ARABLE

* Why take the risk? Blackgrass is becoming a serious problem for arable growers in the UK, with many struggling to control this weed once it is established. There are several ways that Blackgrass can be introduced on to the farm and certified seed is one such vehicle. At Wynnstay we ensure that this risk is minimised by only placing our seed production contracts on land that is free of Blackgrass, and monitoring these crops very carefully. Most UK seed suppliers bring cereal seed in from eastern and southern counties where Blackgrass is a widespread issue, and much of the populations are resistant to herbicides. Why take that risk?

The Blackgrass problem

UK farmers are becoming increasingly concerned about Blackgrass in cereal crops The threat of Blackgrass being introduced onto farms with bought-in seed in the western region is extremely concerning for growers

Wynnstay’s solution *A ll our seed contracts are grown on land in the western region that does not have Blackgrass issues S hould any plants appear in seed crops, they will be rogued out or the crop will be rejected

Bags of Confidence Hi-Gene seed is a name synonymous with seed of a high genetic potential, which is free from contamination. The superior criteria met by Hi-Gene seed shows our commitment to removing any potential problems for growers. This guarantee of purity is confirmed by reports from official seed testing stations – which frequently indicate that our seed is totally free from any impurity at all. The consistent high standards of our contracted seed crops, means that we have ‘bags of confidence’ in the quality of the product that we supply.

High varietal purity F reedom from varietal impurities is essential in avoiding unwanted rejections or claims Hi-Gene – guaranteed varietal purity of 99.9%

High species purity

ARABLE

We set our own standards (above HVS: 99.7%) to prevent contamination from non-cereal species Hi-Gene – guaranteed species purity of 99.9%

High germination

Hi-Gene – guaranteed minimum germination of 90.0%

URGE

Winter Feed Barley Surge has all of the characteristics needed in a first rate feed barley:

Surge is a new introduction from the Syngenta breeding programme, offering an alternative to the KWS-bred varieties, which currently dominate the winter barley market. Being from a different breeding programme, it has completely different genetics and brings significant improvements in disease ratings - whilst also achieving the best yields available in a 2-row feed variety.

Top Yield

Growth Habit Surge has a semi-erect growth habit in the autumn. It develops more slowly in the spring and has a medium ripening date, similar to KWS Cassia.

Long, stiff straw

Recommended sowing rate

Excellent disease resistance

Seed rates are dependent on soil conditions, rotation and time of drilling. The more difficult the environment, the higher the seed rate needs to be to compensate for potential plant loss.

Good grain quality Consistent on all soil types disease resistance

Suggested seed rates per square meter are shown below, (these should always be used in conjunction with the thousand grain weight). September 300 seeds/m2 October onwards 325-375 seeds/m2

HIGH YIELDER • QUALITY GRAIN & STRAW • TOP DISEASE PROFILE Surge is a high yielding 2-row winter feed barley newly added to the 2016/17 AHDB Recommended List. Surge performs well in the East and West regions, with good overall disease resistance and the highest untreated yield of all the 2-row feed varieties. Western Region

EARLY MAIZE VARIETIES FIT THE BILL With the focus firmly on reducing dairy costs of production and improving efficiency of feed use, early maize varieties such as the Limagrain variety Reason could play an increasingly significant role. In maize production, the growing crop is merely a means to the end. The end point is the silage produced and the key to getting the best return from maize is focussing on ensuring the clamp contains the highest proportion of the nutrients grown in the field. In diet formulation, quality is more important than quantity. Early varieties can score on all fronts. Firstly, they require fewer total heat units over the season to mature, meaning they are more likely to mature on time, often as much as 15 days or more, earlier than later maturing varieties. This increases the probability that they will be harvested at the optimum stage and in good conditions. Secondly, early varieties tend to have better early vigour which can be a real benefit in a late spring as we saw this year. With many crops drilled 2-4 weeks late, it was important the crop got away quickly. Reason certainly achieved this, displaying really strong early growth. Finally, early varieties often score better than later, heavier yielding varieties in terms of quality. Some have higher starch percent and higher relative starch yield, a small number offer superior cell wall digestibility resulting in a greater ME yield per hectare. All this means more milk from forage potential. To helper growers through the decision making process Limagrain introduced the Limagrain Animal Nutrition (LGAN) Accreditation scheme, which identifies varieties with the potential to deliver superior milk production. Potential varieties are assessed on agronomic features as well as cell wall digestibility, starch content, DM yield and total energy yield To achieve LGAN status the variety’s performance must be outstanding compared with average varieties that have been on the NIAB list at least four years. Accredited varieties will deliver higher yields of digestible energy leading to increased feed intakes and better production.

ARABLE

Reason is LGAN accredited and is predicted to be a first choice variety on the 2017 BSPB/NIAB list showing exceptional quality feed potential with excellent early vigour and rapid establishment, making it an excellent choice for an early maturing variety delivering good feed quality.

