A Message from the President Dear Friends, Every once in a while, a moment happens in life that allows us to see things a little differently, perhaps more clearly than we may have before. I have been blessed with many such moments in my personal life, but, this past June, I was fortunate enough to experience such a moment, professionally, as I sat on stage at Brooklyn College during our most recent Commencement Exercises. Graduation is typically an exciting and somewhat emotional time as we celebrate the accomplishments of those adolescent boys who entered the halls of 7100 Shore Road four years earlier and who now walk across the stage as the young men who will soon disperse in many different directions and walk many different paths, yet still share a common Xaverian experience that I pray will help them to realize the fullest potential and purpose in their lives. This ceremony, in particular, was even more poignant than most as we all listened to Mr. Joseph DiMartino ’61, a member of Xaverian’s first graduating class, deliver the Commencement Address to the graduates of the Class of 2011, fifty years after his own graduation from Xaverian! One of the greatest challenges we face at Xaverian is to continually assess the ever changing needs of our students and to properly prepare them for the demands of college and beyond, while, at the same time, ensuring that they fully appreciate and experience the proud history and tradition of a Xaverian education rooted in the academic, physical, moral, and spiritual development of each student. As Mr. DiMartino spoke, he eloquently communicated to our graduates the value of his own Xaverian education and its impact on his life— personally as well as professionally. His message was warmly received by a graduating class that will be entering a world vastly different than Joe’s was fifty years ago. They will need

to compete in a global society, adapt to changing technology, and assimilate into a changing and more demanding workforce, but one which will reward ingenuity, creativity and, as always, hard work. I am confident that our graduates are as prepared today for the challenges that await them as their predecessors were fifty years ago, and for all the years in between. Xaverian has adapted well to the changing times. We remain at the forefront in providing our students with the best teachers, the latest technology, ongoing faculty professional development, and a demanding academic program that challenges every student to reach his potential. Additionally, we are a caring and nurturing community of faith that understands the fundamental call to live the Gospel message of Jesus, and to spread His message wherever life’s journey may lead. This, my friends, is the Xaverian experience which is alive and well and ready for the next fifty years of our history and beyond. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our alumni, friends and benefactors who have supported our school this past year, and our mission of providing a Catholic education— a Xaverian education—to the students we are proud to serve. I am humbled and forever grateful for your generosity. I ask for your prayers and continued support as we prepare for an exciting year ahead! There will be many new initiatives implemented in the coming months and years as we continue with our strategic planning process. I look forward to sharing them with you as they unfold. May God’s continued blessings be with you always. Peace,

