It’s a Dog’s Dinner! Keeping your dog healthy this Christmas. Although this advice may lack Christmas cheer, it is important that all dog owners are aware of the dangers of giving their canine friends human food at Christmas.

Christmas is a time for indulgence and many of us fill our cupboards and fridges up with delicious goodies for the whole family. Many foods that are a treat for us are deadly for dogs and it’s important that you know what’s not safe to feed your dog. •

Grapes are also toxic and should never be fed to dogs as they cause kidney failure.

Human chocolate. Be very careful with all chocolate treats as they can prove to be fatal when given to dogs. Make sure the whole family knows to keep chocolates well out of reach of your furry family members. Instead buy special treats for your dog such as Goodboy Chocolate Drops for dogs.

Purina ProPlan 14kg WAS £51.45-£54.25

Don’t feed your dogs mince pies. The mince pies contain foods that are toxic for dogs, such as raisins.

Dogs should never be given alcohol or foods with alcohol in it.

Chicken and turkey bones are not suitable to give to dogs. The bones are a choking risk and need to be kept out of reach.

Christmas plants that are toxic to dogs are: mistletoe, ferns, poinsettias and spider plants.

Treat your pet this Christmas... Save the Tree & Entertain the Cat! Live Christmas trees are actually mildly toxic to cats, so during the festive season it’s important to keep your cat entertained so they are not tempted to climb and play with your Christmas decorations. We would recommend getting your cat some new toys to play with, to help distract them. If you are a proud owner of an adventurous kitty then make sure the cat and tree are never left alone!

CAT TOYS & ACCESSORIES

Here are a few idea to entertain your kitty • Introduce plenty of toys. There are all sorts of toys available so try and rotate the toys so there is always something new to play with. • Activity centres provide your cat with lots of levels to play on. Cats enjoy getting into elevated positions whether to watch what’s happening or to settle down and relax on. • Give your cat your attention at least once a day. Try grooming one day and playing a game the next. • If you’re going to be out for long periods of time remember to leave on the TV or the radio for their entertainment. • Clear off areas of your shelves, on top of your wardrobes and the kitchen units just for your cat to use.

How should I feed the wild birds this Winter? November

Small Animal Home

Begin to feed high-energy foods such as black sunflower seeds and sunflower hearts. Try putting out some high fat treats such as suet blocks now, this will allow birds to begin to build up their fat reserves ready for the winter.

December Winter-feeding will really begin this month; try not to disturb birds first thing in the morning, as this is the peak time for feeding. Don’t forget the wild birds over Christmas, especially if you are going away. Make sure that feeders are topped up and that you provide plenty of good, quality foods through this important month.

Make sure that there is always plenty of fresh water available and that you clean out your feeders regularly. Feed high energy foods such as black sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, hi-energy seeds or high calorie treats such as fat balls or suet blocks containing peanuts or fruit. Peanuts can be high in a natural toxin, so only ever buy peanuts that contain, guaranteed, non-detectable amounts of aflatoxin.

February

£9.89

It remains important to feed high-energy foods with plenty of calories throughout February so your wild birds can build up the extra fat reserves to help them to survive the long cold nights. Keep feeding foods such as sunflower hearts and seeds and high-energy seed mixes as well as high calorie treats such as fat balls. Nyjer seeds are small, black seeds that have high oil content and are particular favourites with siskin or goldfinches. Check that your nest boxes are not damaged and that they are clear of foliage.

Small animal treats this Christmas... Rabbits don’t hibernate during the winter, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need help keeping warm. Wild rabbits have plenty of space to run around and stay active and as a result they are able to cope with the colder weather. Pet rabbits often don’t have as much freedom, limited to the space available in their hutches and runs only. As a result they need some help in fighting off the cold.

Feeding and Exercise

Check the Condition of the Hutch

Finally it’s important not to neglect the amount of exercise your rabbit is going to need. Decide on a suitable exercise location to use as an exercise spot in all weather conditions – a cool room in the home, a sheltered area of the garden or the garden shed. Take the rabbit out during the middle of the day if possible and allow it to have a good run. Be sure to use a rabbit run to prevent your rabbit from nibbling any wires or getting into mischief.

Make sure the rabbit hutch is in good condition. Repair any holes that let in draughts, fix the wiring on the doors to ensure there are no gaps or sharp wiring poking out that could injure your pet. The roof of the hutch should also be in good condition with a suitable covering that will protect your rabbit from the rain and the wind. Think about moving the hutch especially if its current location is out in the open. Find a sheltered spot that will stop the wind and the rain from blowing in through the wired openings.

Increase the amount of food you provide your rabbit during the colder months. The food will help them to keep a regular body temperature and help them to withstand the drop in temperature. Provide plenty of feed along with hay and some fresh food.

Insulate the Hutch

Small Animal Festive Tree Treat

£3.49

Stock up on straw and increase the amount you use as the temperatures drop outside. If you keep it dry and change it regularly it will provide the perfect insulation for your pet rabbit. Fill the nesting box out with plenty of straw but don’t neglect the rest of the hutch, you’ll need lots especially during the winter.

Animal Health Flea & Tick Treatments Even though the temperatures are dipping there is still the need to treat your pets for fleas and ticks. Fleas can survive in low temperatures and their eggs are often nestled away protected from any cold. Once the fleas are on your pet they get to enjoy the warmth of our houses. If you are unsure about flea treatments we have experts’ on hand to help, our VacciPet Clinics also offer flea & worm treatments to cats and dogs in store.

Wormers As long as your dog is cleaning it’s self and your cat is out hunting there will still be the need to treat them for worms. Keep up with worming every 3 months even in the colder months.

Calmers

Calmers are great for pets that find Christmas and all the comings and goings stressful.
