A Message from the President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, In my role as President of Xaverian, I spend a great deal of time looking forward. I am acutely aware that each and every thing we do today to improve the lives of our students here at 7100 Shore Road has the potential to impact our community, our city, and the world at large in the years to come as we shape the leaders of the future. It is for this reason, alongside our Board of Trustees, that I continuously work toward achieving the goals laid out in our Strategic Plan which we began implementing in 2012. This plan ensures the promise of our future, continuation of our mission, and the success of our students. Let me, for a moment, look back and share with you some of the many successes which took place in all facets of student life during 2013-2014 at Xaverian. The class of 2014 was awarded scholarships totaling $23,279,608 and earned acceptances to elite colleges and universities, including Princeton, Cornell, UPenn, Notre Dame, Holy Cross, CUNY β Macaulay Honors, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Two members of the graduating class were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists, while another senior was the first in Xaverian history to receive a FIRST Robotics Scholarship from Stevens Institute of Technology. Seven members of the senior class led 49 juniors on a Kairos retreat in March, and six juniors traveled to Camden, NJ to take part in an immersion retreat at the Romero Center in January. Xaverian Athletics ended the year on top with the Clipper Varsity Baseball team winning the CHSAA championship and our nationally acclaimed music program, MAX (Music at Xaverian), continuing to excel with many performances around the city and state. Our middle school students continue to thrive, both academically and spiritually. As part of the annual History Day Competition, 11 projects moved on to the NY State Competition and one project made it to the National History Day Competition at the University of Maryland. As always, our graduating 8th graders produced an impressive list of high school acceptances, including Xaverian, Marymount High School, Convent of the Sacred Heart, and Regis High School. This year, Xaverian is proud to welcome 23 graduating Genesis young men to the incoming high school class of 2018! In May, I was proud to announce that Xaverian received a $1 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. Michael T. Strianese β74 which will bolster the growth of Xaverianβs STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program. Mr. Strianese is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of L-3, a global aerospace and national security company. He is a proud alumnus and credits the time at his alma mater for providing him with the educational and spiritual groundwork which has served as the bedrock of his success. Mr. Strianese was also nominated to serve on Xaverianβs Board of Trustees, a position he accepted with great enthusiasm. We are also incredibly proud to announce the appointment of several other new members of the Board of Trustees, including Chris Mullin β81, Advisor to the Owner and Chairman of the Sacramento Kings, five-time NBA All-Star, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, and Naismith Hall of Fame Inductee; Ed Gilligan β77, President of American Express Company; Steven Galetta, MD β75, Philip K. Moskowitz, MD Professor and Chair of Neurology at NYU Langone Medical Center; and Cara Macksoud, a prominent equity trader and risk manager who was the youngest woman to be given membership to trade on the NYSE. Cara is a member of our Genesis middle schoolβs class of 1992. As you can see, this is truly a transformative time in Xaverianβs history. Because of the talent, dedication, and generosity of our faculty, staff, board members, and alumni, the student body at Xaverian receives an education of the mind, body, and spirit that is second to none. Again, I thank you for your time and support of our mission. Sincerely,
Robert B. Alesi β78 President Xaverian, Winter 2015 1

