Future of agriculture in Wyoming shines bright

ECO-SHRED BEDDING

Welcome to the 109th Wyoming State Fair! Each year, we look forward to the fair because it’s an amazing opportunity to showcase our agriculture, our entrepreneurs and our young people in this vital industry. Since 1905, the Wyoming State Fair has been an agriculturally focused event and that is no different today. For many, the Wyoming State Fair is the summer meeting place of our industry where families come to see friends, share information and do business. Over the years, there have been additions to this focus to make it a family friendly, affordable event with enterDoug Miyamoto tainment options and educaWyoming Department of Agriculture Director tional opportunities for everyone. Even with these additions, the agricultural core remains the same. Every August, young people from across the state converge on Douglas to participate in the Wyoming State Fair in hopes of bringing home a title from the culminating event of their year. There are a lot of great entertainment options and vendors to see at this year’s fair, but the activities we are always the most excited about as the Wyoming Department of Agriculture happen in the barns, show rings and exhibit halls. The young people who come to compete at the fair each year are some of the best our state has to offer. Their hard work, dedication and work ethic are on full display during the fair. Do yourself a favor and walk through the barns and exhibition halls to visit with these exceptional 4-H and FFA members. Learn more about their animals, their projects and the time and effort these outstanding young people have dedicated to them. Visiting with these kids will help you walk away with a deeper understanding of the agriculture industry in Wyoming and more confidence that the future of Wyoming is bright. Along with this, if you are interested in helping ensure the future of the Wyoming State Fair, I encourage you to contribute to the Wyoming State Fair Endowment Fund. Your donations to this important fund will help stabilize the funding stream and sustain this incredible 2021 Wyoming State Fair and Rodeo Official Guide

event into the future. After more than 100 years of success at the Wyoming State Fair, the WSF Endowment was established to make sure the fair flourishes for the next 100 years. If you are interested in contributing, visit the Wyoming State Fair webpage or app for more information. Finally, thank you to the Wyoming State Fair Board, staff, volunteers, sponsors and others who put a lot of time and effort into planning the fair and preparing these beautiful fairgrounds. I’m confident you will all have a great time, and I look forward to seeing you at the Wyoming State Fair! Doug Miyamoto Wyoming Department of Agriculture Director

compete in a variety of horsemanship competitions. Youth have been preparing all summer for halter and performance classes and Western and English showmanship. The two-day event kicks off on Monday, Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. The horse show starts with the halter classes. In halter classes, exhibitors lead their horses through the arena while being judged on balance, conformation and breed characteristics. The WSF allows youth to exhibit all recognized breeds of horses, as well as offering mule and donkey classes. Each breed class has specific expectations the judge requires. The first day also features performance classes where exhibitors demonstrate their ability and their horse’s ability to perform. Horse and rider teams memorize specific patterns and execute spins, lead changes and gait changes for both showmanship classes and performance classes including reining and pleasure. Horse exhibitors also have the opportunity to demonstrate their traditional rodeo skills at the WSF with contests like goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending and roping. All around, horse showmen compete to win champion honors in their respective events.

Producers boast Wyoming’s top hay in show In Wyoming, hay is the mainstay winter livestock feed for many ranchers and a leading crop in terms of value of production. In the Cowboy State, hay comes in second on the commodity list, only after cattle and calves. At the Wyoming State Fair, attendees can catch a glimpse at hay production in Wyoming at the Premier Wyoming Hay Show located in the Wyoming Livestock Roundup Tent. To participate in the Premier Wyoming Hay Show, participants must have core samples taken by University of Wyoming Extension Educators. The samples are then sent to the Forage Analysis Laboratory. Entries can be made in either the open division or the young hay producers division, based on the hay producer’s age. A three-judge panel will base their decision on

