MAIZE Factors influencing a successful crop Much of the UK has seen an early maize harvest this year with many crops being harvested in September. Attention now turns to analysing the results from harvest to establish whether this maize growing season has been a success, in particular considering the challenging weather conditions. As a forage crop, maize is palatable, high in energy, starch rich and has a good ME – all of which contribute to improved milk and meat production. Of course, the factor which has greatest infl uence over the success of the crop is the weather, and this is totally out of our control. 2018 saw challenging weather conditions during both the winter and summer seasons. My advice to all growers is to focus on the areas you can control and apply attention to detail to every aspect of the crop’s management. At Wynnstay, our specialists provide bespoke advice on all aspects of maize crop management:

ANIMAL HEALTH Liver Fluke- know the facts!

Liver fl uke, Fasciola hepatica, is a highly pathogenic parasite which causes severe liver damage, especially in sheep, and can result in the sudden death of previously healthy animals. Millions of pounds are lost every year by livestock producers due to liver fl uke with the cost of disease per aff ected animal noted as £6 per lamb and £90 per calf.1

Fluke lifecycle

All three stages of liver fl uke damage the liver and can cause clinical disease and production losses. The lifecycle of the fl uke has a portion outside of the animal and involves a mud snail which thrives in wetter areas. It is therefore unsurprising after the prolonged above average weather experienced this summer that current guidance from the NADIS August parasite forecast predicts moderate risk in the north and west of Scotland, and low risk in all other regions. However, this doesn’t mean that there will be no, or limited, fl uke across the country in autumn, so it is important to still remain vigilant.

Consider local factors

Control programmes should always take into account the farm history, topography, geographical location and the prevailing weather. Even in years where disease challenge may be lower than normal, vigilance is still important, and special consideration should be placed on fi xing any leaky water troughs, fencing off wet or boggy areas in fi elds and maintaining eff ective drainage to reduce snail habitats.

Sustainable liver fluke control

The four elements of sustainable liver fluke control are: 1. Pasture protection – to prevent liver fl uke eggs reaching the pasture when snails are active

3. Grazing management – to avoid grazing high risk pastures with susceptible animals at high risk times of year 4. Strategic treatments for at risk animals – controlling the right stage of liver fl uke, at the right time, using the right product.

MAIZE HARVEST MAIZE HARVEST TOP TIPS TO MINIMISE LOSSES DURING CLAMP FILLING AND STORAGE: Thanks to its high nutritional content, maize silage has a lot to offer as a forage option for both dairy and beef herds. However, maize can be a marginal crop if not harvested and ensiled correctly.

Make sure that the clamp has been thoroughly cleaned to avoid contamination from old silage or other contaminants Ensure side sheets are used to line the clamp. Make sure that you leave sufficient film at the top to enable a good overlap - side sheets should overlap with the top sheet by at least 2m Fill the silage clamp in even layers, with layers no more than 15cm deep. Thicker layers trap pockets of oxygen and cannot be consolidated evenly

Compact the crop as you go The walls of the silage clamp are a particular challenge. It is best to fill the sides of the clamp to form a ramp running away from the wall so that the sides can be compacted properly - without the risk of damaging the side sheets with the tractor

Start at the back of the clamp Rather than filling right to the front fill up to the maximum height at the back Move forward with a ramp at an approximate angle of 30° The top sheet can be pulled back during filling as each section is completed allowing fermentation to begin sooner thus improving silage quality and reducing losses This technique reduces the risks of over rolling the front section of the clamp which can cause poor quality silage Never roll silage the next morning because carbon dioxide will have been produced overnight and the fermentation process will have begun. By rolling you will squeeze the carbon dioxide out and introduce more oxygen thus reducing fermentation, reducing sugar content and increasing losses If filling again the next morning, fill the clamp with at least 30cm of forage and compact as you go

Seal the clamp immediately after filling, even if this is late at night. Pull the sheet over and place sufficient weight to hold the sheet down overnight
