Uniquely Xavier There are 102 historically Black colleges and 253 Catholic colleges in the United States, yet only one is both Black and Catholic, and that distinction belongs to Xavier. Our doors, however, have always been open to students of every race and creed. Today 73.9 percent of the student population is African-American and 27.3 percent is Catholic.
There’s an inherent greatness about Xavier. As America’s only Historically
Black, Catholic university and the nation’s only college founded by a saint, there is an innate excellence that pervades these grounds — and all who come here. In one of the world’s great cities, in a mission-driven, values-centered learning environment, a Xavier education will challenge you, and support you in every way, to become the scholar, leader and contributor you were meant to be. Greatness will surround you at Xavier. It will inspire you. It will embolden you. And, in the end, it will transform you.

We are a University on a mission The mission of our founder, St. Katharine Drexel, lives on at Xavier. Her commitment to quality education for African Americans and Native Americans and to a more just and humane society is integral to all we teach and do at Xavier University of Louisiana. Ours is a higher education with a higher purpose – grounded in values, respectful of all faiths and dedicated to leading and serving in a global world. This is a rigorous, professionally-oriented education that will prepare you for your career, but it is also a deep and ethical education that, in the spirit of St. Katharine Drexel, will prepare you for life. Affordable Xavier
A Mission of Excellence
Our university’s mission extends to our desire to make a Xavier education affordable. We understand the significant investment of a private college education, and we do everything we can to make a Xavier education the best value possible for the families we serve.
The Princeton Review recently named Xavier as one of the nation’s “Best 376 Colleges.” The Fiske Guide to Colleges tabbed Xavier a “Best Buy.”

Renowned Faculty At Xavier, you’ll study with professors who are nationally and internationally recognized scholars. And know this: they are not experts whom you’ll see from afar in an expansive auditorium classroom, but rather they are caring teacher-mentors who will work side by side with you, imparting their knowledge and experience in an individualized way. A small sampling of our distinguished faculty includes: • Dr. Michael White, professor of Spanish and African American Music, is an eminent jazz historian and performer who was named “Humanist of the Year” by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
Xavier University has earned an international reputation for academic excellence. Grounded in the liberal arts, and deepened by the Christian values of service and personal responsibility, Xavier provides an exceptional education that not only equips students with the competitive skills and knowledge to thrive in the 21st century, but also instills in them the faith and character needed to help change it. Ours is a high standard of achievement, to which all are held accountable. It is a commitment to excellence, hard work and enlightened leadership that drives all we are and all we do.
• Dr. Elizabeth Yost Hammer, Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and a professor of psychology, is focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning, specifically on applying social psychological theories to the classroom. • Language professor Dr. Anthony Aramburo focuses research efforts on the African American Deaf Community and serves as president of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters. • Theology professor Dr. Michael Homan’s research focuses on how people lived in the ancient Near East, and he brings more than 20 years of archeological field experience supervising excavations in Israel and Jordan. • Dr. Shuba Kale Ireland, Chair of the Department of Biology, has received broad recognition for her teaching, research, success in securing external funding, and mentoring of students. • Dr. JW Carmichael, director of Xavier’s prestigious premed program, received an honorary degree from Meharry Medical College for “his success in making Xavier the undisputed leader in African American medical school acceptances.” • Psychology professor Dr. Charles Gramlich is a leading authority on the work of Charles Darwin and his relation to evolutionary psychology. • Dr. John Ware, a professor of music and conductor/music director of the New Orleans Black Chorale, received the Big Easy Entertainment Award’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Liberal Arts Thinking A liberal arts core prepares Xavier students for a lifetime of learning, leadership and service. In every academic major, students are steeped in the arts, humanities and sciences, teaching them not just to memorize but to think for themselves — critically, creatively and ethically.

A Research Leader Among the nation’s 105 historically black colleges and universities, Xavier currently ranks sixth in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and first on a per capita basis. Among all universities in the nation, Xavier is among the top 27 percent in National Science Foundation funding and among the top 16 percent in NIH funding. In Louisiana, Xavier ranks third in NIH funding in the state, behind only Tulane and the LSU System. Our university’s commitment to research creates immense undergraduate research opportunities for students across all academic disciplines.
The best way to prepare for the real world is to learn in the real world
Into the Real World Real-world experience takes many forms at Xavier. Below is just a sampling of our students’ active, hands-on learning:
• Physics students have worked on a telemedicine project in Angola, Africa, for two weeks.
• Biology majors routinely perform research with faculty members during semesters or summers or both.
• Political Science majors engage in internships with policy makers on Capitol Hill, law firms in both the public and private arena and local embassies and international organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
• Business students compete in national business plan competitions. • Each semester, an average of 45 chemistry students are actively engaged in research projects supervised by Xavier faculty. • Computer Science majors intern at leading companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Siemens. • English majors work directly with professors and other students on professional-caliber research projects, some of which have led to publication or performance.
• By the end of their third semester, all Psychology students have completed an original research project. • Public Health Sciences students participate in servicelearning projects, including health promotion events, health fairs, media campaigns, and health policy and advocacy efforts. • Sociology students teach computer classes to returning long-term prisoners.
• American Sign Language students serve at The Deaf Olympics, the Canal Boulevard Deaf Church and at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. • Mass Communication majors gain experience at our own campus TV channel, radio station and student newspaper, as well as through internships with professional media outlets.
Sitting in a classroom and hearing about the real world can be very instructive. But getting out and experiencing your major firsthand — that’s when learning is at its most active and best. At Xavier, regardless of your major, you’ll consistently engage in any number of real-world learning opportunities, including collaborative classroom projects, high-level undergraduate research, professional internships and externships, service-learning opportunities, travel and study abroad and more. It’s an education that’s more real and practical. It’s an education that will set you apart. 12

Xavier has been named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
When your founder is a saint, you take your mission seriously When St. Katharine Drexel is your founder, service to others is a given. Community outreach and service-learning are integral to a Xavier education – they are part of our mission; they are a part of our consciousness; they are a part of us. Every Xavier freshman completes his or her first year having done a service project. Service-learning initiatives are woven throughout our curriculum, in every major. Our student clubs are required to complete three service projects each year. It’s a tradition of service that deepens our learning and enriches our spirit. We reach out to change lives, and in the process, we are changed as well. 14
This is an education of the mind, and the heart 15