Xaverian Welcomes Five New Members to Board of Trustees On September 23, 2014, Xaverianβs President, Robert B. Alesi β78, together with Brother Lawrence Harvey, CFX, proudly announced the addition of five influential new members to Xaverianβs Board of Trustees. The new trustees are Chris Mullin β81, Advisor to the Owner and Chairman of the Sacramento Kings, five-time NBA AllStar, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee; Ed Gilligan β77, President of American Express Company; Michael T. Strianese β74, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of L-3; Steven Galetta, MD β75, Chair of Neurology at NYU Langone Medical Center; and Cara A. Macksoud, an equity trader and risk manager who is a member of Xaverianβs Genesis middle school programβs class of 1992. βThe addition of such prominent new board members is yet another successful step in ensuring the promise of Xaverianβs future,β says President Alesi. βThe range of experience that each 4 www.xaverian.org
Board member brings to the table is truly remarkable. Perhaps even more impressive than their professional pedigrees are Chris Mullin, Ed Gilligan, Michael Strianese, Steven Galetta, and Cara Macksoudβs proven track records of making a difference in the lives of others. I canβt think of a better group of professionals with whom to work in continuing the implementation of Xaverianβs Strategic Plan, which calls for, in part, a dedicated wing for the middle school, a new school chapel, cutting-edge science labs, a new school entrance, and further enhancements to our state-of-the-art auditorium.β After achieving prominence while playing basketball at Xaverian, Chris Mullin β81 was recruited by the legendary Hall of Fame coach, Lou Carnesecca, to play for St. Johnβs University. A threetime Big East Player of the Year (1983-85), Chris led St. Johnβs to the 1985 Final Four and its first No. 1 ranking since 1951. His
college career culminated with an Olympic gold medal in 1984. In 1985, Chris was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round with the seventh pick in the NBA Draft. A five-time NBA All-Star, Chris was a member of the 1992 Dream Team, where he won a second Olympic gold medal. Chris was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame that same year. In 2012, the Golden State Warriors retired Chrisβ number. His famous No. 17 now hangs in the rafters at Golden Stateβs Oracle Arena. Chris, who currently serves as Advisor to the Owner and Chairman of the Sacramento Kings, was the recipient of the 2013 Spirit of Xaverian Award, and is proud to be joining the Board of Trustees, saying, βThe support and education that I received while at Xaverian served as a solid foundation for all of my future success. I think it is so important to give back and to take care of the students that will be tomorrowβs leaders. As a proud member of the Board of Trustees, I pledge to do whatever I can to preserve and promote the tradition of educational excellence that embodies Xaverian.β As President of the American Express Company, Ed Gilligan β77, is responsible for the companyβs global consumer, small business services, merchant services and network services businesses. Ed is a member of the Operating Committee, which is responsible for developing the strategic direction for American Express and determining policies affecting the company overall. During his tenure, he has led numerous M&A efforts for the company including a large commercial card portfolio acquisition, a multitude of business travel acquisitions, investments and divestitures. Most recently, heβs been a key player in positioning American Express as a leader in digital commerce, brokering partnerships with digital and social media platforms like Facebook, Foursquare, and Twitter. In addition to Xaverian, Ed is currently on the Boards of Directors of Concur Technology, the Fancy, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Upon being appointed to Xaverianβs Board of Trustees, Mr. Gilligan said, βAs the challenges in the world increase, so do the opportunities for making a difference. I want to do what I can to make sure young people have the same opportunities I had to succeed. Xaverian was a big part of preparing me for the future, and this is a small way that I can pay it forward.β
Michael T. Strianese β74 is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of L-3, a global aerospace and national security company with 2013 sales of $12.6 billion that employs approximately 48,000 people worldwide. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Aerospace Industries Association and was also named to Defense Newsβ β100 Most Influential People in U.S. Defenseβ list. Mr. Strianese, who gifted Xaverian with a $1 million donation establishing the βMichael T. Strianese β74 STEM Program at Xaverianβ in May 2014, shared his enthusiasm regarding joining the Board, saying, βI am honored to join Xaverianβs Board of Trustees. I look forward to the opportunity to help expand the
schoolβs very successful STEM initiative, which provides students with the tools to grow and achieve. Xaverian grads are grounded with an ethical foundation that enables and prepares them to build meaningful careers and productive lives. I am proud to take an active role in the future of this outstanding institution by helping train its next generation of innovators.β
Steven Galetta, MD β75, who serves as Philip K. Moskowitz, MD Professor and Chair of Neurology at NYU Langone Medical Center, is a nationally recognized leader in neurology, neuro-ophthalmology, and medical education. He is a prolific researcher and is the principal investigator for several notable clinical trials that examine strategies and potential roles for early therapy in MS. Often noted for his abilities as an educator and mentor, Dr. Galetta has received nearly 50 teaching awards and has been consistently recognized by multiple periodicals as a top clinician. Upon being appointed to Xaverianβs Board of Trustees, Dr. Galetta said, βIβm very excited to the join the Board of Trustees at Xaverian. It is a privilege to give back to a school that has consistently met the challenge to provide innovative education to train the future leaders of our society.β
Cara A. Macksoud, a member of Xaverianβs Genesis middle school programβs class of 1992, has served as a prominent trader and risk manager at such notable firms as Spear, Leeds and Kellogg, Bear Hunter, and Prebon Tullet. She was the youngest woman to be given membership to trade on the NYSE. In addition to Xaverianβs Board of Trustees, Cara also sits on the Board of The Catalog for Giving and is the proud mother of five children. Ms. Macksoud expressed her enthusiasm regarding joining the Board, saying, βI attribute much of my success to the Genesis program and I am thrilled to join the Board of Trustees at Xaverian so that I can help others have the same experience.β Xaverianβs entire Board of Trustees extends a warm welcome to the new Board members. Brother Lawrence Harvey, CFX, Chairman of the Board, said, βThe motto of the Xaverian Brothers, βConcordia Res Parvae Crescunt,β or, βIn Harmony Small Things Grow,β certainly rings true in the growth of Xaverianβs Board of Trustees. Each and every year, the board makes great strides in advancing the mission of Theodore Ryken, which was to provide our youth with the highest quality education rooted in Christian values. The professional experience that these new Board members bring with them is exceptional, and I look forward to working with them to continue to advance the goals that are laid out in our vision for Xaverianβs future.β To access full biographies of each member of Xaverianβs Board of Trustees, please visit: www.xaverian.org/boardoftrustees

Xaverian Announces $1 Million Gift In Support of STEM Education Program On May 21st, 2014, President Robert Alesi β78 announced that Xaverian received a $1 million gift in support of its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program. Mr. and Mrs. Michael T. Strianese β74 donated the transformative gift to bolster the growth of Xaverianβs STEM program, which was established in 2013 through a partnership with Project Lead the Way, and will be named βThe Michael T. Strianese β74 STEM Program at Xaverian.β βThis is an extraordinary time in Xaverianβs history,β noted President Alesi. βXaverian opened in 1957 with its roots strongly grounded in Science and Mathematics education. With this remarkable gift from Mr. and Mrs. Strianese, Xaverian is moving forward by offering a 21st Century Science and Math curriculum. Our goal is to be the premier Catholic school in New York State offering a comprehensive STEM program for students in grades 6-12, and this gift will help us implement our vision of what Catholic education in the state can and should be.β Michael T. Strianese is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of L-3, a global aerospace and national security company with 2013 sales of $12.6 billion that employs approximately 48,000 people worldwide. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Aerospace Industries Association and was also named to Defense Newsβ β100 Most Influential People in U.S. Defenseβ list. He is a proud graduate of Xaverianβs class of 1974, and credits his time at his alma mater for providing him with the educational and spiritual groundwork which has served as the bedrock of his success. Mr. Strianese said, βXaverian gave me the academic foundation and experience that prepared me for leadership roles throughout my career. Our country is facing a crisis due to the decline of students in STEM-related fields. Scientific and technological advancements drive innovation, jobs and economic growth. To maintain our competitive edge, we need academically gifted students with the expertise needed to drive our economy and help protect our nation. Through this program, Xaverian provides its students with the necessary resources to succeed, and I am honored to help the school produce future leaders in our industry.β The highly acclaimed STEM program offers project and problembased learning through hands-on classroom experiences. Students create, design, and build to solve problems, while being exposed to the industries where these skill sets are needed most. The U.S. Department of Education projects an astounding increase in the percentage of STEM jobs from 2010 to 2020, with the needs for biomedical engineers jumping 62%, medical scientists up 36%, and systems software developers up 32%. With the establishment of the Michael T. Strianese β74 STEM Program, Xaverian will offer its Genesis middle school students introductory classes in engineering through its Gateway to Technology curriculum, and high school students will have the opportunity to select a sequence of courses in either engineering or biomedical sciences.

