LAMBING Colostrum management at lambing Ingestion of an adequate amount of colostrum in newborn lambs is potentially the single most important part of the lambing event, providing essential protection against disease as well as energy, minerals and vitamins for growth. Ensuring the three golden rules of colostrum management – quality, quantity and quickly – are met will underpin lamb performance in both the short- and long-term, yet colostrum management is commonly an area over-looked in the day-to-day of lambing time. Lambs are born with no circulating antibodies of their own and are reliant on ingesting and absorbing them from the ewe’s colostrum – known as passive immunity. Without the protection afforded by this passive immunity lambs are at increased risk of contracting disease. The aim should be for lambs to take a minimum of 210ml/kg live weight of good quality colostrum within the first 24 hours following birth. Where colostrum is in short supply then the aim should be to provide all lambs with at least some maternal colostrum if possible, and use a high-quality colostrum supplement, such as Wynnstay Ovi lam Gold, to top up. Wynnstay Ovi-lam Gold is unlike many other colostrum supplements, it mimics ewe colostrum as it is derived from whole, natural colostrum. This enables it to deliver colostral fat, proteins, growth factors, hormones, vitamins and minerals which are associated with immunity and therefore health making them critical to lamb survival.

MAIZE Tips for growing maize under film When offered as part of a balanced diet, maize silage will help drive livestock production and feed efficiency, making it a highly valuable home-grown forage source that can maximise production per hectare. Growing maize under film provides the opportunity to sow the crop much earlier in the season and therefore greatly extends the window for growth. The potential of an earlier harvest provides an extended window of opportunity to get another crop in the ground post-harvest. Clearly there are increased costs with growing maize under film, but this is balanced by a reduction in spend on starter fertiliser and benefits in the value of DM/tonne and starch/tonne, which more than outweigh the additional cost.

Choosing the variety
Most varieties can break through the film, but some are more able to withstand the extreme growing conditions. Establish your crop goals from the outset and discuss the variety options with your Agronomist.
Choosing the film
Price is obviously a key consideration, but more importantly consider the quality of the product and the photo and biodegradability characteristics. A film that degrades too rapidly or too slowly will limit the crops - potential.
