A Message from the President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, As our school community heads into the 2013-2014 academic year, it does so buoyed by the tremendous gifts of time, talent, and treasure from our ever supportive extended family. As you will read in the Annual Report at the end of this publication, last year’s Clipper Fund not only surpassed budgeted fiscal goals, but also attracted a record number of donors and volunteers. The continued growth in philanthropic support will be critical if we are to realize the ambitious academic, extra-curricular, and physical enhancements to our school over the coming years. The support this past year, however, was never more valued and representative of what the Xaverian family is about than it was after Superstorm Sandy devastated our community. As a result of the generosity of alumni and friends, we were able to provide an additional $250,000 in tuition assistance and support to many of our families affected by the storm. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the Clipper Fund. This year, your support has enabled us to accomplish impressive goals set forth by the Strategic Plan which was approved by our Board of Trustees. We have committed to moving forward with several initial projects which will improve the infrastructure of our physical plant, ensuring that a solid foundation has been laid during the initial phase of the Strategic Plan. I am excited to announce that renovations are currently underway in the auditorium to upgrade the electrical systems as we install new lighting and audio-visual systems in support of our Music and Theater Programs. The Fine Arts Program will expand into a previously unused area on the third floor, offering much-needed additional creative space for the budding artistic talents being nurtured at 7100 Shore Road. In support of our commitment to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program, the former Tech Lab is being redesigned into our new STEM Lab to accommodate thousands of dollars’ worth of cutting-edge equipment, ensuring that Xaverian students are poised to become extraordinary leaders of tomorrow. As part of ongoing beautification efforts, new trees have been planted on campus. Additional facilities improvements, curriculum enhancements, and growth of the endowment are all reflected in the six phase strategic plan. Some highlights include: • • • • • •
A new school entrance A dedicated wing for the Genesis middle school, which in turn creates additional classroom space for the high school State of the art science labs A new school chapel The next phase of auditorium enhancements supporting Music and Performing Arts A dedicated wing for an expanded Visual Arts program
The opportunities for Xaverian’s growth are endless, but only if we have the help of those who are inspired by the school’s past and committed to its future. Thank you for all that you do to ensure the success of our students, the continuation of our mission, and the promise of our future. Peace,
Robert B. Alesi ’78 President Xaverian, Fall 2013 1
Spirit of Xaverian Gala 2013 On Wednesday, May 1st, Xaverian hosted its annual Spirit of Xaverian Gala at the El Caribe Country Club in Mill Basin. The event, which honored Chris Mullin ’81, Frank Desiderio, Esq. ’65, Henry M. Spinelli, M.D. ’74, and Nick Vendikos, G’14, KHS ’87, drew over 500 attendees. The evening’s events were made special by the presence of student volunteers throughout the program. Guests were greeted by the Music at Xaverian String Quartet and enjoyed music by the Jazz Band throughout the cocktail hour. The dinner portion of the evening was kicked off by an appearance by the Pipe and Drum Corps and an a cappella rendition of the National Anthem sung by Charlotte Albunio, Genesis 8th grader. Paraskevi Paloumbis, Genesis 8th grader, Patrick Coen ’14, and Joseph Principato ’14 were part of the presentation of the Vision for the Future of Xaverian, which included brief thoughts regarding the limitless possibilities for Xaverian with the introduction of STEM (Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics) curriculum, as well as strategic renovations throughout the campus which would create a new wing for the Middle School and nurture the growth of the arts.

What if…
you were part of it all? Xaverian has offered its students a world-class education since 1957. As the world around us rapidly changes, so, too, must our curriculum, co-curricular offerings, and facilities. We are blessed to have a sound foundation on which to build to help ensure that the graduates of 2061 enjoy the same success and happiness that the first graduating class of 1961 did. As we plan for the future, we realize the importance of building from our past. Some things at Xaverian will always remain the same – a devotion to developing the minds and hearts of our students, a commitment to giving back to our community, and a dedication to preparing students to thrive in a collegiate environment. As life at Xaverian evolves, we are proud to be able to point to the success of our recent dynamic educational approaches, such as the adapting of the 1:1 learning environment using the iPad, the introduction of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum through a collaboration with Project Lead the Way, and the introduction of engineering, construction, and architectural specialties with the ACE Mentoring Program. The approval of a Strategic Plan in 2012 by the Board of Trustees ensures that the many “What ifs…” which have motivated our evolution become realities in the years to come. Some highlights from the plan include: a new school entrance; a dedicated wing for the middle school (which in turn creates additional classroom space for the high school); cutting-edge science labs; a new third floor art wing; a new school chapel; new and enhanced athletic facilities, as well as a state of the art auditorium, which is already under construction. You are part of it all… you ensure the success of our students, the continuation of our mission, and the promise of our future.