A Message from the Principal Dear Friends, When reflecting on the last few years at Xaverian, I canβt get Dylanβs iconic song The Times They Are A-Changinβ out of my head. My favorite lines from this masterpiece are: βThen you better start swimminβ or youβll sink like a stone, for the times they are a-changin.ββ Truer words were never spoken (or, rather, sung)! This line was compelling in 1964 when the song was originally released, but it has stood the test of time and has come to serve as a great source of inspiration to this day. We, here at Xaverian, are blessed with a President and Board of Trustees that recognize the importance of maintaining our position as leading innovators in the realm of educational technology. We became one of the first schools in the country to go 1:1, with each student and teacher being equipped with an iPad, but we knew we could not stop there. Thanks to the intelligence, dedication and innovation of the faculty, especially Ms. Stephanie Lorenzo, our Faculty Advisor for Instructional Technology, we enhance the classroom experience for our students in new ways each and every day using the iPad. We have also made great strides in bringing a competitive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math curriculum to our students, complete with a newly enhanced, state-of-the-art STEM lab. Faculty members now have MacBook Airs in addition to their iPads, allowing for seamless connectivity and engagement with invaluable classroom resources, such as Twitter, Edmodo, and Apple TV. My friends, it is a brave new world, and we, at Xaverian, are fully committed to helping shape independent, moral leaders infused with a Catholic imagination who will serve as the promise of a beautiful future. For the times they are indeed a-changin, and I promise you all that we will never stand still and passively watch the changes unfold around us. We will continue to deliver dynamic, innovative, and faith-filled education for todayβs students, who will be tomorrowβs engineers, scientists, priests, teachers, artists, doctors, and members of the armed services. It is an awesome responsibility, but one for which, we all, as educators, thank God every day. With much gratitude,

n Saturday, June 7th, 193 seniors and their families assembled at Brooklyn Collegeβs Walt Whitman Auditorium for Xaverianβs 54th Commencement Exercises. The Pipe and Drum Corps artfully handled the Call to Order, playing a celebratory medley. The graduates then processed proudly into the auditorium to a rousing rendition of Pomp and Circumstance provided by the members of Xaverianβs Symphonic, Concert and Select Bands. Following the processional of the graduates, Principal Dcn. Kevin McCormack offered a greeting and Xaverianβs Chaplain, Rev. Sean Suckiel, offered the invocation. The Senior Chorus Members of the Class of 2014 sang the National Anthem and Patrick Coen β14 (appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy) presented a touching Welcome Address. Patrick reflected on how Xaverian has provided him with an educational experience paved not only with the support of excellent role models, but also strong encouragement of faith development. He said, βXaverian was the best thing that ever happened to my faith. My four years here taught me what it really means to be a Catholic, to have a strong relationship with God, and to not be ashamed about that. I donβt think there are many places where teenage guys donβt feel embarrassed about looking for God in their lives, but that was the blessing we were given here. Xaverian gave each of us the opportunity to explore our faith, at our own pace, however we felt most comfortable about it. Thatβs incredibly important for teenagers who are learning about who they are, and how to live their faith.β Following Patrickβs speech, special awards were given to members of the Class of 2014. The awards given were as follows: Kevin Savarese, Academic Excellence; Daniel Loud, General Excellence; Anthony Sigismondi, Scholar Athlete; Eric Cundari, XBSS Award; David Ruiz, Bro. Hugo Hurst, CFX Senior Involvement Award; Joseph Astarita, Outstanding Academic Achievement; Michael Guzman, Outstanding Student Athlete; Patrick Coen, Principalβs Award; Joseph Principato, Presidentβs Award; Lorenzo Vaccaro, General Excellence Award for the Music Program; Christopher Cali, Xaverian Service Award; Matthew Bramante, Christian Gentleman Award; and Nicolas Tritto, Xaverian Spirit Award. Prior to addressing the graduates, President Robert Alesi β78 presented a plaque to the Zambrano family in honor of their mother, Carmen, who passed away in May. The plaqueβs message honors Carmenβs memory and reads: The entire Xaverian community commends the Zambrano familyβs commitment to Catholic education in the tradition of the Xaverian Brothers. The memory of Mrs. Carmen Zambrano lives on through her sons, Giancarlos β01, Eric β02, Jovani β09, Nicholas β11, and Evan β14, who bring Godβs love to all whom they encounter. Following President Alesiβs address to the Class of 2014, the diplomas were conferred to the graduates. The Commencement Address was then Hon. Matthew DβEmic β70 delivered by the

