Opening Weekend For the 29th consecutive year, crashing and smashing will once again appear at the Wyoming State Fair (WSF) with the fan-favorite demolition derby kicking off on Aug 11. A fixture at the WSF, the demo derby is put on every year by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department. In nearly its third decade in Douglas, the event is more popular now than ever. “By far, the biggest crowd draw is the demolition derby,” said Wyoming State Fair Director James Goodrich. The rules are simple — crash. Drivers must remove all glass and chrome, and only the gas tank and battery can be moved inside the car. Demo cars are not allowed to have reinforcements, and the only additives that can be used are extra fuel and water and ice for the radiator. After the flag drops, drivers have two minutes to make a substantial hit. By substantial, they mean no love-taps. Arena judges watch for infractions, while

Opening Weekend Ranch rodeo steps back in time

With the third year of the Wyoming State Finals of the ranch rodeo, Donna Vold-Larsen says that Triple V Rodeo Company is celebrating 100 years of state fair by wearing period clothing. “We’re going back in time with our period clothing this year,” comments Vold-Larsen. “We’re wearing split riding skirts, and our pickup men will be wearing period chaps.” Triple V Rodeo Company, the stock contractor for the event, notes that the competition hosts top-notch cowboys. “The cowboys vying to win have to win a ranch rodeo in Wyoming to qualify, and our winners go to the NILE (Northern International Livestock Exhibition) Ranch Rodeo finals in October to compete,” explains VoldLarsen. “It’s keen competition – these are terrific ranch cowboys.”

This year marks Larsen says the 100th fair. she anticipates this year to draw even larger crowds. Larry Bentley, Ranch Rodeo Finals coordinator, says, “Last year was bigger than ever before. We sold out the tickets, and there were around 900 people there.” Bentley adds that this year there will likely be 12 teams competing. For the future, Bentley also notes that the Wyoming State Fair is working to become sanctioned so the winners from the event can go on to compete at the National Ranch Rodeo Championship in Amarillo. “We hope that our state fair will be qualified in the next couple of years,” he says. Also unique to this year, a concert featuring Western Underground will follow the rodeo. – WYLR

Wyoming Mercantile continues success After moving to the midway for the first time last year, Wyoming Mercantile, an outlet for Wyoming businesspeople to sell their wares, is back for another year. “Last year, we had record sales down at the Mercantile,” comments Kim Porter, the Wyoming Business Council farmers market and education project coordinator. “We also had a ton of great comments.” With the additional exposure on the midway, Porter notes that a number of fair goers mentioned they were unaware the venue existed before. “I was surprised about how many people didn’t know we were promoting Wyoming products on the fairgrounds,” adds Porter. “We increased the awareness of Wyoming-made products.” This year, Wyoming Mercantile is continuing to expand. “We had such a huge success last year that we have seen an increase in business participation,” she says. “We have more than 70 vendors this year, compared to the 55 from last year.” The yard area in front of the building will also be utilized more this year with several displays and a book tent. “Whistlestop Bookstore will have a book tent and will have activities such as author reading and book signings,” Porter explains. “We have also partnered with the Wyoming State Fair to sell state

TUESDAY Metal arts emerge as new division

With the increasing number of artists that have moved into the metal arts field, the Wyoming State Fair added a new division to their creative and home arts category – metal arts. Cathy Dugger, the co-superintendent of the show says, “I’ve been co-superintendent for several years now, and there has been a group of people that have really moved into doing the metal arts. They are taking welding classes and making beautiful pieces, so we thought that metal arts would be nice for our display.” Pieces range from small home items to very large pieces of yard art, according to Dugger, who adds, “It’s incredible to me because these artists are using things that aren’t normally considered art.” The metal arts exhibits will be displayed from Aug. 14 – 18 of state fair in the Upper Ag Hall, along with the quilt show. “Come and take a look,” encourages Dug-

ger. “A lot of people forget that we are up here, and there are some amazing artists in the state. I In 1968, the Arts and Crafts am thrilled at building on the Wyoming what our artState Fair grounds burned. ists bring in It was replaced with a metal every year.” building. – WYLR

TUESDAY Wyoming hay competes for world spot Forage samples from Wyoming producers are already being sent to Kearney, Neb. to have their relative feed value (RFV) tested in collaboration with the Hay Show at the Wyoming State Fair. The results are sent back to Donn Randall, Wyoming Business Council Crop and Forage Program manager. It is at the Wyoming State Fair that the winner of the Hay Show will be announced. Between 60 and 70 entries are expected to be exhibited in this year’s fair, which marks the 100th year of the event.