Robert B. Alesi ’78, President

Celebrating 51Years of Xaverian Graduates “I would like to congratulate the 51st graduating class of Xaverian High School whose hard work and diligence is rewarded today. You have been given a solid foundation of an excellent value system by your family at home and your family at Xaverian. It is now up to you to continue to build on that foundation, but you should rest assured that it is solid. They sacrificed to give it to you, please don’t squander it... Our class had its 50th reunion a few weeks ago. We graduated 391 students, and we had over 100 at our reunion. Most had not been back to Xaverian since graduation. They came from Mexico, California,Arizona, and Colorado. They were surgeons, lawyers, educators, NYPD officers, and military—representing a variety of careers. The overwhelming common thread was the great experience we had at Xaverian. This speaks volumes to me about Xaverian and should to you. We all shared a common bond 50 years later. Some people say that the next four years will be the best years of your lives. I hope they are. But for so many of us, it was those four years at Xaverian.” Commencement exercises for the 51st class of Xaverian Seniors were held in Walt Whitman Auditorium at Brooklyn College on June 4, 2011. On this day of the conferral of their academic diplomas, the Class of 2011 joined the ranks of their 15,000+ alumni brothers. The ceremony featured an invocation by the Very Reverend Eugene N. Pappas; presentation of graduation awards by Assistant Principals Mummolo, Rodriguez, and Wilson ’77; Welcome by Principal Deacon McCormack, Valedictory by Alexander Hajjar ’11 and Salutatory by Ryan Veling ’11; President’s Address by Mr. Robert Alesi ’78, and the Keynote Commencement Address by Mr. Joseph DiMartino ’61, Chairman of The Dreyfus Family of Mutual Funds (excerpt above). Mr. DiMartino had not been back in Walt Whitman Auditorium since June 1961, when he received his own Xaverian High School diploma. He reflected on how the world has changed over the 50 years since his graduation: “The environment in 1961 was a lot different than the one you are facing today —JFK was president and we were living in Camelot. There were only six television stations, and no cable, satellite or internet. There was only AM radio. Life was simple and it was good. Little did we know that we were on the precipice of the 60’s revolution—along came the civil rights movement, women’s equality movement, the escalation of the Vietnam war, the anti-war movement, the assassination of our President, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy, and the music explosion with the British Invasion led by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and so much other great music which led to the emergence of the drug culture. It was the awakening of a generation that questioned authority and the status quo.” Since 1864, Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools have been preparing their students for an ever-changing world that comes with great challenges and opportunities. As new members join the Xaverian community, our network is continually energized by fresh ideas and new educational approaches. Xaverian is the technological leader in our network of schools, striving to equip our graduates with the academic skills and fluidity in technology necessary to achieve great things, while nurturing their spiritual growth and commitment to service, essential to the missions of all Xaverian Brothers Schools. Mr. DiMartino offered his advice for the challenges that lie ahead: “Now, you are facing a world with a whole different set of challenges. You now have instant communication—cell phone, internet, iPads, social networks, satellite and cable television with a million choices of channels, and a 24 hour news cycle from around the world. These are great technological advances, and along with them come great challenges. The first thing I want to say is, don’t be scared. With all the excitement you feel today, my guess is that you’re also feeling a little uncertain. You’re suddenly here with the responsibility for your whole life now, mostly,

in your hands. And, you’re being flung into a world that is running about as smoothly as a car with square wheels. I want you to know that it is okay to be uncertain. In a world like this, it is appropriate to be uncertain. You are becoming an adult at a time when the world’s leaders are behaving like children. Where the central image of our day is a terrorist one: humane concerns inhumanely expressed. If you weren’t a little uncertain, I would be nervous for you. You’ve been preparing yourself but you are not sure for what. And that’s alright too, because all of you have learned the most important thing that any school could teach you—you have learned to learn.” Congratulations and Good Luck to the Class of 2011.

Unlike any advancement in my time in education, one-to-one computing offered by the iPad changes everything about how we approach curriculum and instruction. While other schools are discussing the possibility of introducing this new technology, our faculty and administration believe—in true Xaverian tradition—that NOW is always the correct time to take advantage of any opportunities that enable our students to achieve excellence. All agree that the iPad is a great tool, but recognize that its value is directly tied to our faculty’s ability to use it effectively. Xaverian teachers participated in professional development programs throughout the Spring in preparing for the September launch. All hands are clearly on deck—in July, over 30 teachers voluntarily came back to school to work together to gain more insights into the iPad and its possibilities. Mr. John McCormick ’57 (St. Michaels): “I started out curious (and with a wee bit of trepidation) because our students were so much more advanced in things “tech,” and I’ve quickly begun to discover why. The amount of information available is simply incredible. There is no way that today’s learning experience cannot benefit from the use of iPads.” Ms. Kristen Hayes: “The introduction of the iPad into the classroom will give our students an additional way to master curriculum and explore up to date information. The number of resources available is growing everyday.” Mr. Vincent Raimondo ’97: “We are putting the learning back into the ‘hands’