ANIMAL HEALTH REGULIN

A TOOL FOR MANAGEMENT OF THE SHEEP REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE Sheep are short day breeders, they need a period of long days and then as the day length shortens they start to return to reproductive activity and ewes show oestrus behaviour. They have evolved this way to result in lambs being born in the spring when the weather is warmer and the grass is growing therefore ensuring the best environment for lamb survival. There is some breed variation within this but in general with British sheep breeds in the UK there is a seasonal peak of reproductive activity in the Autumn. This complex mechanism is controlled by a hormone called melatonin secreted from the pineal gland of the brain. Melatonin is the chemical messenger which allows seasonally productive animals to perceive daylength changes. In sheep as daylight decreases there is an increase in release of melatonin which causes an increase in release of reproductive hormones from the brain which causes a cascade of hormonal responses that start in the brain down to the ovaries and therefore the reproductive cycle commences. L

L L

L

L L L

L L

LONG DAY

LONG DAY

Early lambing allows early and better markets for fat lambs, it allows pedigree lambs to have better growth before sale and can allow cull ewes to be weaned and sold earlier. Good management systems must be in place to utilise the early lambing.

Light L L

L

L

L

Melatonin

Regulin also improves fertility and prolificacy within the genetic predisposition of the ewe. Trial work has shown a decrease in barren ewes and an increase in number of lambs. It is important to note that the increase in lamb numbers is a result of decreased barren ewes and an increase in twinning rather than multiple births unless the ewe is genetically predisposed to large litter sizes. It is important to consider the other physiological factors affecting litter size, the two most important being body condition score at tupping and the nutritional management of the ewes around the time of mating (flush).

This natural control mechanism can make it difficult out of the breeding season to achieve good conception rates and lamb numbers. Other techniques can be used to breed out of season but ewes that do not hold to the induced oestrus are unlikely to return to natural cyclicity until her normal breeding season.

ANIMAL HEALTH

SHORT DAY

Regulin is a small (2mm x 4mm) implant that goes under the skin containing 18mg of melatonin which will bring on the onset of a full breeding season. The implant is placed behind the ear with one being used in ewes and 3 in rams. The location ensures that the melatonin is being absorbed near the location of natural production and also ensures there are no issues with residues should the animal need to be culled. Regulin releases melatonin so stimulating the reproductive system to cycle fully out of the natural breeding season. Regulin gives an advance in breeding season with good natural oestrus so ewes will return well.

The increase in production can be useful in traditionally less prolific breeds by increasing the number of lambs without losing carcass confirmation traits, hardiness, mothering ability and hefting. By increasing the number of lambs born, the number of replacements can be minimised this is can be an important tool in maintaining flock health status and good biosecurity. UK work showed an average increase of 19% in lamb numbers at scan (Scott et al 2009). All prices exclude VAT 8

Wynnstay Group Plc

AUTUMN Farm Focus 2016

Use of Regulin:

Regulin will also help in compacting the breeding season by ensuring as the tups are added the ewes are primed to respond to the ram effect (Williams et al 1992). Condensing the lambing period has many advantages. The main being a uniform crop of lambs at each life event like weaning, sales etc. This results in easier management and less disease risk.

Regulin should be implanted 40 days before tupping date. Implant one per ewe and 3 per tup. Separate ewes and rams - not just the next door field there needs to be no sight, sound or smell. This includes vasectomised rams (teaser tups). Other treatments can be done at the same time.

Regulin can be used with sponges to further compact the lambing period and also in artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) programmes. The dose of PMSG may need to be decreased if regulin and sponges are used. Regulin will improve fertility and also ensure that ewes that do not hold to AI or early natural service will return to a natural oestrus 17 days later and so have another opportunity to get in lamb.

After 40 days introduce tups for 40 days Regulin can be used in ewe lambs if they are sexually mature Regulin does not require significant increases in ram ratio. Regulin can advance the breeding season by up to 2 months. There is breed variation and care should be taken not to advance too much in the first year but use it over a planned programme.

Don’t forget the boys:

Benefits of using Regulin:

Regulin can also be used in rams, 3 implants per ram is recommended.

• One handling

Rams also suffer seasonal anoestrus with an accompanying decrease in libido and spermatic quality. Work done has shown an increase in the volume and density of semen samples (Arranz et al 1995) as well as Australian data that has shown an increase in scrotal circumference. Regulin will increase quantity and quality of semen as well as improving libido and activity of rams. This will have an impact on the number of rams needed and the timing of services.

• Improve fertility and fecundity

If the tups alone have regulin implants (3 per tup) there will be a 3 - 5% increase in lamb numbers, but it is best used across the flock.

• More lambs results in better returns.

• Advance breeding season by up to 2 months • Improve profitability • Compact the lambing season • Decrease barren ewes • Good return to natural cycle • Maximise genetic potential Please ask for professional advice before purchasing any animal health product. Wynnstay offer a comprehensive animal health advisory team of qualified personnel please contact your local Wynnstay store or Wynnstay representative.