This year, I have producers calling me because they need hay,” says Randall. “There is a dedicated group of people who will bring samples regardless of the conditions, though.” The five alfalfa samples with the highest RFV will be sent from the Wyoming State Fair Hay Show to the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. “We pay the entry fees for the producers to be entered in the World Dairy Expo. A grass hay division has been recently added to the competition, so we will be sending 10 entries to compete in the Forage Challenge. Taking Wyoming hay to the World Dairy Expo gives people a chance to see what good hay looks like,” says Randall. – WYLR

Joel Bousman advocates for multiple use and agriculture Since he started his journey in agriculture, Joel Bousman has been an integral part of the Wyoming agriculture industry and, as a result, has been selected to join the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame. Each year, readers of the Wyoming Livestock Roundup nominate members of the agriculture industry that have gone above and beyond serving the ag industry. Three judges review the nominations and rank individuals based on their contributions to agriculture. At the end of the day, the highest scores receive the honor of being inducted into the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame. “Joel is a recognized community leader in Sublette County in addressing issues related to extensive mineral development and wildlife habitat,” states the nomination letter describing why Bousman deserves this award. Agriculture operations “Joel’s success begins with his management of his own ranch,” says the nomination letter. Bousman operates Eastfork Livestock in Boulder and is actively involved in the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, having served as a regional vice president of the organization, as well as president of the Green River Valley Cattlemen’s Association and as a member of the Wyoming State Grazing Board. “He is looked to for leadership by his peers in the ranch industry, a position of esteem earned by his thoughtful wisdom, determination and willingness to speak out as an industry advocate and defender,” says Sublette County Conservation District Manager Eric Peterson. Peterson adds that Bousman has been a progressive leader in the ranching community and has worked toward conservation efforts on his ranch, as well as on public lands allotments. Conservation efforts Bousman’s dedication toward conservation efforts on his operation and on public land allotments earned the operation the title of 2003 Wyoming Stock Growers Environmental Stewardship Award winner. “Joel’s recognition as the Conservation Stewardship Award winner was in part due to his determination to make rangeland monitoring a joint effort of agencies and permittees,” Peterson notes, also mentioning Bousman’s involvement in the Joint Cooperative Rangeland Monitoring System’s formulation. In achieving the award, Bousman has utilized monitoring to improve habitat and increase grazing over time. He worked with BLM range conser-

vationists and permittees to develop voluntary partnerships for range monitoring, including working with UW Extension to produce a video demonstrating monitoring techniques. “He was a pioneer in initiating grazing monitoring that is conducted jointly by the federal land agencies and the grazing permittees,” the nomination letter notes. “He led the effort by Wyoming and the National Public Lands Council to establish voluntary, cooperative permittee monitoring on public land grazing allotments throughout the western United States,” recognizes Wyoming Governor Matt Mead. Bousman also received the 2011 Guardian of the Grasslands award. Advocating for multiple use “Joel has spent his entire life dedicated to furthering the interests of maintaining multiple use practices on public lands, not only as a fourth generation rancher, but also as an elected official,” Executive Director of the Wyoming County Commissioners Association Cindy Delancy says. “He is very passionate about this topic and wants to ensure that our custom and culture remains for future generations.” Bousman works with Delancy in his capacity as Wyoming County Commissioners Association (WCCA) president, a role he took in January 2011. “Joel is actively engaged in a variety of stakeholder groups – locally, statewide and nationally,” Delancy continues. “He’s done an excellent job representing Wyoming everywhere he goes.” She additionally mentions that Bousman sends a consistent message, regardless of whether he is speaking with constituents or testifying before a congressional subcommittee. “He is a proven leader who is well respected in all circles – from the halls of Congress to the Wyoming Capitol and from the Sublette County Building to a constituent’s kitchen table,” comments Mead. “Commissioner Bousman advocates tirelessly for multiple-use principles.” Mead adds, “Commissioner Bousman’s public service has made a positive impact on public lands at a national, state and local level.” “They broke the mold with Joel Bousman,” Delancy comments. “He is one-of-a-kind and a great human being and a great person.” Converse County rancher Gene Hardy joins Bousman in the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame this year. Bousman and Hardy will be recognized at the Wyoming Livestock Roundup annual Agriculture Hall of Fame Picnic on Aug. 15. The picnic is held at Riverside Park in Douglas beginning at 5:30 p.m. – WYLR