of the student, empowering the student to personalize their learning, placing emphasis on self-motivation and active, student-centered learning.” The iPad also will demand closer collaboration among our teachers. Mr. Jon LaMattina: “Teachers need to work together and share ideas to effectively implement the new iPad. This can only improve the overall education of our students.” The 2011–2012 school year will also usher in a full return to the Advanced Placement program. While the International Baccalaureate program served our students in many positive ways over the last 10 years, after much research, we have determined that our offering of AP courses will allow a greater number of students access to more rigorous academic opportunities. Supporting this, Mrs. Roseann Guido points out,“While college credit is the obvious goal, the AP program allows students early exposure to more challenging coursework.” Mr. Thomas Burns ’83 adds, “Our AP Program will provided the platform for many of our young men to challenge themselves in a very rigorous world of academics. This in turn will provided them with the confidence and the tools to prepare themselves for stronger college placement.” Coupled with the return of relationships with both St. John’s and Syracuse Universities, our entire student body will have greater access to potential college credit. “The marriage of the iPad to the AP classroom will certainly prove fruitful,” says Ms. Stephanie D’Emic.“With time constraint being a major roadblock in my classes, a student’s ability to access a bevy of information at their fingertips is especially helpful, considering the breadth of material we cover in our AP class. Notably, the research component of our class can become more of an interactive collaboration amongst peers, instead of the usual at home research assignments.” The Xaverian Brothers network of schools, while having unique identities and programs, were given the same set of charges, one of them being to offer a challenging educational environment. Living up to the ideals of the Brothers, we have set sail—heading towards the horizon with high hopes—and expectations— that this year will be our best year yet!

Coming Home Reflections by Admissions Director, Gerard Buckley ’96 It had been 19 years since I first traveled the hallowed halls of 7100 Shore Road. I returned to Xaverian now not only as an alumnus, but as the Director of Admissions. While I have spent the past decade working in education as a teacher and administrator, I was still uncertain how it would feel being able to use the elevator at my leisure, and walk in and out of the faculty room. I further wondered about all the programs now offered at Xaverian: Ryken, Legacy, Equity, Honors, and Academy. While I wondered what was different, it made me think of a letter (yes, email was not quite there yet). I received in college from my classmate at Xaverian, Damian Brady ’96. He referenced the quote,“Once you leave home, you can never go back.” Was this what I was experiencing?

We seek to offer the best in Catholic Education to the young men of New York City in the tradition of the Xaverian Brothers. Over the past year I was able to very quickly acclimate myself as a member of the faculty. Here were a few points I observed—Senior Involvement is still run by Mr. McCormick, and he still provides quotes from the various organizations expressing gratitude for the work done by Xaverian men. On many Saturdays you can still bump into Mr. Montalbano working with his mock trial students. A Friday night triple header still shows Coach Jack Alesi pacing the sidelines as the final minutes of a close game tick away. Lastly, while many of the Xaverian Brothers are gone, our faculty consists of countless men who were educated by said Brothers. Once I realized this, my job became exponentially easier. Simply think back to the men who shaped my life in those formative years, and share that sentiment with prospective students. What I quickly realized was that, while much has changed, much has stayed the same. Whether the academic program is called Ryken, Honors, or Reach it is still the same goal: We seek to offer the best

in Catholic Education to the young men of New York City in the tradition of the Xaverian Brothers. We do this by providing academic programs for students of all levels and abilities. Furthermore, every student is afforded every opportunity in the classroom and on the ballfield.

Our admissions message for Open House was now clear: Xaverian is a Catholic college preparatory high school. We were able to share that message in many traditional and nontraditional means. We continued to visit the 7th and 8th grade classrooms of schools in New York City, as well as attending countless high school fairs. Our Open House continues to be considered the best by all who attend. Taking these points into consideration, we sought out new highways. The first internal step has been the collaboration between the admissions office, alumni and development. The model is one of an Advancement Team seeking to share the same message with our constituents as they enter and leave our institution. In that regard we hosted social gatherings in the Rockaways, Staten Island, and one at Xaverian. These were admissions events, intentionally placed in an informal setting for families and potential students to engage with our faculty, administration, and current Xaverian students. These efforts paid off as we saw an increase in the freshman class for the first time in 5 years. In seeking to continue to improve that which we do at Xaverian, it has been very important to find out why young men opt not to attend Xaverian. While

