Every year, young mothers from all over America leave their children behind and set out to the heartland of the United States to compete for the title of Mother of the Year. One of these hopeful candidates will go on to impress the judges and become the reigning national representative of mothers all over the country. This documentary film follows three women as they leave their crucial roles at home and go on the journey of a lifetime. From a tough Midwestern farmer’s wife with five kids to a wealthy East Coast mother of two to a working mother in Iowa, we explore these women’s different worlds attempting to understand their hopes and dreams, pressures and fears.

The 4CV was primarily an act of resistance, the adventure of a few men who, since the debacle of 1940 and until liberation in 1945, in their German-occupied factories, secretly designed the car of the people for a free France. The 4CV was also an industrial adventure which led its designers to envisage the machines of the future, the first electronic robots of mass assembly-line production. Finally, the 4CV is a historical symbol of rediscovered freedom in France, whose wildest dreams, thought up at the sobering times of defeat and at liberation, were to come true within a few years during the ´Thirty Glorious Years´. A documentary designed as an investigation behind the scenes of an unhoped-for success, that of a few men who triumphed to make their dream into a reality for all.

De la mort du britannique Tom Simpson sur les pentes du mont Ventoux, au coup de poing donné au belge Eddy Merckx surnommé le cannibale : le tour de France a ses coups d’éclats. Mais il y aussi les zones d’ombres, les scandales du dopages, l’argent bien sûr. Mais le Tour de France, c’est aussi le Tour des français. Un événement sportif très populaire puisque près de 15 millions de spectateurs font le déplacement et passent en moyenne 6 heures au bord de la route pour assister au tour, à leur tour. Dès 1957, Roland Barthes le disait « le tour de France est une grande épopée ». The last three decades in our “iron” 20th century brought unexpected but gratifying advances in democracy all around the globe. Several dictatorships fell or were wiped out. In the 1970s, outdated regimes that were still oppressing people in southern Europe. Our film will take a look at this struggle by comparing and contrasting the case of three countries: Spain, Greece and Portugal. While all three are quite close in terms of their geography, history and culture, and all three joined the European Community after building democratic nations, each of these countries has trod its own unique path.

Europe’s most mysterious terrorist organization operated untroubled for thirty years, despite 23 assassinations, 50 terrorist attacks, and 32 bank robberies that have netted an estimated 70 million euros. The 17N terrorist group carried out its attacks between 1975 and 2002. Twenty of its members, including the group’s leader Alexandro Giotopoulos, were finally arrested in July 2002. They were put on trial in Athens between 3 March 2003 and 10 December 2003. The arrests were finally made thanks to close cooperation between the French, British and American secret services. 17N’s leader, Alexandro Giotopoulos, was born in France, studied in Paris, and is married to a French woman.

ETA is the last terrorist organization still operating on European soil. For the very first time, a documentary film traces the long history of the Basque nationalist movement. It tells how ETA was founded in 1959, during the repressive Franco era, and explores the successive strategies it used before finally resorting to bloody terrorism from the 1980s onwards. A series of interviews with ETA founding members, victims’ families, police officials, judges and political figures, interspersed with a wealth of archive footage, offers viewers an in-depth deciphering of nearly fifty years of ideological clashes, terror and negotiations.

Le vol AF8969 ALGER-PARIS Le 24 décembre 1994, un Airbus d´Air France était détourné à Alger par un commando islamiste du GIA. Après 54 heures de terreur et d’angoisse, les otages sont finalement libérés sur l’aéroport de Marignane par le GIGN. «Les terroristes voulaient se faire exploser au-dessus de Paris» affirment les passagers au sortir de l’avion. Les attentats de septembre 2001 avaient bien connu un précédent.

GREECE 17N : Le terrorisme en question La plus mystérieuse organisation terroriste en Europe, jamais inquiétée pendant trente ans, malgré 23 assassinats, 50 attentats, 32 braquages de banque avec un butin estimé aujourd´hui à 70 millions d´euro. Ce groupe terroriste a commis ces actions entre 1975 et 2002. Le procès de la vingtaine de membres, finalement arrêtés en juillet 2002, dont le chef Alexandro Giotopoulos, s´est déroulé à Athènes entre le 3 mars 2003 et le 10 décembre 2003. Ces arrestations ont été possibles grâce à la coopération des services secrets, français, anglais et américains. Enquête.