Hardy recognized for sheep industry accomplishments Gene Hardy is no stranger to the agriculture industry. The rancher runs sheep and cattle in northern Converse County, continuing the traditions of his family. “When my dad first came to this country in about 1915, he wasn’t old enough to take a homestead,” comments Hardy, who notes that the current ranch headquarters were established after his parents were married in 1927. “My dad and his brother homesteaded this area in the spring of 1920. That got them established and going, and that’s the way my family wound up in this area.” Strong roots The operation has run both cattle and sheep since the mid-1930s off and on, Hardy explains. During World War II, when help was tight, Hardy explains that the family sold their sheep, continuing to run sheep again in 1965. “My wife Joy and I later went back into sheep in 1965, and we’ve run both ever since,” he comments. The third generation rancher runs a large herd of Rambouillet ewes, and they don’t use herders or dogs. “I believe this county is best suited to a good, sturdy, white-faced breed of sheep, and in our case, we have gone strictly Rambouillet,” Hardy explains. Utilizing both cattle and sheep can be done with intensive management, but Hardy notes that overgrazing can happen easily, saying, “You have to have good management.” In managing the sheep operation, predator control is very important, and with the loss of some important tools, it is becoming increasingly difficult. “Some situations have created public opinion that’s not conducive to predator management, and we have to cope with that the best we can,” Hardy explains. Maintaining quality Hardy continually works to develop his herd and the genetics of the Wyoming sheep industry. “From the sheep industry perspective, Gene has been as innovative, if not more innovative, than a lot of sheep producers,” comments Wyoming Wool Growers Association Executive Vice President Bryce Reece, noting that Hardy is forward thinking and willing to try new things to continually improve production. Reece adds, “Gene has not scrimped in terms of obtaining superior genetics, and he has supported the industry. Gene has always bought the best, and it shows in the quality of his livestock.” 38

“He has been in the front of everything for a long time,” he says. Industry impacts Hardy’s involvement in Wyoming’s agriculture industry extends beyond his own operation, and he has taken an active role in a number of state organizations. “As long as I have know Gene, he has been active, involved and has contributed to the industry,” comments Converse County rancher Frank Moore. “Gene is definitely deserving of this award.” “He’s been on the Wyoming Livestock Board, the Board of Agriculture, and he’s served on the boards for the Wyoming Wool Growers Association and the Wyoming Stock Growers Association,” comments Reece. “If someone needs him, Gene has never not answered the call.” Currently, Hardy is the president of the State Predatory Animal Board, Wyoming Association of County Predatory Animal Boards and the past president of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association. In addition, he holds the position of secretary on the Converse County Predator Board. He serves on the Animal Damage Management Board and was also appointed chairman of the American Sheep Industry Association’s Predator Management Committee recently. “Gene has given freely and with great enthusiasm both his time and his money to those organizations he believes in,” notes Reece. “He has never refused to offer support or serve, and has long been held in great esteem by not only the Wyoming Wool Growers Association, but also many other ag groups in Wyoming.” “We need a lot more Gene Hardys in this world,” Reece says. Sublette County Commissioner Joel Bousman joins Hardy in the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame this year. Bousman and Hardy will be recognized at the Wyoming Livestock Roundup annual Agriculture Hall of Fame Picnic on Aug. 15, where they will be presented with a belt buckle and commemorative poster. The picnic is held at Riverside Park in Douglas beginning at 5:30 p.m. – WYLR