some reasons are out of our control such as “distance,” others are amendable. A common answer as to why boys choose other schools, are experiences they had as members of a school’s summer enrichment program. After hearing this, I worked closely with our Registrar, John Ronan, and launched, this summer, the Xaverian Community of Emerging Leaders (XCEL). The program integrates academic enrichment, recreation, leadership development, and spirituality for boys entering the 8th grade. In its first few weeks we saw great success from the 60 boys who were members of the program in its inaugural year. We believe this program will continue to grow and become a staple of our institution. The other area that we are seeking to grow is the message regarding the quality and value of a Xaverian education. In seeking to purvey that message it was clear that the students are the greatest indicators of value of a Xaverian education. In conjunction with our Alumni Director Eddie Mayrose, we have created a student organization, the Clipper Society. These young men serve as student ambassadors for our school. In the coming year their role will vary from assisting and providing tours at Open House, to serving as student representatives at alumni events. Remember those nice kids running around with iPads at All Hands On Deck? Yep, that was the Clipper Society. I can confidently tell you, you can absolutely “go back home.” Names have changed, but the mission is the same. I still went to CHIPS Soup kitchen for a day of service, just as I did as a student. We are still placing graduates in IVY League Universities and premiere academic institutions in the U.S. Our athletic teams continue to compete at the highest levels, while our music program is stronger than ever before. The bell still rings at 2:30 pm, and you still find the halls bustling with students involved in extracurricular activities, or meeting with teachers to prepare for tomorrow’s exam. So for fellow Xaverian alums considering Xaverian for their son’s high school education, please plan to attend our Open House on Sunday, October 16th. Let me know you are coming and you will be scheduled for the alumni VIP tours. I look back with gratitude at the education provided for me through Xaverian, and now stand proud offering the same to the next generation of Xaverian Men.

Passing the Baton

Student Spotlight Brian Bernardi ’12

In his two years on the Varsity Basketball team, senior guard Brian Bernardi has emerged as one of the best shooters in the city, leading the Clippers in scoring last season with more than 16 points per game; many from well beyond the three point arc. Named to the New Yok Post’s All-Brooklyn team while also receiving second team All-City honors from the New York Daily News, Brian’s performance has caught the attention of many college coaches. However, the accolades, the scoring prowess and even the heavy recruitment still don’t tell the whole story about the type of player he is, according to Head Coach Jack Alesi.“During one of the biggest weekends of the summer season, Brian passed on an AAU tournament to attend a team camp with his high school teammates. That’s all you need to know about him. It’s not about individual glory with Brian.” Make no mistake; Bernardi is an elite player, having already received scholarship offers from Hofstra, James Madison, LaSalle, George Washington, Iowa State, and Southern Methodist. “The best shooter to come out of Xaverian since Chris Mullin,” according to Coach Alesi.“I’d be surprised if there were five better shooters in the country.” As his coach tells it, Bernardi’s accomplishments on the court, while very impressive, are only a part of the reason he is being so heavily recruited.“Brian is a great kid. He’s a terrific student from a wonderful family. His character is as attractive to these coaches as his talent.” 6 www.xaverian.org

Tony Perrone ’54 (St. Michael’s) was Xaverian’s first track coach, taking the reins of the program and leading the Clippers for eight years while making a lasting impression on many of his charges, including Len Florio ’61, who later became a track coach.“I have been in contact with Tony over the years and I know many of his other former runners are still in touch with him. His low key approach worked for him. Having taught and coached on the high school level for 34 years myself, I can say it didn’t work for a lot of other coaches. He was a role model for me and many others.” Steve Galetta ’75 Laray Smith is a junior at Xaverian; a member of the Class of 2013. He’s an All-City performer whose prowess on the track has made him the leading sprinter in the CHSAA with state ranked times in both the 100M and 200M. His best performance came in the CHSAA Intersectionals, where, in addition to being named the meet’s Outstanding Performer, he broke the school record in the 200M (22.3) which was previously held by Steve Galetta ’75.“I’m delighted to see a Xaverian kid on top of the City Championships in Track,” said Galetta. Tony Perrone ’54 and Laray Smith ’13 have never met. However, they are connected by the legacy of the Xaverian track team: one as the founder and the other as the current standard bearer. They are linked by the many men who have been a part of the program over the last half-century; coaches and runners alike. Dr. Galetta ’75 is one of many that have become fans of the fleet footed junior and the current track team, but perhaps none is bigger than Galetta’s track coach, Frank McCartney, head coach for more than three decades. McCartney, who retired in 2005, is back on the Xaverian track scene, as his son, Brian ’04, is coming off of his first season as Head Coach. Coach Brian McCartney led the Freshman indoor team to a second place finish in the Brooklyn Queens Championships and is looking to build on last season’s success beginning with the upcoming Cross Country season. “The Xaverian track program is alive and well,” declares the elder McCartney. Given its foundation, who could argue?