“The Last Outpost” tells the story of the U.S. effort to build up the Afghan Army, the only real exit strategy, but shot from the ground and on the frontlines, a chronicle of the war through the portrait of two Afghans and an American soldier in an embedded team of 130 Afghans. The two cinematographers-directors, T.Grucza & Y.Maldavski, spent one month and a half with the soldiers in a tiny outpost, by the Pakistan border, looking into Waziristan. Ultimately, the film is a look at the absurdity of the war and the impossibility of the fight.

Filmmakers Yuri Maldavsky and Tim Grucza spent several months over the course of one year with the White platoon of the 1/7 cavalry division in southern Baghdad. Shot with two cameras, the film follows them all the way back to their hometown in Texas. The filmmakers’ unique access to their subjects enables them to draw an intimate portrait of the war in Iraq and the “men behind the soldiers” who are fighting it.

Populism, this virulent expression of a refusal to open up, and accept difference, of looking inward, carries along, in a backdrop of real socio-economic humiliation and frustration, a mish-mash of nostalgia and myths which are as irrational as they are obscure. With its ramifications, it plunges Europe once more into a range of current issues which the democratic side of Europe believed all but eradicated since 1945. A sobering genealogy is once more upon us. Karim Miské reopens France’s history books to look back at the 20th century as lived by Muslims. The film unfolds chronologically, piecing together the memories and cultural identity of this French minority. In our collective representations, Muslims are the embodiment of the “other,” the “stranger.” It is not our intention to downplay the differences. We do, however, want to show that while the history linking France and Muslims has been filled with more violence than exchange, it remains nonetheless a common history, one that we inevitably share.

This three-part documentary film weaves together many archives and new testimonies to tell us about the contemporary French black history over 130 years. This film gives a voice to both the protagonists and the heirs of this history and relays the building of a French Black identity. An old history, a presence which becomes visible with the 1889 World’s Fair. A story which goes through two World wars, the colonial period, the Independencies, and the time of the migrations from the West Indies and Africa, but also from the Indian Ocean, New Caledonia, and from the African American influence since the Interwar period.

With the participation of the famous Japenese fashion designer KENZO Takada Being Asian in France means coming from former French protectorates and colonies of the Indochinese peninsula or having emigrated from China, Japan, Korea or Thailand. South-Eastern Asians who live in the Hexagon all have their own history constitutive of the current identity of their community which is often quoted as “a model of integration”. But what do we really know about this “invisible” community that France could no longer do without?

Opium dens, “con gai”, the abandoned wives of the “Petits blancs” (Little Whites), the major expatriate families, Piastre trafficking: from 1930 to 1952, the film traces the history of a French presence in the Far East. The story of the Petits blancs (fictional characters) who set off for adventure and their experiences with the bank, the plantations, the government… gradually paints a depiction, throughout the film, of European expat society. Through these intertwining lives, we pass through an era and through a part of the Continent: Indochina.

May 8, a signal emitted from Berlin traveling in concentric circles, and encompassing the world. From the destroyed streets of Berlin a message rose: never again. The world must change. This peace ceremony was twofold. First came May 7, in the small school in Rheims, north-east France, and in the face of Russian anger, the ceremony marking May 8, thus delaying a ceasefire with Germany until May 9 (Soviet time). From May 7 to May 9, a difference is felt as it grows, and two separate blocs are formed ...

It was one of the biggest trials of the 20th century. The one that opened the way for the creation of an international justice system. It was the first trial to be filmed, and yet very few people have ever seen the nearly 25 hours of original footage. For the very 1st time, a film takes viewers inside the courtroom, via the original trial footage filmed by John Ford’s crew.Most of it has never before been broadcast; all of it has been fully restored. This gripping faceoff with Nazi war criminals lets viewers discover the most powerful moments in this historic trial. It includes interviews with some of the surviving participants, who put the events and their stakes into perspective.

Tuviah Friedman was one of the world’s most famous Nazi hunters, along with Simon Wiesenthal. Friedman started relentlessly tracking down Nazi war criminals after the close of the war, driven by an unquenchable thirst for revenge after his entire family was killed in the concentration camps, and a steadfast determination to let the whole world know what happened there. He spent over 60 years going from Vienna to Haifa and all the way to Buenos Aires, ferreting out Nazis and questioning people, sometimes even resorting to torture. How many of us now know that between November 1938 and May 1946, 600 thousand people suffered confinement through simple administrative decision? None of these people had committed a crime or any offence, the only reason that made them prisoners was the fact that they supposedly represented potential danger to the State or to society. They were many to populate French camps: Spanish Republicans, Germans and Austrians, French Communists, to whom were soon added foreign Jews or Gypsies, and later, at the Liberation, in majority suspected collaborationists but also, which is of less common knowledge, black market traffickers and also German civilians.

