Welcome to the 2019 Garstang Walking Festival, coordinated by the Friends of Garstang Walking Festival and supported by Wyre Council.
We have put together nine days of walks for all ages and abilities so that you can experience the best of springtime in the countryside around Garstang, the Forest of Bowland and the Fylde Plain. There are over 40 walks to choose from including a three day challenge, Nordic walking, one hour health walks, children’s activities, easy rambles, evening walks, dog friendly trails and everything in between. Booking is essential on all walks unless otherwise stated. Please note full details of meeting points and what to bring will be given at the time of booking.

Please note a ranger/leader will be at the start of an activity whatever the weather. In extreme conditions a decision will be taken on the day by the leader and the group whether or not to cancel.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of all walks to allow for registration, pu ing boots on, etc. The finish times of the walks are approximate as the duration may depend on the number of walkers, crossing stiles, etc. If you cannot a end a walk please let the leader or Visit Garstang staff know in good time so if there are reserves on the list they can be given the chance to a end the walk. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on guided walks unless stated in the walk description. This is because many of the walks cross farmland containing livestock or ground nesting birds. Dogs are allowed only on some of the health walks and legstretchers, but dogs must be kept under close control at all times
and on a lead on request by the leader, and you must clean up after them. Please check the suitability of the route for your dog before you a end. On some walks transport will be provided which is why the cost of these walks is higher. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear to cater for all weather conditions, including conditions underfoot and bring a drink (particularly on the longer walks). Please bring any medication you may need during the walk. For some walks there may be items such as binoculars, a camera, a drink, and a packed lunch etc. to bring with you. You will be given this information when you book, or if the walk is not bookable, details will be given in this brochure.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Health
Safety
If you have any medical conditions that the activity leader should know about, mention this at the start of the activity, and check with your GP or health practitioner before you take part. Our health walks are a good starting point for people recovering from ill health.
When a ending an activity please take the advice of the leader. We reserve the right to refuse to take people on activities if we feel they are unsuitably equipped for the activity. If you intend to leave the event early please inform your leader. For your own safety, come dressed to match the type of activity and weather with appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing.
Walking Grades To help you decide which is the walk for you, wherever possible on the walk listing an approximate time and terrain guide has been given:

Relatively flat, surfaced paths, no stiles, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, may include road crossings. Easy Relatively level ground, fields, lanes and tracks, possibly with some gentle slopes, stiles, livestock. Moderate Uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some moderate slopes, expect stiles/livestock. Hard Uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some steeper climbs, expect stiles/livestock. Very Hard Limited paths, rough walking, steep climbs, expect stiles/livestock. Tramper suitable Walk suitable for people using trampers.
HEALTH WALKS
These walks are suitable for all and are ideal for those looking to start walking to improve their health. There is no need to book unless you want a tramper which must be booked a minimum of 7 days in advance. Well behaved dogs are welcome on these walks but they must be under control at all times.
Trampers People of all abilities are welcome to explore Wyre’s Coast, countryside, parks and activities. The tramper is an all-terrain electric vehicle designed for people with differing abilities to access the countryside. Its capacity to deal with stones, mud, grass and rough ground is astonishing. You can hire one free of charge (donations welcome) for use on certain guided walks, health walks and tramper treks shown in the brochure as tramper suitable. A tramper must be booked one week in advance. First time users need to a end a short induction and should take along a passport photo and proof of identity to register. Please contact the Visit Garstang Centre on 01995 602125 if you wish to book a tramper.

Would you like to be a part of Garstang Walking Festival and its future success? Festival The festival was launched over a decade ago by Wyre Council to encourage people to visit Garstang, enjoy the lovely countryside and also use and support local businesses and organisations. The friends group was formed to support Wyre’s Countryside Ranger team, and now plays a co-ordinating role in delivering the festival.
The friends group is looking for people to help with various aspects of the festival such as becoming walk co-leaders or helping with booking administration. If you wish to help out and get involved please contact Les on 01995 672230 or email les.fragle@gmail.com and he will happily explain what the Friends are about. There is an initial ÂŁ5 joining fee to support the Friends.

Long distance Wyre Way three day challenge Saturday 4 to Monday 6 May
A series of three walks following the River Wyre from the sea to the Bowland Fells. These are strenuous walks for the seasoned walker and each walk is between 10 to 14 miles long*. A minibus/taxi will be provided to get you to the start for days 1 and 2. For all these walks you will need to bring all weather clothing, walking boots, packed lunch and a drink. * Day 1 is 13.5 miles, Day 2 is 10 miles, Day 3 is 10.5 miles

Saturday 4 May Springtime Wildlife around Garstang (G1) 8am – 10am Area: Garstang Grade: Moderate Length: 3-4 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk around Garstang and Barnacre in search of springtime wildlife.
Welcome to the Walking Festival