Sports Summary Lacrosse Carrying a roster that featured just five seniors, the Lacrosse team still garnered a playoff berth as Head Coach Brian McNulty welcomed a junior class fresh off a JV City Championship. While Eric Magriples, Nicholas Doucette, Cody Greenstein, Steven Taikina, and Daniel Smith will be missed, the future looks bright for the Clippers.

Tennis Daniel Witke led a Varsity Tennis team that had its ups and downs during the season. Head Coach Alex Alfredo cited the individual progress of his players as the year’s biggest highlight.

Volleyball Behind seniors Joe Khoury, Marco Giarracca, and Neil Khoury, the Volleyball team, under Head Coach Theresa Rau, compiled a league record of 5-4; good enough for its third straight appearance in the CHSAA playoffs.

Baseball In his second term in the Xaverian dugout, Head Coach Lou Piccola, named Brooklyn’s Coach of the Year by the New York Post, guided the Varsity Baseball team to the New York City CHSAA crown. Led by Victor Bautista, Kevin Martir, Bob McKenna,Tommy Midolo, Antonio Nunez, Anthony Pastrana, Blaise Scerbo, and Elvin Soto, all of whom copped post-season honors ranging from All-Brooklyn to All-City, the Clippers compiled a 21-2 record and capped their championship season with a 7-1 victory over All Hallows in the title game at St. John’s University.

Golf A very young Varsity golf squad struggled through a tough CHSAA schedule last spring. Senior Sal Emilio was a bright spot for Coach Bill Ameneiros, who is optimistic that the freshmen and sophomores on the 2011 roster will put their experience to good use in 2012.

Extra-Curricular Highlights The performing arts program dominated the extracurricular scene this spring with a host of performances. MAX, the Pipe and Drum Corps and theater program have the voluntary participation of 50% of the student body.

Go, go, go, Joseph... Under the stage direction of Ms. Stephanie D’Emic and the musical direction of Mr.Vincent Iannelli ’03, the Xaverian Dramatics Society took to the stage in April to present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Starring Marco Giarracca and St. Joseph Hill Academy’s Kim Ohna, the production was a true collaboration of Xaverian talent, as senior Joseph Pagani served as Assistant Musical Director while the show was choreographed by junior Steve Blandino.

Alumni Corner Eddie Mayrose ’78 Director of Alumni Relations It’s been a busy eighteen months since I first addressed the Alumni in my new role. There have been new events established, most notably the All Hands On Deck Reunion which took place in April, all of which have served to engage alums and give them an idea of the wonderful things still happening at 7100 Shore Road. In getting to know the young men that make up today’s student body, I realized that their alumni brothers would be very proud of how they live up to the tradition of Xaverian with their hard work in the classroom, their community service and their dedication to each other. It is as they began to become involved in our alumni events that I felt even more pride as these current Clippers became familiar with the men that had gone before them. Given a small glimpse of what it means to have attended Xaverian, our kids have been buoyed by the support and example of the alumni. As we open another school year, the business of the Alumni Association takes center stage. Our goal is to begin to reestablish the many alumni groups that have played such an important and supportive role in the past. PAX (Police Alumni at Xaverian), X-BAR (Xaverian Attorneys), X-ACT (Xaverian Alumni Community Theater), TAX (The Accountants at Xaverian) and X-Change (Wall St.Alumni) are all groups that supported the school and, just as importantly, each other.

