CEREAL SEED Seed varieties for 2017 This season Wynnstay is leading the way in blackgrass free seed. With 2,000ha of Hi-Gene seed being grown in the west on low blackgrass risk land. A quality crop starts with quality seed from ‘clean’ land, to ensure a ‘no blackgrass’ status is maintained. Why take the risk?

Wheat

New entrants in 2016, Graham, a hard group 4, and group 2 milling wheat KWS Siskin are really looking the part this year, and we expect them to increase their market share going forward. Some of the new varieties are offering a step up in disease rating and potential yield. Of these, Shabras, a hard group 4, will be attractive to growers, particularly in the west, as it is the highest yielding in the region and has early maturity. It also looks useful as a potential new second wheat, as many growers are looking to find an alternative to replace JB Diego. The other feed variety to look out for is Dunston, which looks to be a good all-round first and second wheat option. It offers stiff straw and good resistance to Septoria Tritici, with a rating of 6.7. This won’t have been fully tested this year, with disease pressures remaining low, but for other seasons this characteristic will play its part and really stand out compared to other varieties. For those looking for a group 1 wheat, KWS Zyatt is a good consideration. It’s the highest yielding new milling wheat, offering a feed-type yield, with very strong agronomics, and a Septoria disease rating of 6.7. It’s set to be a variety which many growers will consider for their autumn drilling and can also be successfully grown as a 1st or 2nd wheat.

Barley

As in previous years, Surge is looking like a strong variety, with its superior disease resistance and high grain quality shining through. The other 2 row variety to look out for is KWS Orwell, which offers similar yield and disease ratings to Surge, while also providing very stiff straw.

Oilseed Rape

Campus is leading the way as the best performing conventional variety, having been tried and tested in 2016 and leading the non-hybrids.

CEREAL SEED

For those looking for a hybrid option, Architect is a top variety. It offers a strong agronomic package and is the first high yielding hybrid with the added bonus of turnip yellow virus resistance, meaning it can remove the hassle of growers having to make additional spray for aphids in the autumn.

GRASS SEED Quality grass seed mixtures

Increasing the productivity of your grassland in terms of both yield and quality is crucial for maximising animal performance. With this in mind, many producers make the decision to reseed existing underperforming leys – hoping to see a significant return on investment. The main benefits of reseeding include:

• Improved yields • Higher DM intakes • Enhanced disease resistance • Earlier turnout of stock and increased stocking rates • Increased palatability and digestibility • Improved silage quality • Higher response to Nitrogen (N) fertiliser With the cost of reseeding at an average of £200 – 250/ acre depending on total inputs, producers may find making the decision of whether to reseed or not a tough one. However, once the decision to go ahead has been made, the next few steps in the process can be key to maximising the return on this investment.

Hidden Losses from Low Quality Mixes

It is true that reseeding an old ley with a new mixture will increase both the productivity and the quality of grassland forage. This is due to older leys containing a higher percentage of poor quality ‘weed grasses’ which ingress into a sward over time.

GRASS SEED

Although all grass seed mixtures are considered as ‘new grass leys’, there can be considerable differences in the quality of mixture ranges available in the market. This depends heavily on the species used and which varieties are then selected. At Wynnstay, we take this approach one step further and ensure that our mixture range consists of the highest quality ryegrass varieties available. The varieties which are included in our mixtures are all selected from the Recommended Grass and Clover List for England and Wales – which uses an independent and standardised testing system to compare performance. Our independence, means that we are able to carefully study the trials information provided to ensure that our mixtures consist of varieties with top yield, nutritional and agronomic characteristics.

HARVEST Clingseal – cutting your losses

Typically, forage consists of anything between 40 and 80% of the diet in most dairy and beef production (intensive beef finishing aside).

Feed as a whole represents the largest single cost in such systems, making it very clear that addressing the cost of forage while also maximising its quality, is an absolute priority. IBERS (Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences in the UK) cite average dry matter losses of 25% under commercial silage making conditions, with in silo losses of 5-18% typical. Highlighting the importance of ensuring steps are taken to minimise these losses during the harvesting and clamping process. Which is exactly why farmers and industry experts use Clingseal - a flexible silage sheet that is used directly beneath traditional, heavier silage sheets such as Visqueen Agri-S. Clingseal is thinner and therefore more flexible than standard silage sheets.

A quick calculation really focuses the mind on the real value the sheet can offer:

This allows it to “cling” more closely to the contours of the clamp surface and “tuck-in” more at the sides. As such it helps eliminate air pockets and provides a close fitting air barrier to significantly reduce top and shoulder losses from aerobic spoilage.

1m3 of maize silage equates to approx 800kg of material. So if maize is valued at £40/tonne, then 1m3 is worth £32. A 10cm deep layer is therefore worth £3.20 and a 1cm deep layer worth 32p. SSo this is a film that costs approximately half the value of a 0.5cm layer of maize silage over the surface of the clamp.’

Additionally, because it provides a better air seal, it also facilitates a faster, more efficient fermentation process - delivering enhanced clamp silage quality.

Factor in shoulder spoilage, more rapid and efficient fermentation and better quality silage, then it’s a proverbial ‘no-brainer’.

Clingseal is easy to apply and suitable for a variety of ensiled crops, including grass. Shoulder and surface spoilage reduction is particularly noticeable with maize, wholecrop, and other ‘moist’ feeds

NEW Animax Universal Sheep & Lamb Applicator One to be won in every Wynnstay store!