Honorable Matthew DβEmic β70, Administrative Judge for Criminal Matters, N.Y. State Supreme Court, Kings County. Judge DβEmic, an esteemed member of Xaverianβs Board of Trustees, urged graduates to use action, courage, and love to change the world that they touch. He said, βYour path will not be direct, your future will not be uncomplicated, and your experiences will often not confirm what you know, but change it. This is how we grow. You, here, on your graduation day, is proof that your parents and your teachers have changed the world they have touchedβ¦ The people who make the biggest mistakes are those who do nothing because they can only do a little. The difference between doing something and doing nothing is everything.β The farewell address was delivered by Daniel Loud (attending University of Pennsylvania), who received the distinct honor of being named valedictorian. Daniel spoke to his classmates about the unique nature of being a βXaverian Man.β He said, ββ¦being a Xaverian Man means weβre special. It means we use our talents, whatever they are, for the good of others. It means we stand up for what we believe in, that weβre compassionate, honest, hard-working, and, through and through, good-hearted people.β Following the benediction, which was offered by the Very Rev. Eugene N. Pappas, the celebration ended with the Pipe and Drum Corps performing a marching medley.
The Class of 2014 also gathered the evening before graduation on Friday, June 6, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to celebrate Baccalaureate Mass. Highlights of the evening included a welcome address by Joseph Principato (attending Cornell University), a special video slideshow of the students which portrayed them over the past four years, a gorgeous Communion Meditation of an acoustic version of βAve Mariaβ performed by members of MAX (Music at Xaverian), and a reflection offered by Matthew Bramante β14 (attending Villanova University). Xaverianβs Class of 2014 was awarded scholarships totaling $23,279,608 and its members earned acceptance to a rich array of colleges and universities nationwide, including Princeton University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, CUNY-Macaulay Honors College, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and U.S. Naval Academy, to name a few.

averianβs middle school, Genesis, celebrated commencement exercises for the Class of 2014 on Saturday, June 14th. The ceremony featured an invocation by Joseph Iuni Gβ14, a welcome from President Robert Alesi β78, a Valedictory Address by Alienor Manteau Gβ14, and Salutatory Addresses by three students who shared the honor due to maintaining matching GPAs of 98.2, Kathleen Coen Gβ14, Caroline Ardizzone Gβ14, and Emily Ronan Gβ14, and a Passing of Tradition Ceremony for the Student Council. Perhaps the most touching part of the day took place when students presented their parents with palanca letters expressing their deep gratitude and love. Principal Dcn. Kevin McCormack served as the Keynote Speaker and 19 awards were given to deserving students. There were 51 students in the Class

Dean of Genesis Patricia McEvoy, said, βThe young men and women of the Class of 2014 are remarkable representatives of the Genesis standard of excellence. I am very proud of their many accomplishments and I know they have bright and rewarding futures.β The Genesis Class of 2014 and their families also gathered on June 12th at St. Ephremβs Church to celebrate a Graduation Mass. The mass was followed
by a special dinner and dance for the students at Gennaroβs Catering Hall in Dyker Heights.

Xaverian middle schoolers will undoubtedly continue to be successful in the History Day Competition, as this yearβs 7th graders already participated in a MiniHistory Fair in June 2014! The projects the historians-in-training produced were truly impressive, as was the level of poise the students exhibited upon presenting their research to administrators, faculty members and other Genesis students.
Mock Trial Impresses at St. Johnβs University School of Law The Genesis Mock Trial team and its moderator, Mr. Thomas Snyder β06, once again had a successful showing at the Catholic Middle School Mock Trial Program at St. Johnβs University School of Law on May 17th. After months of preparation, the group matched wits and legal knowledge with Catholic middle school students from around the city and displayed quick-thinking, masterful teamwork and great enthusiasm for their roles.

Kairos Offers Profound Spiritual Experience for Xaverian Community Xaverian held its first Kairos Retreat in Huntington, Long Island from March 18th to March 21st. Kairos β which is Greek for βGodβs timeβ β is a unique, four-day retreat offered at hundreds of high schools and colleges across the country. This retreat encourages the boys to examine who they are, and to better understand their relationships with others and with God. Seven members of the class of 2014 (Dean Gelsobello, Michael Conenna, Michael Castellano, Patrick Coen, Christopher Cali, Joseph Principato and Emmanuel Casie), who participated in the Kairos retreat in November 2013 with St. Johnβs Shrewsbury, worked alongside Ms. Schneider, Mr. Dormer, Mr. Tinervia β97, Mrs. Pacheco, Mr. Maloney, Dcn. Amore β80 and Fr. Sean in leading 49 juniors and seniors during Xaverianβs first Kairos retreat. Student leader, Christopher Cali β14, described the retreat, saying,
Xaverian Students Participate in Urban Challenge Retreat in Camden, NJ Nine Xaverian juniors and seniors traveled to Camden, NJ to participate in the Romero Centerβs Urban Challenge Program, a service-learning, immersion retreat experience, from October 23 to October 26. βIt was truly an amazing spiritual journey and learning experience for everyone involved. This experience has allowed us to grow closer together as a Xaverian community and family. What made this retreat even more special was the way that it brought together kids from all different parts of the school and encouraged them to forge unexpected friendships.β Ms. Schneider reflected on the organizational process behind
Campus Minister John Dormer and Faculty Member Brendan Gorman β04, stayed for three nights at the Romero Center and participated in various service projects, including working in a soup kitchen, organizing supplies in a food bank distribution center, planting trees, and visiting disabled adults in a group home. The group also spent one day living on $3 per person in order to learn how the poorest residents in the State of New Jersey feed themselves and their families. This unique, service experience had a profound effect on the students that participated. Antonio Franciosa β15 reflected on the retreat, saying, βBeing able to attend the retreat to Camden

initiating the retreat, saying, βBeing able to headstart this retreat program has been an honor. Kairos is a powerful retreat that really touches the lives of the faculty involved just as much as it reaches the students.β Joseph Principato β14, another student leader, said, βThe retreat was a beautiful and moving experience. Itβs an amazing feeling to know I had such a positive impact on the faith of my Xaverian brothers.β

