IGNATIAN Scholars Program
THE IGNATIAN Scholars Program The Ignatian Scholars Program combines a rigorous course of study with enrichment programs including lectures, cultural experiences and service opportunities designed to challenge and stimulate the brightest students. Far from a traditional honors program, Xavier’s Ignatian Scholars Program seeks to develop well-rounded graduates who can think critically and act compassionately in keeping with the Jesuit educational tradition, which has a reputation spanning more than 500 years for educating some of the world’s greatest minds.
“The Ignatian Scholars Program has provided me with the skills to reach my potential and to exercise my leadership ability. It is more than just an academic program, it is a community that inspires excellence and curiosity both in and out of the classroom.” Anthony Cruise ’16 Ignatian Scholar
Candidates FOR THE IGNATIAN Scholars Program: • Earn straight A’s in middle school • Score in the top 5-7% locally on their standardized exam • Score in the top 10% on the Xavier Scholarship Exam • Have strong teacher recommendations and submit impressive admissions applications
ACADEMIC Enrichment The Ignatian Scholars Program incorporates honors-level courses during your freshman and sophomore years taught by some of Xavier’s most challenging faculty members. Later, Ignatian Scholars who excel are invited to choose from 14 Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Most Ignatian Scholars are accepted into the National Honor Society during their junior year.
“The Ignatian Scholars program pushed me to new heights in the classroom with the curriculum and out of the classroom through the different guest speakers and field trips. But I never felt like there was a pressure to be perfect or that there was a competition among the students. Xavier was everything promised to me the night of the Ignatian Scholars reception and so much more. That is the reason I have spent seven straight summers coming back to 16th Street with the HAP program. It’s why I come back every Thanksgiving for the Turkey Bowl. And it’s why I will be dropping back in at Xavier for many years to come.” Brendan Roche ’08 Harvard University ’12
EXTRACURRICULAR Identity Since Jesuit education emphasizes the development of the entire student, our scholars complete a full cultural enrichment program including hands-on experiences. It’s all about growing into a mature, educated adult who is well-versed in culture, history and the arts.