A d va nc i ng t h e M i s sion The 2013-2014 school year brings exciting new changes to Xaverian’s Development Office, which will now officially be coined the Office of Advancement. The mission of the Advancement Office is to provide for the future of Xaverian and perpetuate the legacy of the Xaverian Brothers’ educational mission by raising revenue to support those goals. After three successful years serving as Director of Development, Corinne King has relocated with her family. Although she will miss Xaverian dearly, she vows to remain a part of the community, stating, “Once a Clipper, always a Clipper.” After making great strides in increasing development revenue and participation rates, Corinne passes the torch to two highly skilled fundraising professionals. Mr. Vincent Torti, who has rejoined Xaverian as Director of Advancement, most recently served as Director of Advancement for Portledge School. Prior to that, Vin had handled fundraising for a multitude of non-profit organizations, including The Church of Saint Dominic, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Duke HomeCare & Hospice, Good Samaritan Hospital, Winthrop-University Hospital, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Earlier in his career, Vin spent nearly a decade serving in various roles at Xaverian, including faculty member, track coach, Director of Admissions and Public Relations, and Director of Development. Vin holds a Master of Arts in Theology from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Cathedral College. Mrs. Eileen Long Chelales, who joins Xaverian as Assistant Director of Advancement, most recently served as Director of Development at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School. Eileen’s impressive career spans nearly two decades and includes high ranking government positions, such as an appointment by President George W. Bush to Regional Administrator of the United States General Services Administration, Commissioner-Member of NY State Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, and Deputy Secretary of the Office of the NY State Governor. Eileen holds a Bachelors of Arts in History and an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law, both from St. Francis College. Especially proud of Eileen’s new position at Xaverian are her brothers, Christopher Long ’93 and Francis Long ’96, brotherin-law Christopher Chelales ’84, and nephew, Brian Long ’12. A strategic piece of advancing the mission of Xaverian is promoting good will with local elementary schools and maintaining a robust enrollment. With the recent departure of Mr. Gerard Buckley ’96, who served as Director of Admissions for three years and recently accepted an Assistant Principal position closer to his home in Queens, Xaverian is proud to announce the promotion of Mr. Mark Spelman ’92 to Director of Admissions. Mark, who has served as a faculty member and key assistant in Xaverian’s administration for the past 13 years, looks forward to promoting the unique benefits of a Xaverian education to academically talented students throughout Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Mark states, “My time as a student at 7100 Shore Road was nothing short of priceless. There is nothing that could make me happier than to spend my days introducing others to the unrivaled educational experience that Xaverian has been providing for over 55 years.” Mark holds a Liberal Arts degree from Excelsior College and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Fordham University.

