oh hay, check out one of wyoming’s top crops In Wyoming, hay is the staple winter livestock feed for most ranchers. At the Wyoming State Fair, producers will have the chance to boast just who has the best. The Premier Wyoming Hay Show will allow guests a unique chance to catch a glimpse of its production in Wyoming at the the Wyoming Livestock Roundup tent on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. An award presentation will follow at 3 p.m. The public is invited to participate in their own judging of the entries. University of Wyoming (UW) Extension will coordinate a people’s choice judging format from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 through Friday, Aug. 19 at the fair. There’s more to hay than just baling it. The quality checks include physical characteristics such as maturity, texture, leaf capture and retention, bale quality, color, odor, foreign material and mold – all of this is prior to evaluating the forage analysis. In rendering the best of the best, the top crop decision takes both the forage analysis and the evolution of the physical characteristics into consideration. The process for competitors to enter is detailed. To participate in the Premier Wyoming Hay Show, entries must have core samples taken by UW Extension educators. The samples are then sent to the Forage Analysis Laboratory. A three-judge panel will base their decision on Premiums in three areas – alfalfa hay, grass hay and mixed hay. The Wyoming Hay and Forage Association awards the Alan M. Gray Best of Show trophy plaque, buckles for champions in the open and young producer division, plaques for category grand champions, rosettes for champions, ribbons for first through sixth place and cash prizes for winners.
The nerveless nocks bring thrilling entertainment to this year’s fair The Nerveless Nocks are among the most respected aerial stunt artists in the world. Since 1954, The Nerveless Nocks have been thrilling audiences across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and world-wide. Stop by a Nerveless Nocks performance to see daredevil stunt riders race motorcycles in a 17-foot steel globe and balance motorcycles on a thin-stretched steel cable; aerial performances on a revolving pendulum; award-winning “Nock the Clown” entertainment; and much more. Be prepared to be amazed by these death-defying aerial maneuvers!

Join us in celebrating Wyoming’s rich history and promising future. We all depend on healthy livestock, soil, and wildlife. However, invasive species are a major threat to Wyoming’s agricultural way of life. The good news is there is a simple way you can help reduce the spread, like using certified weed-free hay. We’re counting on you to help keep the cowboy state wild and beautiful.

Swine shows feature youth and their pigs
There will be a couple of chances to see the best in swine at this year’s Wyoming State Fair (WSF). Young exhibitors showcasing their pigs happens to be one of the most popular events at the WSF. Fairgoers can see the Champion of Champions Market Swine Challenge on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. The event is an educational competition designed to provide an analysis of improved swine selection and pork quality for the consumer by highlighting the champion market hog from each county in Wyoming and its exhibitor. Don’t go too far, because the 4-H Swine Showmanship will immediately follow. Swine time will continue on Thursday, Aug. 18, beginning with FFA Swine Showmanship at 1 p.m., immediately followed by the Youth Market Swine Show. The final show on Thursday will be a fun time at the Youth Market Swine Best Pen of Five. This is where hogs will be judged on overall appearance, uniformity and market pork quality and showmanship. Of course, appearance and attitude of exhibitors is also considered. Friday, Aug. 19 is the last day showcasing swine. Taking center stage will be the Youth Breeding Swine Show at 1 p.m. This is where
exhibitors display Duroc, Yorkshire, Hampshire, crossbred, any other colored breed and any other white breed gilts, as well as junior and senior boars. Immediately following will be the Wyoming Vocational Agriculture Teacher Market Swine Jackpot Show.

wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame
Ag advocate honored for service to the industry Scott Keith is honored as one of the 2022 Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame inductees. Scott grew up ranching near Kaycee and developed a passion for agriculture at a young age, according to his loved ones. He was extremely involved with Wyoming agriculture and left a lasting impact on the state. Scott passed away in 2020. “Scott was a passionate advocate for the livestock and forage industry in Wyoming and a cherished friend,” writes nominator Cindy Garretson-Weibel. Ag involvement Scott served as a spokesperson for Wyoming agriculture and advocated for the ranching industry throughout his lifetime. “Scott was always trying to better the agriculture industry in Wyoming and the producers he cherished,” Cindy says. Scott attended Casper College (CC) and the University of Wyoming (UW) to receive an associate degree in agriculture and a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness. During the 1980s, Scott worked as an ag loan officer for the Production Credit Association, then First Interstate Bank in Casper. Scott was able to develop lifelong relationships with ag producers during this time.