Kerry Powers Rupiblican Candidate for House District 4

I would like to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy for the open seat to the Wyoming House of Representatives, HD-4, in the upcoming 2012 Election. My wife Clara and I live on the family ranch west of Wheatland, and I have a bachelor’s degree in Forestry from Colorado State University. After college we lived and worked on the family ranch near Wheatland until 1977 when I embarked on a career for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), moving to Lusk, Powell, Lingle, Torrington and back to Lusk in 1985. In 1994 I retired from the SCS as District Conservationist and went into the Real Estate Business, owning and operating Cedardale Properties. In 2005 we moved back to the family ranch where I am a member of the Wheatland Chamber of Commerce and the Laramie Peak Stock Growers. A couple of State Boards and Commissions I have served on over the years include the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission from 2001 thru 2006, and the Animal Damage Management Board. I have received awards for dedication and commitment to the Enhancement of Wildlife Habitat and Education, as well as to the Natural Resources of the State of Wyoming. My wife Clara and I have hosted many tours and field days on our ranch including Wyoming Ag in the Classroom, the Wyoming Business Council, local Conservation Tours and grade school classes. As a strong Conservative, I am very involved with the Platte County Republican Central Committee, serving as a Precinct Committeeman, State Committeeman, and will be a National Delegate in August during the Republican Convention in Tampa Bay, Fla. In the coming days and weeks leading up to the election, I would be glad to visit with any of you as individuals, groups, and/or organizations about my Conservative view points concerning any number of issues facing us today. I would very much appreciate your support and vote in the upcoming election.

Thursday Wyoming Pioneer Association carries tradition for 100th Wyoming State Fair

~Looking Back~

More historical information detailing the events that have occurred at the Wyoming State Fair can be found in the Pioneer Museum, located at the top of the Midway.

For nearly 130 years, the Wyoming Pioneer Association has held yearly meetings for people doing business in the Wyoming area. From the first meeting in 1884 when Wyoming was still a territory to when the association began holding its meetings in Douglas at the Wyoming State Fair in 1905, the Wyoming Pioneer Association hasn’t missed a beat. The pioneers were a pivotal force behind obtaining statehood, and the association was incorporated in 1926. Now, 86 years later, it serves as an advisory board to the Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum and has members both statewide and nationally. This year’s events will take place on Aug. 16 with entertainment throughout the day. For more information about the Wyoming Pioneer Association or this year’s meeting, contact Mary Engebretsen at 307-334-2929. – DB

Thursday Alpacas introduced to the Wyoming State Fair

With alpacas growing in interest around Wyoming, Vicki Horn, alpaca owner of Glenrock and superintendent of the Wyoming State Fair (WSF) alpaca show, says she anticipates that the new show at the WSF will be a great addition to the fair. “We are trying to promote activities for the kids and the alpacas at fair,” comments Horn. “This is the first show, and we think it will catch on in the future.” Contestants in the alpaca show compete in classes including showmanship, an obstacle course and a public relations class. “We will have a showmanship ring, and the point of the class is to see how much trust the animals have in the handlers,” explains Horn. “We also ask questions about anatomy and alpaca knowledge.” The obstacle course tests the alpaca’s familiarity with a series of obstacles, including jumps, a bridge and tunnels. Alpacas walk through water, weave through cones and change pace, as well. “Some obstacles are difficult, while others are easier,” she notes. The last contest, public relations, tests the alpaca’s ability to remain calm in unfamiliar situations. “The main thing about the show is that the kids Thursday, Aug. 16, 9 a.m. enjoy it and have a lot of fun,” Horn adds. “I hope it Horse Arenas will be a good event. – WYLR