It was the overwhelming sentiment expressed in the professional survey sent out in the spring that you would like the opportunity to network. The schedule of Alumni Association meetings (right) has been dedicated to giving you such an opportunity. If you did not receive the alumni survey, please contact our office with your email at alumni@xaverian.org and be sure to follow Xaverian on Facebook and Twitter. If you’d like to get involved, or have an idea about other alumni groups, please contact the alumni office. We will be looking to build on the momentum created by all of the alums that contributed their time and expertise to events like the Spirit of Xaverian Dinner, The All Hands On Deck Reunion and the Heroes Golf Outing. We’re looking forward to a great year at Xaverian. I hope you can be a part of it. All meetings take place the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm.

Call for Memorabilia! “The occasion of our first 50th Anniversary reunion is a fitting milestone for the school to make a serious commitment to conserving our history,” noted President Bob Alesi ’78, in announcing the establishment of the Xaverian Archives. Former faculty member and current part-time consultant Sigfried Heiles ’64, will serve as initial archivist and historian. “In my years as Alumni Director,” observed Sigfried,“various bits of memorabilia would occasionally come our way from teachers, alumni, or alumni families engaged in spring cleaning. It is time to build a permanent, catalogued collection to preserve and celebrate our history.” Among the items currently stored are photographs, copies of The Local and X-Press, student handbooks, calendars, shirts, caps, schedule cards, and more. At the moment, however, the collections are woefully incomplete, so memorabilia of any kind will be gladly welcomed. If you have something you are willing to donate, contact Sigfried via email at sheiles@xaverian.org or leave a message at 718.836.7100, ext. 872.

Faculty Notes After twenty five years as the coach of the Varsity Swimming team, Jim D’Ottavio was honored by some of his former swimmers at the All Hands On Deck Reunion in April. “Jimmy never played favorites, even though he had quite a large team,” said Eddie Matula ’89. “He was innovative; teaching us all about taking our pulse and checking our heart rate—things that not many other coaches were doing back then. He knew all of us well, and understood our strengths and weaknesses. Even now, when swimming laps in my own pool, I pull my arm down under my body in the same manner Jimmy taught me 25 years ago. It was great to see him and my teammates again.” Other faculty to return home were Brother Bonaventure Scully C.F.X. and coach Tony Perrone, who enjoyed seeing grads from his 1961 Track team. Brother Clement Kowalchuk retired from teaching at Xaverian. He also celebrated his Golden Jubliee this year, his 50th anniversary as a Xaverian Brother, and was recognized at Xaverian High School with a Mass and reception in May. “For the four years that our class has been here, Brother Clement has worked both with and for us in so many areas. He has always been around to give a hand to a group or individual students and can be found in his Art Room, which many believe to be his legal residence. Besides his magnificent art work and design on sets for all of Xaverian’s theatrical productions and his talent in the classroom, Brother Clem is fun-loving and always out for a good time. This has been shown by his many trips to pizza parlors, Chinese restaurants, Marine museums and early British settlements. He is a man who is even tempered and mild mannered. Brother Clem is quickwitted and fearless to show it. Brother Clement has been there for us and is helping us to get there with him. We salute you, Brother Clem, thank you and love you.” So wrote the members of the Class of 1973 as they dedicated their yearbook to our good friend. Reading their words, one begins to realize that, had the class year not been identified, it would be impossible to guess the source, so

On his return to the U.S., he successfully completed graduate studies at NYU and Fordham, earning an M.A. in both English and Secondary Education. Following three years teaching at St. Stephen’s in Brooklyn, Mr. Nappo joined the faculty of Xaverian in 1965, as a teacher of English and Latin. Until 1993, he used his unique wit and inimitable style to make his classes highly memorable. A moderator of the National Honor Society, which honored him in 2009, the 1971 Clipper Yearbook was dedicated to him, and in 2001, he was named Distinguished Xaverian Faculty Member. Whenever alumni gather and old tales be told, Mr. Nappo is fondly remembered.