Scott worked for MoorMan Manufacturing through the 1990s as a district sales manager and an area sales manager, where he “excelled in leadership development, whether it was developing an employee, a colleague or an agriculture producer,” says Cindy. He joined the Wyoming Business Council Agribusiness Division in 2002 as the forage and co-op development program specialist. He was then promoted to the livestock and forage program manager. “Scott was responsible for the promotion of the Wyoming hay and forage industry, and in 2005 he revitalized the Wyoming State Fair Hay Show,” says Cindy. “Scott continued to showcase the hay industry and generate excitement and enthusiasm about Wyoming hay and forage across the U.S.” Scott, along with seedstock producers, worked to develop the Wyoming Livestock Genetics Association to promote livestock genetics in Wyoming. “Scott loved good cattle and few could judge cattle as well as he could,” says Cindy. “He had a knack for recognizing excellent genetics.” Scott initiated the development of the Future Cattle Producers of Wyoming program to get youth involved with cattle. Through this program, a high school student was paired with a donated heifer, and an experienced seedstock producer mentored the student. The emphasis was to educate youth in cattle production with a real-life opportunity to raise cattle. Scott joined the BigIron Auctions team in 2016 as an area sales representative and was later promoted to
the district manager. “Scott’s passion for Wyoming agriculture lived on as he was able to help producers sell and buy equipment,” says nominator Kurt Campbell of BigIron Auctions. He was also involved with the Wyoming Wool Growers Association and Wyoming Stock Growers Association, as well as served as chairman for the Wyoming AgXpo. Community service Aside from Scott’s extensive involvement within the agriculture industry, he was also involved with the local community. Scott served on the Casper Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee, the Natrona County Conservation District and he served as the president for the Casper Swim Club, the Kelly Walsh Booster Club and the Kelly Walsh Quarterback Club. “Scott was truly a Wyoming ag professional,” says Kurt. “His love for Wyoming and all facets of the ag industries motivated him to be the best he could be. He will be sorely missed, and his career and personal efforts will live on.” In honor of Scott, a $1,000 scholarship was set up for one UW student and one CC student who is majoring in agricultural business or a related degree. Scott Keith will be honored and inducted into the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame at the annual picnic set for Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Riverside Park in Douglas. Wyoming Pioneer Association holds rich history
Wyoming’s Old Timer’s Association is the predecessor group to the Wyoming Pioneer Association, created in 1914. Members of the organization were instrumental in helping Wyoming earn statehood and had been meeting in a less formal capacity since 1884, according to the organization’s web page. Two hundred seventy-three colorful characters from all across Wyoming were in Douglas for the 1914 event. Registrants noted their name, the year they arrived in Wyoming, where they lived and their occupation. The earliest pioneers came to Wyoming in 1855. State Fair Commission President Russell Thorp oversaw the meeting and creation of the organization in 1914. According to the Wyoming State Archives, Wyoming Gov. Joseph M. Carey spoke to the group from the steps of the Agriculture Hall. Annual dues were established at one dollar. Lifetime memberships were available to those who lived in Wyoming prior to 1857 at $10. Those who became residents after July 10, 1890, the

day Wyoming earned statehood, were charged $15 for annual membership. They continued to meet every year at the Wyoming State Fair (WSF). Beyond the forming of the Wyoming Old Timer’s Association, the Wyoming State Fairgrounds was bustling with action in 1914. Hereford cattle largely filled the cattle barn and Clydesdales and Percherons were among the exhibits. On Sept. 15, 1926, at the Princess Theater in downtown Douglas, President John Hunton called to order the first annual meeting of the Wyoming Pioneer Association. Over the course of the WSF, the Wyoming Pioneer Association will host several fair-time activities and gatherings. The Wyoming Pioneer Association welcomes new members and an opportunity to share the many interesting tales from the chapters of Wyoming history. Their annual meeting is set for 10 a.m. on Aug. 18 in the Ruthe James Williams building. For more information, visit wyomingpioneerassociation.com or call 307-351-6617.

Andrea cooley recognized as 2022 educator of the year Wyoming Agriculture in the Classroom (WAIC) named Andrea Cooley, a fourth grade teacher at West Side Elementary in Worland, as the 2022 Educator of the Year. WAIC was formed in 1986 with the vision to help students understand Wyoming resources. The statewide nonprofit is committed to making a difference and provide educational resources. A highlight of the program is the bookmark contest. Within the last seven years, the focus has been on developing a curriculum and finding educators who will champion the resource for their students, classrooms and their school. Cooley is a teacher who has done just that. Cooley has inspired the movement to introduce WAIC curriculum, and her entire grade-level team has used the Wyoming Stewardship Project curriculum extensively inside their classrooms. Wyoming Stewardship Project The Wyoming Stewardship Project is aligned to the Wyoming Content and Performance Standards, focusing on science and social studies. The project focuses on second through fifth grade and has three units for each grade level: agriculture; minerals and