FRIDAY

Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2012

On Aug. 20, 2011, the coveted jade and gold crown was placed on Kimberly Kuhn’s cowboy hat as she began her journey as Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2012. Being given the opportunity to promote her two great loves – rodeo and Wyoming – is a life-long accomplishment for Kuhn. Proud to be raised a Wyoming cowgirl, Kuhn is the 22-year-old daughter of Pete and Vicki Kuhn and a fifth generation ranch owner in Johnson and Sheridan Counties, which made it possible for her to become the 2011 Sheridan WYO Rodeo Queen. While at the State Fair, Kuhn Ranch was included as a 2011 Centennial Farm and Ranch honoree. Kimberly graduated from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor of science in agriculture business with a minor in finance. While at UW, she was a member of UW Rodeo Team, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, SPURS Honorary and Ag Ambassadors and is a recipient of the National Western Stock Show Scholarship. Kuhn is a member of the Wyoming Rodeo Association and the Big Horn

Basque Club. She was honored to serve Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) as Miss Frontier 2009 and as a leader of the CFD Dandies, whom she traveled with for four years as a Goodwill Ambassador. Kuhn has earned her Gold Congressional award and served as an FFA officer, also receiving the Star in Agriculture Placement Award. As Kuhn travels the trail of Miss Rodeo Wyoming, she will take along her passion for “Be Your Best Self.” The platform she selected a number of years ago aims to create a positive attitude and build self-confidence in everyone she meets so they too can chase their dreams. Kuhn would especially like to thank her family, friends and sponsors for their support to make this year possible. Kuhn is looking forward to an extraordinary year of building up everyone she encounters while she promotes professional rodeo and the state of Wyoming with class, integrity, beauty and grace. – Courtesy Miss Rodeo Wyoming Pageant

Five Wyoming women vie for 2013 Miss Rodeo Wyoming title The annual Miss Rodeo Wyoming pageant will be held in Douglas on Aug. 13-17. The pageant is held in conjunction with the Wyoming State Fair, which is celebrating 100 years. Young ladies will be challenged in the areas of horsemanship, appearance and personality. The highlight of the pageant is the speech and modeling luncheon, held at the Clarion on Aug. 16. For ticket information, please visit missrodeowyoming.com. Kimberly Kuhn, Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2012, from Sheridan will be passing down her crown at the conclusion of the pageant. However, this pageant is not the end of her reign. Kuhn will travel to Las Vegas in December during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to vie for the coveted title of “Miss Rodeo America.” The Miss Rodeo Wyoming pageant is celebrating 57 years of western tradition with five young women from across Wyoming competing for the coveted jade crown. Crowning of the 2013 Miss Rodeo Wyoming will be held during the Aug. 17 PRCA rodeo evening performance.

Amber Ezell Miss Outriders 2012

“Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” Miss Outriders 2012 Amber Ezell believes in teaching young women to always reach for their dreams and with the right attitude, anything can be accomplished. Amber is a 2007 graduate of Encampment High School and is the 23-year-old daughter of Anne-Terri Ezell and Steve Hays. She recently graduated Central Wyoming College (CWC) with degrees in secondary education, social sciences and English with high honors. She plans to begin working on a bachelor degree in English with a minor in philosophy and hopes to attend law school. She was captain of the Debate and Forensics Team while attending CWC and earned a second-place finish at the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Tournament. Amber was also the recipient of the Student Senate Leadership Award. Amber enjoys designing and sewing her own clothing, competing in Dutch oven cookoffs and spending quality time with her horses. Amber was very active in Job’s Daughters and is a Past Honored Queen of Bethel # 3 in Rawlins. She also says she feels blessed to have been voted Wyoming Job’s Daughters Miss Congeniality. Amber is a sixth generation Wyoming native and enjoys learning about our state’s rich history. 54