was an experience unlike any other. It allowed me to see the hardship present in peoples lives. Sure, poverty can be seen on television, but experiencing it first-hand is truly an eye-opening experience. Never does one realize the full extent of hunger, violence and general poverty until it is witnessed by oneβs own eyes. Helping these people in need was amazing and left a lasting mark on all of us. As a whole, the retreat made me realize all the things that I take for granted on a regular basis that these people could hardly even dream of having. It taught me the importance of service more than any lesson or television program ever could.β Similarly, Albert Connelly β15, was profoundly affected by the retreat, saying, βGoing to Camden was an eyeopening experience. To hear about the issues that the people of Camden are dealing with is different from seeing them first-hand. I had the unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of what life is like for the thousands of people in the city, and it reminded me of the the things that we can sometimes take for granted. One of the things that I took away from the trip was that we need to be active. The only way that the situation in Camden can be improved is for those of us who are privileged enough to have a voice to use it, whether it be through politics, service, or simply telling others.β

Internship Program Allows Students to Reach New Heights Now in its fourth year, the Internship Program at Xaverian (IPAX) is a dynamic opportunity for rising juniors in the Honors Program to learn about a wide variety of careers in hands-on, real-world experiences with talented professionals. Not only do students gain valuable work experience and networking skills, but they also greatly enhance their resumes for college applications. Quite often, students write unique and engaging college essays based on their experiences in their internships. Designed to help students make well informed decisions about their future majors in college and investigate potential career paths, IPAX places students with mentors (who are quite often Xaverian alumni) in their desired professional areas of interest. Internship Director Mrs. Ana Loposky reflects on the importance of the program, saying, βOne of the things about IPAX that I think is just so wonderful is how it expands the horizons of our students. All of a sudden, they start thinking about how they will take everything theyβve learned in the classroom and apply it in a real professional setting. At the end of the program, theyβve gained not only great work experience, but also a reference from a professional with whom they can continue to network.β
What the Students Are Saying βMy internship in civil engineering took my academic experience to unimaginable heights - literally. I was able travel to the top of the Verrazano Bridge and examine its suspension cables and beams up close. This was just one of many truly unbelievable Randy Antoun β15 (above, atop the Verrazano experiences I took Bridge), Northeast Structural Steel, Inc. part in through my (Mentors: Kevin Sheerin & Dan Mallen, Project internship. I was Engineers) actually doing real engineering work involving physics and algebraic geometry. Next summer, I will be working Northeast Structural Steel Inc. again, in a paid position, as the youngest engineer on their job sites.β

βDuring my internship, I networked and built relationships that will last me a long time. Working as a Case Assistant Intern truly opened the door for me to consider potentially becoming a lawyer when I get older. Working with caring people, tackling interesting tasks, and being in the middle of New York City Christian Bono β15, with almost anything Law Internship with Kirkland & Ellis LLP and everything at my (Mentor: Christopher Torrente β90, Partner) fingertips is something I was very honored to have the opportunity to experience. Overall, my internship at Kirkland was potentially the best six weeks of my life and I loved it so much that I decided to go back and work for six days over Christmas break.β βOne of the most important things I learned during my internship with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is that in order to be successful in your professional life, you have to be completely comfortable speaking to and interacting Jesse Slevin β15 (above), with others. I really Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce enjoyed my time at (Mentor: Carlo A. Scissura β88, President) the Chamber, and will definitely take what I learned with me as I determine my future career path.β βMy mechanical engineering internship was an amazing experience. My mentor, Keith Frerichs β00, Senior Project Manager for WTC Redevelopment with Ritvik Taneja β15 (above, right), Jones Lang LaSalle, Jones Lang LaSalle showed me the robots (Mentor: Keith Frerichs β00, above, left) used to investigate flood damage at WTC. He also took me to the oculus, which was under construction, to describe various construction processes. These included applying computer designs to real life construction, coordinating different engineering teams, and meeting financial deadlines.β