Animax are known for their quality and innovation. They have just developed a new and innovative applicator, which is suitable for use with ALL of the Animax Tracesure® sheep and lamb boluses and capsules. The new applicator has been designed, extensively tested and hand made from durable, high quality, stainless steel at Animax’s factory in Suffolk. It has an easygrip plastic handle and is efficient, labour saving and safe to use. It features two interchangeable nozzles, one for sheep and the other for lambs. The nozzles are very easy to change, they simply screw on and off. Inside each nozzle is a special gripper which holds the bolus or capsule, regardless of its size. Two spare grippers are supplied with each applicator. We are delighted to give you the chance to WIN a FREE Animax Universal Sheep & Lamb Applicator. There is one applicator, worth £42.20, to be won from every Wynnstay store. Simply answer the simple questions in the reply section opposite, then drop your reply section into any Wynnstay branch or go online to www.wynnstayagriculture.co.uk. The closing date is Saturday 30th September 2017 and the Free Prize Draw will take place on Monday 2nd October. See opposite for Terms and Conditions. “The applicator was really easy to use and also comfortable to hold, which is important when you’ve a lot of animals to do. I’ve used it on my sheep and on my lambs and it does the job. It’s no bother switching the nozzles over, they just screw on and off. It’s great to have one applicator that will do everything, rather than a separate applicator for every different product. I’ll be able to save a lot of money now that I don’t need to have lots of different applicators.” George Savidge, Gloucestershire

Bolus your sheep and lambs with Animax Tracesure® leaching boluses for • Optimum health, vitality, fertility and growth • Greater utilisation of forage • Cut concentrate use and reduce production costs • Trace element status, and associated benefits, passed from mother to offspring • The optimal size/density of the boluses resists premature regurgitation

“Lambs get up and suck. They are more vigorous when they are born. We have fitter lambs when we turn them out and more vigorous lambs on the ground. Management is easy with the bolus. We bolus at scanning, we find it gives the best results. Bolusing is an easy job and the applicator easy to use. Once the ewes are in the field we don’t give them any extra buckets. Tracesure® boluses work excellently.”

“Before I started using Tracesure® I was getting about 50 barren ewes out of 1,000 ewes. We use the boluses twice a year, before tupping and again before lambing. They really do the job. I hardly had any trouble lambing last year. We’re down to half a dozen barren ewes now and the conception rates have improved a lot.” Arwyn Evans, Conwy

ANIMAL HEALTH Make the most of your sheep wormers

Sheep wormers are a vital part of any gastro-intestinal worm control programme in order to help protect flock health and welfare. There has been a lot of talk about resistance to anthelmintics over the last 10-15 years so, if this is the case, why have we not seen more sheep farms being unable to farm sheep? This is because resistance doesn’t always mean the product will completely fail. Rather, it means there is a reduction in the percentage of worms killed by a particular wormer which increases over time. This affects productivity and often the effects can be hard to see unless you are monitoring growth rates or other production measures. Even low levels of resistance can leave enough worms behind to affect growth rates. Indeed, when the number of resistant worms is more than 10%, we start to gradually lose lamb performance because the product is not performing at its optimum level.1 This is the reason why we need to act now and put a sustainable worm control programme in place. Resistance to the three older wormer classes – white (benzimidazoles or 1-BZ), yellow (levamisoles or 2-LM) and clear (macrocyclic lactones or 3-ML) wormers – is increasingly common on many sheep farms. Research from Wales Against Anthelmintic Resistance Development (WAARD) showed resistance to all three of these older wormer classes: 94% resistance to white wormers; 68% resistance to yellow wormers: 51% resistance to ivermectin and 19% resistance to moxidectin.2 Using a post-drench efficacy test to test the effectiveness of the wormer used is important to understand the effectiveness of any wormer treatment given. Wormers are an investment in your flock so this is a way to making sure you are getting the most for your money by understanding what product you should be using. If the wormer is working less than 90% there are several reasons why this may be the case – one might be resistance but it could also be a faulty gun or the dose was wrong. Integrating the newer generation wormer classes early, such as Zolvix® the 4-AD (monepantel) group, will ensure you are using an effective wormer because there is no reported resistance in the UK and it may also help to slow down resistance development, thereby prolonging the efficacy of the older classes but it has to be incorporated early and appropriately.3

To protect against anthelmintic resistance development, consider the following advice: 1)

3)

Avoid under-dosing: if an animal is under-dosed, it allows more worms, both resistant and partially resistant worms, to survive. Under-dosing can occur because the weight of the sheep is under-estimated, the applicator is not calibrated correctly, or the dose is not administered correctly.

Avoid worming in times of low refugia: for example, try and avoid dosing and moving by either leaving 10% of the animals untreated or delay the move for a few days after treatment.

4)

Always adopt a farm protection quarantine treatment: animals coming on to farm either as new stock or returning stock, should always be subject to a farm protection quarantine treatment to ensure resistant worms or other parasites are not being inadvertently transported on to a farm. Always yard or house all stock for 24-48 hours before turning out on to dirty pasture.

ANIMAL HEALTH

2)

Avoid over use: every time a wormer is used, that class of wormer is being selected for resistance. Reducing the unnecessary use of anthelmintics is important as well as ensuring the right product is being used every time is important. Routine faecal egg counts are one method to help determine the need for wormers. And determining your resistance status will help you choose the right products for your farm.

Mycotoxin Binder

Milan University trial work

Can you identify with any of these problems?

Easy to feed - 50g/head/day Biobind is a combination of six different raw materials to ‘mop up’ the main mycotoxins found in feeding stuffs, especially forages and cereals. Mycotoxins that are targeted by Biobind include Fumosinin B1, Zearalenone, Aflatoxin, Vomitoxin and Ochratoxin making the product broad spectrum.

Mycotoxins can cause: • Oestrogenic

• Swollen hocks

• Poor growth

• Poor condition

Feed Rate: incorporate into TMR at 50g per head per day.

• Bulling activity • Milk loss
