My first large project at Cal Poly was a creative redesign of a section of Harford Pier in Avila. This project involved extensive surveying of the existing pier and drafting many as-built drawings. The redesign explored the experience of the pier and its relation to the surrounding context. The main feature of my redesign was the shade structure which continued the undulating flow of the mountains and the ocean onto the pier.

ParaSite was another exploration into how spaces interact with and relate to the people who experience them. This project resulted in the design and fabrication of a large interactive sculpture which enhanced the vertical wind movement through the upper corner of a semi enclosed atrium. This kinetic installation, inspired by the works of artist Theo Jansen, allowed users to control the fabric wave that ran throughout the space.

Design Cal Poly worked with areas around one of the larger and most used lawns on campus. The project addressed the need to provide a platform from which speakers or performers could project over the entire lawn. My design drew inspiration from an array of slender columns already found at the site and grew from them to allow users access to the roof of an adjacent building as well as provide a transitional platform.

Sited on the central coast this project provides an educational attraction to visitors. The Estero Bluffs Nature Center demonstrates how man can build while respecting the balance of nature. The Nature Center is built in harmony with the site and utilizes the Chumash ideals of limitation, moderation, and compensation. The buildings mimic the concave shape of the bays along the coast by focusing around a central patio.

The design for this apartment complex in downtown Portland contained 60 mixed residential units with access to outdoor space for each. One very unique twist to this project was the requirement to incorporate natural habitat space for Portland’s local bat and bird populations into the design. This integration of green wildlife habitat was a way to expand Portland’s green belt by spreading ecological pockets around the city.

Built by hand using mostly reused and reclaimed wood, this table was designed to be sturdy yet easily broken down and moved. A key feature of this table is that the top surface is mounted on arms which allow it to transition between a lower closed position, and a higher position for more ergonomic working. This lift-top ability makes the table much more flexible and appropriate for a wide variety of uses.

This design for a public library in a low income community created a multi-use space while incorporating community needs and green technologies. With a small gallery space and views of the beautiful coastline, the library reflects the residents love for the outdoors as well as embraces and supports local creativity. The new public library provides a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors alike.
