ANIMAL HEALTH CATTLE The economic impact of liver fluke infection can be detrimental to production; even modest parasite burdens can result in significant reductions in expected cattle performance. Liver fluke infection in growing cattle has been shown to depress liveweight gain by up to 1.2kg/week depending on the size of the fluke burden2.
A comprehensive dosing regimen at housing is critical to remove worm and fluke infections, ensuring freedom from disease and maximum productivity of animals throughout the winter housing period. In addition, lice and mite burdens are removed, preventing rapid spread to others during close contact when housed.
Ectoparasites can also have an extremely negative impact, leading to irritation through their feeding and movements. The itching causes a reduction in appetite, but in addition, biting lice (Bovicola bovis) are responsible for “light spot and fleck� which incurs large costs to the leather industry. Closamectin Pour on is a unique combination of Ivermectin, a broad spectrum macrocyclic lactone, and closantel, an early-acting flukicide effective against late immature fluke of seven weeks old and above. It offers treatment against fluke, gutworms, lungworms and external parasites of cattle in a single easy to administer pour on application, offering an efficient way of controlling parasites which can have a severe economic effect on cattle during the winter housing period. Additionally, Closamectin Pour- On only has a 28 day meat withhold. 2015/16 was a high risk year for liver fluke which led to high pasture contamination this spring/summer in western regions. Consequently, 2016/17 is likely to present a high liver fluke disease risk in these same areas of the UK. This August the weather was rather unsettled and the south experienced a large amount of wet weather. If wet conditions prevail past September this will result in a 'high risk' of liver fluke disease in western regions of Scotland, Wales, and northwest England. Recent surveys and field data revealed that the majority of farmers do not know which is the best fluke treatment to use against specific stages of the developing parasite1, which is important to avoid unnecessary use of some actives which can ultimately lead to drug resistance. The choice of treatment in cattle this year will be influenced by many factors including risk of infection; meat/milk withdrawal periods; risks posed by other parasites; and the ease of administration.
Closantel is effective against fluke which are resistant to triclabendazole, which is important in light of emerging resistance problems. Where triclabendazole resistance is suspected, it is recommended that strategic anthelmintic treatments should rely on the use of alternative active ingredients including closantel.

ANIMAL HEALTH SHEEP SCAB WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Sheep scab is caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis, a nonburrowing, surface-feeding mite, costing the UK sheep industry annually around £8.3 million, including £0.8 million in reduced animal performance1.

The severity of the disease is influenced by the stage of infection, the strain of P. ovis involved, the time of year, fleece length, sheep age, sheep breed and the individual host’s immune response. Sheep scab is characterised by intense itchiness caused by the mite faeces. Clinical signs are generally more severe in lambs and yearling sheep than in ewes. Sheep scab can be introduced to a flock by carrier sheep, including purchased animals, sheep returning from grazing and strays, or by exposure to mites in the environment, including contaminated fields, handling facilities, shared equipment, sheep transport and clothing.

Most sheep scab outbreaks occur during winter and spring months, in young and growing lambs, P. ovis infestation can result in rapid weight loss, debilitation and death. Low birthweights and high mortality rates in lambs born to ewes with severe sheep scab during pregnancy probably resulting from an excessive loss of body condition in the ewes.

KEY FACTS • Scab mites can survive for 17 days off the host in wool tags, on equipment or even under finger nails – this is why you need to move sheep to clean pasture with some treatments (pasture that has not had sheep on it for at least 3 weeks) • Scab mites do not feed every day so injectables may take time to kill the mites • Until the mite faeces is washed off the sheep, they may remain itchy • ML (Group 3 – clear) injectables are also wormers so ensure their use is necessary at this time of year and avoid repeat doses

QLF LIQUID FEEDS - A KEY INGREDIENT FOR THIS WINTER’S DIETS... Balancing forages could be a challenge this winter; grass silages appear to be variable in quality as usual and a number are coming back slightly higher in fibre than last year, though there looks like good quantities in the clamps. Maize crops have harvested well and potentially higher proportions of maize silage will be fed, along with whole crop cereals. The resulting diets will have a high ratio of starch to sugar that may impede milk yield if not addressed and there will be an increased requirement for supplementary protein.