Bridget Seidel Miss Cody Stampede 2012 Bridget Seidel is the 21-year-old daughter of Keith and Lisa Seidel. Bridget recently graduated from Casper College with an associate of science degree in marketing. She plans to continue her education and earn a bachelor degree in web design and obtain a career using her talents to create high-tech websites for prestigious companies. Bridget is currently working for Seidel’s Saddlery, her family’s renowned western store in Cody, where her advanced skills in sales, marketing, web design and even speaking French are invaluable. She has recently redesigned and launched a new website for the company and oversees all of the network responsibilities. She also works as a sales and marketing manager helping order and purchase merchandise. Additionally, she helps out in the saddle shop cleaning and restoring high quality saddles and braiding edges on belts and other leather goods. Bridget grew up on a ranch and has never known life without horses. This makes it easy for her to enjoy barrel racing, ranch roping and other arena sports, but she especially enjoys riding with her family in the mountains around Yellowstone National Park. Bridget usually rides her black horse, Wyoming, that she trained herself. When she’s not in the saddle, Bridget is often found shooting at the pistol range, playing cowboy songs on her fiddle or kicking up her heels on the dance floor. Even though Bridget has a very active lifestyle, she always makes an effort to spend quality time with family and friends.

Holly Kennedy Miss Albany County Farm Bureau 2012

Growing up on Wyoming’s windswept plains, Holly Kennedy learned at a young age that with hard work, dedication and active engagement she could achieve anything she dreamed. Whether it was

in the one-room schoolhouse she attended in her youth or at the University of Wyoming, Holly has been an active participant in promoting agriculture. Celebrating the past, present and future of agriculture, Holly is active in organizations such as 4-H, FFA, Collegiate Horseman’s, Collegiate Cattle Women’s and the Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmers and Ranchers. As varied as the terrain of the isolated ranch where she was raised, Holly’s interests include hunting, fishing, snowboarding, photography, sewing, ranch work, horse judging, showing sheep and riding mules and horses. She is an old hand of the rodeo arena, participating in pole bending, barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping and ranch rodeos. Holly credits her parents, Kelly and Alexa Kennedy, for instilling in her the confidence to always stand up for what she believes in, stand out to make herself and her issues known, and speak up about her beliefs. Holly encourages everyone to “Stand Up, Stand Out and Speak Up” about what is important to you.

Christina Albertini Sweetwater County Rodeo Queen 2012 Driving in the middle of the night in a winter blizzard over Wyoming Highway 28 was the starting point of Christina’s life. Christina lived a few years on a sheep farm in Farson where her family raised Rambouillets. The first horse that Christina stepped up on was a sheep-camp horse named Carolina. Carolina taught Christina how to run barrels and poles, and Christina used Carolina for goat tying. Since then Christina has been passionate about horses and rodeo. Christina moved to Rock Springs when she was about five. She graduated from Rock Springs High School in 2009. She participated in many activities during her high school years, including the National Honors Society, Athletes for Literacy, band and swimming. She also participated in the Ride ‘Em High 4-H Horse Club where she learned about horsemanship, hard work, responsibility and dedication. Christina graduated from Central Wyoming College and Western Wyoming Community College. She now attends South Dakota School of Mines and Technology studying electrical engineering. “Having somewhere to go is home, having

someone to love is family, having both is a blessing,” is a quote by an unknown author, however, the quote is definitely not unknown to Christina. She believes that every place she goes is home, every person she meets is family and that she is blessed to have places to go and people to meet. If Christina becomes Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2013 she knows she will have the enthusiasm, knowledge and good work ethic to promote professional rodeo.

Kodie Lester Miss Laramie Jubilee Days 2012 Kodie Lester, a born and raised resident of Laramie, is honored to be representing the Laramie Jubilee Days Rodeo. She is proud to have been raised in the Rocky Mountains as a Wyoming cowgirl. She became actively involved in 4-H, FFA and high school rodeo starting at a young age. Kodie spent 11 years in 4-H showing horses, dogs, sheep, pigs and cats. She has served as her club president, as well as many other official positions. She now holds a leader position in the Albany County 4-H dog project. In FFA, she showed pigs, horses and sheep and was a recipient of the Wyoming State FFA Degree and the small animal production and care proficiency award. She is still involved in the family business of raising and breeding labrador retrievers by training and showing the dogs. As a member of high school rodeo, she competed in barrel racing and pole bending. Kodie has also received the Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award, which honors outstanding young women for volunteer work within their community. Kodie is currently attending the University of Wyoming pursuing a degree in rangeland ecology and watershed management. Because of her love of animals, she has pursued employment with the Wyoming State Vet Lab. Kodie’s platform is “Become Something Bigger than Yourself.” She says, “Having the opportunity to be an accomplished horsewoman and making a difference in promoting stewardship over animals, teaching fair play, honesty and responsibility is the key way of becoming something bigger than yourself. – Courtesy Miss Rodeo Wyoming Pageant

