WYNBERG GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL (Est. 1884)

Where Leadership Meets Excellence

FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF COLLEGIATE, MELITA BAGSHAW Welcome to fifteenth edition of the National All Girls’ Schools’ Sport and Cultural Festival! We are proud hosts of this festival in what is for the Collegiate Schools a th very special year – we celebrate our 140 birthday, and this festival is part of that celebration. If you look closely at the 2014 Festival logo, you will see several symbols: on the left are sticks and balls representing sports played at the festival; on the right you will see the masks symbolising the Ancient Greek Muses of Comedy and Tragedy. These masks embody the cultural side of the festival as expressed through mind and spirit. Connecting the two is the girl, the participant, and flowing from her the ivy leaves of Collegiate and the lamp of service. In 1874 the school was founded to provide an excellent education for the young ladies of Port Elizabeth. The founding Principal, Miss Isitt, had a vision for the school and by the end of the 1800s, girls were not only being taught to use their minds, but also to be part of the Games Club and to speak eloquently. That vision is encapsulated in the 2014 festival slogan, Where SPORT and SPIRIT meet. Without spirit, the games that will be played will be meaningless, and without sport, there will be no enjoyment in discovering the arts together. Collegiate has a tradition of service and of facta non verba. Over the four days of the festival, may you have a wonderful experience of the deeds that ALL on the Collegiate staff have done to make this year’s ‘All Girls’ Festival’ one to remember and a worthy celebration of our 140 years.
