Ongoing research led by Extension Beef Specialist Steve Paisley at the University of Wyoming addresses the question of cow management and subsequent calf health. “The cow/calf sector is looking at increasing costs from feed and fuel, and we’re looking at how to manage costs without jeopardizing health and performance,â€? says Paisley. “They’re saying prices will remain stable this year, but we had a big drop from last year. We’re going to

have to reduce feed inputs to improve our situation. UW’s research focuses on reducing overall cow/calf input costs, of which one area is the development of replacement heifers. “There’s work out of Nebraska and North Dakota that looks at reducing input costs using rangebased heifer development, and developing them to lighter weights, says Paisley, adding that newer research looks at the subsequent calf crop. “A producer can reduce overall winter feed, but there may be larger impacts on the feedlot performance of that calf or on heifer reproduction

rates. It may be counterproductive, he says. He says range-based heifer development programs come back to traditional ranching practices that have been forgotten over time. “We’re looking at how to develop the heifer on range, rather than drylot, and what weight we need to get that heifer to in order to get her bred. Two research herds in western South Dakota looked at 65 heifer calves, one weaned Aug. 15 and managed on fall and winter range with distillers grain, while the other was weaned Nov. 1 and put on a traditional drylot program.

percent reduction in development costs by breeding heifers at a lighter endpoint,â€? says Paisley. “Breeding them at 53 percent rather than 58 can reduce costs by that much.â€? He suggests keeping back a larger percentage of heifers, managing them to a lighter weight and then choosing the bred heifers from a larger group. “We’ll select a little more for breeding if we can challenge that heifer a little more and see if she’ll breed for us,â€? he says. In addition to heifer development, Paisley’s looked at mature cows and the concept of fetal programming. “How do we manage during pregnancy, and what consequences does that have on the calf we produce?â€? he asks, noting there are certain critical times during calf development. “The middle third is when the internal organs, insulin and hormones develop, which is August through October for a spring-calving herd. “Moving into late gestation we see systems begin to mature, and the fetus is developing and there are critical points where if we restrict or stress the cow, that’ll impact the calf and it will show up in consequences once it’s born. If a producer retains ownership or develops his own heifers – that will come back to haunt him.â€? One result of negative fetal programming is calf birth weight. “Calves that are too small at birth may lack vigor, have reduced resistance to disease and may not be able to cope with stress because they have less highly mobilized fat,â€? says Paisley. Research shows restricting a cow in the last trimester UHVXOWV LQ D ÂżYH SHUFHQW GURS LQ live calves and an 11-pound drop in calf birth weight. “Which isn’t always a good thing,â€? notes Paisley. “That also impacts the cow, and the

Data from North Dakota State University and the University of Nebraska analyzed impacts of dam nutrition on the growth and reproductive performance of heifer calves in the Sand Hills. Two groups of springcalving cows were fed in their last trimester either no supplement or a one-pound 42-percent supplement cake. Following that they went on grass hay or sub-irrigated meadows. “The interest thing is that, in the three-year study, the effects of supplementing in the last trimester only resulted in a two-pound difference in birth weights, but a 17-pound different at 205-day weights,â€? says Paisley. “Protein supplement fed prior to calving impacts weaning weights.â€? “The main focus of that study was to use the distillers’ grain, because we’ve seen more and more use as the ethanol industry has grown, says Paisley. “They’re a good product, with 115 to 120 percent the energy value of actual corn because the fat content is higher. In the study the rangebased heifers were weaned, backgrounded and pastured Sept. 25. They were fed increasing amounts of distillers’ grains, up to 6.4 pounds per day Feb. 12 and down to two pounds per day prior to breeding. The drylot heifers were fed a traditional silage/ hay/grain total mixed ration. The study’s target weight for the heifers at breeding was 53 to 58 percent of mature weight. Bulls were put in for 25 days after the groups were synchronized and data was collected through the cows’ fourth pregnancy. “The study found that those heifers developed to 53 percent of mature weight had a 92 percent pregnancy rate, while only 88 percent of the heavier heifers were bred, says Paisley. “They found that lighter weights didn’t jeopardize the heifers, and I think we’re rethinking a lot of that traditional data that says heifers should be developed to 65 percent of mature weight. He says now that cattle have more potential for growth, maybe producers can begin to rethink target weights. “Developing heifers to lighter weights may reduce overall costs. A producer would challenge his management and operation to put more weight on over a shorter period of time, but studies have found it doesn’t affect pregnancy rates. He says supplementation around the time of breeding has been shown to improve conception rates. “You can have a 20 to 30

