JUNE I always seem to start by being amazed at how far the year has come on - and how quickly. Is it just me? We are halfway through the year already and heading for the longest day on the Summer Solstice on June 21. Then the nights will start ‘drawin’ in’. However, let us all enjoy it while we can. Lockdown and Covid restrictions are all but over so the world is waking up to more and more events, some of which you can find out about in the following pages. Hopefully the sun will smile on us and the temperature will rise to make the great outdoors even more ‘great’. Happy summer. Samhradh sona.

LETTER - FROM LOCHABER WITH MUSIC AND LOVE Lochaber Life rarely publishes letters from readers, but this one from Liz MacDonald of the Strathspey and Reel Society underlines the generosity of local people and confirms that efforts made here to help people in need does make a tremendous difference.
Dear Iain, Further to the photograph and caption in the Lochaber Times, the society held a meeting at which it was agreed that the money should go direct to help Ukrainian refugees rather than donate to a larger charity. In the week prior to our concert, my daughter Charlotte, who lives in Barcelona, took in a family of four Ukrainians who had fled Kherkiev to Poland. Charlotte’s husband Edu had a contact
6
through business in the USA; she is a Ukrainian dog groomer and requested Edu’s help to rescue her brother and family from Poland. So three generations of Ukrainian refugees made their way to Barcelona – a 65-year old man and wife, their daughter and an eight-year-old grand-daughter. They lived initially with Charlotte and Edu, but are now
in a three-bedroom apartment. Charlotte and Edu are paying the rent for the flat and giving them cash for shopping. Friends have been generous with clothes donations. The refugees are Russian speaking and have increased in number to six – again through business contacts. My son-in-law is in the family business of wholesale supplier of dog-grooming and hairdressing products. So it was agreed by the society £500 would be forwarded to Charlotte, which has been done. It has been gratefully received. It has been a whirlwind few weeks for us all and I am delighted a Lochaber lass has been able to offer hospitality and help to people devastated by the effects of the Russian invasion on their lives. Liz MacDonald, retired GP and accordionist, treasurer, Lochaber Strathspey and Reel Society.

PASS celebrates its 10th anniversary A service that helps people in Scotland raise complaints about the NHS has reached its tenth anniversary today. The Patients Advice and Support Service (PASS) has in that time helped over 30,000 people raise concerns about aspects of their treatment by the National Health Service in Scotland. PASS is funded by the Scottish Government but is run independently by Citizens Advice Scotland. It is accessible to anyone in Scotland, via any Scottish CAB, or at www.cas.org. uk/pass or 0800 917 2127. CAS Chief Executive Derek Mitchell said, “I’m very pleased today to mark the first decade of this terrific service. It is staffed by excellent advisers and has made a real difference to the lives of so many families by giving them
Lochaber
an impartial channel to express and resolve their complaints with the NHS. “We all love the NHS, and its mistakes are rare. But they do happen, and this statutory service was put in place to give information on patient rights and responsibilities, as well as providing independent and confidential support to those pursuing complaints. “That’s what PASS has provided for ten years – and will continue to provide. Last year alone they supported more people than ever, over 5,000 clients – a great achievement. “In addition to the day-to-day advice services delivered by the Scottish CAB network, we also run a number of projects which offer
more targeted advice to specific groups of the population. PASS is one of these, and one which I’m very proud of.” ABOUT PASS • PASS was introduced in April 2012. It became a statutory service later that year. • PASS is delivered by specialist advisers via the Scottish CAB network. • It provides information, advice and support to patients and their carers to give feedback or comments, or raise concerns or complaints, about healthcare provided by NHS Scotland. • PASS helps people understand their rights and responsibilities as a patient. It works with NHS Scotland to improve healthcare provision.

Community encouraged to take part in consultation for Culachy Wind Farm Hello, I am Rachel Baird and I am the project manager for Culachy Wind Farm. As you may be aware, Fred. Olsen Renewables is proposing to develop Culachy Wind Farm, south of Fort Augustus. Our proposals were recently on display at two events in April. The materials are online and I would like to encourage anyone that was unable to attend, to view the plans at www.culachywind.co.uk and let me know if they have any questions or comments. I would also like to invite them to: • Set up a discussion. To arrange just text or call 07435
763 900 • Submit questions and comments via communities@ fredolsen.co.uk • Request additional information via communities@ fredolsen.co.uk • Provide their feedback via communities@fredolsen.co.uk We are really pleased that local residents took the time to attend our exhibitions, view the initial proposals for Culachy Wind Farm and speak to the team. We hope to continue our discussions as plans progress and I hope that anyone with any questions will get in touch. Culachy Wind Farm will deliver a range of local
benefits, including employing local services during the construction and operation of the wind farm. The project will also provide over £300,000 per year to the local community. This is around £10m in community benefit throughout the lifespan of the project. We are very flexible in our approach to community benefit and hope develop a fund that can be administered, simply, locally. In addition, we hope to design a fund in partnership with the community that has the flexibility to support large scale local initiatives. Please visit culachywind.co.uk for further information.

