Booking information

Although many of the activities are free some will need to be booked in advance and some have a small charge. This information will be provided in the listing.

As Wyre Council is working in partnership with many organisations, you may be booking with one of these. Booking information for partner led events is shown in the listing.

No refunds will be offered if you are unable to attend.

You may be asked to share your contact information for emergency and operational reasons by each organisation when you book. They will provide their General Data Protection Regulation statement at the time of booking and on the registration form on the day of the activity. Find information about how we use your data at www.wyre.gov.uk/privacy

Preparing for your event or activity

It's always best to be prepared before you set out to an event or activity! Make sure that you have the full details of where you are going and information on your planned activity. Thoroughly read any customer information provided to you before you attend.

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to any guided walk or activity to register.

All finish times are approximate. Let the activity or walk leader know at the start if you need to return for a certain time.

If you have any health conditions, you should always check with your GP or health practitioner before you take part in our walks or activities. Make sure you bring any necessary or emergency medicine with you.

Always make the walk or activity leader aware if you have any relevant medical conditions before the activity begins.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, unless clearly stated as a drop off activity.

Dogs are allowed on short walks but must be kept under close control at all times and on a lead when requested by the leader. You must clean up after your dog. We can't allow dogs on all walks due to the nature of the terrain, stiles and the need to avoid disturbance of wildlife and farm livestock.

If you can no longer attend, please let the organiser know as soon as possible. Refunds will not be given.

Walking grades and terrain

To help you decide if a walk is suitable for you, we assign a grade to each one. The grade of the walk will indicate the level of difficulty and the expected terrain.

All – relatively flat, surfaced paths, no stiles, suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and Trampers. May include road crossings.

Easy – relatively level ground, fields, lanes and tracks, possibly with some gentle slopes, stiles and/or livestock.

small group sessions led by The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery are the perfect opportunity to get outside and experience all the benefits of the great outdoors.

Fun for the family

Almost all of the walks and activities you'll find in this programme are suitable for the whole family! Look out for our various children's crafts and arts activities throughout the year, or try your hand at Xplorer orienteering challenges at Wyre Estuary Country Park.

Conservation days

Whether you're passionate about biodiversity or want to make an impact on the climate change emergency, you can help make a difference by volunteering on our regular conservation days or our citizen science wildlife surveys.

Beach cleans

Come along to any of the regular beach cleans in Wyre to help us take care of our beautiful coastline and tackle the global litter problem. We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes early in order to register and get your equipment.

Moderate – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some moderate slopes, expect stiles and/or livestock.

Hard – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some steeper climbs, expect stiles and/or livestock.

Very Hard - limited paths, rough walking, steeper climbs, expect stiles and/or livestock.

Tramper - suitable for Trampers (booking is required for Trampers, see page 8 for details).

Gardening clubs

If you're interested in trying your hand at gardening, or already have a love for planting and pruning, come along to one of our friendly and welcoming gardening clubs. They're a great opportunity to meet new people, improve your wellbeing, and learn or share gardening tips.

Tips for a safe visit

Prepare for any weather

We all know British weather can be unpredictable - we can experience rain to sunshine and hail all in one day! Come prepared for all weather types, and wear suitable shoes and clothing.

Don't get cut off Mobile phones and devices don't always work in rural locations due to poor reception. Take a map or route plan with you in case you get lost and make sure you have the full details of your meeting point beforehand.

If you need help in an emergency... Dial 999 and ask for the relevant service – Police and then Coastguard if at sea or the seaside or Police and Mountain Rescue in rural and upland locations.

Proud of our parks, green open spaces, and expansive coastlines

Green Flag award winning parks at Memorial Park and The Mount in Fleetwood, Wyre Estuary Country Park and Hawthorne Park in Thornton and Vicarage Park in Poulton.

We are lucky to have so many natural spaces on our doorstep! From parks and playing fields to beaches and rolling hills, Wyre is filled with brilliantly beautiful outdoor places for you to explore and enjoy.

Don't just take our word for it - take a visit to Wyre's great outdoors and see for yourself!

Rural parks and peaceful picnic areas in Garstang and Over Wyre villages. Why not pack a picnic and enjoy an afternoon at your local park? Or take a trip to one you’ve never been to before!

Seaside Award winning beaches at Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Rossall. Enjoy the views over the coast by visiting Rossall Point Tower, a hub of coastal and environmental information.

A mythical coast full of surprises awaits. Search the sands for the mythical sea ogre or snap a photo of the iconic Mary's Shell. Fans will recognise Cleveleys coast as a galaxy far far away...

Respect, protect, enjoy!

The Countryside Code

With more people visiting the countryside than ever before, it's important that we all do our bit to look after our beautiful green spaces. We all have a responsibility to protect the countryside, now and for future generations!

Plan ahead, take a map, and remember that phone signals vary

Don't have BBQs or start fires in the countryside

Keep your dog on a lead (unless threatened by cattle)

Stick to the path and always leave gates as you found them

Get to know the signs and symbols used in the countryside, so you can find your way

Respect other users, local communities and wildlife

Leave no trace: take your litter and dog waste home.

Enjoy the seaside responsibly

The Seaside Code

The seaside is a great place to visit and enjoy, but it can be dangerous if you don’t take care while you’re there. Make sure to plan ahead and be prepared - check online for tide times before you go, and know who to call in an emergency.

Watch the tides, and keep checking so you don't get cut off when the tide comes in. Don't follow the tide out.

If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

If you are in difficulty in the water, remember - float to live

Leave things where you find them, to protect wildlife. Don't remove stones and shells!

Spare a thought for resting birds and keep your dog under control. Be aware of any restrictions in place, and clean up after your dog, too!

Mind your step and be aware of soft sand and mud. Sand dunes are a fragile habitat.

To read more about the Countryside Code, scan the QR code!

Ten days of walks for everyone to explore Garstang and its beautiful countryside

Wyre's leading walking festival is back for another year!

Celebrate the local landscape and wildlife during ten days of walks and activities in and around Garstang, Forest of Bowland and Wyre. As always, we've got an amazing programme of walks planned...

Look out for our Garstang Walking Festival brochure in January 2023!

Collect your copy from any Wyre Council building, your local library or visit our website. Bookings will be taken from February.

From all the usual favourites such as walks through Grizdale valley and treks up to Nicky Nook, to strolls along Wyre’s wonderful water ways like the Lancaster canal, rivers and coast, Garstang Walking Festival 2023 returns to celebrate the beauty of our local natural places. Join us as we wander from moorland to woodland, learning about local history, wildlife and much more!

Across the festival there are walks for all ages and abilities, from family friendly strolls in the countryside, to easy short walks along flat terrain and treks suitable for Trampers, to the ever popular Wyre Way 3 Day long distance walk. Please come and join us and discover the hidden gems of Wyre’s varied, wonderful and diverse landscape.

For full details and to book visit www.wyre.gov.uk/garstangwalkingfestival

If you require assistance, you can also email us at greatoutdoors@ wyre.gov.uk or call 01253 887502 and leave a message. We'll get back to you as soon as possible!
