Location: Chicago, IL

A seam joins two things together and forms a connection. Without the seam, the connection would not exist. Our building is full of moments similar to a seam. The program (Third Place and Main Functions) come together and overlap to form connections. Although a seam may be a small gesture, it has a large impact on the space. The people circulating throughout the space represent the thread that holds the ‘fabric’ together. The dark spaces in the below diagram represent the interactions caused by the seams.

THIRD PLACE Third place is a leveler, by nature, an inclusive place that tends to expand possibilities and permits the individual to know others in a different and fuller aspect than is possible in other places. Third places counter the tendency to be restrictive in the enjoyment of others by being open to all and by laying emphasis on qualities not confined to status distinctions current in the society. - Ray Oldenburg

Recognizing the site of the villa where the sceneries were so delightful, the form emerged from a band of paper which embraced the space in one single material. The zig strip differentiate spaces, shape windows, skylight and gaps for natural light and air to flow through the entire house.