been an integral part of my sonsβ academic success and has laid the groundwork for successful college internships and professional employment opportunities.β Judi Fitzgerald Pβ13,β11
Nicholas Terzulli β15 with mentor, Dr. Bertelle, Internal Medicine
βInterning with Dr. Bertelle was an amazing and eye-opening experience. I was able to shadow Dr. Bertelle and learn how he examines his patients, which helped me to understand the process of what a doctor must to do to correctly diagnose a patient with a certain illness. The internship opportunity that Xaverian provided me with made me realize the amount of love I have for science and, ultimately, helped me decide that I want to continue on in the medical field with my studies.β
What the Parents Are Saying βOne of the most enriching aspects of my sonβs time at Xaverian was his Internship at Greenman Pederson Engineering. Patrick (Class of 2014) and another student were mentored by a Partner there who provided a fascinating insight into the daily workings of a major Engineering firm. They gained exclusive access to a high security project to protect the Brooklyn Bridge from terrorist attacks. They toured the construction site at the World Trade Center. They gained insights into the profession of Engineering that were possible from Xaverianβs access to this program. After each visit, my son would talk for days about how interesting it was. The Internship experience made my son more marketable as an applicant to colleges. It also helped him discern that Engineering was a path he wanted to pursue. He is presently majoring in Engineering at the United States Naval Academy.β-
βAs a parent of two young men who have taken part in the Internship Program, I feel that IPAX is an incredibly important part of the Xaverianβs Honors experience. Both of my sons had amazing experiences doing their internships. One interned in a production office for broadway shows. He was able to share ideas and understand what goes on in this environment on a day-to-day basis. My other son was able to intern with an accomplished musician and participated in an actual jazz performance with his band. Both my sons would come home from their internships with news of how their day went, chock full of information they could attribute to the career paths they were choosing. The experience was truly invaluable for each of my boys, from the understanding of what a professional job consists of, to the responsibily of getting up and heading to work in the morning, as well as being accountable and being involved with a functional work place. Xaverian was able to offer my sons an opportunity that I could not have assisted them with. The internship program was able to help them in their future endeavors, and for that I am forever grateful!β Margaret Rucci Pβ13
What Mentors Are Saying βThe Xaverian Internship Program goes far beyond simply giving students a glimpse into the working world. This program presents the young men of Xaverian with actual real-world, real-life work experiences and challenges them to be proactive, engaged and quickthinking - all traits they will keep with them as they move on to the career of their choice. Our Xaverian intern, Matthew Drohan, learned far more than phone etiquette and the proper way to fill out an Excel spreadsheet at his internship with Futures In Education and Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens. He was exposed to the ins and outs of the nonprofit world both at the office and at large-scale fundraisers, where he experienced last-minute changes of plans and surprise schedule shifts, as is the nature of events. Matthew exemplified the ability to think on his feet and maintain a professional manner no matter what task was thrown his way. We look forward to working with Xaverian students again, as we feel that their dedication far exceeds a desire to write βinternshipβ on a resume or college application.β Nick Vendikos β87, Genesis Parent β14 Director of Development, The Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens, and Futures in Education
Kathleen Coen Pβ16, β14, Gβ14
βAs the parent of two Xaverian graduates (Kevin β11 and Thomas β13), I have seen first-hand how the internship program at Xaverian serves to prepare students for success in college and beyond. This program provides students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in the industry relating to their field of study, and it affords them the ability to see how their studies are applied in the real world. The value of listing a high school internship on a college resume is immeasurable. The internship program at Xaverian has
βSt. Francis College is proud to serve as an educational partner with Xaverian High School and IPAX. The program gives Xaverian students real-life experiences that prepare them for the real-world. Each Xaverian student who has interned at the College has been an instrumental part of our Franciscan community. They are hardworking, organized, detail-oriented, and dedicated young men who understand the importance of serving the community.β Mr. Robert Oliva β00 Director of Community Partnership and Special Events, St. Francis College

City Champs!
Xaverian Snags Catholic League Championship Just minutes after his Xaverian Clippers had swept Archbishop Molloy in a championship double header, 5-3 and 6-4, to win the New York City CHSAA βAAβ baseball crown, head Coach Frank Del George took a moment to reflect on how his team had managed to come out on top. It was just days after rain had forced the games to be pushed back two days, and more than a week after his charges had dropped their first playoff game and begun the nearly impossible climb from the losersβ bracket, winning six straight elimination games in the process. βChemistry. These kids never would have been able to 18
do this if they hadnβt been so supportive of each other,β said Del George. βAll season long, the upperclassmen took the younger players under their wing; there were no rivalries. There were all genuinely happy for each otherβs success, which was critical to our success. We couldnβt have done this without each and every one of them.β Xaverian took the field needing two victories over Molloy, the winnerβs bracket champ. Del George gave the ball to Rob Amato β15 in the first game, and the junior lefty did not disappoint, keeping the Clippers in the game before being removed in the fifth trailing 3-1. Jeff Manzi β14 followed, and the senior right-hander worked out of bases-loaded situations in both the fifth and sixth, giving teammate Chris Nierva β15 all the time he needed to bring the Clippers back. Nierva tied the game with a two-run homer in the fifth, then doubled home the winning runs to send Xaverian into the deciding game. βI know Iβm capable of it,β Nierva said. βItβs
just a blessing that I was able to show it in such a big game.β Anthony Sigismondi β14, coming off two brilliant performances, took the mound in the second game. Despite a dominant outing, the senior found himself on the wrong side of a 1-0 score as Xaverian came to bat in the fifth. Brian Watters β15 drove in a run with a ground ball. Chris Amato β14 and Joe Vitacco β15 singled in a run apiece and Anthony Scotti β15 had a sacrifice fly to put Xaverian ahead, 5-1. Nick Meola β15βs double in the sixth, and an RBI by Phoenix Hernandez β16 gave the Clippers a 6-1 lead. Sigismondi stumbled a bit in the sixth, allowing three runs,
before slamming the door on the Stanners with a 1-2-3 seventh that gave Xaverian the title. For Athletic Director Anthony Mancusi β96, the win was gratifying on a number of levels. βThese kids are everything we want Xaverian students to be,β said Mancusi. βTheyβre leaders. They set an example for the whole program. As great as tonightβs win is, my best memory of them came last night, when our JV team lost the championship game. Not only was the entire varsity squad at the game, they were in the dugout consoling their younger brothers as soon as it ended. That kind of spirit and camaraderie is what makes them special.β
Triple Play for Xaverian Student Athletes on Signing Day While the first cold snap of the season had the wind whistling outside, there was a bit of Spring fever in the office of Xaverian President, Bob Alesi, on November 17th, 2014 as varsity baseball players Rob Amato β15, Nick Meola β15, and Anthony Scotti β15 signed NCAA national letters of intent. Each played an enormous role in the Clippersβ run to a CHSAA Championship last June. βIt is always a great day when we can celebrate the talents of our young men,β said Alesi β78. βToday is extra special, though, because they are being recognized as much for their achievements in the classroom as for their accomplishments on the ballfield.β Scotti, a hard-hitting third baseman, accepted a scholarship to Seton Hall University where he plans to study Sports
Management. Amato and Meola will join forces at Queens College, where Meola will pursue a degree in Business while Amato will study Physical Therapy . βWe couldnβt be prouder of these kids,β said Athletic Director Anthony Mancusi β96, himself a former baseball player for the Clippers. βTheyβre going to great schools because they are committed to every aspect of our program. They study hard, play hard and support their teammates in every way. They are the epitome of what a student-athlete should be.β Head Coach Frank Del George concurred. βThese young men are tremendous examples of what Xaverian is all about. They work hard, excel at everything they do and, because of that, serve as great role models for the younger guys in our program.β

