Did you know that legendary baseball player, George Herman “Babe” Ruth, was educated by the

impact on her father. She replied, “When the Babe was twenty-three years old, the whole world loved him.

When he was thirteen years old, only Brother Matthias loved him.” In that brief statement by Julia Ruth Stevens, you have the quintessence of Xaverian education. We have always believed that our job is to form positive relationships with the students in our charge so that, through those enduring relationships, we can

help mold and educate them.
The characteristics of a Xaverian experience include: caring teachers, a commitment to the service
of others, the development of a student’s personal relationship with God, and the establishment of enduring relationships within the Xaverian community.

This transformation occurs through daily prayer, schoolwide masses, retreats at every grade level and Kairos retreats for upperclassmen, community service initiatives, and a rigorous, academic religion curriculum. All of these opportunities create an environment in which Xaverian students embrace the spiritual values of the Xaverian Brothers: humility, simplicity, compassion, trust, and zeal.

Students are taught to become independent thinkers whose learning goes beyond the classroom. The academic program at Xaverian is designed so that all students will be challenged to their fullest potential, mastering the necessary skills, as well as curriculum content, to be fully prepared for their collegiate pursuits. The establishment of a fruitful, collaborative, and cooperative atmosphere is an essential part of school learning. Xaverian courses are designed, often with an interdisciplinary approach, to teach technological communication and presentation skills. Students are required to engage in research and to work together on class projects.

Specialized Studies Programs Xaverian has two specialized studies programs: the Ryken Program and the Equity Program. The Ryken Program is a New York State approved Special Education Program for students demonstrating the cognitive ability to master a rigorous college preparatory program, but whose academic performance is significantly hampered by a documented disability to store, process, or produce information.
The Equity Program is designed for students with mild learning disabilities. Students in the program will travel together in their first year, but then are placed in mainstream classes, including Honors and AP classes in their subsequent years. They motivated and inspired me to reach for the dreams that are now my reality. Xaverian has also played a huge role in the development of my faith, as I was always encouraged to trust in God’s plan for me. I truly believe that God will work through me by developing my gifts so I can do my part to better the world.”
ISAAC JEAN-FRANCOIS ‘16 Attending Columbia University “Each of the members of the class of 2016, empowered by the Xaverian tradition and family, experienced tremendous growth in our own ways. For me, it was my experience on the speech and debate team that drove my hunger for knowledge and social justice. Advocacy for underrepresented communities has been close to my heart. For some, it was an art class or a sport that drove their hunger. Regardless of the source, we have all come to know a desire for something greater than ourselves. We must continue to seek personal, academic, and intellectual growth as we go into college and beyond. We must remember the people who, along our journey towards success, have taught us lessons we couldn’t learn elsewhere. Most importantly, we must use the lessons we learn to empower those around us and to create a better world for all.”

I’ve also learned the importance of faith in daily life. This faith can be in a higher power or in yourself, but it will, nevertheless, motivate you to strive for greatness.”

I love how Xaverian gives equal opportunity for success to everyone. For example, I took honors classes, participated in various extra-curriculars, and am going to attend one of the most prestigious universities despite the fact that I am an immigrant who came to Xaverian from an ESL program in public school. PATRICK COEN ’14 Attending United States Naval Academy “Xaverian was the best thing that ever happened to my faith. My four years here taught me what it really means to be a Catholic, to have a strong relationship with God, and to not be ashamed about that. I don’t think there are many places where teenage guys don’t feel embarrassed about looking for God in their lives, but that was the blessing we were given here. Xaverian gave each of us the opportunity to explore our faith, at our own pace, however we felt most comfortable about it. That’s incredibly important for teenagers who are learning about who they are, and how to live their faith.”

by John Chianchiano ’18 In this hall of change, Where young boys walk, To receive an education, Where they become men. In this hall of change, Where programs were created Giving everyone opportunities. In this hall of change, Where young girls will be welcomed To receive an education, Where they will become women. In this hall of change, As brothers, we will gain sisters. We are all family In the house of Xaverian.
