INTRODUCING SILAGE ADDITIVES A complete range of silage additives for all forage systems. SILAGE ADDITIVES
Although the silage making process can be explained very simply, it is actually a very complex process and dependant on many factors, such as the natural microbial population, harvesting conditions and the sugar content of the grass. Consequently, silage quality can be very variable. However, the fermentation process, which coverts sugar into the lactic acid that preserves the forage, can be effectively controlled by using an appropriate additive.
Benefits of using a silage additive: • Ensures fast and efficient fermentation • Improves aerobic stability • Reduces aerobic spoilage • Maintains nutrient levels • Improves animal performance by ensuring quality silage less nutrients are lost during the process and consequently the silage has a higher feed value when compared to untreated forages. Also, by improving the fermentation and rapidly reaching a stable pH the risk of secondary fermentation from clostridial bacteria is minimised. Furthermore, the activity of yeasts and moulds which cause expensive losses due to aerobic spoilage is reduced.
Several trials over a range of crops and ensiling conditions have shown that using Wynnstay’s range of silage additives improves both speed and efficiency. By speeding up the fermentation
The net result at feed-out should be a wellfermented, well-preserved silage which improves animal performance, which in turn can reduce the cost of production and improve margins. Further financial benefits are gained from reducing waste due to the activities of spoilage organisms. However, keep in mind that an additive cannot turn poor quality grass into good silage and that it is no substitute for good management.

SILAGE BALE WRAP
CROP PACKAGING
To produce high quality baled silage, grass needs to be tightly sealed with a reputable silage stretchfilm and to remain securely sealed throughout the ensiling period. Air ingress must be minimised during wrapping and to achieve this, bales should be of a high density in order to minimise the areas available for oxygen ingress. Another important factor for baled silage is the optimisation of dry matter (DM) content. The drier the forage, the more difficult it is to produce a firm, dense bale without air pockets. Excess air in the bale will result in minimal fermentation and an increased risk of moulds forming. On the other hand, too much moisture will result in heavy bales, more effluent (liquid waste from fermentation) and increased spoilage. Wynnstay supply a complete range of consistent, quality balewraps that can help you produce great quality silage.
NEW
Our silage stretchfilms offer a host of features and benefits including: • High puncture and tear resistance • Greater resistance to oxygen ingress • Excellent adhesion • Strength and flexibility • UV Protection • 100% recyclability Forage Guide

SHOULD I USE 4 OR 6 LAYERS OF WRAP?
CROP PACKAGING
You should uniformly apply no less than four layers of film. It is essential that at least four layers of conventional balewrap are applied to protect the crop. Whilst many farmers still apply only 4 layers to silage bales, many more have discovered the benefits of a 6 layer application and have realised that applying any less is a false economy. In fact, the majority of countries now apply at least 6 layers of film as standard practice. The result is consistently higher quality silage and little or no waste. In addition, bales with 6 layers applied can withstand handling better. Importantly, a minimum of six layers must be applied to all bales with DM of 50% or over, bales containing coarse crops and all
square bales. Using 6 layers of stretchfilm could potentially save you money long term. With more layers of wrap, less air should be able to enter the bale, decreasing spoilage, losses and risk of moulds. A research project at IGER Aberystwyth shows that a silage at 22% dry matter released 28L/t of effluent when it had four layers of wrap and 11L with six layers. Commercially funded research at CEDAR, University of Reading, reported that with four layers of wrap wastage was almost 9% compared with 1% in those with six or more layers. More layers also maintained higher energy content and dry matter value. Our most popular wrap continues to be the standard 750mm wide x 1500m long. However we have a wide array of products available.
NET REPLACEMENT FILM (NRF) Using plastic film instead of net to hold a bale together is the latest significant development in the production of baled silage. NRF works on suitably engineered combination baler/wrapper units Advantages of NRF Silage Quality: NRF adds extra film to the barrel of the bale. The Oxygen barrier is improved. This leads to better quality silage. Reduces mould: Extra film on the barrel of the bale reduces vermin and handler damage. Labour Saving: No need to separate net and film when opening bales. This reduces feeding time, makes waste disposal easier and reduces costs. Better shaped bale: NRF compresses the bale tighter than net. This keeps the bale in better shape.
