilities. Students are supported and encouraged to develop their own style and interpretation of the subject, painting and sketching with friendly tuition in a medium of their choice.

This exhibition represents a body of work by the artist Clare Owen-Maynard who lives near the Mawddach estuary near Abermawr/Barmouth and Dolgellau. The inspiration came initially from the point of the old signal box bird observatory on the estuary itself, many of the drawings were done in situ. Later in the project, paintings were made of the environ which leads the tides in and out of the sea to estuary and then to inland rivers, often described in coastal terms as the inter-tidal zones.

This exhibition shows examples of their paintings in various media together with a ‘Little Painting Challenge’ – postcard size paintings and sketches, one from each member, especially for this Wyeside Gallery exhibition. “We dedicate this exhibition to our member Christine Joan Rumble who died suddenly in October from a brain haemorrhage - she was well loved and we all miss her” Contact Audrey Bradley on 01544 350369

The paintings reflect a closeness to the waters moods and movements throughout the seasons. A short residency at the Conwy bird reserve coincided with the project to finally reference the two estuaries, capturing early morning light and some discreet bird life.

Wyeside is an independent not-for-profit charity - so every penny we make goes straight back into our programme. We couldn’t manage without our funders - and the fantastic help and support we get from our incredibly loyal band of Friends and Volunteers. THANK YOU ALL!

FRIENDS OF WYESIDE The Friends’ subscriptions provide additional funding for special projects. In the past these have included match funding for recent major improvements to the arts centre building and facilities, including the refurbishment of the Market Theatre and Gallery, the installation of digital projection equipment, the new artists’ space, Window on the Wye, and repairs and renovations to the stonework of the historic building. Donate from £5 per month (£60 per year), or whatever you would like to give! WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Apart from playing a vital role in our future, Friends organise special events, receive quarterly newsletters from Wyeside, are entered into a monthly draw for free tickets, and will receive the brochure hot off the press! HOW DO I JOIN? If you would like to become a Friend of Wyeside either pop in and pick up a form from the box office, download one from our website, or request one from Miriam Hall by calling 01982 553668, or by emailing marketing@wyeside.co.uk.

VOLUNTEERS Wyeside’s volunteers play a vital role in our continuing success. They help us in myriad ways - stewarding for live events and films, working on our bars, or helping our publicity efforts. We give training to develop your skills and CV. You get to see live events and films free, and the chance to work with Wyeside’s friendly team as we present 1000+ shows every year. If you are 16 or over and want to get involved, please call our volunteer coordinator Owen Lawrence on 01982 553668, or email him at owen@wyeside.co.uk. Or pick up an application form at the box office, or download one from our website. Please remember to include full contact details - your address, telephone number and e-mail address - and tell us about any particular skills or expertise you can offer to help keep Wyeside growing!

HOW TO FIND US

Satellite Live! & Live shows: We offer concession prices to under 18s, over 65s, students, disabled and unwaged customers. Film screenings: We can now only offer concessions to under-16s. Proof of age/status may be required. Support workers accompanying disabled customers can attend all Wyeside events free.

Times/prices are correct at the time of going to press, but are sometimes subject to changes beyond our control.

Reserved disabled parking is available on our forecourt, and wheelchair spaces are available in both auditoriums. All disabled seating is allocated on a first-come first-serve basis as these facilities are limited due to the restricted nature of our Grade 2 listed building. To guarantee admittance we strongly recommend booking in advance via our Box Office on 01982 552555. Unfortunately wheelchair spaces are not bookable online at this time.

SATELLITE SATELLITE SATELLITE

Wyeside stands prominently on the end of Builth Wells’ famous Wye river bridge, opposite the Llewellyn mural. The centre is only 100 metres walk from the Groe public car park, which is free from 6pm. When you leave the car park, turn left, walk past the Builth bull statue and Wyeside is facing you at the top of the rise.
