Wyndham’s CEO Kerry Thompson and I recently returned from Canberra where we were among a delegation of members from Councils across Melbourne’s western suburbs advocating the needs of the region to members of the Federal Government and the Coalition. We held discussions with both sides of politics including Prime Minister and Federal Member for Lalor Julia Gillard and senior Government MPs.

Harrison Ward M: 0408 564 439 E: intaj.khan@wyndham.vic.gov.au
We made it clear that as the fastest growing municipality in Australia, Wyndham urgently requires more investment in roads, schools, hospitals, community and sporting facilities.

Melbourne’s West is a major engine room for economic growth in this country, but our potential is constrained by our lack of infrastructure. We hope our discussions with the Federal Government and the Coalition will make them aware of the importance of greater investment in Wyndham and Melbourne’s West. We will continue to strongly advocate our needs to make sure our voice is heard by those in power. Wyndham City Mayor, Heather Marcus

Advocating For Wyndham
Campaign Launch
Wyndham City and the Wyndham Industrial Liaison Development (WILD) Committee joined forces to launch a major campaign to lobby the State Government to urgently Fix Dohertys Road. Join the campaign to call for this singlelane route through the rapidly expanding Laverton North industrial precinct to be duplicated from Fitzgerald Road to Grieve Parade and for improvements the Hume Road and Cherry Lane intersections.
WILD Committee Chairman Mick O’Donnell said the group has been lobbying to Fix Dohertys Road for 20 years.
“Dohertys Road is a major arterial road for this area, but it’s an old road, designed and constructed more than 30 years ago.” Mick O’Donnell
With the highest commercial freight density in Australia, the precinct includes an estimated 460 businesses and employs more than 30,000 full and part-time employees.
“The intersections with Hume Road and Cherry Lane are both very dangerous. The long delay for vehicles using these intersections makes drivers impatient which, in many cases, has ended up in serious accidents, and over time, deaths.”
The frequency of reported collisions at the intersections along Dohertys Road appears to be increasing. Traffic volumes around these intersections have increased significantly and, as a result, many motorists now take greater risks.
For more information visit www.fixdohertysrd.com.au phone Mick O’Donnell on 9282 1290 or Wyndham City on 9742 0777 or visit www. wyndham.vic.gov.au www.facebook.com/wyndhamcityliving

Developing Wyndham
The face of the future Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre redevelopment Temporary gym now open A new state-of-the art gym is now available at Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre (WLEC) and will remain open for the duration of the redevelopment. This is a high quality gym space with dedicated cardio and stretch areas, rubber flooring in the weights area, a new reception area and air conditioning and wall mounted fans. Gym memberships are available and provide unlimited access to gym facilities at WLEC and WOOP for the duration of the redevelopment. WLEC aquatics are expected to close on Sunday 14th April, pending a decision by Council in March, so Werribee Outdoor Olympic Pool (WOOP) will be open during the redevelopment. Once finished, the redeveloped WLEC will have an expanded Aquatic and Leisure Centre, a new 50-metre pool, Victoria’s two largest waterslides, revamped Events Centre, large forecourt and piazza space and a reconfigured car park with additional spaces. With the rapid growth of Wyndham’s population, the redevelopment of WLEC will be critical to cater for our future needs and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we undertake this very exciting project. For more information phone Wyndham City on 9742 0777 or visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/WLEC

Funding for Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre redevelopment The $45 million redevelopment of the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre has moved a step closer with the announcement of $650,000 in funding from the State Government. The redevelopment plans will expand the number of indoor courts from 6 to 11 and add a show court with seating for around 3000 spectators. It will also include an expanded gym and fitness complex, a new foyer and entrance, function rooms, a new café with indoor and outdoor seating and provisions for national level facilities for sport including basketball, netball, badminton, table tennis and volleyball. Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty and Liberal Member for Western Metropolitan Region Andrew Elsbury said the redeveloped Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre would better serve the needs of Wyndham’s sporting clubs, associations and schools. “The centre’s easy access from Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat will give it the capacity to host state and regional competitions and events,” Mr Delahunty said. “Sporting facilities are important community assets and provide a social hub, particularly in growing areas like Werribee.” For more information visit: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ residents/community/wsfc

Wyndham City Libraries
there’s so much
to discover
Libraries in Wyndham
If you haven’t been to one of Wyndham City’s Libraries lately, you don’t know what you’re missing. Wyndham City Libraries are home to more than 243,000 items including books, magazines, audio books, language kits, videos, DVD’s, CDs, sheet music and large print books so there’s bound to be something for everyone. You can read for pleasure or study, look for jobs, or learn a new skill with the help of our expert library staff. Connect to the digital world using our public access computers and free Wi-Fi, attend a computer class, access a range of online resources for school assignments, learn a language or trace your family tree. They also offer a wide range of programs and events from talks from best-selling authors including Jodi Picoult, John Marsden and Andy Griffiths, to an incredible line-up of children’s entertainment including the popular Pre-School Storytime, Rhyme Time for children aged up to three, junior book clubs, School Holiday Activities, a Senior Computer Club, family history tours and a home delivery service for those unable to visit due to frailty, disability or illness.
But, that’s just the beginning...
In 2012, Wyndham City Libraries began an e-audiobook service that enables vision impaired library customers to borrow e-audiobooks and is the first public library service outside the United States to offer the AXIS 360 Baker and Taylor e-book platform. Wyndham City Libraries Manager Rhonda Rathjen said libraries have come a long way since the days of the old card borrowing system. Library patrons can now borrow items at one of the many electronic self-loan stations.
“Some people can’t afford a computer, so libraries are a critical resource. People can visit one of our branches and do research for a school project, update their resume and search for jobs and just keep connected with the outside world.” “We also have an online library, where people can browse the catalogue, reserve items and search through our online tutors, databases, journals and reference books – the opportunities are endless.”

Wyndham City Libraries operate four branches: Heaths Road Library, CBD Library, Point Cook Library and Wyndham Vale Library. Membership is free and you can also join the library Facebook page for regular updates. For more information on Wyndham City Libraries including how to join and the online catalogue visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au
Self-loan stations have provided library staff with more time to come out from behind the desk and attend to customer’s needs. “Libraries used to be a place where people would come in, borrow a book and leave. Libraries are now able to fulfil the social, cultural and learning needs of people at any stage of their life from toddlers to senior citizens - they’re places of lifelong learning,” Ms Rathjen said.

Wyndham CEO Kerry Thompson said it was one of the municipality’s leading fundraisers. “Every year around Australia, Relay for Life raises millions of dollars for research into treating, preventing and finding a cure for cancer,” Ms Thompson said.
“Wyndham City is delighted to support the hard work of the community and Wyndham Relay For Life organising committee. I would encourage residents, community groups and businesses to join in the fight against cancer by either taking part in the relay or donating to one of the teams.” “Every donation, no matter how big or small goes towards funding cancer research.” Time: From midday Saturday, 20th April to midday Sunday, 21st April Cost: $20 which includes a polo shirt Where: Victoria University, Hoppers Lane, Werribee.