22

physical characteristics such as maturity, texture, leaf capture and retention, bale quality, color, odor, foreign material and mold, prior to evaluating the forage analysis. The final decision takes both the forage analysis and the evolution of the physical characteristics into consideration. Premiums are given in three areas in both divisions – alfalfa hay, grass hay and mixed hay. The Wyoming Hay and Forage Association (WHFA) awards the Alan M. Gray Best of Show Trophy Plaque, buckles for champions in the open and young producer division, plaques for category grand champions, along with cash prizes, rosettes and ribbons for class winners. Judging will take place Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. with an award presentation to follow at 3 p.m. The public is invited to participate in their own judging of the entries. UW Extension will coordinate a people’s choice judging format from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. People’s choice awards will be held on Aug. 21 at 12 p.m. A yet to be determined number of alfalfa hay entries and grass hay entries will be selected by the superintendent for entry in the World Forage Analysis Superbowl during the World Dairy Expo in October in Madison, Wisc. with the entry fees paid by WHFA. The remaining hay will be raffled off in one lot.

From the emigrant trails to the Pony Express and the telegraph, Glenrock area history is heavily intertwined with key milestones in American history. The DEER CREEK MUSEUM archives include old voting records, early building permits, historic maps of the pioneer trails and personal accounts of past events by area residents.

Glenrock, Wyoming

GLENROCK

The exhibits include artifacts from the Buffalo Jump and Native American artifacts such as arrowheads, knives, scrapers, spears and axes. There are pictorials, shares and stock certificates from the Big Muddy Oil Field and the Lusk Royalty Coal Company. An old fashioned dentist chair, spinning wheels, clothing, jewelry, rifles, swords, hand tools and the old post office chamber sort boxes are just some of the donated and on loan items to be seen!

If you dig dinosaurs, then you’re going to love the Glenrock Paleontological Museum. It’s not the biggest dinosaur museum you’ll ever come across, but it may be the best. The museum is home to an amazing array of dinosaur bones and geological treasures. This small town gem of a museum should be at the top of your list as it will charm visitors of all ages.

South of Douglas off Exit 151

by

Pack a Lunch Be sure to pack a lunch when traveling to Natural Bridge. It’s a wonderful place for a picnic. Children enjoy playing in the shallow water of LaPrele Creek as it flows beneath the bridge.

Open 8am - 8pm April 15 - Oct. 15

BY THE TIME members of the 1870 Geological Survey stopped at the site, scores of westbound emigrants had already visited the unique natural bridge southwest of Douglas. But it wasn’t until 1919 — a century ago — that the son of rancher Alvah Ayres donated the bridge and 150 acres surrounding it to Converse County. Crafted by the hands of Mother Nature, Natural Bridge, located just south of the Oregon Trail, is one of only three natural bridges in the United States with water beneath. Considered one of Wyoming’s first tourist attractions, scenery seekers enjoy this breathtaking wonder that includes a picnic area, hiking paths, a sand volleyball court, fishing areas and horseshoe pits.

Protecting both livestock and producers with a common-sense approach placed Jim on many working groups and regulatory boards. According to nominators, Jim played a key role in the development of current Wyoming Brucellosis Designated Surveillance Area regulations to increase trust in the sale of Wyoming cattle. He also worked to revise language in the Code of Federal Regulations pertaining to brucellosis eradication and control. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinarian Morgan Hennessey says, “Jim has established working relationships with producers in Wyoming to ensure control of brucellosis within a designated surveillance area around the Greater Yellowstone Area, and these relationships have ensured testing and management for brucellosis have occurred using a common-sense approach in the best interest of Wyoming cattle producers.” Jim’s long list of service includes activity and leadership positions within the U.S. Animal Health Association (USAHA), the American Veterinary Medical Association, Wyoming Veterinary Medical Association, the Wyoming Livestock Board, American Sheep Industry Association, USDA APHIS National Animal Health Surveillance System Steering Committee, Wyoming Wool Growers Association and Western States Livestock Health Association. “As a veterinarian in private practice and in administrative leadership capacities, Jim has made livestock management issues and concerns manageable and comprehensible and can always be found providing resolutions to ongoing developments,” notes Mark Eisele. “Jim is well respected and admired by veterinarians and livestock practitioners locally, statewide, around the Intermountain West and nationally. His dedication is unlike any other in veterinary medicine and animal welfare that I have seen.” Livestock promotion and passion for agriculture In addition to serving in many positions to enhance animal health, Jim has shown his dedication to the promotion of livestock, especially sheep, for many years. Nominators share through raising his own livestock, and pursuing similar adventures with his daughters, Jim has supported 4-H and FFA tirelessly. Betsy Milek, Jim’s daughter, shares, “He would diligently and patiently work with us and our 4-H friends to prepare us to fit and show our sheep at the fair. He also served on the Fremont County 4-H Council, and has always been willing to help the 4-H kids in any way possible, from writing out health certificates or doctoring animals to giving animal health lectures or being a narrator for the annual 4-H Fashion Revue.”

