The Magic Hour By Vanessa Bates Directed by Chris Bendall
Thought you knew Grimm’s fairy tales? Think again. Little Red Riding Hood meets Trainspotting in this wicked retelling of classic bedtime stories. Helpmann Award winner Ursula Yovich (Australia, Jindabyne, The Secret River) plays a cast of sideline female characters who’ve been updated and dropped into the gutters and alleyways of bleak Australian life. From one of Australia’s most original contemporary playwrights, Vanessa Bates, The Magic Hour is a gutsy one-woman comedy told with dark humour and soulful song. A night of stories told at twilight with werewolves and a touch of magic…

Tegan Higginbotham IN
Emily Taylor in
Million Dollar Tegan
Cannonball
In a deeply impressive 55 minute performance that blurs the line between comedy and drama, Dandenong damsel Tegan Higginbotham bravely recounts her dubious decision to give pro-boxing a go. Spurred by her tomboy behaviour and inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby, Higginbotham peppers gags and A-grade comic digressions across an essentially dramatic story. She entered herself into a Pro-Boxing Competition and punched on in front of 1,500 people. It’s safe to say, her Mum wasn’t happy. Tegan builds to a fight finale so real, raw and moving it qualifies more as quality theatre than straight comedy.
Winner at the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival, Green Room Award, Emily Taylor brings her particular brand of black comedy to Wyndham.
“ ‘Belly laughs until the final bell.” Rhum
“ Unique and hilarious… a fearless performer.” Theatre Press
Delving into the complexity of modern urban life, comedic shape-shifter Taylor uses fragmented narrative to reveal the fantastical behind the mundane and the disturbing beneath the ordinary as her myriad of characters grapple with happiness and mortality, careening together towards their fates.
