Measurement: 1. Photocopy the pineapple to make the elevation of the pineapple. 2. Change the scale of the image into 1:2. 3. Delete the background so that the boundary of the pineapple is clear. 4. Print the image and trace it. 5. Cut the pineapple in two directions to reveal the sections. 6. Repeat step 2. Reason: This measuring method was chosen because the form of a pineapple is not a regular geometry. It is hard to measure and draw the angles and curves of the pineapple shape, thus photocopy and tracing is an accurate and efficient way to make the precise measurement.

Analysis

2D-TEXTURE ABSTRACTED FROM THE PINEAPPLE

Form: The “unit form” of pineapple is irregular pentagon. Those irregular pentagon grow in spiral way which is more easily to be abstracted by rhombus forms. Form: Triangle Direction: Radiation

3D-SPIRAL PATTERN OF PINEAPPLE The pineapple grew as the spiral direction in the space. Abstracted the pineapple as geometric forms, I found that the pineapple “units�, the patterns on the units and the leaves are all followed the spiral direction in the three dimensional space.

On the bottom of the pineapple, the geometric pattern is also in accordance with the spiral direction.

There are two ways to create the spiral pattern. The first way is to rotate a spiral line around a circle. The second method is to rotate a circle around the point. The most interesting result I found is that single form can create different and complex shapes by transformation like rotation.

Digital Modelling Process

Step 1: Import the Section image and trace the curve.

Step 2: Revolve the curve around the axis.

Step 3: Use paneling tool to set the Surface Domain Number.

Step 4: Draw the 2D pattern and panel 2D grid.

Step 5: Draw a curve and extrude the curve to a point. Bend and offset the surface.

Step 6: Polar array the leaves around the central point. Change the scale and shapes of leaves.

Step 7: Move the leaves to the body of the digital pineapple.

Step 8: Change the color of layers.

Step 9: Select objects and add materials to the objects.

Step 1: Draw and cut the plan of triangle and pyramid on the cardboard.

Step 3: Stick the pyramids and triangles together.

The main idea for the reconfigured pineapple is to create a volume by single units of surfaces. I chose half of the pineapple to explore because the form could be seen as a shell with protection, which is matched with the second skin topic. It can protect hands, face, head and upper body in different scale.

Step 2: Stick the sides to bond the pyramid.

Step 4: Create half of the reconfigured pineapple shape.

Sketch Design #1 VISIBILITY / FLEXIBILITY / PROTECTION

Distance Level #1 The pattern is consist of quadrangles and triangles.

Distance Level #2

The volume covers from the head to the shoulders and it produces two levels of personal distance.

The different personal space is produced by different connection of quadrangles and triangles.

Top View The volume reveals the user’s face, so that the user can have normal communication while keep his/her preferred personal distance to different people. The material should be cardboard (paper) in order to maintain the three dimensional geometric form, which preserves the wearer with proper personal territory.

The volume protects the sensitive part of human bodies. The adjustable design allows individuals to adjust personal distance in different occasion.

Sketch Design #2 BARRIER / ISOLATION / COMFORT

The volume is similar to a dome structure, which allows the movement of the upper body and provides enough private space for the wearer.

The volume is produced by a majority of units with a series sizes of holes to ensure the visibility and ventilation for the user.

The material for the volume should be light, so plastic or paper is reasonable.

The volume allows the movement of the wearer inside the volume. As a barrier, it keeps enough personal distance from people’s interruption.

Sketch Design #3 DEFENCE / ASSEMBLY / DECORATION

The volume extends the chest and back to provide protection and defense for wearer.

The basic form for the volume is triangular pyramid. There are different sizes of voids on the surface in order to enhance the ventilation and comfort.

The “tail“ can be taken off as a “weapon“ for defensive purpose. As the second skin, it is also a decoration for the appearance in normal occasion.

The volume extends the upper body and keeps private distance for the user. It also has the defensive function to makes the individual feel secure.
