NEWSLETTER Also available on our website : www.wynghs.co.za

Dear Parents The election of a new governing body for the next three year cycle is an important event in the life of the school. I am grateful that we had 236 parents who took the time to participate in this event, although it is only 15% of the parents on the voters' roll. Governors bring skills, perspectives or points of view that are sometimes missing from the school and its staff. School are very insular, interacting with other schools, the department of education and only to a very limited degree, the business world. The Governing Body, therefore, fills this gap and plays an important role in the life of the school. I have taken some extracts from the publications of the Governing Body Foundation who provided good information and support during this year's elections. They point out that governors are responsible for (amongst others): · the governance (not the management) of the school. They monitor and provide input via the various sub-committees (eg Finance, HR, Physical Amenities, Safety and Security etc.) and must meet once per term as a full board. · the overall vision of the school, and must review many of the policies such as the admissions, language, subjects offered, school hours, uniform and others. · the care and development of the school, recommendation of staff for appointment, and have overall control of the school finances. Their mandate is to work as part of a team to serve the general good of the school and to support the staff in their efforts to add value to the life of each learner entering the school. We are extremely fortunate to have committed governors who have offered their skills and their time to serve on behalf of all the parents, staff and learners of the school. We thank them for their willingness to serve the school in this way and look forward to their involvement in the school as we build an even better WGHS.

NASA VISITS WYNBERG

Catherine ‘Cady’ Coleman (left) is a chemist, a former US Air Force officer and a current NASA astronaut. She is a veteran of two space shuttle missions, and left the International Space Station on May 23 2011, after logging 159 days in space. Dr. Ellen Stofan (right) was appointed NASA Chief Scientist on August 25, 2013, serving as principal advisor to NASA on their science programmes and science-related strategic planning. Both Ms Coleman and Dr Stofan inspired the Wynberg girls and staff when they spoke at school on 23 March. The audience was treated to actual film footage from inside the Space Station and had the chance to ask many questions afterwards. Terms like “Never give up” and “You can be whatever you want to be” have become overused in recent times but Cady Coleman and Ellen Stofan are living proof of their truth. Thank you to Steve Sherman from Living Maths for organising this event and thank you to both of these amazing women for sharing their knowledge and wisdom and for being such inspirational role models for all of us.

The Grade 10 learners were tasked with making a cell cake using a variety of sweets to distinguish things like the nucleus, cytoplasm, ribosomes and mitochondria. The Grade 10ʹs were extremely creative using every type of sweet imaginable to create their cells. The Grade 10 CAT students were also making cakes motherboard cakes! Using a variety of sweets and icing, they had to replicate a computer motherboard. The aim here

is to make students aware of all the components in human cells and computer motherboards. And afterwards, they get to eat their creations!

MASTERCHEF CHALLENGE

PI CELEBRATIONS

On Friday 13 March, Copenhagen hosted an Interhouse Masterchef Challenge. Earlier in the term, each Head of House was given a packet of muffin mix which they used to raise funds for the ingredients for the challenge. This was a way to involve the whole house since only two chefs could participate in the actual competition. The chefs had to prepare a salad and a drink - no cooking was allowed. It was exciting to watch the preparation process, as well as to see the mouth-watering results. The meals were judged by Mrs Kourie and ex-Wynberg teacher, Mrs Pam Gore. Congratulations to all of the chefs who competed for the title of Wynberg Masterchef. The Challenge results were: 1st Wellesley, 2nd Waterloo and 3rd Silverlea. Bianca Venter & Tyra Petersen celebrate their close win!

The annual Pi Day celebrations were held on Friday 13 March, and provided an excellent opportunity for a house challenge. In preparation for Friday, the Matrics met in the Wellington

The silence from the audience was absolute as each participant went up for their recital. Everyone did exceptionally well, but special congratulations go to Mrs Hartmann, of Waterloo, who came first out of the teachers, and to Layla Omar, who recited Layla an astounding 414 digits Omar of pi, winning the student recital for Silverlea!

