CUSTOMER NOTICE Please be aware that as part of the Government’s Clean Air Strategy, new legislation came into force on 1st May 2021 banning the sale of pre-packed house coal and wet wood in England. These changes mean: •
Selling traditional bagged house coal and wet wood in small units (less than 2m3) is now unlawful
•
Wet wood in volumes greater than 2m3 must be sold with advice on how to dry it before burning
•
Makers of solid fuels need to show they have a very low sulphur content and only emit a small amount of smoke
What is wet wood?
FUELS
Wet - also known as green or unseasoned wood - is often sold in nets and can be cheaper to buy. It contains moisture which, when burned, creates more smoke and harmful particles of air pollution (PM2.5) than dry wood. Wet wood can also damage chimneys much more, by allowing tar and soot to build up. Wynnstay already supply a variety of wood products which are kiln dried and have an extremely low moisture content. We also supply a low sulphur, smokeless alternative to house coal. This new legislation applies to England only. wynnstay.co.uk

High Velocity Basket Fan 24” 77927
Directly before and during calving, cows do not eat and drink, but they do lose water and electrolytes, and their blood calcium level goes down. This may turn the animal lifeless, resulting in a reduction in dry matter intake. Revive is a good source of energy, which rehydrates and replenishes mineral loss in the cow and increases calcium levels in the blood.

HARVEST SEVEN SILAGE SINS When it comes to producing good quality, nutritious silage, small things can make a big difference. A shortcut, or a small oversight can ultimately result in silage that is unusable, due to insufficient dry matter content; or worse, silage that is dangerous to herd health because of mould growth and the likely presence of mycotoxins or listeria.
So what are the seven silage sins? 1. Leaving dead grass in the sward
Any surplus grass at the end of the previous growing season must be removed completely, preferably by grazing or failing that, by topping. If left unchecked, all this does is die and subsequently provides nutrients that supports the growth of moulds and other undesirable bacteria that will remain in the sward until harvest. Removing this surplus grass helps to reduce the number of mould propagules in the harvested sward.
2. Harvesting over mature grass
“Sometimes harvesting over mature grass is unavoidable because of the weather conditions or because you require a mature low D value forage or if farmers are participating in environmental management schemes” explains Dr Dave Davies, a consultant at Silage Solutions Ltd. “However more often than not, this practice is carried out because farmers are looking to increase crop yield despite the trade off in forage quality. The problem is that as forage matures and the seed sets, the vegetative parts of the crop like the stems and the leaves begin to die and become increasingly vulnerable to invasion by fungal pathogens.”
3. Leaving cut grass in a narrow swath to wilt
If you want to reduce the likelihood of mould contamination within your silage, avoid leaving cut grass in a thick, narrow swath. Such swathes encourage mould growth because their density results in higher temperatures and humidity levels, both of which enable bacteria to thrive. In addition, thick swathes reduce the effectiveness of the wind in helping to dry the crop out. As a rule of thumb, you should aim to spread your grass over 80-100% of the original harvested area, as soon as possible after mowing.
4. Wrapping in the field
5. Not moving bales after wrapping
SEVEN SILAGE SINS
“Admittedly, the advice will always be to wrap bales as quickly as possible, and wrapping in the field would appear to facilitate this, however doing so can prevent other hazards”. “Dropping a well wrapped bale on to the recently cut sward presents the very real risk of holes being punctured into the wrap either by stubble or by stones. When that wrapped bale is then picked up and moved to the stacking site, this damage can be exacerbated. This applies even if the holes are miniscule. Holes caused by stubble may be small, but rest assured, oxygen is smaller!” It’s always recommended that you move bales as quickly as possible after wrapping. This ideally means within two hours, but where this isn’t practical you should aim to have them moved within eight hours. Once at the storage site, the bales should then be left in place until they’re ready to be fed out.
6. Spiking a bale, whether it’s wrapped or not
Many farmers will spike an unwrapped bale in order to move it to the wrapper. “Not only does the central spike hole allow oxygen back in, but you’ll also create lots of concentric holes around this as you move the bale. As for spiking a wrapped bale? That really is the ultimate sin”.
7. Not netting the bales to protect them from bird and vermin damage
Having spent the time, effort and energy creating baled silage, it’s hard to imagine that farmers are prepared to needlessly squander the fruits of their labours, but many do every year. All prices exclude VAT

