XABIDB Hi! I’m Xabier Dorronsoro, a basque product designer passionate about design and all its involved creation process. Product design and UI/UX are the most interesting design areas for me and also the ones I would like to work on full time. I apply user centered design methodologies in order to get the best possible solutions. Recently, I’ve just started to share some content on my Instagram page to keep improving my skills.

VEGANISM The vegan food market is expected to grow more than 120% by 2026. Vegan diets are the less greenhouse gas emitting diats as well.

GLOBAL WARMING Since global warming is a fact, countries focus their effort on reducing CO2 emissions. EU reduced its emissions by 5% during last year.

URBAN GARDENING Urban gardening is a rising trend in some of the world’s biggest cities and it brings many benefits to its owners.

TARGET AUDIENCE Culture is targeted towards young urbanites between 20 and 35 yers old. They have just moved out on their own and they start experimenting with their diet. They are healthy people who eat nutritious and sustainable food and they feel loyalty toward brands with similar values. Although they live in cities, they are worried about the health of the planet and they want to do theis bit. They are expert mobile device users and expect mobile applications for any product, which can be great way to build brand loyalty.

MOROCCO Morocco is widely known for its tea tradition, thats why chamomile, thyme, mint and rosemary seeds are included.

MEXICO Mexican kit contains epazote, piquin pepper, coriander and hyssop seeds because of its culinary culture.

INDIA Indian kit includes cumin, poppy, liveforever and basil seeds as it is one of the world’s leading exporter of spices.

LIFE CICLE Most of the packaging parts have another utility on the product’s life cicle, the casing turns into plant pots, cardboard separators into legs and ropes into pendants. In addition, the kit includes dehydrated soil discs, seeds and hanging hooks.

16

APP The application is divided into two parts. On the one hand, the plant care section shows how often each plant has to be watered and, on the other hand, the recipes section shows how to use them. This is due to the fact that every offered plant has a culinary use.

18

MATERIALS Culture parts are made of recycled materials and, at the end of its life cycle, they can be recycled again. More precisely, most of Culture’s parts are manufactured of cellulose based materials such as paper, cardboard or moulded cellulose.

WRIST PAIN Identified ergonomic problem due to long-term, repetitive moves and old handle design. It can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

PREMIUM

INNOVATION

Company is looking for a new product for its premium line. This line with precise design guidelines is made of top-quality materials.

Bellota is interested in researching innovative handle designs arguing common handle hasn’t changed much in the past 50 years.

CURRENT HANDLE The hand tool is, nowadays, a very trivial product, a competitive offer is not enough in order to succeed, innovation is a must. Manufacturers have to stay ahead of trends and develop concepts that optimize tools functions by offering tangible advantages to the user. It is necessary to bring new capabilities to the company in terms of new products/concepts development in order to enrich the know-how and increase the competitive advantage. The handle in the picture is the most used one and it can be made of bimaterial plastic or wood.

VERSATILITY The new handle design approaches the hand to the metallic sheet allowing a better tool control. But, above all, offers the possibility of grabbing the handle in various positions, which could improve the carpal tunnel syndrome problem.

30

HANDLE DESIGN The handle has been designed following Bellota’s premium design guidelines. The main features of the guidelines are the main use of two different plastic materials. On one hand, the black rough plastic material called power zone confers a resistant aspect. On the other hand, the grip zone is made of a rubbery soft touch material and the grip is reinforced by the X-shaped slots.

32

MARKET NICHE The product is targeted for plasterers, who are the ones that use the tool for most time during the day. The metallic sheet has sharp edges, which is an essential feature for plasterers. Besides, the sheet also gets a concave shape in consequence of the welded screws. This shape is also highly valued by users.

34

VALUATION After testing the product with several plasterers, the project finished with a high acceptance in contrast to the previous project scepticism. Thus, manufactured functional prototypes were given to the plasterer partners in order to obtain more feedback.

Orbea Oiz is one of the world’s best-selling mountain bikes. This personal project’s objective is to incorporate a digital device into the bicycle stem with a view to solve a common problem.

INTERNET OF THINGS The internet of things encompasses all the physical products connected to the network. This can be used to collect information and improve user experience.

GPS TRACKERS LOSS GPS devices are an independent spare part of a bicycle withthe risk that this entails, as they can be stolen or lost in falls.

SOCIAL MEDIA Social networks facilitate communication between users and users-companies. This brings benefits to both sides even if it needs some care.

Select a MTB track on the smartphone.

Divide selected track into terrain sections.

Edit bicycle features for each section.

Export custom track to the built in GPS device.

MTB features example while riding a singletrack downhill.

App will end up learning and predicting user preferences.

APP An app has been designed in order to complement the built in gps device. This app enables the customisation of some of the bicycle’s features. Both suspensions and saddle height are the customisable elements, in such a way that the rider just has to care about the basics, to pedal. Finally, the app also allows users to follow other riders and try their custom routes.

44

FRAME DESIGN The new frame design mantains the lines of the current bike modifying some lines in order to confern a more agressive aspect. The stem and frame redesign involve front suspension modification, whose case lenghtens as suspension travel maintains its 120mm.

46

BUILT IN GPS The GPS device has been incorporated to the bike respecting frame lines. Stem surface has been lifted a bit to differentiate from the frame and from other brand bikes. The device of the bike just displays the navigation screen, which also allows the customisation of the three mentioned features while the user is riding the bike.

48

ADDED VALUE In one hand the app will end up learning each users preferences for every circumstances. So that the algorithm will be able to predict each user wishes. On the other hand, the company will collect much more data than before enabling the possibility to improve the offer, develop the bike or adjust some spare parts.

Onda bench is the result of a university project where the team of four people were asked for redesigning a bench for a specific scenario.

BILBAO Bilbao is a city full of contrasts, being the mixture between tradition and modern architecture a very interesting point.

COOL TOUCH Station users have determined that its cool touch is the most negative aspect of the current benches.

SECURITY The bench is going to be placed in the Indalecio Prieto train station, a semi-opened station with 24h security.

USER TESTS An amount of 50 interviews were made in order to discover the main weaknesses of the current bench. Where you can see that most of the people complained about bench's cool touch followed by its uncomfortability, which also could be consequence of the cool touch.

MATERIALS The choice of materials maintains the contrast mentioned above. The seat is made of wood in order to solve its cool touch problem, which doesn’t cool down as much as ceramic materials to temperature fluctuations. The chosen wood is local oak formerly used in shipbuilding. Moreover, the support pieces are made of folded corten steel, which is usually used in modern basque sculpture and architecture.

60

FORMS The folded plate part draws the wavy shape of the bench in reference to the city’s modern architecture. On the contrary, the parametric design in wood has been used to give the bench a resemblance to the skeleton of ancient ships, in the construction of which Bilbao played a very important role during the 15th century.

62

SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT Abando Indalecio Prieto train station has two rectangular semi-opened spaces for waiting. Taking into account that Bilbao’s train station is not specially busy, the benches have been placed in no apparent strict order. The Idea behind the apparent disorder is to resemble modern museums, where visitors find large spaces where they can move around, sit and observe the works.