He emphasizes strategically supplementing a cowherd. “If you look at heifer fertility and weaning weights, we can pay for the supplement right there. Paisley presented research on cow management and calf health at WESTI Ag Days in Worland in early February. An interesting aspect of that study, says Paisley, is that the calves on improved pasture were a little fatter. edges challenges to the simple rules. “There are all the real-world challenges to implementing these strategies. First of all, it’s someWLPHV GLIÂżFXOW WR PHDVXUH and keep track of all of one’s expenditures. You can keep receipts and vet bills, but are you keeping track of the amount of time you VSHQG WUHDWLQJ FDWWOH"´ VKH asks. “Not many people do, so when you think about if it was worth it, you don’t always have all the costs written down.â€? She says another chalOHQJH LV ÂżJXULQJ RXW ZKDW \RXU WLPHÂśV ZRUWK LQ WKH ÂżUVW place. “Even getting the right numbers for expenditures can be tricky,â€? she says. A second challenge is comparisons. “You’ve got to be DEOH WR VD\ WKH ÂżUVW dose of penicillin saved you a certain amount in losses. How many people NQRZ WKDW" )RU VRPH

it’s easy, for others it’s not, she notes. “It can be hard to quantify expenditures and how much loss we’re preventing by doing an activity. Lastly, the fact that disease is not a certain thing only compounds things. “You don’t know for certain you’re going to get a disease, and it’s not a guaranteed outcome, says Peck. “That throws a wrench in the whole works. As economists we need to know expenditures and how losses will be affected by our activities. Peck addresses the third concern, “It’s a tough topic and requires advanced economic theory to deal with, but I can give you a sense for how we think about the problems. Sometimes just the framework alone is helpful in dealing with a problem. “The probability that your animals will catch a disease is often less than 100 percent, and at the same time you can take precau-

tions and your herd may be infected anyway. You could take no precautions and end up not getting the disease. It’s a crapshoot,â€? she says, adding, “You can do things WR LQĂ€XHQFH WKH RXWFRPH but it’s very rare you can do something to guarantee the outcome.â€? “The trouble is, you still need to make management decisions,â€? says Peck. “Uncertainty makes it so that we won’t know what the loss is, and how are we supposed to make a comparison if loss LV QRW D FHUWDLQ WKLQJ"´ She says a further complication is translating a reduction in disease probability is translating that EHQHÂżW LQWR GROODUV The answer to this is what economists call an expected value. Using the example of sheep dip to help prevent bluetongue, Peck says there are two options – to use or not use sheep dip. However, that’s where the uncertainty comes in. “If I Continued on next page

I could get bluetongue with a 10 percent chance, or not get bluetongue at a 90 percent chance. She stresses the numbers in her equations are purely hypothetical and do not relate to scenarios in reality. She says following those possibilities, the next piece LV ¿QDQFLDO FRQVHTXHQFHV – the cost of bluetongue if a producer chooses not to use sheep dip and does get bluetongue. You may lose a

portion of your herd, but that cost has two pieces – loss and expenditure. You lost money to death loss, but also didn’t spend any money. If you didn’t use sheep dip and you didn’t get bluetongue, then both your loss and expenditure are zero, and that’s where expected values come in. “We’ll weight those two possibilities by the probability of them happening, says Peck. The same goes for if a producer does decide to use sheep dip. There are still two possibilities, but the prob-

Feuz says beef customers dedicated Amid news of decreased consumer spending and falling stock prices, the beef industry has its bright spots. Market analyst Dillon Feuz says overall protein purchasing patterns point out a dedication to beef. “So far the data has not shown that consumers have really cut back on beef consumption,â€? he says. “They’ve just altered that consumption.â€? The demand for middle meats like the ribeye and loin has softened, but grinds and economy cuts from the chuck and round have grown in popularity. At the same time, consumer dollars keep voicing a preference for high quality, DFURVV DOO FXWV &HUWLÂżHG $QJXV %HHI //& &$% VHW D UHFRUG IRU WKH ODUJHVW -DQXDU\ sales in the history of the company at 54 million pounds. Feuz says the Choice/Select spread, down to the lowest levels since 2005, might be misleading as a market signal right now. “There is so much going on where the overall economy is just changing all the historical relationships,â€? he says. “It’s hard

to tell what is happening because of some current supply-demand situations within the beef market, and how much of it is just overall economics driving prices lower.â€? While the supply of commodity Choice beef is up more than three percent over last year, the effect of that greater supply of prodXFW LV PDJQLÂżHG DV VKRSSHUV WUDGH GRZQ WR lesser cuts. “That’s probably the main factor now pressuring the Choice/Select spread, just that the middle meats aren’t selling as well,â€? Feuz says. The past few years, the lack of exports WR .RUHD DQG -DSDQ NHSW SUHVVXUH RQ WKH Choice/Select spread, too. “When they were out of the market, even though we weren’t necessarily producing more, we effectively had more Choice product in the U.S. market,â€? Feuz says. “When the economy stabilizes and that fear factor is gone, if we’ve maintained our customer base, we’ll be in a much better position,â€? says Feuz. “Prices will rebound much quicker than if people had gone away from beef to pork or poultry.â€?