Wyoming Livestock Board Director Steve True shares, “Jim has given his career to the livestock industry, not only of Wyoming, but the nation as a whole. He has been an exemplary representative of Wyoming at events, conferences, conventions and in the dirt and mud of corrals.” Eisele adds, “Jim’s experience, knowledge and humble way of explaining issues to agricultural producers, the general public and outside industry is the best that Wyomingites could have ever asked for. Jim is proving he will always have the Wyoming animal and livestock industry health at heart.” Jim says, “I have been privileged and blessed to have been allowed to work with the Wyoming livestock industry all of my veterinary career, for 27 years in veterinary practice and since 1998 working for the Wyoming Livestock Board in regulatory veterinary medicine. I have a great deal of respect, admiration and affection for livestock producers and the animals they raise. I have many friends in the industry and I look forward to continuing to work with them in some capacity, even after retirement.” Dr. Jim Logan, alongside Keith and Linda Hamilton, will be inducted into the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame at the ceremony and picnic set for Aug. 18, 5 p.m. at Riverside Park in Douglas.

Linda served as a WACD councilman from 2009-13 and again from 2015-18. In addition, Linda represented the sheep industry on the Department of Environmental Quality Non-Point Task Force since 2005. Nominators add, “Linda is dedicated to the promotion of local agriculture and the ranching way of life. She continues to demonstrate resilience and dedication, and will continue to do so for years to come.” Leaders in agriculture In addition to their involvement in civic activities, Keith and Linda Hamilton’s love and passion for agriculture show both in their dedication to organizations, as well as in the improvement of operations on their ranch.

The Hamiltons were one of four operations to initially enroll in the Wyoming Stewardship Program in 1982, later known as Coordinated Resource Management (CRM). This program opened the door for the Hamiltons to work closely with agencies such as Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Wyoming Department of Agriculture on improving ranch operations. The Hamilton Ranch continues their involvement with these agencies to this day using the CRM format. Additionally, the Hamilton Ranch was recognized as the 1998 Environmental Stewardship Award Winner, as well as a Wyoming Centennial Ranch in 2015 – both of which reflect the nature of Keith and Linda as leaders in agriculture. Keith, Linda and the Hamilton Ranch are longtime members of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association and Wyoming Stock Growers Association. They are also past members of the Mountain States Lamb Co-op. Keith shares, “It is a tremendous honor to be associated with the folks who have received this before us. We are tremendously thrilled.” Keith and Linda will be recognized, alongside Dr. Jim Logan, at the Wyoming Ag Hall of Fame Picnic at 5 p.m. Aug. 18 at Riverside Park in Douglas.

The Champion of Champions Challenge is an educational competition designed to provide an analysis of improved swine selection

and pork quality for the consumer by highlighting the champion market hog from each county in Wyoming and its exhibitor. 4-H Swine Showmanship will immediately follow where 4-H members will compete to show they make the best team player with their show pig. Swine shows will continue on Aug. 19, starting with FFA Swine Showmanship at 1 p.m., followed by the Youth Market Swine Show and rounding out the day with the Youth Market Swine Best Pen of Five. Hogs will be judged on overall appearance, uniformity and market pork quality and the showmanship, appearance and attitude of exhibitors will also be considered. The Youth Breeding Swine Show will begin Aug. 20 at 1 p.m., where youth display Duroc, Yorkshire, Hampshire, crossbred, any other colored breed and any other white breed gilts, as well as junior and senior boars. The Wyoming Vocational Agriculture Teacher (WVATA) Market Swine Jackpot Show, which follows the Breeding Swine Show, will round out the week of hog shows at the fair.
