AUTUMN CEREALS Mitigating against the spread of blackgrass in the west Blackgrass is posing an increasing threat to growers in the west of the country but there are steps that can be taken to reduce its potential impact. Blackgrass presents a huge management challenge for arable growers. Its persistent threat and subsequent impact on farms across the country, particularly in the east, has been one of the biggest issues facing modern arable production. For ‘clean-farms’, managing the obvious risks of introducing it on-farm via straw, machinery, or through purchased seed, is vital to keep this tenacious weed out. Once on-farm, it’s control is often reliant on cultural control methods, such as a shift to spring cropping, as witnessed in the east. As blackgrass moves west across the country, growers are being urged to take proactive measures to prevent the weed becoming established on ‘clean’ land. It is well known that blackgrass can enter farms through a combination of routes, making it difficult to prevent. But farmers can mitigate risk by monitoring all inputs, including all tillage machinery, and by only buying seed from a known, responsible source that is blackgrass free.
Cereal seed production
Wynnstay has invested heavily in commercial seed cleaning facilities at Shrewsbury, one of very few seed production plants to be based in the west. This has been instrumental in producing blackgrass free seed - offering a point of difference over plants located in the east, where blackgrass is prolific.
AUTUMN CEREALS
This season, Wynnstay is leading the way in blackgrass free seed and has in excess of 2,000 ha of their HiGene seed* being grown in the west, on blackgrass free land. For growers looking to mitigate against the risks of buying in blackgrass, it provides peace of mind, and a safer alternative to buying in seed produced in the south or east of England. A quality crop starts with quality seed and it is a sensible decision to ensure seed is sourced from ‘clean’, blackgrass free land, which is produced to high specifications to ensure a blackgrass free status is maintained, or an existing burden is not enhanced. For specific advice on growing autumn cereals, contact Wynnstay Arable Specialists to discuss your 2017 options. The movement of blackgrass from east to west Map published by kind permission of National Farm Research Unit
*Blackgrass free seed: Based on official certification purity results. Cereal seed grown by Wynnstay is grown on fields that are free from Blackgrass. Occasionally ‘as grown’ seed is sourced from a third party. A 3kg search is then carried out on the intake sample and the official cleaned sample to confirm freedom from Blackgrass.

SILAGE ADDITIVE Improving silage quality Wynnstay work closely with silage additive supplier, Volac to ensure that customers are receiving the best products and specialist advice, in order to maximise their silage quality. In line with this, Volac have recently launched a new initiative; ‘Cut to Clamp’ which is intended to raise the profile of good silage as a vital part of modern farming, showing how it can really make a difference to overall farm efficiency and profitability.
Six stages to good silage production Cutting: Timing is key. Aim for the yield you need at the highest quality possible Tip: Consider type/stage of crop, weather conditions, contractor availability and farm pressures
Wilting: Rapidly wilted silage contains less water and nitrogen, and more dry matter (DM) and sugar. It has been proven to increase animal performance Tip: Leaving grass to wilt also reduces haulage
Harvesting: Too short a chop length can lead to scouring animals, too long and it won’t consolidate effectively Tip: Ensure knives are kept sharp and adjusted
Treating: Applying a proven silage inoculant is quick and easy to do, and will pay dividends later with lower DM losses Tip: Choose a silage inoculant that reduces dry matter losses and enhances milk production, which has good digestibility and palatability and is easy to use, liquid or dry
Clamping: The denser the silage, the lower the DM losses, so consolidation is key during packing of the clamp Tip: To prevent air spoiling the silage, seal the clamp with high quality, overlapping sheets, weighed down well especially at edges
Feeding: Good clamp management now is vital to reduce aerobic spoilage and DM losses
For more information on silage management and on the Wynnstay range of silage additives, please call us on the number below and we will arrange for a specialist to contact you.

HARVEST Baletite ‘Film & Film Wrapping’ • Innovative five layer blown film replacement for netwrap in round silage bales • Created for next generation balewrappers that can apply film instead of net • Baletite provides an additional air barrier and creates a better bale shape by exerting a tighter grip around the bale circumference • Baletite reduces silage wastage as no baled fodder can become enmeshed in it. Produced from the same material as balewrap meaning Baletite doesn’t have to be separated from balewrap after use. Instead, both films can be recycled together thereby saving time and labour In trials, undertaken in working farm conditions it was demonstrated that the Film & Film wrapped bales had: • 7.5 % less DM losses on F&F bales compared to netwrap bales due to an enhanced fermentation process. • 80 % less DM losses on F&F bales compared to netwrap bales due to mould formation on the bale. The reduced losses that resulted through the use of the F&F wrapping system meant that the farmer gained more higher quality forage to feed to his herd. Innovative 5 layer film that offers an alternative to netwrap in round silage bales.
Piippo Hybrid Netwrap 4600m • Strongest net wrap on the market with a breaking strength of 290kgf – 320kgf (kilogram force) • 4600m role under 44kg in weight • Hybrid net wrap will fit all types of balers • Extremely high breaking resistance and UV resistance, the tightest bales can be wrapped without any risk of bale bursting • Longer rolls means less down time and more baling in the field

