ROOT SEED
Case Study:
Mark & Jen Hansford, South Farm, Sherborne, Dorset We out winter the majority of our Angus beef herd on stubble turnips over a total of 33 acres, so we need a high yielding easy to grow variety that helps to keep cattle growing through the winter months. For many years, we have used the same variety. However, after browsing the Wynnstay catalogue for 2016, we decided to try Vollenda as it sounded like it could be an improvement. Clive Bethell gave us some advice on how to achieve
the best from them and we have certainly not been disappointed. The seed was rapidly germinating within days of sowing and required no treatment or special care - we just left them to it! The turnips have stood up well to all weathers and the cattle have found them very palatable. The quality of the turnip and its greenery is far superior to the previous variety we used. We are very pleased and will definitely be using them again this year after such success!

SEPTORIA TRITICI Importance of varietal disease resistance
2017 is certainly a big year for plant breeders, with 11 new winter wheat varieties gaining recommendation onto to the AHDB Recommended List. Whilst this makes for a potentially confusing list of wheat varieties to choose from, it demonstrates a very strong and important development from the breeding industry. Through innovative techniques, such as genetic marker assisted selections, wheat varieties are being introduced with not only the prerequisite of higher yield, but with more desirable traits to improve agronomics, such as superior septoria tritici resistance. Improved septoria resistance will, for some, be seen as an opportunity to reduce costs slightly, but more importantly it offers more flexibility in disease management, and puts less yield at risk in years when disease pressures are high.
Varietal resistance In an acknowledgement of the importance of varietal disease resistance the current AHDB Recommended List shows septoria resistance displayed to one decimal place. This allows for greater scrutiny in selecting varieties and is a very positive improvement, rather than rounding up or down to group varieties that could be more than 0.8 different in resistance rating. No other disease receives quite the same attention on the List.

SEPTORIA
The table below shows the % of yield that is at risk of being lost in varieties with high and low septoria resistance. Whilst all varieties should be grown to achieve optimum yield, varieties with a superior genetic resistance stand to lose less of their yield potential in years of high disease infection. With fungicide strategies becoming more restricted, improved varietal resistance will become increasingly important.

*with the purchase of any silage sheet
Sits beneath the traditional black silage sheet and “clings” to the clamp surface It reduces air pockets which significantly reduce aerobic spoilage Suitable for a variety of crops; including grass, maize, whole crop silage and crimped grain 100% recyclable and is the only silage sheeting range manufactured in the UK
Secure Covers Why use Secure Covers?
HARVEST
• Knitted NOT woven; meaning the tough interlocking textile will not fray or ladder • The knitted material is more flexible meaning it can follow the contours of silage better than a more rigid woven material - this reduces the risk of wind lifting the sheet which would result in aerobic spoilage

ANIMAL HEALTH Map highlights real-time parasite risks in local areas With warmer weather enabling a longer grazing season and milder winters leading to more parasite survival, farmers need to have some degree of knowledge about parasites on their farm and in their area. As well as monitoring parasite risks by using the Parasite Watch map, farmers should also be using faecal egg counts and monitoring growth rates. Farmers will be able to get up to date parasite information in their local area thanks to the monitoring of worm, fluke and fly levels on 18 farms across the UK.
ANIMAL HEALTH
The Parasite Watch scheme run by Zoetis, is now in its second year. The 18 farms involved in the scheme will have faecal samples taken every two weeks, which will help detect major stomach worms and Nematodirus. Fluke will also be tested quarterly using copro-antigen testing, which will pick up immature fluke at six weeks of age, giving farmers the most advance warning they can. Flies will be monitored on the farm using fly traps.
How to use Parasite Watch The aim of Parasite Watch is to not only inform the farmers involved in the project about parasite levels on their farm, but to alert livestock farmers to parasite risks in their local area by an interactive map, which can be found at www.parasitewatch.co.uk Parasite data on the interactive map from each of the farms will be updated regularly. This will allow farmers to see if there are spikes in certain parasites in their area and enable them to take appropriate action. The results and stories from these farms will also be shared on Facebook (SheepFarmersUK) and Twitter (@Sheep_ farmers), so make sure you follow us to stay up to date. All prices exclude VAT 10

ANIMAL HEALTH Optimise trace element status to reduce lamb finishing period
Supporting levels of key trace elements post-weaning is enabling lamb producers to maintain desired growth rates and cut finishing times. Trace elements can help to maintain daily liveweight gain targets in finishing lambs while optimising vitality and performance. Maldwyn Davies, of Animax Ltd, the company which manufactures the range of Tracesure lamb finisher boluses, says the availability of copper, selenium, iodine and cobalt is very important to the finishing process. “Farmers can make the most of those early premium prices by finishing lambs early and reducing costs,’’ he explains. For Clifford Ferry, a sheep farmer from Dungannon, Northern Ireland, who operates a grass-only system and normally sells his lambs as stores, the Tracesure Lamb Finisher boluses resulted in heavier and better quality lambs than he would usually produce. It is common for problems to occur in the post-weaning period when trace element levels diminish. This applies particularly to cobalt and selenium and sometimes to copper, depending on individual circumstances. This also impacts on energy and growth and can leave lambs susceptible to anaemia, pine and white muscle disease. Concentrates with or without added trace elements can be used, Maldwyn Davies explains. “Trace elements as drenches are used for pre-weaning lambs but they can be costly. They generally only last for a short time so frequent drenching may be needed.’’ Animax’s unique leaching bolus technology allows a steady and consistent release of trace elements, therefore less concentrates may be needed for finishing. Suckling lambs can receive trace elements from their mother’s milk, especially if the ewe has been bolused prelambing with a Tracesure leaching bolus, which is available for both sheep and lambs.
ANIMAL HEALTH
Tracesure lamb boluses are available with copper as Tracesure Lamb Traffic Lights and without copper as Tracesure Lamb Finisher. They are designed to last for approximately four months to cover the finishing period and can be given easily with an Animax applicator.

ANIMAL HEATH Early blowfly prevention is essential for peace of mind Blowfly is the main external parasite traditionally affecting sheep in the late spring and summer months. Changing weather patterns have resulted in an increasingly unpredictable and lengthening season: it is now not uncommon to hear of strike as early as February and as late as November.1 If untreated, strike can get out of control very quickly and can kill or adversely affect the welfare of infested sheep. In conducive conditions – warm, wet weather – blowfly eggs can hatch within 12 hours and larvae can develop into fully grown maggots within days.
ANIMAL HEALTH
Blowfly strike is not only a major welfare issue for sheep. Treatment – involving catching sheep and applying treatments – takes time and effort and is a stressful, unpleasant task that all farmers would rather avoid
Use a preventative product such as CLiK®, CLiKZiN® or new CLiK® EXTRA for full fleece protection* and peace of mind from the worry of blowfly strike. CLiK, CLiKZiN and CLiK EXTRA are insect growth regulators and work by stopping larvae from developing into the harmful second and third stage maggots which are responsible for fly strike. CLiK® EXTRA launched in March 2017 and has the longest protection2 on the market at 19 weeks. *Spreads to areas covered by fleece, other areas may not be protected, including the feet. 1. Elanco survey via NSA of 130 sheep farmers, April 2016. 2. See CLiK® EXTRA SPC.
CLiK® EXTRA contains 65mg/ ml dicyclanil. CLiK® contains 50mg/ml dicyclanil. CLiKZiN® contains 12.5mg/ml dicyclanil. Legal category: POM-VPS UK.