A Message from the Principal As I sit to write this letter, I can’t help but wonder who coined the term “lazy days of summer.” Surely, he or she never spent time at 7100 Shore Road in the months of July and August! The campus is alive with energy as faculty, staff, administration, and the facilities team work tirelessly to ensure that the 2013-2014 school year will be one of Xaverian’s best. We are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) as a means to enhance our newly implemented STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program. Because of this collaboration, there will be unparalleled opportunities for intellectual growth for our students as they prepare for success in the global economy. Our faculty members have been traveling to PLTW conferences and taking advantage of a plethora of professional development opportunities with regard to STEM education. Additionally, our intrepid IT Department has been working tirelessly to revamp the Tech Lab to incorporate thousands of dollars’ worth of new equipment obtained through our partnership with PLTW. They have also been busy prepping a brand new batch of gleaming iPads for distribution to our student body, as well as outfiting various offices throughout the building with new computers and printers. Recently we celebrated the graduation of 65 exceptional students from our XCEL (Xaverian’s Community of Emerging Leaders) Program. We have high hopes that these students, who are now entering 8th grade, will soon return to our hallowed halls as Clippers. Our Summer Sports Program saw record participation rates this summer, attracting boys and girls grades 1 - 8 for weeklong sessions of basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, and lacrosse. Also, for the fifth year in a row, Xaverian and the surrounding Bay Ridge community served as home for over 80 international students from Italy, Spain, and Russia. The visiting students attended classes at Xaverian each morning, saw the sights of New York City in the afternoon, and spent evenings with their host families. Xaverian’s summer activities even extended all the way down to Nazareth Farm in West Virginia, where Peter Cardona ’14, Brendan Woods ’14, and Kenny Coraci ’14, along with Faculty Members Sal Tinervia ’97 and James Schreiner ’04, traveled to take part in an Appalachian service retreat project. So, my friends, I ask you: if these are the “lazy days of summer,” just how much will our community be able to accomplish during the 2013-2014 academic year? With God’s ever-guiding love and presence, the possibilities are endless! Sincerely,
Deacon Kevin J. McCormack, Principal

Xaverian’s 53rd Commencement On Saturday, June 1st, 239 seniors and their families assembled at Brooklyn College’s Walt Whitman Auditorium for Xaverian’s 53rd Commencement Exercises. The Pipe and Drum Corp artfully handled the Call to Order, playing a celebratory medley. The graduates then processed proudly into the auditorium to a rousing rendition of Pomp and Circumstance provided by the members of Xaverian’s Symphonic, Concert and Select Bands. Following the processional of the graduates, Principal Dcn. Kevin McCormack offered a greeting and Rev. Robert Mucci, J.C.L. ’75 offered the invocation. Acquafredda ‘13 presenting the Welcome Address the Class of 2013 Salutatorian, presented a touching Welcome Address. Peter reflected on how Xaverian has taught him to deal with both the distinct honor of being named valedictorian, while the hardships and triumphs of life. Peter also recounted Rev. Michael J.S. During his speech, you just need to ‘get it.’” In his speech, Peter said, “The Father Bruno said, “I believe you are the stuff saints are first few times you hear this, you have no idea what he’s made of, and your Xaverian education can guide you talking about. But the longer you are here [at Xaverian], towards realizing that true potential. Peter told the crowd, “Xaverian walks of life you enter, you will be called upon to bring men have the mindset to not think about whether they your gifts and talents to bear. We need you to exemplify should do the right thing, but to just do it.” He also said the fruits of your faith and character in the world, and to that over the last four years together, the Class of 2013 be men of compassion and love leading us forward.” The truly became what Theodore Ryken, the founder of the farewell address and benediction were offered by Louis Xaverian Brothers, had described as, “A band of Brothers M. Nine Students Represent Xaverian at NY State History Day Competition in Cooperstown A total of 32 students from Xaverian’s Middle School competed at the New York City National History Day competition on March 10th. Students presented their year-long independent research project to a panel of historians and experts who evaluated how their topics interpreted an annual theme. This year’s theme was Turning Points in History: People, Events, Ideas. Students chose one of five categories to display their work: historical papers, websites, documentaries, performances, or exhibit boards. Nine projects won awards in their categories. Seven projects placed in the top two in their categories and the following students went on to represent New York City at the New York State competition, held in Cooperstown, NY, on April 29, 2013: Alienor Manteau G’14, Stefano Priante G’13, Samantha Fernandes G’13, Gabrielle Ayoub G’13, Gianna Dario G’13, Abigail Petrassi G’13, Anna Siewers G’13, Elizabeth Quinn G’13, and Susanna Weir G’13. The following five students won in their categories and represented New York State at the National History Day competition in Maryland in June: Alienor Manteau G’14 (first place, Individual Exhibit), Stefano
Priante G’13 (first place, Individual Website), Samantha Fernandes G’13 (second place, Individual Website), Gabrielle Ayoub G’13 and Gianna Dario G’13 (second place, Group Performance). Additional awards went to Stefano Priante G’13, who won the National Baseball Hall of Fame Award for his website, which focused on the signing of Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Samantha Fernandes G’13, who won the New York State Historical Association Award for her website, which investigated the electrification of New York City. Xaverian middle schoolers will undoubtedly continue to be successful in the History Day Competition, as they begin preparing in the 6th grade by taking part in a Mini-History Fair in May.

