Mayor’s Message As 2013 comes to a close I would like to reflect on the past 12 months of life in Wyndham. In October residents elected a team of 11 councillors to represent them for the next 4 years. All councillors have taken on this role seriously and we have worked extremely hard on being educated on the many issues, challenges and opportunities that we will face over this Council term. We hit the ground running with the announcement of the new suburb in East Werribee and the many other planning announcements by State Government. We had to advocate and lobby both State and Federal governments for external funds for major projects that will be built over the next two years. We have had many highs and lows though the year but this has made us a very strong, united team, which will help us over the next 3 years to achieve our vision for this City. This Council want to make a difference and we are planning to work with all sectors of the community. We want to listen and to take on board the many issues brought to us by residents. I felt extremely humble and honoured that I was given the opportunity to be the Mayor of this great City again this year, but I would like to add the Mayor is only as good as the team around them. On behalf of Council, we would like to wish you all a safe, healthy and happy festive season and we look forward to working with you all again in 2014. Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Heather Marcus

Million dollar traffic congestion campaign Wyndham City has committed $2 million over the next two years to tackle traffic congestion and transport issues in a bid to get Wyndham moving. Over the past 10 years, Wyndham has grown from a small outer suburb of Melbourne, to an exciting City of 187,788 people. While arterial roads and public transport are the responsibility of the State Government, Wyndham City works closely with State and Federal government to advocate for key projects to cater for Wyndham’s growth.

residents and businesses to identify priorities, increase campaigning to address congestion, complete works on roads and paths Council is responsible for, particularly to improve traffic flow, and develop studies and strategies for major improvements to transport infrastructure. • Some of the projects that are likely to be included in the campaign are:
This project will make it easier and safer for people travelling into the future Werribee Employment Precinct and will be of great benefit to Point Cook residents moving from home to work. It also allows quicker access to Point Cook shopping centre and community facilities. Project Cost: $11.5 million
Tarneit Road – South of Sayers Road One kilometre of Tarneit Road has been transformed from a rural road into a divided urban road with improved street lighting, traffic signals and pedestrian access at Bethany Road. Project Cost: $4.5million
Marquands Road
• Planning studies to look at bridges and underpasses at rail crossings in Wyndham’s west
Marquands Road has been changed from gravel to asphalt. This facelift improves access to Truganina and the West Meadows Lane area.
• Upgrades to sections of Leakes Road, Palmers Road and Derrimut Road
Project Cost: $1.2 million
• Working with schools to improve congestion and support people using a range of methods to take children to school. Wyndham City will soon be calling for interested members of the community to participate in the campaign.
Cambridge Reserve
Sports Pavilion - Complete For our young sporting stars, the new junior pavilion at Cambridge Reserve in Hoppers Crossing has just been completed and provides an updated facility for clubs and groups. While the new junior ovals were constructed a number of years ago, water restrictions meant they could not be irrigated.
www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/advocacy facebook.com/wyndhamcityliving
When recycled water became available, the ovals were turfed and made available to junior sporting competitions. Housing a social area, kiosk and toilet facilities, the $235,000 pavilion provides a comfortable and sheltered viewing space for spectators and will meet the needs of the teams that use the ovals. Wyndham Mayor, Councillor Heather Marcus, welcomed Premier Denis Napthine to Wyndham on 7th October, 2013 when he and State Cabinet Ministers held Community Cabinet in Wyndham. Councillors and residents took the opportunity to urge the State Government to address Wyndham’s growth and infrastructure needs, particularly as arterial roads, trains and buses are the responsibility of State Government. Wyndham Mayor, Councillor Heather Marcus (pictured left) and Andrew Elsbury, MLC for Western Metropolitan Region, (pictured right) opened Saltwater Reserve with a family day with fun, food and sporting demonstrations for kids on Sunday 6th October, 2013. Saltwater Reserve is a size equivalent to 11 MCGs and has been largely funded by Wyndham City at a cost of $26.3 million. Saltwater has multiple sporting fields, tennis and basketball courts, neighbourhood park, playground and dog park, which covers 22 hectares.

The Bridge was complex to build, as the 140 metre long footbridge spans the Werribee River and has been carefully placed between the River Red Gums that run along the river banks and through Wyndham Park. There are 148 types of plants and 50 types of animals in the area, including a platypus population in the river, so the construction team had to move the bridge sections into place without damaging trees or disturbing the wildlife. Spaces for the bridge supports were made along the river and in the park with minimal environmental impact. Wyndham can be proud of the now iconic Wedge Street Bridge and this commendation, received from the Civil Contractors Federation Earth Awards in the $1-5 million project category.
Have Your Say on
Wyndham’s Strategic Statement Wyndham City has reviewed its guiding document for strategic land use planning, the Municipal Strategic Statement (MSS), and is seeking community comment from 7th November to 20th December, 2013.
It also guides infrastructure development, including open space and recreational facilities, community facilities and roads and paths, so it’s important for the community to have a say.
Friday – 5.30am to 8.00pm 86 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing
Wyndham City and BDM Constructions have been recognised for excellence in constructing the Wedge Street Bridge to connect the vibrant Werribee CBD with Wyndham Park.
The MSS guides Council in decisions about the size and form of urban growth in Wyndham, development of an effective and integrated transport network and maintaining a healthy environment.