Big Garden Birdwatch shows milder winter helps small garden birds
Iain Ferguson Every year I ask you to take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). I always take part but this year the wind and rain on January 30 were so bad there were no birds in my usually busy garden. However, in figures just published 2,959 people in the Highlands had more luck sending in their findings which contributed to the overall results submitted by 33,000 people across Scotland The event held over the last weekend in January revealed the house sparrow held on to its number one spot whilst there was an increase in garden sightings of long-tailed tits, and wrens, two of the smallest
16
species to visit our gardens. Reports of long-tailed tits in gardens in Scotland were up by 21 per cent and wrens up by 14 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019. The rise in the number of long-tailed tits boosted them into the top 10 for Scotland, being seen in 20 per cent of gardens. The milder weather we experienced at the start of the year appears to have helped populations of these species as small birds are more susceptible to spells of cold weather. Over its four decades, Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted who is thriving and who is struggling in the garden bird world. It was first to alert the RSPB to the decline in song thrush numbers. This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979. By 2009, its numbers were
less than half those recorded in 1979. It came in at 23 in the rankings this year, seen in just nine per cent of gardens across Scotland. Throughout the first half of the spring term, the nation’s school children took part in the RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch. The survey of birds in Scottish school grounds saw more than 6,000 school children and their teachers spend an hour in nature counting the birds. Blackbird was the most numerous species being seen at more than 80 per cent of schools, followed by starlings. The third most common was the carrion crow. For a full round-up of Big Garden Birdwatch results and to see which birds were visiting gardens in different parts of Scotland, visit www.rspb.org. uk/birdwatch

ST COLUMBA’S PUPILS CELEBRATE 1st COMMUNION Shona MacLean
Preparations for this special day began in January when six pupils from St Columba’s Primary School, Fort William, began weekly sessions in school. This year has even more significance with sessions being led by acting head teacher Shona MacLean using new resources being trialled by the Diocese and that, due to Covid-19, we have not been able to have First Communions since summer 2019. The communicants were supported in their preparations by school staff, their families and prayer partners as well as members of the local parish – Father David Connor, Deacon Thomas Wynne and Kevin Cameron, Director of Music at Carfin Grotto. The Parent Council also played an active role in arranging the First Communion breakfast in the Alexandra Hotel, decorating the room and arranging a piper to escort the children from St Mary’s over to the hotel. The cake was donated by the chairperson of the parent council, Claire McIntosh. Each week there was a particular theme
around developing the children’s knowledge and understanding of the messages in the Gospels, the significance of various parts of the Mass and the link between the school, the parish and home. The home sessions were positively received. The children have most enjoyed ending the home sessions with a hug and a snack. This reinforces the message that each child is loved and is provided for by their families and by God. On the day
of receiving this sacrament of initiation, the children receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. The Body of Christ is consecrated bread that is symbolic of the promises held between God and his people. The act of receiving communion is a significant milestone in the journey of faith our Communicants are undertaking. From now on, they are able to receive communion at any Mass they attend.