Brother Bonaventure Scully C.F.X. was one of many former faculty members who came back for Alumni Reunion. generous and devoted has Brother Clem been to each member of the Xaverian community during his more than four decades at the school. How fortunate the young men and women that have spent time at 7100 Shore Road and benefited from the kindness and leadership of Brother Clem. Brother Clem writes, “There is no way that I can sufficiently thank each and every one of you who attended my Golden Jubilee. It was the most heartwarming experience I have had. There was so much love, at the Mass, and at the celebration that followed, that many who were there commented on the feeling. The love I felt was most appreciated. Please know that I love you all so much, and will continue to do so. You will always have a special place in my heart. God Bless, and keep in touch with the Clemster.”

In Memoriam Mr. Ernest Nappo 1933–2011 If anyone earned the title Mr. English, it’s “Ernie” Nappo, who instructed generations of Xaverian students in literature, grammar, vocabulary and diction. A native of Brooklyn, Mr. Nappo considered “Brooklynese” a veritable English dialect which had to be overcome to achieve success outside the Province. In the tradition of Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, he insisted that his students read, write, and speak proper English. A class with Mr. Nappo always went beyond the dicta of the curriculum. Students in British Literature were as likely to learn about the artist Rembrandt, hear an Italian opera, or study the rock gardens of Kyoto as read Macbeth or the poetry of John Keats. A graduate of the legendary Boy’s High School, Mr. Nappo earned a B.A. in English from St. John’s University before joining the U.S. Air Force. During five years of military service in Europe, he studied German at NATO schools and took full advantage of the cultural treasures of the Continent.

Please remember in your prayers the following members of the Xaverian community whose passing has been reported to the Alumni Office since the last issue of the Navigator. Robert A. Includes gifts and pledges

To begin, thank you! The Advancement program—Development, Alumni and Admissions—had many successes this year that translated both financially, and in “intangibles.” We hope this issue of the Navigator communicates a few of these intangibles—many, many alumni came home to support a growing number of events; there is a sense of pride and appreciation that the leadership of Xaverian today recognizes and values the foundation the Xaverian Brothers has given to our network of 13 schools and is committed to preserving that legacy; our community supports academic and technological initiatives that will continue to put Xaverian at the forefront of education. This success is directly tied to leadership among our alumni and parents. Overall alumni participation grew from 3.4% to 7% this year. You will read about the establishment of the Brother J. Meric Pessagno Scholarship, established through the hard work of a committee comprised of members of the Class of 1961, and the generosity of many. In addition to the $125,150 raised for that scholarship, ’61 graduates supported the Clipper Fund with an additional $25,405 towards a class gift to celebrate their golden anniversary. The ’61 graduates led class participation among all alumni classes at 39%. You have read the Xaverian phrase,“In harmony, small things grow,” before. It is the perfect call for our Clipper Fund. Every gift is appreciated and valued. If each graduate gave $100, we would easily exceed our 2011–2012 goals. We hope you consider showing your support with your gift today!

Bernard McQuillan Scholarship This memorial scholarship was established years ago to honor Mr. Bernard McQuillan, a teacher at Xaverian for over 30 years who touched the lives of almost every student walking through the doors of 7100 Shore Road. As a teacher of Russian, Psychology, English, and Computer Science, he had a lasting impact on generations of alumni. It is Xaverian’s goal to establish a committee that will raise the necessary funds to endow this scholarship in perpetuity. To volunteer, please contact Corinne M. King, Director of Development.