From the Sports Desk B AS EBA LL The Xaverian baseball season was a big success with the Varsity capturing the CHSAA championship! Coach Frank DelGeorgeβs Clippers defeated Archbishop Molloy twice to clinch the schoolβs third city title in the last seven years. Varsity ace Anthony Sigismondi β14 pitched the clinching game to earn playoff MVP honors. Read more about the championship on page 18. The Junior Varsity reached the title game by stunning heavy favorite St. Joseph by the Sea in the semi-finals. B OWL ING The JV and Varsity Bowling teams finished their season on December 15, falling short of qualifying for the city tournament by losing in the BrooklynQueens Semi-Finals 2 games to 1. They finished in third place in each league. JV was lead by Nico Brancato β18, who won high game for the season with a 246. Varsity was lead by Captain John Brancato β15. He also captured the league high game with a 269. Although the team will have to replace seniors John Brancato, Sammy Hassan, and Chris Immiti, emerging talent from Kenny Otten β16 and Domenick Raphael β17 will ensure a successful 2015 season. W R E S T L IN G With a lot of hard work, the Xaverian Wrestling team has made great strides in becoming a very competitive program again. Captain Ronaldo Rodriquez β15 won the 138 lb bracket in the annual Dave Ironman Wrestling Tournament Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Monsignor Farrell High School. In three of his matches that day, Ronaldo defeated a third place NY State Champion in the quarters, a second place New Jersey Prep champion wrestler in the semi-finals, and the nationally-ranked sixth place current champion in the finals! S W I MMING The Xaverian Varsity Swim Team had another outstanding season. The team finished the regular season with a record 20 www.xaverian.org
of 10-1, winning its division and moving up to the top division of the CHSAA. After the regular season was completed, the team went on to win its third Novice Championship in a row and fourth in the last five years. The team also set a school record by having 21 swimmers qualify for the City Championship. Konstantin Lomeyko β16 broke the 500 freestyle record for the school, while Patrick Coenβ14 won the coachβs award and Ryan Ward β14 won his third straight MVP award. HOC KE Y At the start of last Hockey season, the Clippers felt confident after losing just two senior starters from the previous season. Team Captain, goaltender Kurt Sullivan β14, was named league MVP and was featured in a fantastic article in The Tablet. After a slow start, the team hit its stride just in time to secure the fourth and final playoff spot. The Clippers ultimately lost the deciding game of that series, but are looking forward to taking another step in the 2014-2015 season with a number of experienced players returning. G OLF Xaverian Varsity Golf team had a very successful season, placing third in the division. The juniors and seniors played strong throughout the season. Congratulations are in order for Tim Mooney β16 and Peter Caleca β14, who boasted stellar performances. B ASKET B A LL As usual, the Xaverian basketball teams will compete in the CHSAA βAAβ league, which is traditionally one of the most competitive high school basketball
leagues in the country. The 14-15 Varsity squad is expected to be one of the better teams in NYC. Last yearβs captain and lone departing starter, Rob Rossiter β14, is currently attending Ursinus College in Pennsylvania on a full academic and basketball scholarship. The balance of this yearβs team is experienced. Perhaps the teamβs most talented players are 6β5β swing-man Sayon Charles β15 and 6β6β Najee Larcher β15, both of whom are sure to be major college recruits. The team traveled over Christmas break to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the prestigious Cactus Jam Classic, returning home with a 3-0 record. The team produced a huge win of 51-49 over the previously undefeated Christ the King on January 4. Najee Larcher β15 and Nyonty Wisseh β16 led the way to the victory, with 19 points and 18 points, respectively. Visit the Xaverian website, or the CHSAA League website www.leaguelineup.com/ nychsaabasketball for in-season updates. In Clipper basketball alumni news, Xaverian Hall of Famer Tom Burns β83 returned to the sidelines to pilot the JV basketball team to a strong playoff run last season. Former Clipper guard and Boston Celtic assistant Mike Longobardi β90 is now an assistant coach of the Phoenix Suns, while NBA and Xaverian Hall of Famer Chris Mullin β81 was promoted as a special advisor to the President of the Sacramento Kings and joined Xaverianβs Board of Trustees. This past March Xaverian inducted two former players into the schoolβs Hall of Fame. The starting backcourt of the Diocesan Championship team in 2001, Chris Alesi β01 and Lou Karis β01, were both honored at the 2014 Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Xaverian.
From the Sports Desk VO LLE YBA LL The Xaverian Varsity Volleyball team survived a regular season filled with matches that featured many nail-biting finishes to earn, once again, a hardfought berth in the CHSAA playoffs, before dropping a 3-1 quarterfinal heartbreaker to St. Edmundβs. The team was the epitome of teamwork both on and off the court. Michael Castellano β14 (Leagueβs Best Setter), Pat Coen β14, Connor McHale β14, Rob Toye β14, and Ryan Verano β14 led the team to some exciting victories throughout the season, along with Nick Kouveris β15, Anthony Scotto β15, and John Boyle β17, who averaged 8 kills per match. Returning to a very promising next season are Angelo Russo β16, Chris Sammon β16, Richie Cardy β16, John Cashman β17, Gavin Thurlow β16, and Peter Geraci β16. L ACROS S E
The 2014 Lacrosse Team continued to build on the foundation that was set by the graduating class of 2013. The team was led by Captain Michael Conenna β14, recognized by US Lacrosse with the Bob Scott Award for his work in bringing Kairos to Xaverian, Team MVP Malik Griffith β14, and leading goal scorer Alex Seabaugh β14. The new, trap zone defense was anchored by Andrew Lauro β15, John Freeze β14, and Joe Nugent β14. Led by second year head coach Tomas Gonzalez β92, the coaching staff was made up entirely of Xaverian Alumni, including Jeremy Mangano β12, Valerio Auguste β13, and Chris DeMartino β06. The season was highlighted by another victory for the Clippers in the Xaverian-Xavier Lacrosse Classic at Aviator. 2015 looks