energy; and outdoor recreation and tourism. The Wyoming Stewardship Project only comes alive for students when a teacher tells the story and connects the story to the community. Cooley has been the driving force in creating a new school garden and partners with local services, including the Washakie County Extension Office, the community garden and other businesses in the area. The garden has provided many hands-on experiences for students, and the food produced in the garden has been donated to over 100 families. WAIC recognition WAIC Vice President Megan Degenfelder was able to surprise Cooley and recognize her before the end of the school year. Degenfelder commented, “As a board member, we don’t always get to see the work of WAIC in the classroom. It was such an honor to surprise Ms. Cooley with the award and hear students and parents alike cheering and chanting her name. Our teachers really make the difference in bringing this curriculum to life.” Her students truly enjoy learning through the Wyoming Stewardship Project and from her. She

hop on over to the WSF rabbit show
Cute, fuzzy, fluffy and full of hop – who doesn’t love these adorable creatures affectionately known as rabbits? These furry friends will have their time to shine at the Wyoming State Fair (WSF) on Friday, Aug. 19 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Event Tent. The Youth Rabbit Show allows 4-H and FFA members the chance to demonstrate their ability to show their passion for the rabbit industry. The show will open with 4-H and FFA Showmanship, immediately followed by the Youth Rabbit Show.
These beloved creatures are guaranteed to bring smiles to guests’ faces. Did you know a baby rabbit is called a kit, a female is called a doe and a male is called a buck? Rabbits are amazingly smart creatures. They can perform an athletic leap, known as a binky, when they’re happy – performing twists and kicks in mid-air. They can jump as high as 90 centimeters in one leap. You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to see these adorable creatures at this year’s WSF!
WSF endowment provides funding The Wyoming State Fair (WSF) Endowment was passed by the Wyoming Legislature in 2018 with the goal of providing a more stable and consistent funding avenue for the future of the Wyoming State Fairgrounds and Event Complex. In support of the endowment, the WSF organized a virtual auction which contributed 100 percent of funds to the WSF. The Inaugural WSF Endowment Auction was held June 27 from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The auction featured exclusive items, not available anywhere else, to enhance guests’ experiences at the WSF. Visit wystatefair.com/endowment/ for more information on the WSF Endowment and to donate.

Honoring Our Roots Growing Our Future
Learn more at wyomingbusines.org
The cooperative difference Electric cooperatives are deeply rooted across our Wyoming communities. Many years ago, ranchers, farmers and folks from all walks of life came together to create their electric co-ops. They brought the benefits of electric power to drive the Cowboy State forward, and we’re still here today, delivering reliable and affordable power.
The West’s not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperatives, including Tri-State and Basin Electric, help power Wyoming’s electric co-ops. Bringing power to the people. That’s the cooperative difference.

Come check out the alpacas and llamas
Several youth divisions will take center stage with their popular alpacas and llamas at the Wyoming State Fair. This unique showcase will take place Saturday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Grass Arenas. Alpacas are related to llamas, which are domesticated versions of another wild Andean ruminant, the guanaco. While llamas are used as pack animals, alpacas are raised mainly for their soft wool. Llamas are very social animals with lifespans of nearly 20 years. They can grow as much as six feet tall, their fiber is very versatile and they can shoot green spit up to 10 feet away. The competing classes in the Llama and Alpaca Show will include costumes, obstacles and public relations. It’s a fun time for kids who get to dress up
their animals and complete in physical challenges. Each class is divided into different age divisions. The groups include ages eight to 10, 11 to 13, 14 to 18 and FFA.
Sheep shearing demonstrations feature impressive shearers Wyoming is a top wool producing state, and it takes skilled, dedicated sheep shearers to ensure wool is sheared safely and efficiently. Sheep shearing is no easy task, and it typically takes a lot of training and hard work to become a successful shearer. Visit the Wool Pavillion Saturday, Aug. 20 at 1:30 p.m. to watch talented shearers do what they do

best. This demonstration offers the opportunity to understand what goes on behind the scenes of wool production. You will be amazed how quickly and accurately the sheep are sheared. This event is something the whole family will enjoy, and everyone can learn something new about the wool industry!

WSF holds horsemanship contest for youth In typical Cowboy State fashion, 4-H and FFA members from across the state bring their horses to the Wyoming State Fair (WSF) to compete in a variety of horsemanship competitions. Youth have been preparing all summer for halter and performance classes and Western and English showmanship. The two-day event kicks off on Monday, Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. The horse show starts with the haltered classes. In halter classes, exhibitors lead their horses through the arena while being judged on balance, conformation and breed characteristics. The WSF allows youth to exhibitor all recognized breeds of horses, as well as offering mule and donkey classes. Each bred

class has specific expectations the judge requires. The first day also features performance classes where exhibitors demonstrate their ability and their horse’s ability to perform. Horse and rider teams memorize specific patterns and execute spins, lead changes and gait changes for both showmanship classes and performance classes including reining and pleasure. Horse exhibitors also have the opportunity to demonstrate their traditional rodeo skills at the WSF with contest like goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending, and roping. All around, horse showmen compete to win champion honors in their respective events.