Annual Report 2010 –2011

Brother J. Meric Pessagno Scholarship When graduates of the Class of 1961 gathered to celebrate and reflect upon the 50 years since graduation, they agreed it was the right moment to support Xaverian in a significant way. Brother J. Meric Pessagno, most notably in his capacity as the coach of the Speech and Debate team, was the teacher whom they wished to honor. This scholarship will be awarded each fall to an incoming Freshman, selected based on his academic merit, financial need and interest in taking advantage of all that Xaverian has to offer, both in the classroom and extracurricular life. The first J. Meric Pessagno Scholar is Jesse Slevin ’15, a valedictorian from St.Anselm’s. Contributions to the fund as of 7/26/11 total: $158,800. Jerome (Jerry) Allan Pessagno was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in April of 1933. Throughout his life, he was known as a great intellectual and brilliant public speaker. Jerry was educated by the Xaverian Brothers, attending Mount St. Joseph’s in Baltimore. So greatly influenced was he by the Brothers and their mission, Jerry joined the Order and chose the name Meric. He loved this name so much that, after he eventually left the Brothers, he adopted it. Brother Meric joined the Brothers and matriculated at Catholic University where he obtained a B.A. and an M.A. in the Classics and Philosophy. He then taught at Xaverian from 1957 to 1964. He was a great teacher, especially in religion. For years, he coached speech and debate. Under his tutelage, his boys won many speech tournaments, including state and national championships. In 1967, the Brothers gave him permission to pursue his doctorate, and he was accepted at Yale University, where he studied in the Near Eastern Languages and Literature Department. Among his studies were courses in Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic. Jerry left the Order in 1969. In February 1970, he met his wife, Betty. They were married that November and moved to Westport, Connecticut. In September of that year, Jerry began teaching Latin and Greek at New Canaan High School, a position he would hold until 1995, the year he suffered a massive heart attack and underwent triple bypass surgery. Throughout his years of teaching, he was an immensely popular

and charismatic figure at New Canaan, as he had been in the Xaverian schools. In 1996, through the lovely offices of his dear friends and former students, he began teaching at St. John’s University as an adjunct professor of philosophy. In 1997, he returned to Xaverian High School where he taught for the next year and a half, until his health declined and he could no longer make the trek to Brooklyn. His return to Xaverian gave him perhaps his only real happiness in the years after his illness began. Jerry died on December 31, 2000, survived by his beloved wife Betty, and children Eric and Claudia. Biographical information obtained from the Catholic Educational Foundation and Joe Pierini ’61

Charlie Hadlock ’64, on why he supports the Brother J. Meric Pessagno Scholarship “I’ve had the privilege over the last nine years of serving on the Board of Trustees and chairing its educational program committee. This means that three times a year I spend a whole day on campus visiting classes, talking to students, and meeting with faculty and administrators. When I sit in on a math class or a Spanish class or a history class or anything else and watch the students’ attitudes and reactions to the teachers, raising their hands enthusiastically to be the first to be called on, speaking with remarkable fluency in a foreign language, or doing the same math we teach our college freshmen, I am deeply impressed with the academic momentum of the school. But even more important, when I talk with individual students about their plans for the future or when we interview small groups of students from the full spectrum of academic levels, not only are they really enthusiastic about the school and, especially, the close connection they feel with the teachers, but they are wrapped up in the search for their place in society and the opportunities that they may have to contribute to others. Xaverian fosters this better than any other school I know, and it’s a precious contribution. I think we all came out of Xaverian almost taking for granted the importance of making a positive impact on society, not just finding a successful career path, but I find that this point of view is the exception rather than the rule among the college population I deal with. This combination of academic excellence and values-laden education, which transcends any particular religious orientation, is the way we need to prepare our future leaders in all walks of life.”

experience

influence contribution remembering community

The Whitcome Society A defining moment in Xaverian’s history, Xaverian’s endowment grew from a little over 1 million dollars to over $10 million in 2005 upon Dr. Phil Whitcome’s passing. Dr.Whitcome ’66 was known for being the leader on the Board, focused on long-term planning to ensure Xaverian’s future success.

“You get to a point in your life when you start to look back and think about the influences on your life. My entire Xaverian experience was positive and has had a lasting impact. I want to leave a legacy that allows Xaverian to continue to give young men a positive experience during a very critical time in their lives. If I can do that, I feel I would have made an important contribution to this community and to society. Remembering Xaverian in my estate is the way for me to support my alma mater.” —Mr. Stephen Maresca ’68

The Whitcome Society—named in his honor—serves to thank donors who include Xaverian High School in their estate plans. Members fulfill their philanthropic goals by securing a future for loved ones and providing much-needed funds to support facilities enhancement and scholarships. If you’ve already included Xaverian in your estate plan, we would like to personally thank you and invite you to join the Whitcome Society. Members will be acknowledged in future Annual Reports and invited to a reception in May 2012, details to come. For more information, please contact Corinne M. King, Director of Development, 718.759.5719 or cking@xaverian.org