Juniors and Seniors Participate in Urban Challenge Retreat in Camden, NJ Seven Xaverian students from the junior and senior classes traveled to Camden, NJ, to participate in the Romero Center’s Urban Challenge Program, a service-learning, immersion retreat experience, from January 31 to February 3. Wiktor Rzeszutko ’14, Andrew Schillaci ’13, Justin Chung ’14, Kyle O’Halloran ’13, Jacob Loff ’14, Raj Patel ’13, and Massimo Ferrigno ’14, along with Director of Campus Ministry Mr. John Dormer and Religion Department Curriculum Specialist Mr. Brendan Moloney, stayed for three nights at the Romero Center. They participated in various service projects with young children, the elderly, and individuals infected with HIV/AIDS at the MLK Jr. Developmental Center, Abigail House, and St. Francis House. In addition to offering the ministry of presence to those in need, the group spent one day living on $3 per person in order to learn how the poorest residents in the State of New Jersey feed themselves and their families. Below are some excerpts from reflections written by Xaverian students who took part in the retreat: Raj Patel ’13 One of the things that really impacted me was meeting an AIDS patient named Keith. He told us how he was “running the streets” of Camden before he found out he was HIVpositive. Once he was diagnosed, he felt it was a wake-up call from God to give up his dangerous lifestyle and 12 www.xaverian.org

settle down. It was amazing to hear how he used a negative situation to make a change for the better and became a positive member of the community. To me, one way of looking at the situation is that our experience in Camden is OUR wakeup call to become positive forces and help our neighbors in need. Andrew Schillaci ’13 I’d say that the people of Camden did more for us than we did for them. The things I learned there will stay with me forever. Learning that even those students who graduate high school have only the educational level of an eighth grader was very disturbing. Seeing the kids’ faces at the Martin Luther King Child Care Center was upsetting, knowing that the odds were stacked against them. The retreat also made me ask myself, “Why do the residents of Camden have to choose between housing, food, and utilities?”
Kyle O’Halloran ’13 This retreat, in one of the poorest and most dangerous cities in the country, changed my outlook of society as a whole. After seeing the states that these fellow Americans live in, it saddens me to see those more fortunate waste their money or talent. During the trip, I experienced true human love as I made new friendships with the children at the Martin Luther King Child Development Center. These children are ages 2-6 and live in a really bad neighborhood. Many people would think that they would be tough or mean due to their environment, but as soon as they saw me and my fellow Xaverian brothers, they welcomed us with love and affection. Jacob Loff ’14 One thing from the retreat I’ll never forget is surviving on $3 for a whole day. It was a challenging experience, but it really gave me some insight as to how most of the people in Camden live every day.

Junior Earns Perfect Score on the SAT Junior Michael Darby has earned a perfect score of 2400 on the SAT. Darby, who was both shocked and excited after seeing his scores, is already thinking about his college applications this fall. “I plan on applying to Princeton, Brown, Columbia, and a few other universities. I’m really interested in math and science,” he said. In addition to developing his impressive academic talents, Darby participates in co-curricular activities, including the Clipper Society, the Dramatics Society, Model U.N., Young Democrats Club, and the Student Coordinating Council. Darby’s father, Michael, is a proud graduate of the Class of 1964. The perfect score of 2400 on the SAT puts Michael in the 99.98th percentile of students who have taken the exam. Out of the 1,664,479 students who took the SAT in 2012, only 360, or .022%, achieved the highest possible score. In an interview with the Staten Island Advance, Darby offered advice to fellow students, saying, “My advice is to study hard, work hard and prepare as best they can, but also to work hard in school. Scholastic achievement,” he added, “is just as important, if not more so, than the SAT, and to sacrifice academics for the sake of preparing for the test would be a grave misstep.”
Mock Trial Team Visits Supreme Court By Kevin Savarese ‘14
In addition to providing students with a behind-the-scenes look at the Supreme Court in April, Judge Vincent Del Giudice ‘72, P’00 returned to campus last fall to offer a special legal presentation.