The Glencoe Boat Club Skiff On a fine April day, a crowd gathered at Glencoe Boat Club for the launching of a boat. Not just any boat, but a skiff hand-made from scratch especially for use by the club. Musicians played, beautiful cakes were laid out and Father Roddy Johnson delivered a traditional blessing just before the launch. The carnival atmosphere and importance of the day was further enhanced with the arrival of similar skiffs from Seil, Appin and Loch Awe to pay tribute to the new vessel ‘Corrag’ - named after a witch reputed to live in Glencoe and to welcome her to their number.
18
The event was the culmination of much work over many years, interrupted of course as many things were by the Covid pandemic. However, despite enforced delays the boat was completed demonstrating superb craftsmanship, with smooth and perfect lines. Builder David Southcott takes up the story: ‘In early 2018, a member of the Glencoe Boat Club committee had been away on the east coast and came back to tell us about the Scottish Coastal Rowing St Ayles skiffs that seemed to be sprouting up everywhere.
‘The committee thought it would be a great idea for the club and community to encourage people to get out on the water, and a volunteer - me - set about the build. To do it properly, we needed a new shed, so one was sourced and built quickly. By May 2018 the shed was complete and the skiff kit, comprising plywood sheets, was on site. Build frames were loaned to us by Morvern Sailing Club, which had just completed its skiff, and other timber was kindly donated by local forester Ian Shaw. ‘That summer was spent assembling the frames and getting all the wooden parts
| JUNE 2022
Lochaber Life June 2022.indd 18
09/05/2022 16:45:44
cut and prepared, but before the build proper could start, winter set in and the shed became too cold for the special epoxy glue to set properly. The project was therefore put on hold until spring 2019 when the planking of the skiff started in earnest. ‘Progress was swift during the summer and the hull was finished and turned right way up by August 2019. ‘The fit out was continued and by October the boat was largely complete. Oars, rudder and thwarts were made and fitted, but again, the cold winter weather was upon us
and painting was deferred until spring 2020. Then, as we all know, Covid took over our lives. ‘Not to put too fine a point on it, for the next two years there was little or no progress. People’s hearts were just not in it and social distancing rules largely precluded any activity in the shed. ‘However, in November 2021, we made the huge commitment that, come what may, we would complete and launch our skiff by April 2022. A date for the launch was set and with some hard work by volunteers, the enormous task of painting and final fit out was
completed with two weeks to spare. ‘The launch event on Saturday April 9 speaks for itself: a huge and enthusiastic audience of onlookers and participants, than three other visiting skiffs, live music, great food and good weather made for a fitting celebration for the arrival of what will be a huge new asset for the whole community. ‘I’m proud I played some small part in bringing this to fruition, but it would not have been possible without the huge input from other members and friends. Thank you everyone.

Jubilee Fun IN CAOL Karin MacKay Caol Locality Action Group, in partnership with the Highland Council, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Police Scotland, Highlife Highland, Caol Regeneration and Caol Community Council, has organised a Jubilee Engagement Event on Saturday June 4. The aim of the day, based at Caol Community Centre, is to bring local groups, services and people together for an informative fun day. Groups and organisations will be showcasing what services they have available and some free taster sessions from activity providers can also be enjoyed. For local produce or crafts, a visit to the outdoor market is a must. Meet with local fire and police who will be showing off their vehicles, find out what Highlife Highland offers or show off your baking skills with our Great Scottish Bake Off by bringing along your home made jubilee cake for a chance to win a great prize. Karin McKay Tenant, participation officer, and Jane Young, community support co-ordinator, will be engaging with residents regarding the locality plan activity and would like to hear your views. You can
22
also find out how you can get involved in your community. Recently formed Caol Resident Group and Lochyside Group will be attending on the day to showcase their plans and raise funds with excellent raffle prizes alongside a Highlife Highland’s tombola. There will be activities for all ages with fun inflatables, Segways, face painting, a shinty tournament for youth teams and beat the goalie. Children’s entertainer Maddie will be in the youth centre and youngsters are encouraged to come in fancy dress - princesses, super heroes, anything they want. Everyone who attends in fancy dress will receive a goody bag. For adults, Nevis Radio will be on air throughout the day with live music from local musicians and star guest Gary
Innes will be playing a few tunes. Outdoor entertainment will start at 1pm and an outside beer garden will be available to provide refreshments. Inside, there will be a taster session from local line dancers at 12.30pm, followed by Zumba. Linda Campbell and Jo Cowan have organised an afternoon ceilidh tea dance from 2pm to 4pm followed by a show from Highland dancers. A prizegiving will finish off the event at 4.30pm in the main hall, however, the community centre bar will remain open with music and food until late. You could end up staying! Everyone welcome. For more information contact Karin McKay on 07785 477696 or Jane Young 07501 891422.