After various leftist parties forged an alliance to fend off the fascist tide embodied by Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany, which threatened peace and democracy on the continent, several European countries concurrently adopted a Popular Front political strategy. This led to an unprecedented mobilization of the masses, labor unions, and intellectuals. In France, Austria, Spain, Belgium and Greece the antifascist battle became a top priority. Comprised of high quality archive footage from all over Europe, and never-before-heard audio recordings, this film retraces the birth and strategy of Europe’s Popular Fronts from 1929 to 1939.

Throughout the inter-war period, one man fascinated the French public. His photo was frequently seen on the front page of the papers. He inspired writers, playwrights and filmmakers. His name was Anthelme Mangin. His nickname was ‘The living unknown soldier’. He was an amnesiac soldier who returned to France from a German prison camp in 1918. As soon as his existence became known, he was saddled with the pain of the three hundred thousand families of soldiers who never returned, who were unable to grieve. Dozens of women, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children claimed him as their missing loved one, despite his physical appearance, age and education.

This film addresses the Great War through the words and acts of those who refused it, whether soldiers on the front lines or conscientious objectors, pacifists or revolutionaries. In the historiography of the Great War, military disobedience, mutiny and engaged pacifism have become a silent myth. For a long time, these acts of refusal were taboo and largely unknown and they carry a strong symbolic weight. They are the first manifestations of what will later become conscientious objection and that will spread during the following wars, in particular during the Vietnam and Algerian wars. From the truce of Christmas 1914 up to the mutiny of Kiel in October of 1918, men have rebelled against the war. A hundred years later in Verdun, the ground still bears traces of the war. Out of this symbolic and forever marked soil, rise the voices of those who have refused 14/18 : REFUSER LA GUERRE Fraternisations, grèves, émeutes, parsèment le déroulement de la Grande guerre. Calomniées et réprimées, la désobéissance militaire, la mutinerie, s’apparentent à un mythe silencieux. More than one million Armenians perished between 1915 and 1916 in massacres or brutal deportation programs. It was one of the 20th century’s worst genocides, and one of its most controversial. It has been the subject of bitter legal battles, with Turkey still denying it ever happened. In an attempt to understand the origins, nature and stakes of the Armenian Genocide, Laurence Jourdan went back in time to look at massacres of Armenians in the decades leading up to the mass murder, and analyze the geopolitical situation both before and after the genocide. French colony during World War Two, May 8th is a day of mourning. Carried away by the jubilation of victory, the Algerians dared ask for independence. The French colonial army responded with gunfire, setting off horrifically bloody clashes between Muslims and Europeans. The crackdown would last nearly 3 months and leave thousands Muslims dead. Mixing never-before-seen footage and personal accounts, our film raises the veil on the mechanisms and consequences of this violent colonial crackdown.

Sixty years ago, Algeria was being ravaged by a civil war that would become one of the 20th century’s most deadly wars of independence. For nine months, French soldiers ferociously cracked down on Algerian activists in the city of Algiers. The documentary mixes archive footage with excerpts from Pontecorvo’s film and numerous interviews, most notably with women who planted bombs for the FLN and have agreed to tell their stories for the very first time. The film throws light on one of the shadiest and most fascinating episodes in recent history, offering insights that help us better understand the burning issues of our own times.

L’AUTRE 8 MAI 45 Le 8 mai 1945 est une date clé pour l’histoire de France. Chaque année, on célèbre la victoire sur l’Allemagne nazie. De l’autre côté de la Méditerranée en Algérie, ce jour de gloire est un jour de deuil. Dans la liesse de la victoire en 1945, des Algériens ont revendiqué leur volonté d’indépendance. Ils subiront durant plusieurs semaines une violente répression conduite par l’armée française. Elle fera des milliers de victimes. Yasmina Adi a retrouvé de nombreux documents inédits, des archives du gouvernement français et des services secrets anglais et américains. Elle est allée à la rencontre de ces hommes et ces femmes qui ont vécu et subi cette répression. Cette enquête lève le voile sur les mécanismes et les conséquences de cette répression coloniale.

The trilogy allows us to understand how, a quarter of a century after the war of independence ended, leaving scars on both sides of the Mediterranean, Algeria has been plunged into an endless conflict, with violence which is both unprecedented, and unpredictable. «Old calibers» is a droll and ferocious comedy that tells the story of four pensioners at a senior’s residence called « Les Églantines » (Wild Roses) and of how they transgress the rules in an attempt to reconnect with their emotions of youth past.