On Wednesday, April 17, 2013, members of Xaverian’s high school Mock Trial team accepted an invitation from Judge Vincent Del Giudice ’72 to attend a criminal trial in the Supreme Court of New York’s
Eastern District. The trial was underway when we arrived at 320 Jay Street, in downtown Brooklyn. Already in their third day of trial, the attorneys immediately began offering substantial new evidence in the process of persuading the jury. The trial offered a unique twist on court proceedings. Rather than a single jury consisting of twelve people, there were two juries, each consisting of twenty people. The trial had two defendants with separate charges, and each received his own jury. Such a proceeding, Judge Del Giudice explained to us after, was to allow for a quicker, more cost-effective trial. He did not allow any nonsense in his court, immediately striking down or sustaining objections without any chance for a plea from attorneys. The case itself consisted of riveting material. Following hours of constant questioning and testimony, an extended recess was taken in which Judge Del Giudice introduced himself to our group. He explained the intricacies of the law to us, and gave us background information on
the case before allowing us to ask him questions. He permitted us access to the area behind the desk where a judge sits and even provided us with a tour of the holding cells directly adjacent to the courtroom. Our unique experience continued as he brought us to his own chambers, an office on the top floor of the tallest court building in the United States, featuring a captivating view of the surrounding areas. Experiencing a courthouse and its internal proceedings firsthand allowed us to gain a rich understanding of the legal process. Mock Trial team moderator Mr. Montalbano said, “It was a great experience for our team. Our knowledge of the court proceedings assisted our understanding of the events that we observed. The Mock Trial Team is most appreciative of the generosity of Judge Del Giudice, his concern for Xaverian students, and his pride in our school. It is testimony to the life-long regard that alums have for Xaverian.” Xaverian, Fall 2013 13
H I G H Students ‘ACE’ Final Project for Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Mentor Program Xaverian students involved in the ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentor Program were proud to show off the wellconstructed result of their final project: a model of a bridge which would connect Manhattan’s 86th Street to New Jersey’s North Bergen. As part of this year-long program, students met weekly at different sites in the city to gain real-world knowledge about the
S C H O O L day-to-day operations in the design and construction industry, as well as the differences between the various fields of expertise within the architecture, construction, and design fields. The students spent valuable time with a construction manager, an engineer, and two interior architects. Xaverian’s future engineers had nothing but praise for the program. Robert Castronovo ’15 reflected on the program, saying, “It definitely gave me insight as to what I want to do as a career and gave me a better understanding of what architecture, construction and engineering professionals do in the field.” Matthew Bramante ’14 said, “I pretty much knew that I wanted to be an engineer before starting the program, and this experience has only strengthened my desire to enter the field.”
20 Students Traveled to Belgium as Part of Exchange Program A total of 20 sophomores and juniors took part in Xaverian’s 8th Annual Belgium Exchange Program. Clippers Making Waves Robotics Celebrates Stellar Year of Competition The 2012-2013 school year was the most accomplished year in the Robotics team’s 13 year history. Mr. James Schriener ‘04, Moderator of the Robotics team, summed up the team’s successful year, saying, “We were privileged to display our robot at Maker Faire NYC in the fall at the NY Hall of Science along with hundreds of other exhibits on the cutting edge of what people can create. With the help of the Genesis community, we repeated as Food Drive Champions and also became Shoe Drive Champions at an offseason scrimmage we attended in November. Community Board 10 once again partnered with us and Vanguard Environmental to host a community electronics recycling drive in our parking lot which collected three tons of electronics that would have been garbage otherwise. We built a robot called the Companion Cube and realized a long-term goal by successfully driving with a mecanum drive train. Our highest honor came at the NYC Regional at the Jacob Javits Center in March when we won the Industrial Safety Award sponsored by Underwriters Laboratory for

our team’s safety efforts during the school year and in the pit area at the competition that weekend. Looking ahead, we want to maintain the practices that earned us awards this year and add to our community service outreach.” Congratulations to the Genesis FIRST Lego League and Xaverian FIRST Robotics Competition team members on their hard-earned success!
