Dear Parents
CONGRATULATIONS, MS NONYONGO!
The ALS ice bucket challenge has swept through many communities throughout the world. As you may know Mrs Cawcutt (WGJS), Mr Hart (WBJS) and I were challenged by Mr Richardson of WBHS. These three challenges were accepted and have been carried out, with us nominating various principals in the single gender schools in Cape Town and challenging them in turn. Luckily, we enjoyed some good hot weather for our bucket of ice water and, in some ways, it was quite refreshing!
Ms Vuyo Nonyongo, part of the WGHS support staff, was hugely excited and relieved when she received her final Matric results recently. Ms Nonyongo has been studying part time and is delighted that she has passed all 7 subjects and is now the proud holder of a Matric Senior Certificate.
However, when one participates in this type of “mass” trend, I feel that it is so often done without a meaningful thought for the reason behind the action, or the cause which is being supported. I am, therefore, asking you to stop for a minute and genuinely remember those who are suffering from this debilitating and life-robbing disease. There are famous and well-known people like Steven Hawking and Joost van der Westhuizen who get some encouragement from being a public figure. However, spare a thought for those who suffer from this disease alone, some without even family support. There are people in your community who are suffering, and many who have friends or family in the grip of this difficult disease.
On 20 August the annual Matric Music Concert produced a rich and varied programme. Each student performed two pieces and these included a variety of genres and instruments. The evening was a wonderful tribute to the musical journey travelled by the girls and their teachers over the last five years and was an excellent preparation for their final examination.
Warm regards Shirley Harding Principal

Let us also not forget to be grateful for the life we have and to live it with purpose, working towards goals and realising our potential, while we are able. It has been a privilege to join the ice bucket challenge, not only for the experience, but also to remind myself to care for those with whom I come into contact.
Dominique Jacobs
Also, let us not stop here. Many of our Wynberg families are walking a journey of pain and heartache with family members and friends who suffer from many of the other medical conditions which take the joy out of being alive. If we are able, let's support those we know financially, or in prayer, or by being the human kindness they so desperately need.

INTERACT INDUCTION On Wednesday 13 August, the Interact clubs from all the high schools in the Wynberg Rotaract District gathered to induct the new committees for the upcoming year. These schools were Bergvliet, Heathfield, Norman Henshilwood, Springfield, Wynberg Boys' and of course, Wynberg Girls' High School! Each committee shared the projects that they had worked on during the year, and it was clear how much fun and personal growth Interact had brought into their lives. A guest Rotarian spoke about expanding our projects, making them sustainable, and attempting to reach out to combat bigger issues. He said the skills and experiences gained would be hugely beneficial throughout our lives. We also said goodbye to past-president, Lisa Abrahams, and the rest of the matrics, all of whom have served the committee so well. It was also a good opportunity to thank Mrs Roux for her constant help and encouragement. The new Interact committee for 2014/15: Kayla Arnold - President, Nabeelah Valley - Vice-President, and members - Saleehah Domingo, Melissa Guthrie, Sarah Hardie, Kayla Garcia, Yusrah Soeker, Huda Ely and Lara Harris.