FRIDAY Ranch horse competition continues The ranch horse competition continues at the Wyoming State Fair this year, and Contest Superintendent Tim Ettlemen says the event will be held on Friday again this year. “Last year was smaller than past years, as far as the number of entries,” comments Ettlemen, speculating that the change from Sunday to Friday may have affected some competitors. “We’re hoping this year to have some more competitors.” Last year was the first year that the event was held on Friday, and Ettlemen says, “We have more time for the event on F r i d a y , A racetrack, billed as the and rather best in the state, was conthan havstructed in the early years ing it in the of the Wyoming State Fair. grandstand The venue cost $5,000. arena, we

The winner of each division will be awarded a belt buckle. The Wyoming State Fair (WSF) will be installing a monument to commemorate the 100th year of the event. The monument, which is set to be a petrified tree, will be located near the information booth and will be in place sometime in the next year. “The idea is to find a petrified tree that will come from the coal mines,” explains WSF Director James Goodrich. “It is something that is very much a symbol of the solid energy business in Wyoming and the long-term heritage.” The unique monument will also feature a base with plaques recognizing those people who have World War II resulted in the contributed Wyoming State Fair being toward the cancelled for four years – fundraisfrom 1942-45. WSF parade lures with large prizes

Saturday WSF strive to involve all

During the early years of the Wyoming State Fair (WSF), county displays proved to be a highlight for fair goers. These displays brought representatives of each county from across the state to highlight the county’s strongest aspects. “One of the early goals of the planning committee was to incorporate county displays at state fair,” comments WSF Director James Goodrich, who was among a committee that visited each county fair board in the state to achieve that goal. The WSF also welcomes involvement from other county organizations, including Chambers of Commerce, County Tourism Boards and local organizations. “We are encouraging a group effort from each county,” Goodrich adds. “While we want the focus to be on agriculture, it doesn’t have to be. The display can focus on tourism, industry, mining or whatever the county chooses to showcase.” Displays will be located in a large tent on the grounds, and Goodrich says they have seen a lot of interest from around the state. “I think we will have a very good turnout and great displays,” he adds. “Looking forward, I hope we can set a pattern, and this becomes an event that we can have every year. Hopefully, the counties that attend will see some benefit.” – WYLR

Encana sponsors youth entrants With the 100th celebration of the Wyoming State Fair, Encana Oil and Gas has contributed to improving the state fair experience for youth exhibitors. “In celebration of the 100 th Wyoming State Fair, we are sponsoring all the 4-H and FFA kids who are showing livestock at the fair,” says Randy Teeuwen, community relations advisor for Encana Oil and Gas. “We also paid for new boilers and a renovation of the hot water system so that kids can enjoy a hot shower at state fair.” Teeuwen notes that the boiler systems utilize natural gas to heat water, and he says, “It makes sense that we can renovate that system, and combined with providing those kids a place to stay, it seems like a good contribution.” Each year, the Wyoming State Fair hosts 500 youth from around the state in the dormitory facilities – WYLR

SUNDAY Appaloosas continue state fair show

The Appaloosa show hasn’t always taken place at the Wyoming State Fair (WSF), and in fact, this year marks only the second consecutive year of the event in Douglas in the last 20 years. “We had our show at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne for several years,” explains Tom Burris, president of the Big Wyoming Appaloosa Horse Club. “When they were remodeling the college, we moved to Torrington and were there until 2011.” By holding the show in Douglas at the WSF, Burris says members receive bonus points toward their national points totals. “It is also a more convenient location, and we get people from Colorado, Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota, as well as Wyoming,” he added. The show features 192 classes, including eight new In 1916, a train from the classes in the Colorado and Southern beginner nonRailway took travelers pro division from Cheyenne to Dougto encourage las, at a cost of $6.80 for more competthe round trip. itors. include equitation, halter and cattle classes. “We have classes for just about anything you can do on a horse in open, youth and non-pro divisions,” Burris says, noting that a particularly interesting class is steer dogging. “It’s a really fun show,” Burris adds. “There is a lot to do.” – WYLR