Students Participate in Service Trip to Nazareth Farm This past June, Peter Cardona ’14, Brendan Woods ’14, and Kenny Coraci ’14, along with Faculty Members Sal Tinervia ’97 and James Schreiner ’04, traveled to Nazareth Farm in West Virginia to take part in an Appalachian service retreat project. The trip was structured around the cornerstones of the farm’s mission - Community, Service, Simplicity and Prayer. Xaverian students, along with nearly 40 others from NJ, Chicago and Indiana, worked on farm chores such as composting, fertilizing and preparing scratch-made food to feed the entire crew. They also worked on home improvement projects, such as roofing, building porches and wheelchair ramps, and painting, for the poor residents of the surrounding towns. The retreat emphasized unique ways in which prayer could be increased in the participants’ daily lives by including prayer time during hikes, every morning, every night, and before each meal and work project. By participating in all facets of this service retreat experience, the students learned that there are different kinds of giving, not the least of which is ministry of presence by simply making an effort to be with people and giving of yourself and your time. 16 www.xaverian.org

Fo ot b a ll - After a successful season which ended in a first round loss in the AAA playoffs, the Xaverian football program looks forward to a bright future under the talented leadership of Mr. Mike Jioia. Mike has served as Xaverian’s Assistant Football Coach for two years and is thrilled to be stepping into the Head Coach position, saying, “This is an extremely exciting time for me and my family. I will try my hardest to keep up the strong tradition that is Xaverian football. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.” Mr. Jioia brings extensive experience to Xaverian’s football program. He assisted with the offense and quarterbacks at William Paterson University in 2010, two years after working with their defensive line in 2008. Mr. Jioia was the head coach at Globe Institute of Technology and led the Knights to a 5-2 record during their inaugural season in 2007. A teacher at Xaverian, Jioia also served as the offensive coordinator for two seasons (2005-06). He helped lead the Clippers to the 2006 Catholic High School Athletic Association Championship.
C ro s s Co un t ry - The Cross Country team placed 11th out of 38 CHSAA Intersectional schools, its best finish since 2003. Nick Mandala ’15 qualified for the New York State Federation meet after an outstanding performance at the CHSAA Intersectional Championships on November 10th. His time of 13:54 was the fastest sophomore time by a Xaverian athlete since 1985. 18 www.xaverian.org
Bow l i n g - The Xaverian Bowling team is looking forward to rebounding after a disappointing season in 2012. The team is looking to rebuild after losing four graduating members of the Varsity team. This year, led by senior captain Joe Romano, they hope to return to the City Championships. Xaverian bowling is looking forward to a very exciting season! Socc er - After struggling early in the season, the boys really came together for the playoffs. The Clippers beat Iona Prep in the first round of playoffs on a great goal by Allen Ameh ’14. Despite a tough loss to Fordham Prep in the last ten minutes of the game, Coach Jaguande remains very proud of the entire team, and, in particular, Sal Barone ’13, who led the team in scoring during the season.
Swimmi n g - The Xaverian Swim Team completed an extremely successful season, capturing the 20122013 CHSAA Novice Championships. Under the leadership of Head Coach John Ward ’81, P’12,’14, and Coach Tom Fitzgerald P’11,’13, the Clippers also had their best finish since 2005 in the CHSAA City Championship finals. Although the squad will be losing some great talent in graduating seniors Jason Deodato, Mike Olsen, Brandon Gilliam, Anthony Salerno, Sal Ventrice and team captain, Tommy Fitzgerald, the squad has a strong crop of underclassmen, which promises even greater success in the future.
