PORTFOLIO Amy Xiang

Amy Xiang I am currently a upcoming third-year architecture student of College of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell University, expected to graduate in 2017. The following portfolio contains my work from this year. I believe it shows my problem solving skills, ideas and my own interpretation of architecture design so far. Thanks for your time. amyxonline@gmail.com (607)379-5346

1. CENTRE D'EDUCATION INCLUSIF This is a project of school in Haiti at a given site. The program needs to include six classrooms, a cafeteria, a medical center, an administration office and a library. Each person proposed a scheme at the beginning of the design process. Each two of the schemes combined to a new design.

I

Scheme I: Big Roof

Plan For SCHEME I, after considering the hot and humid weather, I proposed big roof to shelter school from sunlight and rain. The classrooms and library are elevated to second level which allows the area below to be used as supporting functions and a sheltered playground. II

The structure is adapted from Japenese wooden structure which performes a high resistance in earthquakes. With a seperate system from concrete walls, even if concrete fail in earthquake conditions, wooden structure, including the metal roof will remain stable. IX

2. SEQUENCE: SMALL: A Viewing Space

REQUIREMENT -- This problem is to design a small viewing space accomadates one people. The space needs to fulfill the program for sitting, viewing and storage objects.

XIII

IDEA -- VIEW is not only a sight sensation, but also an experience. This space is created for a person to have different sensations, aethesis and views by different kind of light effects and room arrangements.

XIV

XV

REQUIREMENT -- The space is developed into several movable triangular sections. People get into the room from a narrow and dark space. As they walk around, the space becomes wider and brighter, with light comes in from strips. People's sight is restricted to a continuous film view. Finally, they will arrive to a opening space with a framed view. The roof panels are hinged to the wall. They provide support to each other and achieve a balance. When the spaces move, the panels turn along the hinges and get to a new balance point. XVI

XVII

MOVING TRACING -- The space is theoratically developed to be movable. The site is cut when the room moves. When the room is built and settled, people can still get the idea of its moving according to the tracing.

XVIII

MEDIUM: An Exhibition Space REQUIREMENT -- The space will accomandate approximately 50 people in the given site. It needs to fulfill the functions as exhibition area, viewing rooms, storage and workshops. It will be read as a series of spaces along a path. SITE -- Priorat Region, Spain

LARGE: An Archaeological Museum

The site for this project is a city block in MĂŠrida, Spain. An old temple ruin in this site need to be protected. XXI

REQUIREMENT -- The intervention should take down less than 30% of the existing buildings. - No interfering to the Temple and ruin. - Program: - Entrance, Foyer, Information center - Exhibition spaces - Storage, Ateliers, Restoration workshops - Staff office, Washrooms - CafĂŠ, Auditorium XXII

IDEA -- Inspired by the city fabric, I took part of the pattern of the existing buildings and courtyards and folded it to form space. The lines in the original city are now defined by walls and level change of floors and ceilings. Courtyards become structure elements, alternative egress, openings for natural light, etc. XXIII

PROGRAM -- Circulation of this project weaves up following the pattern-folding. Exhibition spaces occur along the circulation. CafĂŠ, storage, restoration workshops are under the main exhibiting level, with entrances seperating from the museum.

XXIV

Unfolded sections shows how the continuous circulation works.

Connection Details

STRUCTURE SYSTEMS -- The Arboretum forms its unique vaulted space through two main systems: a curvilinear roof structure composed of rafters, struts, purlins, brackets, beams and cable ties that in concert, form a series of geometrical arcs, and a system of concrete columns and outwardly spanning struts that connect to give support to the roof above. 5. RETREAT: A Botanic House

REQUIREMENT -- Retreat center for 6 botanists on a given site with a mill ruin, fulfilling the needs for botanists living and studying XXXXI I

IDEA -- Using a light transparent material to mimic the concrete walls of the mill ruin, including cracks on the walls, and expand the space by unfolding glass shell. The expanded space is used as a vertical botanic garden with circulation weaving in it, while the spaces inside the ruin are occupied as living area. XXXXII II