Wyre Way Challenge Day 1 (G2)
9am – 5pm Area: Wyre Grade: Hard Length: 13.5 miles Cost: £10 From St. Michael’s we take transport to Kno End. We follow the riverbank towards Out Rawcliffe then depart from the river and cross through farmland to St. Michael’s.
Nordic Walking Taster Session (G3)
2pm – 3pm Area: Garstang Grade: Easy Length: 1.5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A chance to try Nordic walking. It is a full body workout using Nordic poles and uses 90% of the body’s muscles and burns 46% more calories than walking without poles.
Garstang ‘Old and New’ (G4)
10:30am – 12:30pm Area: Garstang Grade: Easy Length: 4 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A legstretcher exploring the environs around Garstang that have made it great.
SUNDAY 5 May Late Spring Bird Watch (G5)
9am – 10am Where: Rossall Point Tower Grade: Easy Length: N/A Cost: Free Visit Rossall Point Tower to watch the spectacle of birds on the bay. No need to book. Bring: binoculars
Wyre Way Challenge Day 2 (G6)
9am – 3pm Area: Wyre Grade: Hard Length: 10 miles Cost: £10 From Dolphinholme we take transport to St. Michael’s. We follow the river and cross fields through to Churchtown, Garstang and Scorton to reach Dolphinholme.
Springtime wildlife around Nicky Nook – Dog Friendly Walk (G7)
10am – 12:30pm Area: Scorton Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk in search of springtime wildlife, bring your dog with you too.
Crossed Wyre (G8)
10:30am – 12:30pm Area: Garstang Grade: Easy* * Steps up from river to canal Length: Approx. 3 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A circular walk using footpaths, towpath and fields including a *flight of 39 steps from the river up to the Rennie aqueduct to look at transport connections across the Wyre.

Rivers, Churches and Meadows of the Fylde (G9)
10:30am – 3:30pm Area: St Michael’s Grade: Moderate Length: 7.5 miles Cost: £4.50 / £3.50 The walk starts in St. Michaels–on-Wyre, follows rarely used footpaths and passes through the picturesque village of Churchtown with its ‘Cathedral of the Fylde’.
Bluebell Walk (G10)
11am – 12pm Where: Calder Vale Village Green (Nr bridge, next to Mill), PR3 1SQ Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 2 miles Cost: Free A short walk through a beautiful bluebell wood, a short steep climb to St John's Church and then an easy country walk along farm tracks back to the Village Hall for afternoon tea (extra charge). No need to book. WC at start. Bring: drink, binoculars, camera and good walking shoes.
Monday 6 May Wyre Way Challenge Day 3 (G11)
9am – 3pm Area: Abbeystead Grade: Hard Length: Approx. 10.5 miles Cost: £4.50 From Abbeystead we take transport to Dolphinholme. We follow the river into Abbeystead, then to Tarnbrook, over the Forest of Bowland moorland to Marshaw, returning to Abbeystead.
Glasson Dock & Cockersands Abbey (G12) 9:30am – 1pm Area: Glasson Dock Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 6.5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A circular walk to the coast via the canal, lanes and fields. Passing Cockersands Abbey along the Lancashire Coastal Path beside the Lune Estuary.

Canal and Country (G14)
10:30am – 1pm Area: Garstang Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 4.5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A circular walk following the Lancaster canal by way of the marinas, then across pastures to Kirkland and returning along the river Wyre.
Millennium Green Family Event (G15)
10:30am – 3:30pm Where: Garstang Millennium Green, Riverside, near rugby field. Grade: N/A Length: N/A Cost: Free A fun event for all the family! Short walks, quizzes and activities. Dogs welcome. No need to book, just drop in!
Tuesday 7 May Abbeystead Circular (G16)
10am – 3pm Area: Abbeystead Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 6 miles Cost: £4.50 / £3.50 A circular walk encompassing the River Wyre passing through woodland and pastures using footpaths that are seldom used taking in the Shepherds Church and returning via Lower Lee.
Nordic Walking – Novice Walk (G17)
10am – 12pm Area: Garstang Grade: Easy Length: 3-3.5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A 3-3.5 mile circular Nordic walk from Garstang. Open to all Nordic walkers but aimed at novice Nordic walkers. A chance to practice your technique on good paths. Poles can be provided.

Winmarleigh – the li le village with a big history (G19)
1pm – 4:30pm Area: Winmarleigh Grade: Easy Length: Approx. 2 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk including a visit to Winmarleigh Hall and St Luke’s Church to learn about their history. Refreshments (extra charge) will be available in the church.
Garstang Ramblers (G20)

Wednesday 8 May Wednesday is Bleasdale Day with most events being based around the Bleasdale Parish Hall. Come for the day and enjoy a variety of events. Refreshments served by festival volunteers will be available (extra charge) in the Parish Hall after each walk or activity and toilets are available.
Hidden Wildlife of Bleasdale (G21)
7am – 9am Area: Bleasdale Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 2-3 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk around the Bleasdale estate in search of upland farm wildlife.
Bleasdale Skyline (G22)
9am – 3-4pm Area: Bleasdale Grade: Very Hard Length: Approx. 12 miles Cost: £4.50 / £3.50 From the Parish Hall this walk ascends to Parlick, follows the skyline along the fells (with impressive views on a clear day) before gradually descending and returning to Bleasdale.
Bleasdale and Beyond (G23)
10am – 4pm Area: Bleasdale Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 10 miles Cost: £4.50 / £3.50 A circular walk from Bleasdale, encompassing farmlands, lanes and footpaths, taking in Beacon Fell, the Brock Valley, Cobble Hey and the Bleasdale Estate.
Navigation Day 1 - Basic Map Reading (G24)
10am – 4pm Area: Bleasdale Grade: Easy Length: 3 miles Cost: £5 or £10 for both days An introduction to the skills required to be able to navigate with a map and compass. A short walk using a map and compass will be undertaken to use the skills gained.