B a s k et b a ll - After another successful Varsity Basketball season competing in the prestigious New York City CHSAA “AA” division, the Clippers, led by senior captain Rob Rossiter ’14, will once again be one of the pre-season teams to be watched in the Metro area. Xaverian will travel to Torrey Pines in San Diego during the Christmas break to compete in the nationally acclaimed Torrey Pines Holiday Classic. I n do o r T r ac k - The Sophomore Track and Field team won the Brooklyn Queens Championship in February over Archbishop Molloy 62-57. Nick Mandala ’15, Bryan Powers ’15, Rich Napolitano ’15, Greg Juliano ’15, Vin Mangano ’15, Andonis Hughes ’15, and Andrew Gallagher ’15 were all individual champions. Louis Springer ’15 and Antonio Mannino ’15 also scored in their respective events. Ho c k e y - There was a sense of uncertainly entering last season, especially after graduating 12 seniors. The team demonstrated great perseverance, though, making the playoffs for the first time in seven years and advancing to the semi finals. The team is looking forward to welcoming a number of talented players next season. W r e s t l i n g - Congratulations to Joseph Donohue ’16 and John Montemarano ’13 for each placing 5th in the CHSAA State Championships in Buffalo on February 16th in their respective weight classes. The State Championships capped off what was a very successful season for
From the Sports Desk the wrestling team. B as eba ll - Xaverian Varsity Baseball defeated Archbishop Molloy in a showdown for first place in the Brooklyn/Queens division in May. Contributing to the win were Nick Meola ’15, who belted a pair of home runs, and Anthony Sigismondi ’14, who pitched four scoreless innings. On the Junior Varsity level, the team fell one game short of the championship game after losing a 4-1 game to Iona Prep in the semi-finals. Solid pitching and a superb defense which allowed under two runs per game carried them to a first place tie in the always tough Brooylyn/Queens division. The team finished with a 14-3 league record. L ac ros s e - The 2013 Varsity Lacrosse program finished with a first round playoff loss to Farrell. The season was the first under coaches Tomas Gonzalez ’92, P’16 and Pat Ward ’12, and JV Coach Bill Kenny ’93. The season highlights featured JV and Varsity wins over Xavier High School, and NYC City All Star Selections for Valerio Auguste ’13, Jon Holuka ’13, James Angelillo ’13, and Stephen D’Orazio ’13.
Leading goal scorer John Monahan ’13 was a standout player for the Clippers and was a go-to player when the team needed a goal. 2014 looks to be a bounce back season with Paul Schwarz ’15 taking over in goal, leading a sophomore and junior defense that will become the cornerstone of success in the years to come. Promising players to keep an eye on include Tomas Gonzalez Jr. ’16, James Vega ’16, Eddie Wilkinson ’15, Andrew Lauro ’15, Jay Stauble ’15, and Christian Bono ’15. The team will be captained by Michael Connena ’14, and led by Malik Griffith ’14, Alex Seabaugh ’14, John Freeze ’14, Sean Petronis ’14, and Joe Nugent ’14.
Tenni s - 2013 proved to be a turnaround season for the Varsity Tennis team. After two struggling seasons and the graduation of five senior starters, it looked like another sub-500 year was imminent. Instead, on the backs of the current seniors, and with some help from talented freshman, Xaverian’s Varsity Tennis team made it all the way to the city championship. In a hard-fought, back and forth match, Xaverian eventually succumbed to Salesian, but that did not put a damper on what was an extremely successful season. Volleyb a ll - The Xaverian Volleyball Squad had an impressive 2012-2013 season. Led by team captains Tommy Fitzgerald ’13, Andrew Filipowicz ’13 and Steven Swenson ’13, the Clippers performed well throughout the season and in the playoffs. Next season promises to be an exciting one, as
the Clippers, led by Head Coach Theresa Rau and Assistant Coach Judi Fitzgerald P’11, ’13, will return a talented and experienced group of underclassmen.
