Trader’s Celebrates 44th Anniversary! It’s hard to believe that it’s been 44 years since the first issue of Trader’s Shopper’s Guide rolled off the press. Back in 1973, things were much different. Trader’s averaged only 4 pages and had a circulation of approximately 500 copies. Today, Trader’s has moved to the forefront of the market in southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Our most recent circulation audit indicates that over 19,000 copies are picked up every issue. Throughout the month of January, all of Trader’s display advertisers will be recognized with a special “Anniversary Symbol� identifying their number of years as Trader’s advertisers. This is just one of the many promotions Trader’s will use to celebrate 44 great years of serving our communities. Looking to the future, we are certain that Trader’s Shopper’s Guide will continue to grow and improve. East High Thunderbirds Sweep 4A State Drama for Second Year in a Row By: Kenna Smith, Features Reporter

This is it - the ďŹ nal moments of State Drama. “In third place‌ Campbell County!â€? The anticipation builds, and the students become still. Heads turn and minds race as who might be next. “Second place goes to‌ Cheyenne Central!â€? After a moment of congratulatory claps, scattered hushes come from all around the auditorium. Everyone holds their breath. “And in ďŹ rst place‌â€? Everyone leans forward, the collective question running through their minds - who had won? And then “Cheyenne East!â€? After a moment of pure shock, applause rains down from the auditorium, all for the team in blue. Starting in August, the Drama teams start preparations for the annual Wyoming State Drama Competition. Each student auditions to act for the team or researches styles and ideas for the technical events. Pouring hundreds of hours into as many as six events per team member, the students worry over every detail. This year’s event was held at the University of Wyoming. The technical events at state are make-up, lighting, scenic design, publicity, costume and original script. Each tech event has four levels of competition, with each level progressively becoming more difďŹ cult as you move up. Usually

these levels correspond with different grade levels, but that doesn’t stop some students. Sophomore Michael Norris placed 4th in fourth-year lighting design. Sophomore Maggie Perish, also competed above her grade level and took 15th in third-year fantasy makeup, while also earning an All-State in the event. All-State is awarded to competitors who, according to the judges, have the skills to display their designs at The International Thespian Festival which takes place in June. The ďŹ rst place arena, Elephant’s Graveyard, was a show inspired by the true events of Murderous Mary and directed by East’s Christina Zarr, received a perfect score. The judges offered scholarships to the seniors James Brown, Kristen Downs and Gage Nix. “I was kind of really excited, but I was kind of in a cocky ‘I told you so’ attitude,â€? said senior James Brown, “Because I said multiple times to the cast that the way we performed Elephant’s Graveyard and our energy was so much better than what we did with our last show Playboy of the Western World, and we took 4th.â€? East’s Group Performance Art, 35.8 Million, directed by East’s Jeff Miller, took second in its division. GPA is an event in which the team is given a social issue and tasked to write, direct, and present a show based around the issue. This year, EHS students wrote on the horrors of human trafďŹ cking. East High’s GPA performance is unique in that the students performing in the show wrote the script without any help from their adult advisors. This second place win was enough to boost East into ďŹ rst place in the 4A sweepstakes. Senior Mac Rogers took 1st with his dramatic monologue. James Brown, also a senior, took 3rd with a humorous monologue and received an All-State. Shelby Albright and Marcel Bohlmann, both juniors took 10th in humorous duets and also received All-States. “When I heard that Central got second I was like, ‘Does that mean that we got ďŹ rst?â€? said sophomore Kathryn Dobson. The theater classes are now heading into the spring show season with the IB and Theater 1 The East High Thunderbird State Drama Team brushes up on how to dominate a competition. The team won the Wyoming 4A State Drama Sweepstakes this past fall. This is classes scheduled for February 15-16, and the Theater 2 and 3 on April 27-28. East’s second title in as many years.

The Scottish Society of Southeast Wyoming will be hosting its 33rd annual Robert Burns Supper on Saturday, January 21, at the Cheyenne Country Club, 800 Stinner Road. Free tax preparation, for those who qualify and information about Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is available at Laramie County Community College, 1400 East College Drive, CCI Room 144, January 23-April 12, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:00pm-7:30pm and January 28-April 8, Saturdays, 9:00am-11:30am. Basic income tax preparation services and electronic ďŹ ling will be available through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. An Early Bird Drop-Off is also available. If all tax documents have been received early, they can be dropped off at 1007 East Lincolnway for tax preparation on Wednesday, January 18, between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. Finished returns will be reviewed with the tax payer on Friday, January 20, between 1:00pm-4:00pm.