MATRICS’ 40 DAYS!
Only 40 days left before the Matrics start their final exams! Traditionally this is celebrated with dressing up and dancing in the Wellington Quad while the rest of the school looks on and wonders what it must be like to have only 40 school days left!
Interact clubs connected to Wynberg Rotaract spent an afternoon of service at WGHS. Interactors from WBHS, Pinelands, Springfield, Norman Henshilwood and Heathfield High Schools worked on four different projects.
INTERACT
One group made sherbet while the other planted, decorated and named pot plants for the children at Tenterden to teach them the importance of environmental sustainability. The other two groups worked on items for the Victoria Hospital Children’s Ward.
CONSTANTIA HOUSE CHALLENGE This was a matrics-only challenge: to make as many sandwiches as possible in 20 minutes. Quality control was judged by Ms Witthuhn and Ms Edwards. It was also important that there was no wastage. Sandwiches were placed back into the plastic packets and built into a tower or wall of sandwiches. The competition reached fever pitch as Silverlea drew ahead of Constantia . . . but then their tower collapsed so Constantia were now the victors . . . but then Constantia's tower fell apart which meant Silverlea were victorious! What a nailbiter! The winning house received all of the sandwiches (874 in total!) from all the other houses and these were added towards the termly service challenge. All of the sandwiches went to Capricorn Primary School.
SUN RUN
On 15 August a number of schools supported the Sun Run which took place at Rondebosch Boys' High. Learners paid an entrance fee to participate and all the proceeds were donated to charities such as The Sunflower Fund.
MOUNTAIN CLUB
SPCA HAY DONATION After the end of the show, Animal Farm, the bales of hay used during the play were donated to the horse division of the SPCA. Mr Clint Leak, WGHS, hands over the hay to an SPCA representative.
The Mountain Club hiked the challenging but very beautiful India Venster route on Table Mountain recently. Enjoying the view are Mr P Schutte, Mikayla Gray, Tyra-Leigh Findlay, Chloe Coetzee, Antonia Ruter, Nicole Alexander & Mr P Bodenstein.
In order to raise funds for sheet music, the Jazz Band performed on 21 and 22 August. The theme was 1920's Flapper and the band members wore formal black dresses with red-sequined, feathered headbands. The varied programme was suitable for non hardcore jazz audiences. For matrics, Carla Stokes, Robyn Burrows, Yeukai Chamba and Dominique Jacobs, this was their last jazz band performance, a bittersweet occasion.
JAZZ BAND FUND-RAISER
The audience danced, applauded and gave a standing ovation at the end. The fund-raiser was a resounding success and the Jazz Band thank Ms Dayna Pearce for her commitment.
UBUNTU CULTURAL EVENING
WATERLOO HOSTEL HIGH TEA On a bright, clear Sunday in August, the kitchens were full of boarders, House Moms and Boarder Mistresses, all baking up a storm. The rainbow decorations going up in the diningroom looked quite magical and the Tech team and performers were testing the equipment. When they arrived, the parents were bowled over by the decor, the array of eats and the amazing show of talent from the cabaret performers. There was a wonderful atmosphere of real happiness and togetherness that shone through. The afternoon ended with all the hostel girls singing “Lean on Me”. Along the way we learnt that planning and preparation can be interspersed with dancing and singing to lighten the daunting task ahead. Mostly we came face to face with a ‘sisterhood’ experience that encouraged us to look at “sisterhood” during Women's Month. Thanks go to Nikiwe, Head of Hostel, and her team of grade representatives who worked very hard in planning the event. Parent comments received the next day: “An amazing event, the girls make us proud”, “this is a tradition worth keeping”, “Thank you for the joy of the afternoon”.
The Ubuntu Society Annual Cultural evening on 15 August was a wonderful occasion. This year we collaborated with Wynberg Boys' High and their school hall was decorated according to the theme: Celebrating 20 years of Democracy. There were many performances from various schools but the pinnacle was the WBHS and WBHS production, successfully depicting how far South Africa has come since 1994. The audience left the hall with a great sense of optimism about our country and the direction the youth are willing to steer it in. On Friday 15th August, the Grade 12 Life Sciences learners visited the Stellenbosch University medical campus to witness almost all they had learned over the past three years, in the flesh literally. The outing, led by friendly, knowledgeable SU students, was divided into two sections. Part one involved viewing actual cadavers which learners used to observe and explore various aspects of the human body. This was highly beneficial as actually seeing body organs - as opposed to just seeing pictures of them - aided their understanding of these organs and systems. Part two involved a tour around the Tygerberg Medical Morphology Museum where they could see and ponder upon various defects and syndromes and the physiological consequences thereof - extremely interesting and informative.