G olf - After finishing in fourth place overall, Coach Ameneiros expressed nothing but pride for his golfers, saying, “Although the 2013 Golf Team did not finish in the top three, I was extremely proud of the upperclassmen who competed in each match with professionalism and etiquette. The future is looking very bright with steadfast juniors and a very talented crew of sophomores moving up the ranks. We are looking forward to competing in the league once again for the upcoming season. With a new crop of incoming freshmen, we are hopeful that we will make the playoffs.” O ut do o r T r ac k - During the 2013 Outdoor Track and Field season the Clippers enjoyed great success. Since 2004, only four individuals have broke 2:10 in the half mile and 5:00 minutes in the mile. This past season alone, four athletes dipped under the 2:10 mark for the half mile: Nick Mandala ’15 (2:04), Brandon Zapata ’14 and Danny Gonzalez ’14 (2:05), and Richard Napolitano ’15 (2:07). Five Clippers came in under the 5:00 minute mark for the mile: Nick Mandala ’15 (4:40), Brandon Zapata ’14 (4:47), Danny Gonzalez ’14 (4:54), Matt Malloy ’14 (4:56), and Bryan Powers ’15 (4:59). All of these athletes will be returning in the fall for the 2013 Cross Country season and they will look to place as a team in the top three in the City. Xaverian, Fall 2013 19

Clipper Fund 2012-2013 2012 – 2013 Development Report Corinne M. King, Director of Development A year ago, when the Clipper Fund was launched, President Alesi and the Board of Trustees had high aspirations to achieve a significantly increased philanthropic goal of $ 1,280,000. Xaverian’s commitment to new curriculum, technology, facility improvements and financial aid needed to be funded, above and beyond the tuition revenue. The commitment to financial aid was tested in November when so many members of our school were affected by Superstorm Sandy. As a resident of Beach 145th Street at the time, I can personally attest to the struggle our families endured. Students supported one another, parents leaned on each other, and your financial support allowed us to increase our financial commitment to families in need. The generosity of alumni, parents and friends to support this increased financial aid budget, the Clipper Fund, and the many events held throughout the year resulted in a total giving record of $1,550,000. Thank you! Over the past three years the increase in dollars and participation in Xaverian’s charitable giving programs is nothing short of remarkable - a testament to your belief that preserving the legacy and continuing the tradition of a Xaverian education is worth your commitment. A few notable stats: • Parent donors increased from 62 to 519. • Alumni donors increased from 446 to 698. • Faculty and Staff donors increased from 12 to 49. • Leadership donors ($1,000+) increased from 105 to 153. This year’s Spirit of Xaverian Gala was the first public forum where President Alesi was able to share his vision for the future of Xaverian. In addition to the support of Chris Mullin ’81, the hundreds of people who attended the event helped to raise $150,000, doubling the revenue from the previous year, and were the first to voice their support for the efforts of the upcoming year. These are exciting times at 7100 Shore Road! The $1.55M raised is the result of the hard work of many. I would like to thank the 2012 - 2013 Advancement team, Ed Mayrose ’79, P’05,’07,’08, Gerard Buckley ’96, Erin Cicalese, Brittany Smith, Marie Lane P’84, ’92, and Sigfried Heiles ’64, P’04. I am grateful to have worked with Brother Jim Smith St.M’60 and Tony Coscia P’80, ’82 who have been integral members of the development program for many years. We saw the success of new parent and community events, led by head parent volunteers Dina and Frank Oswald ’14, Fran Gillen P’09,’12,’15, Kate Coen P’14,’16, G’14, Christy DeCrescenzo G’14, Maria and Paul Basile ’84, P’16, and Frank and Diana Carone G’14. Please also note the outstanding Clipper Fund, Reunion and Event Chairs listed in the Annual Report who worked so tirelessly to raise money for the Clipper Fund or to support a scholarship fund. It has been an honor and privilege to work with President Alesi and Xaverian’s talented Administration and Faculty. I welcome Vin Torti and Eileen Long Chelales to the development team and wish them the best of luck. While I am no longer on Xaverian’s staff, I hope to remain a part of Xaverian community - Once a Clipper, Always a Clipper. Most Sincerely,
Corinne M. King

M e m o r i a m In Memory of Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan St.M ’48 Upon the tragic death of Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan following a car accident in May, the Xaverian community offers a prayer of gratitude for his graced-filled life of service. Bishop Sullivan was taught by the Xaverian Brothers at St. Michael’s Diocesan High School and graduated in 1948. He later served on Xaverian’s Board of Trustees. The Bishop’s service to the Church, particularly with Catholic Charities, has touched countless lives and certainly helped to build the Kingdom of the God throughout Brooklyn and Queens.
In Memory of William O’Brien ’13 The Xaverian community mourns the untimely passing of William O’Brien, Class of 2013. William lost his life in an automobile accident this July in Texas. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire O’Brien family. Xaverian will host a memorial service in William’s honor this fall. Details are forthcoming.
In Memory of Brother Ronald Bonti, CFX Brother Ronald Bonti, CFX, a former teacher at Xaverian, passed away on March 14th. Born in Brooklyn, he was a graduate of St. Michael’s H.S., Sunset Park. He entered the Xaverian Brothers in September of 1949 and took the name Brother Vernon.
