SURFBOARD GUIDE

1

THE SHAPER A shaper since the age of 15, Xanadu opened a surfboard factory at 17, operating it for the next 5 years. The next four years he traveled around the world surfing contests, free surfing, and shaping in countries like Australia, Japan, Hawaii, Indonesia, South and Central America, Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, and Europe. He moved to California permanently in 1987 and established what is now Xanadu Surf Designs in 1989. Xanadu attributes much of his success to timing and hard work. Years traveling and learning about waves and people of various cultures provided him a more balanced perspective to his artistic, business, and personal approach. Through the 90’s many top professional surfers took the sport to new heights riding Xanadu’s. After riding his boards for one full year, Brad Gerlach jumped 12 places to finish the ASP tour ranked 2nd in the world. Lisa Anderson also won two world titles riding Xanadu Surfboards. Xanadu can still be found traveling to far off corners of the globe going on shaping missions for his distributors in Australia, South America and Asia or research and development missions deep into the Indonesian Archipelogico testing new designs. Xanadu consistently draws inspiration and ideas from working with several WQS and WCT pros, local chargers, NSSA grommets, and ripping soul rangers.

SURFBOARD FAMILIES The Xanadu family of boards was born of the concept that good design results in better performance. With this guide you can travel along the varieties of Xanadu designs and choose whatever fits with your needs. You can also order a custom one of our models according to your own style.

FAMILY 1 Family One models are designed with most of the rocker curve in the middle to the nose of the board. The drive is generated from the middle of the board to the tail. Since the rocker is mostly focused in the middle to nose area of the board, the nose rocker frees the rail, allowing it to engage quickly for optimum speed and control in critical sections of the wave. ROCKER CURVE FAMILY 1 ROCKER CURVE FAMILY 1

NOSE ROCKER

FAMILY 2

NOSE ROCKER

Family Two models are designed with most of the rocker curve in in the middle of the board, ROCKER CURVE FAMILY 2 less rocker in the tail and nose. This rocker design allows forward drive and speed to be generated from the nose and tail areas of ROCKER CURVE FAMILY 2 the board. Because of the flatter nose curve, Family Two models paddle and catch waves easy in all surf conditions and quality. MIDDLE ROCKER

MIDDLE ROCKER

ROCKER CURVE FAMILY 2

FAMILY 3 NOSE ROCKER

Family Three models are designed with most of the rocker curve from the tail to 1/3 up. Low entry curve 1/3 from the tail to the nose of the board allows for easy paddling and wave entry for all Family Three models. Forward drive comes from 1/3 up from the tail to the nose of the board allowing for long sweeping carves and down the line speed. All Family Three models work great in MIDDLE ROCKER mushy or fat waves. ROCKER CURVE FAMILY 2 For shorter length models, the tail rocker curve is designed to release the tail when doing critical turns in the wave pocket. For the longer models, the flatter nose rocker equals long nose rides, and the accentuated tail rocker allow precise turning and pivoting.

MIDDLE ROCKER TAIL ROCKER

FAMILY 4 Family Four models are designed with a consistent and even rocker curve. They feature no TAIL ROCKER exaggerated bottom curve from nose to tail, designed with a smooth transition from nose rocker curve to tail. CONTINUOUS ROCKER All Family Four models are meant to surf off the bottom and top, built to draw clean, smooth lines. The rocker design will work similar in all conditions, making this family models versatile and user friendly. We use this curve design in our modern longboards.

ZIP FAMILY 1 / SMALL WAVE IDEAL WAVE SIZE ANKLE TO CHEST HIGH EXPERIENCE LEVEL INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED ABOUT THE SHAPE

With the ZIP Xanadu mixed some of the early 1980’s small wave board theory with what we have learned from the most recent small wave revolution. This resulted in a lower rocker wave catching machine. This board has a flatter deck with a fuller down rail. A bump is also incorporated into the outline to loosen the board up. The ZIP features a flatter bottom into a slight double concave with exaggerated vee out the corners of the tail. The name for the new tail for the Zip is SQUALOW. This combined with an 80’s style rocker and outline produces a hip retro rocket. If you want to go fast, this is the board. Surprisingly maneuverable and carvy, this board is a great addition to a summer quiver. HOBYO FAMILY 3 / SMALL WAVE IDEAL WAVE SIZE ANKLE TO OVERHEAD EXPERIENCE LEVEL BEGINNER TO ADVANCED ABOUT THE SHAPE

The Hobyo is the perfect blend of old school funk and new school fun. K19 FAMILY 1 / GROM IDEAL WAVE SIZE ANKLE TO OVERHEAD EXPERIENCE LEVEL BEGINNER TO ADVANCED ABOUT THE SHAPE

The K-19 is legendary. This is our fully customizable grommet board. More titles have been won on this lately in the NSSA than almost any other board. Surfers like Koa Smith and Ian Gentil swore by this board. There is nothing low tech about it. With an accentuated curve in the nose, the K-19 has the same classic Xanadu feel as the X21, but it is smoothed out for the surfers that don’t quite weigh as much. This model also features a lower tail rocker for added drive and speed since these sized boards all ready fit well in almost any sized pocket. STEP OFF FAMILY 1 / BIG WAVE IDEAL WAVE SIZE DOUBLE OVERHEAD TO XXL EXPERIENCE LEVEL ADVANCED ABOUT THE SHAPE

The ‘Step Off’ board is a little wider and thicker than the ‘Tow In’, but it is still considerably smaller than a short board. A heavier higher density blank supported by a thicker stringer, gives the board strength and more importantly momentum in heavy conditions. A single concave bottom gives maneuverability, speed, and control in critical waves. The rocker is subtle and superb, and was designed to keep the board moving in the barrel while allowing it to stick to the face of any wave. The Atomic Rocket is a fish that surfs good in small waves but was made to excel in chest to head high waves. The Atomic Rocket will hold very well in hollow waves. Xanadu designed this little rocket with a bottom contour tuned to surf better in the pocket and in the barrel. LEATHERBACK FAMILY 3 / LONGBOARD IDEAL WAVE SIZE ANKLE TO CHEST EXPERIENCE LEVEL BEGINNER TO ADVANCED ABOUT THE SHAPE

The Leatherback is a great California cruzer. Seriously, there have been Sea Turtle sightings at Cardiff Reef again, so the Leatherback will fit right in. This board features a little bit wider over all out line with a wider tail block compared to a board like the Sumo. This provides a little bit more old school cruisy feel to the board. Perhaps the most “old school” of our longboards, the Leatherback is a blast. FIN SET UP SINGLE FIN FIN SYSTEMS FIN BOX / GLASS ON TAIL OPTIONS ROUND TAIL / MOON TAIL / SQUARE TAIL