Planning committee works more th than two years for 100 WSF Beginning in October 2010, members of the Wyoming State Fair planning committee began formulating the ideas for the 100th year of the event. “Our goal was to produce a memorable event that included all of the counties from around the state,” says James Goodrich, Wyoming State Fair director. “We were also looking to set a pattern for future fairs.”

74

The 100th Wyoming State Fair Planning Committee was organized into two sub-committees: activities and fundraising. While the fundraising committee set to work accumulating the funds to prepare an outstanding fair, the activities committee began preparing a list of events. Del Tinsley, chair of the fundraising committee, notes, “The activities committee put together a good state fair. We have a ton of activities that we’ve never had before.” Activities Committee Chairman Jim Anderson and the committee worked to secure a long list of events, including four concerts, new livestock events and additional awards. Members of the planning committee include Jim Anderson, Del Tinsley, Kenny Taylor, Arlene Ecklund-Ernst, Chris Crozier, Derek Grant, Dave Edwards, Jason Fearneyhough, James Goodrich, Darlene Hageman, Tyler Haskins, Joe Rankin, Vicki Rupert, Sarah Stoltenburg, Doug Fenton, Smokey Deines, Mary Engebretson and Milward Simpson. “It’s going to be a record-breaking year in a lot of ways,” adds Goodrich. “This isn’t only the end of the first 100 years, it is also the beginning of the second 100 years of the Wyoming State Fair.” – WYLR

WSF improves grounds for 100th

After more than a year of preparation, there are just a few short weeks remaining before the start of the 100th Wyoming State Fair (WSF). Fair representatives have met their goal for obtaining the state match on funding of $250,000, and have been hard at work putting that money to good use. Improvements to the grounds include new paving to all of the existing paved roadways, fresh coats of paint on Fort Reno, Fort Caspar and the Fort Laramie and Fort Washakie dormitory buildings to create a more consistent color scheme across the grounds, a variety of new trees near the campground and a complete renovation of Fort Steele.

“We’re doing a massive upgrade to the little Fort Steele Building,” Fair Director James Goodrich says. “It’s getting restrooms, heating and air conditioning and windows and doors, so it’s going to be a fully-functional event building now, where it had been semi-storage, semi-vacant.” Three old horse barns have also been demolished and two were remodeled to make more room for parking near the south end of the grounds. Also under construction are the concession stands at the Grandstand. As the big event gets closer, the WSF is ready for increased crowds, more entertainments and an all-around big event honoring the theme, “Times Change, Traditions Remain.” – DB

Living Legacy program continues

With support from local conservation districts, county commissioners, Wyoming ranch families and supporters of the Wyoming State Fair, on June 4 the Wyoming Board of Agriculture and the Wyoming Natural Resource Foundation hosted a volunteer workday on the Wyoming State Fairgrounds to plant 52 large trees and install tree guards on 25 trees. “The Living Legacy program was initiated by the Board of Agriculture in 2006. As a result of this program and the new donations for this year, more than 160 trees have been planted on the state fairgrounds,” said Board of Agriculture Vice President Patrick Zimmerer, adding, “We are really excited to add a new component this year and have tree guards installed around a number of the trees. Closer to the river, a project that has been underway for some time now is nearing completion. Phase three of four of the Pathway to Water Quality project should be nearly finished by the first day of fair. This year, plantings will be added to the walkway. which will eventually feature an interpretive area and picnic area.” – WYLR

The original 80-acre site of the Wyoming Territorial Fair was located somewhere along the old Cheyenne and Northern Railroad right-ofway, but the exact location of the event is unknown.
