VENTILATION Ventilation playing key role in beef enterprise success For Nuffield Scholar, vet and beef producer Rob Drysdale optimal dry matter intake (DMI) is integral to his system at StraightLine Beef.
into the cattle sheds, to help maintain humidity and temperature. When running, the fans create a high-speed wave of air directed over the cattle and across the floor. Unlike traditional panel and basket fans, the cyclone fan produces a cooling wave of fresh air that surrounds the cow. This not only reduces heat stress which negatively impacts feed intake, it also keeps bedding dryer. Additional lights were also fitted in the finishing shed to increase the amount of perceived daylight hours for the cattle, extending day length to 18 hours, 365 days per year. This encourages cattle to feed for longer, boosting feed intake. An individual large fan costs ÂŁ1.20/day to run and the additional lighting costs ÂŁ11/day, but through delivering improvements in cattle performance, this is easily paid for. When the system was turned on, DLWG jumped by 150g/head simply due to the extra feed intake.
In achieving this, he has adopted techniques commonly used in the dairy industry, and alongside the provision of a consistent ration, airflow and lighting are a key part of his strategy to boost DMI and ultimately performance. This has seen the unit develop a computerised mechanical ventilation and artificial daylight strategy for the cattle sheds, an approach not trialled in beef systems in the UK before. Last year, sets of air intake and large cyclone VES fans supplied by Wynnstay were installed

FEED Supamet MP and Dynamet MP Fats for improved production efficiency and milk solids
As part of our new AminoMatch nutritional approach two new supplementary fat products have joined the range. Supamet MP and Dynamet MP, these contain a blend of fatty acids at the required ratios to meet the differing requirement of early and mid-lactation, without suppressing dry matter intakes. During this stage of lactation an emphasis needs to focus on using fatty acids which will promote improved feed efficiency.
Supamet MP
Is a blend of C16:0 and C18:1 fatty acids based on the latest research done by Adam Lock for early lactation cows. It will provide more effective energy to the cow to enable her to reach peak yields and produce higher levels of energy corrected milk.
Dynamet MP
Is best used in early and mid-lactation cows due to lower levels of C16:0 and higher C18 fatty acids. C18:1 which improves the total digestibility of fatty acids and partitions nutrients towards body reserves to help reduce body condition loss during Negative Energy Balance. It also has higher levels of Omega 3 from marine oils proven to have a positive impact on reproductive performance. One of the additional benefits of these products is their ability to correct milk fat depression, a common problem at this time of year.

6 different raw materials Absorbs mycotoxins Works at different pH levels Milan University trial work
Mycotoxin Binder
Easy to feed - 50g/head/day
Can you identify with any of these problems?
Biobind is a combination of six different raw materials to ‘mop up’ the main mycotoxins found in feeding stuffs, especially forages and cereals. Mycotoxins that are targeted by Biobind include Fumosinin B1, Zearalenone, Aflatoxin, Vomitoxin and Ochratoxin making the product broad spectrum.
Mycotoxins can cause: • Oestrogenic • Swollen hocks
It is available as a free flowing powder that can be incorporated into TMR or home mixes. Contrary to many of its competitor products, Biobind operates at different pH levels therefore working in both the rumen (pH6) and in the gastro-intestinal tract (pH3).
• Bulling activity • Milk loss • Poor growth • Poor condition • Poor feed intake
Feed Rate: incorporate into TMR at 50g per head per day.
Wynnstay RUMEN BUF for SARA (Sub Acute Rumen Acidosis) Wynnstay RUMEN BUF combines the buffering capacity of: Sodium Bicarbonate Acid-Buf AGMA FG85 Calcined Magnesite Salt included to enhance palatability A broad spectrum approach to addressing problems associated with SARA

PREMIER BUCKETS Improve suckler fertility to drive profitability AHDB estimate that increasing the number of calves reared per 100 cows put to the bull by just 2% can increase calf sales by up to £1,000 per year. Ensuring good fertility of your breeding cows and heifers has the largest influence on this financial figure with ensuring you cover simple nutritional requirements key to supporting fertility. The combination of energy supply in the diet and copper status of animals are two of the leading influences on fertility. A recent UK survey has shown that in excess of 50% of beef cows were copper deficient and was linked to those animals’ more typical extensive grazing existence where they are rarely offered supplementary feed. Copper has a direct influence on fertility so should not be over-looked in extensively grazed animals offered minimal supplementation. Energy is similarly, if not more, important as it impacts cow body condition score and in turn the cows’ ability to return to oestrus and support conception rates following calving. A difficult year where a long winter and slow start to spring has been followed by an extended dry period with dwindling grazing supplies for many has resulted in many cows not being in the ideal body condition to support performance. Wynnstay Premier Cattle Booster is specifically formulated to help support fertility as it contains a good level of energy plus minerals and vitamins, including an optimum level of copper.