WYNBERG CAMPUS OF SCHOOLS SALUTES VOLUNTEER FIRE-FIGHTERS! On Monday 9 March, the heads of the four Wynberg Campus of Schools - Keith Richardson (WBHS), Shirley Harding (WGHS), Dee Cawcutt (WGJS) and Cedric Poleman (WBJS) - handed over a cheque for R95 000 to the Volunteer Wildfire Services. A collection was done for one day only at the four schools, and through generous donations from the learners, parents, families and friends, a staggering R95 000 was raised. Mr Richardson, speaking on behalf of the Campus, expressed our gratitude towards the VWS for their hard work and dedication. The cheque was handed over to volunteers Julie Gardiner and Adrian Marnewick who were extremely grateful for the donation and outpouring of public support.

Adrian Marnewick (VWS), Aman Abrahams (Grade 7 WGJS), Ashleigh Thompson Head of School, WGHS), Shirley Harding (Principal, WGHS), Dee Cawcutt (Principal, WGJS), Cedric Poleman (Principal, WBJS), Keith Richardson (Principal, WBHS), Tristan M端nz (Grade 7 WBJS), Almero Prinsloo (Head Boy, WBHS) and Julie Gardiner (VWS).

WYNBERG STAFF SPCA DONATION Dear Teachers and Staff at Wynberg Girls' High School, Your gift of R3,500 towards the animals in the recent Peninsula fires is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your generosity and kindness and for showing us that you really care and that we have your support. Our SPCA Inspectors had their hands full - day and night. Theirs is a demanding (and sometimes dangerous) field of work - and their efforts to reach animals in distress are exemplary. Arnold Palmer wrote: 'Always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you.' We like his words, because they ring true for the 'blood, sweat and tears' that are part of an Inspector's day. Also, nothing less than 'a total effort' would be acceptable for animals. We want to assure you that with your continued support, this will never change. Thanks again for everything you do to help make this a better world for animals. Yours sincerely, ALLAN PERRINS - Chief Executive Officer

BLOOD DONOR CLINIC On 4 March, Wynberg had the first blood donor clinic of the year and an astounding 80 people attended it! What a very successful day for WPBTS as they ended the clinic with 39 full pints of blood, 9 of which were from brand new donors. Thank you very much to everyone who attended - we hope to see you all at our clinic in term 2.

CAREERS EVENING

On the evening of 26 February, Wynberg hosted the annual Careers Evening. Students and parents from both Wynberg High Schools attended. Various colleges, tertiary institutions and universities were present, amongst them UCT, UWC, US, City Varsity, ETA College, SCAP, Ruth Prowse School of Art, Elizabeth Galloway Fashion Design and AFDA, to name a few. Students and parents explored these colleges, universities and specialized study institutions in the hall, ballet hall and gym. At 6pm there were a number of talks which included the fields of Advertising, Food Development, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Fashion Design, Finance and Medicine. There was also a guide to applying to universities correctly. The talks were repeated, which meant that students and parents could attend more than one. The evening was a huge success, with a large turnout from students at both schools. A huge thank you must go to Mrs Patel for all the planning that went into the evening, also to the universities and institutions and all the guest speakers - for the students who attended the evening, it was much appreciated.

LIFE SCIENCES KIRSTENBOSCH FIELD TRIP On 17 March, the Grade 10 Life Sciences students went on a field trip to Kirstenbosch. Once there, we split into groups and had an outside lesson about the various biomes found in the WCape. We learned a lot about the different rainfalls and temperatures, and, while walking through the gardens, teachers provided information about the various trees and plants. Once we had gone through all the biomes, we had a short lunch break during which we also finished our worksheets. The day went by very quickly - an obvious sign of enjoyment.

SPRINGFIELD HOSTS FILM FOCUS On Wednesday 25 March, several Grade 10s and 11s and their English teachers visited Springfield Convent to listen to a Short Film Focus presentation by Alyx Geanotes and Meg Rickards. The presentation was designed to introduce learners to their upcoming English project: producing a short film on a poem (Grade 10), and a Public Service Announcement (Grade 11). A few invaluable tips accompanied by some excellent advice was given by the presenters and last year's winning films were screened and discussed. We hope that Wynberg Girls' High will be able to submit some winning entries again this year.

