BROADCAST CITY - - WO O D L AW N N EIGH B O RH O O D Urban Systerm Studio at Rhode Island School of Design Time : Apr.-May. 2016 Place : Pawtucket, RI, USA Duration : 8 Weeks Instructor : Elizabeth Dean Hermann Collaborator : Individual Work This work was done during 2016 Spring semester. In the beginning of the semester, I had a group work in this studio. In my group, I choose "Broadcast City" as the concept for my design. “Seeds” , emerging as forms of urban farms, will act as the important element in this urban re-development. In the new Pawtucket, all the “seeds” will grow up to be a , they will create a network which could to the city. A good living environment could attract more people to live there. At the same time, more people would bring more business to this city. Pawtucket used to be an industrial city. Its old textile industry has ended and a new form is needed for promoting this city's economy. In order to unite all the neighbothoods as a single unity, we could set up community centers that offer better service to the neighborhoods. Woodlawn Neighborhood is in the southeast of downtown Pawtucket. According to the investigation of this site, I find Woodlawn neighborhood has the same problem with other communities in Pawtucket. They all lack a place for people to gather. So I build a community centre for this site in order to create a gathering place, at the same time, this community centre will play a role of Urban Farm Centre which will have a function of teaching, marketing and exhibition.

1. SITUATION ANALYSES AND CONCEPT PROCESS Wo o d l a w n N e i g h b o r h o o d c o n n e c t s t o D o w n t o w n Pawtucket(Historical Area) on Main Street where a lot of important functional buildings locating on.While this connection is broken by the current land use and road system there. In order to reunion this broken land use. I decide to re-design the road system, at the same time, re-arrange the land use in this neighborhood.
Urban Farm will be used as the developing method for this urban updation.With the broadcast of urban farm area in Pawtucket, we could build a new form of industry which could help people use the vacant lots.

The original backyard was occupied by diffferent family and had a low efficient usage. With the dismantling of the old fence and no use buildings, we can create a new community garden, which would offer both public and private space for residents. This design could improve the efficience of usage of the land, at the same time, this public space could provide a good place for people to communicate.

02 GREEN RIBBONS Constructed Ground Studio at Rhode Island School of Design Time : Jan. 2016 Place : Providence, RI, USA Duration : 3 Weeks Instructor : Adam Anderson Collaborator: Individual Work This design is the final work of Constructed Ground Studio during 2016 wintersecssion at Rhode Island School of Design. The goal of this studio is to use landform as a tool for landscape creation. The site of this project is located along Providence River, which was the territory of Highway I95. Since Highway I95 changed its direction, this site has become an abandoned open space. In my design, I make use of landform to create different space for both animals and human. The landforms act as boundary of spaces and at the same time, they could offer habitats for animals and resting areas for human. According to the physical context of this site, these landforms will have different directions, so that visitors could experience a lot when they are lying on the slopes. The concept of this design is to ribbon the co-habitat. At first, a green ribbon, built along the riverside, acts as the habitat for animals. This ribbon is composed of 4 different landforms, at the same time, it offers 2 kinds of habitats for animals --- wet land and semi-wet land. Another ribbon grows in the middle of this site. This ribbon is composed of 3 landforms which create multiple activity spaces for human. These landforms face different directions to allow people resting there enjoying different views. The last ribbon locating along the road would give this site a private place. The landforms in this ribbon would be the planting bed for vegetation.

The concept of this design is to build an abstract green ribbon to connect human beings and animals. The green ribbons are composed of a lot pyramids that lying along both the riverside and the upper land. 03 TIDAL CLASSROOM Design Priciple Studio at Rhode Island School of Design Time : Nov.-Dec. 2015 Place : Providence, RI, USA Duration : 3 Weeks Instructor : Suzanne Mathew Collaborator: Individual Work This is the final project of Design Principle Studio. In the beginning of this project, I went to the site and had a interesting class about soil. After that, I used charcoal to make a drawing of soil profileďźŒwhich guided me to build the model of soil profile in the next step. I chose fabric mesh, hot glue and piano wires as my building materials. With the layering of mesh and the texture of hot glue, I had shown the soil profile, using only 3 materials, from the organic layer to the water table layer in my model. After this study of soil, I started to learn about the phenomenon on the site. The site is located at Tillinghast Farm which is along the sea. I first did a charcoal drawing of the long section for the site in order to depict its spatial experience. Next, I did some other phenomenon charcoal drawings that I thought were useful to my analyses. The classroom was required to be an open space but have a function of education of phenomenon. For my classroom, it will let people feel the tidal change on the site through the appearing of wall surface and the transforming of classroom area.

Soil profile in the Hole 5 which locates along the A-A' Section. After visiting TIllinghast Farm, digging the hole in the site, we find the current soil layers of Hole 5. With technical drawing of charcoal, I want to show the different phenomena in different layers.
With a lot of experiments of materials, I choose to use mesh as my major material to make a soil profile's model. Through testing of mesh, I found a way to show the different layers of soil.

04 CONSTRUCTION THRESHOLD Advanced Studio Part I at Rhode Island School of Design Time : Sep. 2016 Place : Frazier Terrace, Providence, RI Duration : 2 Weeks Instructor : Kathryn Foley, Yugon Kim Collaborator : Rebecca Ladd Ana Morataya Quan Angelica Carvajales This structure construction was done during the beginning of Advanced Studio. We worked as a group and discussed the definition of threshold. After that, we tried to build this fullscale model which shows our concept about threshold. Our main concept is " What you see is different from what you feel." We try to use the blind-point to create this threshold that could change people's feeling when they go through it. After this discussion of threshold, we began to visit our site in Boston and did an individual design of pavilion on site.

Threshold acts as an important connection between two spaces, which I think it should have characteristics of both spaces. From the first view, our threshold shows a 2D plane that connecting with ground , while you would have different experience on another side.

CONSTRUCTION THRESHOLD - - LO SS PAVILI O N Advanced Studio Part II at Rhode Island School of Design Time : Sep.- Dec. 2016 Place : Boston, MA, USA Duration : 6 Weeks Instructor : Kathryn Foley, Yugon Kim Collaborator : Individual Work This project is the development of last project which is a real threshold construction in Boston. In this individual work, I use "Loss" as the topic for the constrction threshold on the site to create an pavilion which will not only express the "lost" on the site but also the "lost" in our minds. Loss is a feeling that we may sometimes have. However, this feeling of loss is happening subtly that we may not notice that in our daily lives. A lot of stuffs are so common to us, but one day when we notice we have lost them, we will really miss them. But what leaves to us is a blurry memory of their shapes and we can never see them and touch them again. They just disappeated in the air like smoke. In this project, I chose to design this forgotten place located at the end of Fort Point Chanel in Boston offering place for people to contemplate. When going through from the outside into the pavilion, there are 3 kinds of spatial design aiming to provide a series of contemplation spaces, moving from the noisy urban environment into the quiet forgotten place. Utilizing the advantage of the sunken topography on site, Loss Pavilion can direct people’s view on some specific stuff, such as sky and water. The unique material choice and landform design could help people clear their minds and contemplate on themselves.

I like the shape of triangle which expresses a feeling of sharp but owns a special beauty with women. With the use of metal sheet, such as brass, bronze and silver, I develop my triangle concept into a series of jewelry design.