TUPPING Wynnstay Premier Energy to help lift lambing percentage and profitability In a perfect world every ewe should give birth to two lambs, but with an average lambing percentage of just 151% in the UK, there is plenty of room for improvement especially where profitability from lamb returns is concerned. The starting point is tupping, with ewe body condition and nutrition being fundamental to the success of this key stage of the production cycle. Ewes needing to gain, or even hold body condition during this critical time have similar energy requirements to a twin-bearing ewe in the run up to lambing. As grass quality declines later in the season, grass alone plus a mineral supplement will not be sufficient for the ewe to meet her requirements. Offering a free access, molassed feed bucket not only reduces the workload of the producer, as they do not need to be put out daily, but also reduces stress on the animals, poaching around feeding areas and enables better forage utilisation. In addition, they supply essential energy and protein to help ewes to reach and maintain an ideal body condition. A recent analysis of 12 independent tupping studies from around the country, covering both lowland and hill flocks, conducted under a wide variety of conditions, demonstrated an increase in lambing percentage (up to 22%) when free access supplements were offered at tupping time. Scanning data from these trials also showed that the increases seen were largely due to a rise in the number of twin-bearing ewes and not an increased number of triplets. Wynnstay Premier Energy, is a low moisture feed bucket suitable for feeding both ewes and tups from two weeks pre-tupping for eight weeks. The high energy level helps ewes to achieve, and maintain, the correct body condition for optimum reproductive performance whilst buckets also provide key elements such as cobalt and selenium which are important at this critical time. Research using buckets pre-tupping and into early pregnancy has shown repeated, consistent benefits to performance and profitability – something producers cannot afford to ignore.

LAMB FINISHING Bolus lambs around weaning for quicker finishing and increased profit Maintaining lambs’ growth rates, health and vitality from birth is crucial because this determines finishing time and ultimately, profitability. It is therefore important that finishing lambs receive the optimum levels for their weight, of the essential trace elements; selenium, iodine and cobalt, along with copper if required. Dr Elizabeth Berry BVSc, PhD, MRCVS, Company Veterinary Director of Animax, comments “Trace element deficiencies in lambs after weaning are common and impact on growth and performance. It is best to bolus around weaning using a specific bolus for lambs such as Tracesure® Lamb Finisher.’’
Bolus around weaning to:
• Finish lambs early so you catch the higher market prices • Increase production efficiency by maximising the use of energy and protein from grazed crops • Reduce costs and the need for extra concentrates • Maintain post weaning performance
Tracesure® Lamb Finisher boluses:
• Can be given to lambs from 20kg • Gives optimal, consistent supplementation of the essential trace elements in a single, small bolus
LAMB FINISHING
• Gives a long-term supply of trace elements and lasts for up to 5 months • Available with and without copper Rob Stephens, from Brecon comments “We buy lean lambs and we don’t quite know their history when they come to us, so we bolus them with Tracesure® Lamb Finisher with Copper* to give them a daily release of cobalt, selenium, iodine and copper. It does a good job, in fact it is a phenomenal product. We only use feed for some triplets and pet lambs now and that’s about it. We are making a massive saving on cake.”

GRASS SEED Autumn Re-seeding - Q&A with Adam Simper Quality grass is a cost-effective part of feeding and regular reseeding ensures that the required nutritional value of the ley is maintained. New leys can help deliver a 33% increase in yield in the first year compared to a typical old sward, and in a drought year this can increase up to 50%.
When should I reseed in the autumn?
Autumn reseeding should ideally take place in August until mid-October. However this will vary depending on the species used, weather conditions and whether the mix contains clover or not.
What should I think about when it comes to selecting the right mixture?
The first things to consider are how long you would like the ley to last and what you want the mix to do – is it a short/ medium term mix for silage or a medium/long term mix for grazing and/or silage? Another important consideration should be whether the mix would benefit from additional species such as clovers. I would always advise to speak to a Wynnstay specialist for bespoke advice on the best mixture for you, making sure that all the varieties within the mix are on the Grass and Clover Recommended List for England and Wales.
Which fields should I reseed?
It is often suggested that you should look to reseed about 10-15% of your grassland each year. However, the main factors to consider are: • Whether there is a high level of weeds, such as docks and thistles, in the ley • How well the ley responds to nitrogen applications • Are the leys producing less forage/acre and is the regrowth slower after a graze or cut