CLOTHING EXCHANGE

Every year the Service and Cultural pillars work together to create an afternoon’s entertainment for Senior Citizens. While the Service pillars from WGHS and WBHS work at hosting the event - organising the invitations, the transport and the comfort of our guests - the Cultural pillars are responsible for the entertainment. Residents of several homes for the elderly, plus other family members, spent the afternoon with us. The entertainment included a variety of song, dance and music - some Hip Hop and contemporary dance from our Dance Society, performances from Ubuntu, and music from our Marimba Band, Orchestra and Jazz Band.

CANCER RELAY FOR LIFE On Friday 13 March, a total of 200 Wynberg girls took part in the CANSA Relay for Life 12-hour walk. The event enables teams to support CANSA and raise funds for cancer research in South Africa. The event opened with the reading of the CANSA Relay for Life mission statement and then a guard of honour was formed by everyone there as cancer survivors walked around the track. After sunset, the stadium lights were turned off and participants lit candles inside luminaria bags which encircle the track - they are dedicated to those who have been affected by cancer.

The second-hand uniform /clothing shop is open every Tuesday and Friday at break (10h45 – 11h45). There are also, sometimes, textbooks on sale. Convenor: Avril Greening 021-7970618 or 0835624773

COMEDY OF ERRORS Under the guidance of Mrs FilinovaBruton, the WBAA (Wynberg Boys' Acting Association), which includes girls from WGHS, has been hard at work preparing for the production of Comedy of Errors, which took place from 25-27 March, in the Clegg Hall. The production is an abridged version of Comedy of Errors, arguably the funniest of Shakespeare’s plays. A circus theme added to the entertainment.

BAND STAND @ THE WATERFRONT Congratulations to both WGHS and WBHS Jazz bands who both made it through to the finals of the High School Band Slam at the V&A Waterfront. 12 bands were selected from across the Peninsula to perform during February and the best 3 went through to the finals where there were two prizes up for grabs – the prize for best band of the evening and the prize for the band and school with the most spirit. The Band Slam final took place on Friday 13 March, at the Waterfront Amphitheatre WGHS’ second year in the final! Although the band members were nervous, they really got the crowd on their feet, cheering and dancing! All their hard work in rehearsals had paid off. At the end, MC Danilo Aquisto, announced that Settlers had won 1st prize - a musical consultation and installation at their school to the value of R20,000 from Marshall Music; and WGHS had won the R10,000 spirit prize – for the JAZZ BAND second time! Congratulations to Ms Pearce and her Band! What a feeling of #wynbergpride as the band and their supporters cheered and celebrated.

LOOKING FOR MATRIC INVIGILATORS WGHS is looking for any adult between the ages of 25 and 65 who would be available to invigilate Grade 12 National Senior Certificate examinations at the end of this year. The person may not have an immediate relative writing Grade 12 at this school. For further details, please contact Ms McCarthy at mmccarthy@wynghs.co.za .

MOTHERS WHO CARE “Mothers who Care operate under the umbrella of an international group of parents who are willing to “stand in the gap” before God, for their children, and the schools they attend.” WGHS would like to thank the small group of faithful mothers who pray for the learners, teachers and their families. At present, the group prays on a Friday morning for half an hour in the Memorabilia Room. If any mother, father, grandmother or grandfather feels called to support this Christian ministry, please contact Mrs Lynn Theunissen at WGHS. INTERSCHOOLS TENNIS

Erin Harris, Isobel Evans, Dana Arries, Inge Tripod, Tali Sulcas, Megan Farquhar, Savannah Wiegand, Catelin Marshall, Katherine Nicholls, Kayleigh Henderson

On Saturday 7 March, Wynberg played in the PGSGU interschools tennis tournament at Sans Souci. The participating schools were Sans Souci, Rustenburg, St Cyprians, Springfield, Wynberg and Herschel, and each school had a senior and junior team. Our senior team came 3rd overall - our 1st and 2nd couples both came 2nd in their sections. Well done to Tali Sulcas for playing exceptionally well and to Kayleigh Henderson who, playing in the junior section, played well and showed great improvement in her game. Afterwards, the girls all agreed that their hard work at practice had paid off and expressed a desire to improve next year. The matches were very exciting to watch, and we congratulate the girls for playing such top class tennis.