CATCH CROPS Catch crop mixtures are perfect for providing a cost-effective and balanced feed for livestock. In terms of resource, mixtures like the below are fairly low input – with minimal growing costs. However, they can produce a vital feed when forage is in short supply. Whether your focus is energy content, protein or rapid establishment, the Wynnstay range of catch crop mixtures includes top quality varieties, guaranteed to perform in terms of both yield and quality. Catch crops can also benefit soil health by utilising the available nutrients in the soil after the previous crop and then depositing them back onto the soil as manure, increasing organic matter and improving the soil structure.
WYNNSTAY ENERGY BOOSTER
This high yielding catch crop is fast to establish and extremely palatable with a slightly higher energy content than the other catch crop mixtures. It will produce huge yields and the kale will help with it’s winter hardiness.

ADDITIVE Ensiling advice for maize and wholecrop. When ensiling both maize and wholecrop there are similar considerations: • Fermentation losses are ‘invisible’ and in well-fermented silages the fermentation process can account for 10% of the harvested dry matter being lost. In silages where the fermentation process has been less efficient these losses in dry matter can be substantially higher than 10% • Maize, and to an even greater extent wholecrop cereals, are prone to aerobic stability issues resulting in DM losses due to heating in the clamp. The better consolidated these silages are, the lower the losses Some additives are concerned solely with aerobic stability and whilst it is important to address these issues, the savings that can be made by improving the efficiency of the fermentation are even greater. The best approach is to use a good quality additive which tackles both aspects. The aim should be to effectively reduce the ‘invisible’ fermentation losses whilst at the same time reducing more obvious losses due to heating in the clamp. Ecosyl additives such as Ecocool have been shown to typically reduce the fermentation losses by half and also to improve aerobic stability, keeping the silage cooler for longer. In addition, the Ecosyl range has a considerable weight of evidence from independent feeding trials which demonstrate improved animal performance for dairy, beef and sheep.

ANIMAL HEALTH Mid-Season Cattle Worm and Fly Control Roundworms in cattle can reduce growth rates by up to 30%1 so it is important not to delay the mid-season pour-on dose as this potentially leads to a loss of production as the worm burden could start to impact on growth rates. It can be hard to notice the economic impact of worms unless regular weighing is taking place as reduction in growth rates will take place before any more obvious clinical signs are seen. CYDECTIN 0.5% Pour-On for Cattle is an easy to use treatment with a short meat withdrawal of 14 days. It contains the active ingredient moxidectin, which has the longest dosing interval of 8-10 weeks, meaning that the number of cattle handlings in the summer can be reduced. CYDECTIN Cattle Pour-On allows for flexibility of treatments, has a rain fast formulation and there is no need to set stock the animals. When treating cattle it is important to make sure the right product is being used at the right time. Animals should be weighed to make sure the right dose is given – if animals are underdosed then this could lead to an increase in worm resistance.
29201, 13193
Don’t forget about flies! It is important to act early and quickly when it comes to fly contril and fly nuisance on cattle has been shown to reduce milk yields by up to 0.5 litres/cow/day or growth rates by 0.3kg/head/day.2 In conjunction with good farm hygiene, residual pour-on pyrethroid treatments such as Fly & Lice Spot On™ are licensed to control insects for up to eight weeks, depending on species and population.

ANIMAL HEALTH The Benefits of Good Worm Control As protein demand increases worldwide, efficiency in production is crucial to meet this challenge. Internal parasites are the greatest cause of lost production in grazed ruminants, so their management and control are vital to enable sustainable production from pasture. Stomach worms in lambs are the major production limiting parasites in UK grazing systems, they cause reduced carcase quality, weight loss, delayed finishing and decreased wool production. Gut worms result in reduced weight gains (up to 47%) and reduced wool growth (up to 21%)1. Good control of worms can result in up to 4.7kg extra live weight during the grazing season2. Higher lamb DLWG means faster finishing and maximises the potential of feed input. Control CYDECTIN 0.1% Oral Solution for Sheep has the longest dosing interval of 8 weeks with a meat withhold of 14 days. This allows it to be used strategically to control worm burdens in lambs. Having a long dosing interval gives many advantages such as a reducing workload and decreasing the number of doses needed, which in turn can lead to less stress on the lambs, improved growth rates and lower input costs. There are many options for worm control and in order to have an effective strategy it is important that a farm parasite control plan has been created in conjunction with your animal health provider. Whatever options you have in mind, advanced planning is the way to maintain good animal health and maximise productivity from grassland.