Playlist for Life Carers Tea-Party in Kinlochleven Library Jo Cowan Carers Week 2022 runs from June 6 to June 12. High Life Highland’s Kinlochleven Library and Highland Senior Citizens Network are joining forces to host a special evening teaparty for carers on the Tuesday evening of the week. Both organisations act as help points for ‘Playlist for Life’ and are keen to share information with carers and families on how it works, the potential benefits for their loved ones and support to take it further. The Playlist for Life charity was founded by Sally Magnusson in 2013 to share the power of personalised playlists – all the tunes that are meaningful to an individual gathered together, on an mp3 player or other listening device, to create ‘the soundtrack to their life’. The charity’s vision is that every person with dementia should have access to a unique personalised playlist and everyone who loves and cares for them should know how to use it to make living with the condition easier and happier. Carers, unpaid or paid, and any interested family members are invited to join us for an informal chat and a cuppa in Kinlochleven Library between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday June 7. No need to book – just go along.
You can drop in at any time and stay for as short or as long as you want. Staff from Connecting Carers and Alzheimer Scotland will also be there to chat informally and provide information on the activities and support their organisations can offer. Useful contacts: Information on the event: Jo Cowan, 07933 653585, or Gayle MacCorquodale at Kinlochleven Library 01855 832047 or 07715 298209. In a dream, I went to heaven and saw a huge room full of very busy angels. ‘What’s going on here?’ asked Nosy Parker. ‘We don’t have time to chat,’ said the nearest angel glancing back over a shoulder. ‘There are a lot of worried people and many in danger on earth just now. We are passing on prayer requests as fast as we can.’ I quietly slipped away to a nearly empty room where a few angels were working. Timidly, this time I whispered: ‘What are
you doing?’ A beaming angel replied: ‘We are passing on all the grateful and thankful prayers from earth.’ There didn’t seem to be many. There are many sad events happening at home and abroad. What can I be thankful to God for in this midsummer month to keep those angels busier? I love the long bright evenings. Sometimes it can be dull or even wet during the day but the sun comes out to set in a blaze of colours. Perhaps I can think of something to be
thankful for each day? Can you be thankful too? Then we can say together with the Psalmist: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, proclaim his greatness; tell the nations what he has done. Sing praise to the Lord: tell of the wonderful things he has done. Be glad that we belong to him; let all who worship him rejoice.’ Ps105: 1-3. (GNB) And at long last we can do all this in church without a mask. Maybe just a little thing but I am so thankful for it. Happy Midsummer.

The award-winning Whitehouse Restaurant in Lochaber is re-opening under new ownership The Whitehouse Restaurant in Lochaline has recently been sold to new owners Chris and Agi Stanley Fotos. The couple are new to Lochaber but not to the Highlands as they have lived in Port Appin for several years before moving to the south of the country in pursuit of career development. Now they are glad to be back in friendly Lochaline and away from the hustle and bustle of the Central Belt. Chris and Agi have worked in some of the most well-known restaurants across the country such as the The Airds Hotel and Restaurant in Port Appin and the Chez Roux brand. Now they are ready to take charge of their own establishment where they intend to follow in the footsteps of previous owners Sarah Jones and Jane StuartSmith, putting slow food and low food miles at the forefront of the business. Their ethos is
32
to make sustainable fine food accessible to everyone. Sarah Jones said “It was a hard decision to sell the Whitehouse after nearly 20 years, but we have no regrets as we know it is in excellent hands and Agi and Chris will make it thrive once more. We are delighted the Whitehouse lights will be shining again soon together with great food and a warm welcome.” Chris and Agi would like to
thank both Sarah and Jane for their help and unwavering support. “We hope to be able to build on all their hard work by creating a fine dining restaurant that has the community at its heart and focuses on the sustainability of its output”. The Whitehouse is open for lunch and dinner TuesdaySaturday.

POLES APART BUT TOGETHER IN FOOTIE Iain Ferguson Two talented Lochaber footballers on opposite sides of the world and at opposite ends of their careers have been recognised for their skills and dedication to ‘the beautiful game’. Former Caol man James Campbell has been honoured in Australia for his commitment to football being awarded life membership of Football Victoria. Originally from Clunes Avenue, he left school at 15, becoming Aberdeen FC’s youngest debutant. He later moved to Melbourne to further his footballing career, playing in 225 National Soccer League games with three clubs in Victoria, also turning out three times to represent the State. He then embarked on a coaching career over three decades, leading junior age state teams into several National Championships
34
and playing a key role in the implementation and delivery of ‘Football Victoria’s’ academy programme. Closer to home in Fort William, 22-yearold goalkeeper Martin MacKinnon has been recognised for his footballing achievements with the award of Young Footballer of the Year by his present club, Clachnacuddin FC. Martin began his footballing career with Fort William FC Juniors, before signing for Caley Thistle Under 11s, working his way through their youth squads to their first team. He also gained experience with spells on loan to Buckie and Fort William FC, but didn’t take up the offer of a new deal with Caley Thistle, joining Clachnacuddin last summer to continue enjoying the game at senior level.