10:30am – 1pm Area: Bleasdale Grade: Easy Length: Approx. 3 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk encompassing St Eadmer’s Church, Bleasdale Bronze Age Circle and surrounding area exploring the lives of the people during the early twentieth century.
Thursday 9 May Abbeystead Wildlife Walk (G26)
11am – 1:30pm Area: Abbeystead Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 3-4 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk around Abbeystead looking at flora and fauna, on roads, farm tracks and through woodland.
Navigation Day 2 - Navigation with Map and Compass (G27)
10am – 4pm Area: Bleasdale Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 4 miles Cost: £10 for both days Further development of the skills needed to navigate with map and compass, plo ing a route and pu ing it all into practice. Note: this event is only available if you have completed Day 1.
Dunsop Valley Ramble and Tramper Trek (G28)

Sullom Evening Walk (G31)
6:45pm – 9:30pm Area: Calder Vale Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 4.25 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 Evening walk from Calder Vale to the trig point on Sullom, to which there is normally no public access. Hopefully there will be a spectacular sunset. Some steep ascents and descents.
Friday 10 May Wyresdale Ramble (G32)

Saturday 11 May Claughton Estate Walk (G39)
10am –12:30pm Area: Claughton Grade: Easy Length: Approx. 1-2 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 This is a special walk with the owners of the estate taking a look at its historical landscape including a visit to lovely bluebell woodland which is also a heronry. If you would like to join us on this walk don’t forget to bring your binoculars as the herons (if present) are perched at the very tops of the trees!
Rivers and Pastures (G40)
10am – 4:30pm approx. Area: Claughton Grade: Hard Length: 10 miles Cost: £4.50 / £3.50 The walk heads across the farmland south of Cobble Hey Farm to join the beautiful River Brock valley. Continuing along the river, upstream, the walk passes the sites of two former mills and the Brock Bo om picnic site and eventually leaves the Brock valley to return across the pasture lands of the Bleasdale Estate to Cobble Hey.

Lancaster Canal 200th Anniversary (G43) 1:30pm – 4:30pm Area: Garstang Grade: Moderate Length: 3-4 miles Cost: £3.50/£2.50 A walk to discover the history of the Lancaster Canal which is celebrating its 200th Anniversary.
Sunday 12 May Of Roman Legions and Pendle Witches (G44)
9:30am – 5pm Area: Dunsop Bridge Grade: Hard / Very Hard Length: 14 miles Cost: £4.50 / £3.50 The walk skirts to the East of the Bowland Fells before picking up the Roman road up to the head of Whitendale, then following the River Dunsop back to Dunsop Bridge.
Bluebell Walk (G45)
11am – 12pm Where: Calder Vale Village Green, PR3 15Q Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 2 miles Cost: Free A short walk through a beautiful Bluebell wood, a short steep climb to St John's Church and then an easy country walk along farm tracks back to the Village Hall for afternoon tea (extra charge). Poulton and Carleton Countryside Ramble (G46)
1:30pm – 4:30pm Area: Poulton Grade: Easy Length: Approx. 5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 From the quaint market town of Poulton-le-Fylde we use public footpaths to cross fields and a golf course to visit Li le Carleton and Great Carleton before arriving back at the start.
Of Fallen Airmen and Lancashire Gothic writing (G47)
2pm – 4pm Area: Langden Valley Grade: Moderate Length: Approx. 3.5 miles Cost: £3.50 / £2.50 A walk on along the floor of the Langden Valley, visiting memorials erected to the memory of airmen who lost their lives in crashes. We shall also explore the valley’s connection with Andrew Michael Hurley’s 2017 novel “Devil’s Day” which is set in the area.

DIRECTIONS TO GARSTANG By car From the north – exit M6 at junction 33 (Lancaster south). Follow signs for Garstang, taking the A6 south, for approx. 10 minutes. From the south – exit M6 at junction 32 (Preston). From the west – exit M55 at junction 1 (Preston). For either, follow signs for Garstang, taking the A6 north, for approx. 20 minutes.

From the east – take the A59 to junction 31 of the M6. Join the motorway and exit at junction 32, as per directions from the south. From the Fylde Coast take the A586 to Churchtown. Turn left onto the A6 north and follow the signs for Garstang, for approx. 5 minutes.