Opportunity to Shine – Youth Disability Taskforce Wyndham City is calling for nominations for a new taskforce for young people with a disability. It will offer an opportunity for young people with a disability to meet together, network and have a platform to voice and share issues to Wyndham City staff and Councillors. Taskforce members will be actively involved in visiting different venues and deciding on which is the most appropriate for their meetings. They will assess lighting, sound, floor coverings, furniture and ease of entry at potential venues. The Taskforce will also provide input into developing a resource or guidelines in various formats, which will be used to improve inclusion at meetings. If you are passionate, want to meet people and want have a say on what impact Council services and programs have on your life, then take the first step and contact us. Kevin Gill, member of the Werribee Bushwalking and Outdoor Club
Why I walk Retired engineer, 78 year old Kevin Gill of Werribee, walks an astounding 45 to 60 kilometres a week. A member of the Werribee Bushwalking and Outdoor Club since 2004, Mr Gill says keeping fit and healthy is his main motivation, and it seems to be working. “I have type two diabetes and, according to my doctor, I’ve got very good health.” “Some members at the club, they wish they can walk half the distance I do when they are my age,” he said. Most weeks, Mr Gill trains up to six days carrying a full day pack for 10kms, often alongside the Werribee River near the town centre. Another of his favourite Wyndham walks is through Werribee River Park, which winds past the beautiful K Road Cliffs. On Sundays, he usually goes on an eight to 14 km bushwalk with other club members.
Launch of ‘Why I Walk’ campaign
He was one of several Wyndham residents, who walk regularly, to join Victorian Health Minister the Hon. David Davis and Wyndham Mayor, Cr Heather Marcus, for the October launch of the ‘Why I Walk’ campaign. The campaign aims to get more local community members walking by promoting the health benefits of regular physical activity, local walking trails and local walking groups.

Litter Busters fighting dirty to keep it clean
This group may benefit you if you are looking for support, guidance, or just some cool people to meet, and hang out in a safe space and if you are under the age of 25.
Litter bugs who throw rubbish out the car window are on notice. A new campaign to reduce roadside littering is running across Wyndham City this summer and we aim to reduce roadside littering in the target areas by 30 per cent.
Q runs fortnightly, but dates and locations remain confidential until you contact us.
The education and enforcement campaign will target nine roadside litter hotspots, including major roads like Derrimut, Hogans and Wests Road. Funded by Sustainability Victoria, this project builds on Wyndham City’s recent, highly successful anti-litter campaign ‘Dumping is Damaging’, which cut dumping in Wyndham’s more secluded areas by 95 per cent.
Anyone who sees roadside litter bugs should call Wyndham City on 9742 0777
Litter Busters roadside signs, a designated litter trailer, car litter bags and magnets are being used to promote the anti-litter message. Wyndham Local Laws officers will have an increased presence in the target areas during the campaign, with roadside litterbugs facing fines of between $289 and $4,000.
Look out for the next Rainbow dance party in late January. Going by last year’s party numbers we are expecting more than 60 young people to attend.

Summer Snake Sightings Over the summer period Wyndham residents will enjoy barbecues, trips to the beach and longer, sunnier days - although we are not the only ones. Snakes will also be enjoying the warm weather so be aware when you’re out in our beautiful open spaces, or at home. Take precautions to keep yourself and your pets safe from snakes. While there is no sure way of completely preventing snakes from moving on to your property, there are things you can do: Keep grass vegetation short and tidy Do not have piles of wood, tin or tiles near the house Remove all rubbish and debris Keep bird cages free of spilled seed which will attract mice Ensure there are no gaps in or under your fences.
If you find a snake on your property, keep an eye on it from a safe distance and do not touch it. If the snake is visible, a qualified snake catcher from Wyndham City can attend and remove the snake. This service is free of charge. If the snake is no longer able to be seen you will need to contact a professional snake catcher who can search for the snake. This service is at a cost to the resident and services are advertised in local directories and online. If you have been bitten by a snake, seek medical attention by dialling 000 for an ambulance, and be aware of the first aid that can be applied. www.wyndham.vic.gov.au facebook.com/wyndhamcityliving 9742 0777
