CHAMBER OF INFINITY 2016 WIN | Propositions studio "One Room" Individual Work | Advisors: Craig Borum, Amy Kulper


Precedent Study The research for "one room" starts with the picture room in Sir John Soane's Museum, where I looked into its aggregate effect of objectivity, its transformative quality achieved by the precisely calculated folding mechanism and the literal and imaginary depth of the hidden space behind walls. The model is to study the aggregation effect of the objectivity and to what extend could it give the roominess to the space. The matrix just introduce the study trying to chronologically aggregate and extrude the folding mechanism.

Early Proposal The aggregation of infrastructure system which blend into the space and thus give the roominess to the space. The representation of the room lead to another effect of non-boundary resulted from the aggregation. The manipulation involved in this proposal would be the controlled movement allowed for the aggregated mass, through which variations for space and how the space is defined is introduced to the whole system. For this case, the representation of the aggregation provides the new inspiration of later design ideas.

is produced through the aggregation of both objects and mechanisms within a limited boundary. By introducing certain rhythms, logics into the repetition-the arrangement of the glass columns-the whole system would be manipulated and the desired effect could be achieved. The physical column itself has the linear shape which has the effect of extension. Through the aggregation of them, the effect of extension is mounted and the effect of vanishing is amplified. The column carry with it the mechanism of reflection and refraction. The reflection of light and the reflection of sound. Such mechanism is also aggregated along with the column itself and introduce a mounted visionary and vocal effect. Through the random but controlled placement of the columns, the mechanism of reflection are mounted and transformed into the effect of absorbance or delivery varies from point to point. Through this aggregation of mechanism, viewers are able to have an indirect view of infinity, by seeing the reflected and refracted light from the other side and hear the sound coming from somewhere. 05

Single-loaded Corridor as Social Space The single-loaded corridor with stairs connecting each floor is designed to be one of the main social space for the residents within the building. Openings between the apartments and the corridor not only serves for privacy but also let light goes through.

is an investigation into the potentials of Robotic Fabrication through a small scale case study using Styrofoam. Components which stand adjacent to one another and create conditions of expanding and contracting apertures. These apertures change to allow more or less light through as the wall goes from permeable/transparent to impermeable/solid. Light can be seen dancing over the elevation as the pieces curve, generating patterns of shadow and light over the helix shape megaliths.

uses grasshopper as the simulation software to generate patterns on single boat-shape component as well as the assembly pattern of the whole 2D+ wall. The Zund is involved to cut the boat-components, followed by manual folding and assembly processes.

Purposal Through the reorganizing and reconstruction of the existing children’s daycare center into the children-and elderly center, the vacant infrastructure can be reused while keeping the cost low. We want to encourage the communication and bonding between children and the elderly. The main goal is to initiate an innovative project, since the classical retirement home is already a discontinued model.