Selling Grain? Reason to get excited about maize
Forage maize has become British dairy farmers' main alternative to grass silage in recent years, so selecting the right variety is essential to produce the highest quality feed.
To maximise your return call the trading team
The gold choice for 2017 is Reason; the early maturing variety which produced bumper yields of up to 26 tonnes/acre for some growers, making it a popular choice for the coming year. It combines high DM yield content, a high starch value with exceptional plant digestibility to produce the highest ME yield (MJ/ha) of any variety in its class. This outstanding feed quality results in cows producing milk at lower cost per litre, impacting the bottom-line.

ANIMAL HEATH Worm control with Panacur® pays off Planned worm control with Panacur® Bolus saves money. Waiting until clinical signs are seen in youngstock – such as weight loss, scours and dehydration – means that production losses are already stacking up. Higher rainfall in recent years has provided ideal breeding conditions for gut parasites. Numbers have, therefore, reached higher peak numbers and been maintained for longer. Consequently, it is well worth reviewing worm control for the new season and ensuring that a cost-effective product like Panacur® Bolus – with long term efficacy – is used. Continuous action from the slow-release of active ingredient in Panacur® Bolus, fenbendazole, kills all major stomach worms and lungworm. It is effective for 140 days and prevents the build-up of infective larvae on grazing at turnout. Poorer growth rates and bodyweight losses mean that in replacement heifers, puberty and age at first calving are delayed. In beef cattle, it takes more feed to achieve target weight gains and more days to finishing. But trials have shown that grazing stock protected by Panacur Bolus deliver impressive weight gains. And one bolus makes worming less labour intensive than two pour-on applications.

ANIMAL HEATH Protect your growing lambs from disease threats
A good start deserves a good finish. Sheep producers are being urged to achieve the full value for this year’s lamb crop by vaccinating the lambs against pasteurellosis and the main clostridial diseases. If ewes are on the Heptavac®-P Plus system and have been boosted in the run up to lambing then their lambs will also gain immunity from drinking her colostrum. But this passive immunity only lasts for so long. Lambs that receive a good intake of colostrum only have antibodies against pasteurella for up to four weeks and clostridia for up to 12 weeks.
ANIMAL HEALTH
Lambs can be protected themselves by vaccination with either Heptavac®-P Plus or Ovivac®-P Plus from three weeks of age. The primary course involves two 2ml vaccinations 4-6 weeks apart. The first dose is a primer, while the second produces effective immunity. Animals to be kept for breeding (i.e. those previously vaccinated with Heptavac®-P Plus) simply need a booster of Heptavac®-P Plus within 12 months – given at the same time as the rest of the flock get their annual pre-lambing booster – with an annual booster 4-6 weeks before lambing every year thereafter.
Their mothers’ protection gave them a great start in life. Make sure you continue to protect them against pasteurellosis and clostridial disease – these two proven killers are on your farm right now. Vaccinate your lamb crop from three weeks of age with two 2ml doses of Ovivac-P Plus 4-6 weeks apart. The first dose is a primer while the second produces effective immunity.

HEALTHY COW TRANSITION A healthy transition to maximise milk yields Cows reach their peak lactation at about 6-10 weeks after calving. By managing their blood calcium levels and energy balance correctly during the period around calving, you can maximise milk yields. Cows go through significant metabolic changes in the period around calving • Calving results in a loss of fluid and electrolytes • The demand for calcium goes up dramatically • The start of milk production results in a negative energy balance
HEALTHY COW TRANSITION
If the transition to lactation is not managed properly, it can often lead to a high rate of involuntary culling in the first 60 days after calving and result in a negative economic impact for your farm.
Immediately after calving, blood calcium levels drop significantly. Cows try to respond to this drop by increasing uptake of calcium out of the ration and by mobilising calcium from their bones. Problems with low blood calcium levels occur more often in older cows as they have a less active calcium metabolism. Dairy cows in negative energy balance have an increased risk to develop clinical or sub-clinical ketosis. Ketosis in dairy cows will have a negative impact on dry matter intake, health, fertility and production of the lactating cow. Recent evidence suggests that sub-clinical ketosis in cattle is much more common than clinical ketosis.