INTERSCHOOLS DIVING On Friday 13 March, the Diving Team took part in the PGSGU Interschools Diving competition at the Sea Point Pavillion. We left Wynberg with the wind howling and arrived at the Sea Point pool to the most perfect windless, beautiful day. The team really dived well and there were some good individual performances. In the Novice section, Mariné Bosch was placed 1st and Jessica Venter 3rd. In the U16 section, Sam Martin came 2nd and Emma Martin 3rd; and in the open section, Pia Sillifant placed 3rd. It was the contribution of the whole team, however, that eventually saw us beating Springfield by 4 points, coming 1st, and winning the cup! 2ND TEAM OAKHILL WATERPOLO TOUR On Thursday 26 February, Wynberg's 2nd Waterpolo team made the long drive to Knysna to take part in the Oakhill Open Water Festival. After singing the whole way to Knysna, we stayed in an amazing B&B where we had bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning, free WifI and super comfortable rooms. The tournament opening ceremony was held at the waterfront where all the teams came together for supper. All our games were against strong competitors but we always made an effort to lift our heads at the end of each match and to stick to accomplishing our main goal – Sportsmanship! Throughout the tour we made many friends with the different teams, particularly with Graeme College who became our "Brother School". At the closing ceremony/social on Saturday night, we joined Graeme College and had a great time, not least because we won the sportsman-ship award! On Sunday, after our last match, which was an extraordinary match where we played brilliant polo and worked really well as a team, we hopped onto the bus and started our long drive home. A special mention must go to the following girls who each received a Player of the match award: : Casey Valentine, Amber-Rose Bailey, Tyra Findlay, Amy Strybis, Casey Valentine and Brittany Gutuza. Finally, with our voices gone, many shoulder and back injuries, and our heads held high, we accomplished our goal and no words can describe the amazing experience each girl had on tour. We are grateful for being giving this opportunity and thank all the parents and sponsors. We also thank our fabulous Coach and Manager who made tour extra amazing. SA SCHOOLS’ ROWING CHAMPS The Peninsula Girls' Rowing Club (PGRC) was first established by Springfield Convent in 1997/98 as Springfield Rowing. It later opened to girls from other schools who were interested in joining the sport. This year we were fortunate enough to compete at the South African Schools Championships on the Roodeplaatdam in Pretoria. I competed in a doubles and a quad race, both 2km long races. We placed 3rd in the Emily van der Berg (right) & doubles race 2nd in the quad, and were her doubles partner with their bronze medals. proud that we would be taking home a medal. PGRC was selected as the top Junior Club in South Africa! Taking part in a sport such as rowing is time-consuming but it rewards you with a lifestyle rather than just being a hobby. Emily van der Berg

Tamia Geldenhuys, Casey Valentine, Tyra Findlay and Sade Allcock all passed their Synchronised Swimming Skills level 1 which means they qualify for the National Age Groups (NAG) Synchronised Swimming Championships. Out of the 30 girls who took part in the competition, only 5 girls passed, 4 of Back: Sade & Tamia them Wynberg girls, and Wynberg was Front: Casey & Tyra top school overall.

U14s @ WALLER CUP On Wednesday 11 March, Wynberg's U14A Waterpolo team played in the Waller Cup playoffs. We were very proud of the team for making it through to this point. The semi-final match was against Herschel and it was a very tough game which Wynberg lost 2-9. The 2nd chukka was by far Wynberg's best as the passes were accurate, the swimmers were quick, Wynberg scored and Herschel did not. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to next season. They have their eyes set on gold and will work hard to achieve this goal.

Caitlin Leatherby

Chelsea Tillett on Blazing Badger Chelsea achieved these results: 1st in Performance Riding; 4th in Dressage Novice 2; and 2nd in Dressage Novice 4. Caitlin came 1st in both of the 1m show-jumping classes. Congratulations to both of these girls.