even brighter with returning seniors Paul Schwarz β15, Jay Stauble β15, Eddie Wilkinson β15, and Christian Bono β15. The junior class is just as strong featuring John Hart β16, James Vega β16, Tomas Gonzalez Jr. β16, and Michael Rosetti β16. The interest from this yearβs incoming freshman class looks like it will only add to the excitement the sport of lacrosse has created at Xaverian, and ensure its future success. SOCC ER Varsity Soccer had a solid season, winning its first game of the playoffs with a 2-0 shutout over Regis. Christian Mollica β16 and Giuseppe Barone β16 supplied the scoring and Sean Heller β16 played a tremendous game in the net shutting down Regis, and moving the team into the quarterfinals. The Junior Varsity Soccer team defeated Iona Prep 5-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the playoffs. Balanced scoring gave the Clippers an early 3-0 lead with Chris Monti β17, Matt Shneyderman β18, and Giorgio Koufos β18 each scoring a goal, and with Iona Prep mounting a comeback. The program looks forward to building off this success next season! FOOTBA LL After ending its regular season with a 43-14 rout of Cardinal Spellman, the Xaverian Varsity Football team reached the CHSFL Class A Championship game for the second straight year. The Clippers won their semi-final contest with an 18-0 shutout over Cardinal Spellman behind three touchdowns from Brandon Peterson β16, including
a 48 yard option pass from receiver Garrett Murnan β15. It was the second straight week Peterson had reached the end zone three times. The defense held Spellman to just 100 yards of offense for the game. Zachary Salvato β15 had an interception, and Mike Marinelli β17 pressured the Spellman quarterback all day. The Clippers put up a solid fight against Fordham Prep for the Class-A title, but came up short. Clipper Fund 2013-2014 Now More Than Ever! For those of you who might remember, that was the slogan for President Nixonβs re-election campaign in 1972. And, politics aside, this phrase continues to ring true regarding philanthropic support for Xaverianβthe premier Upper School and Co-Educational Middle School in the Diocese of Brooklyn. By standards, 2013-14 was a great fund-raising year for the school. Through a transformative gift of $1 million made by Michael T. Strianese β74 and his wife, Alyson, Xaverian has established the Michael T. Strianese β74 STEM Program which will benefit students across all grades and curricula. Alumni, parents, and friends supported the annual Golf Classic, Spirit of Xaverian Gala, Fortune Auction, and other events. Support was received for the annual Clipper Fund and our Family of Funds, which allowed donors to select from a number of categories to make their unrestricted gifts. Many chose to double their gifts by using their companyβs matching gift programs. Others helped support scholarship and financial aid initiatives and others, because of their long and deep affection for Xaverian, included the school in their estate plans. All told, nearly $2.2 million was raised benefiting programs, scholarships and financial aidβultimately benefiting each and every student at 7100 Shore Road. Xaverianβs future is bright. Under the direction of the Board of Trustees and the inspirational leadership of President Bob Alesi β78 and Principal Deacon Kevin McCormack, Xaverian continues to go back to its roots of providing the finest Catholic middle and secondary education availableβanywhere. Under the guidance of Trustee and Advancement Committee Chair Bill Zucker β75 and the Advancement Committee, and other volunteers who believe deeply in Xaverianβs mission, we know that 2014-15 will be an even better year financially for the school and our students. We are indebted to the members of the Golf Committee, the Spirit of Xaverian Gala Committee, the Student Coordinating Council, and Parent Volunteers for all theyβve done and continue to do to help raise funds for the school. We recognize the generosity of time offered by members of our administration, faculty, staff, maintenance crew, and everyone who went above and beyond to help the Advancement Team prepare for special events, cultivation events, and alumni visits. We extend a very special βthank youβ to the Committee Members of the J. Meric Pessagno Scholarship Fund. Through their efforts, and through the generosity of an anonymous donor who will match each and every new gift made to the scholarship fund through June 30, 2015, up to a total of $50,000, more than $26,000 has been donated! If you were a student of Meric or would just like to see this challenge met, please make a gift! Lastly, itβs critical to remember ones heritage. Principal McCormack reminds our students that they stand on the βShoulders of Giants,β alumni who proudly represent Xaverian today. Before Xaverian, there was St. Michaelβs Diocesan High Schoolβthe school that would not die! All of us at Xaverian are grateful to the Michaelmen for their generous support, which this year totaled nearly $120,000! Thank you to all, especially Alumni President Tony Zupo β59 and Executive Secretary, Brother Jim Smith, C.F.X. β60. Now, more than ever, we ask for and need your continued support. If you can increase your level of giving, please consider doing so. If itβs been a while since youβve made a gift, please consider making a gift today at www.xaverian.org/donate. Itβs easy to do and will only take a few moments of your time. President Alesi and Principal McCormack have great vision and for them to see their vision fulfilled, they need and welcome the philanthropic support of all of usβtrustees, alumni, parents, administration, faculty and staff, and everyone for whom Xaverian holds a special place. Together, we can make 2014-15 an even greater year for Xaverian! May God continue to bless you and those you love, and may our efforts always be guided by the watchful eye of Our Lady of the Narrows.
