1.0 UNDERSTANDING

POINT LINE PLANE Point line and plane can be considered as the basic understanding of architecture. Definition: I define this concept as the process of a point slowly transforming into a line and eventually with enclosing connected lines it becomes a plane. A point can be considered as the location or the beginning of a form. These points do not occupy the space in which it defines. It is simply the start and end of the architectural form. The line can be considered as the joining of two locations. It is the commencement of the space bounded by the points. It is the continuity of points, and it bounds the area where the points are located. The plane is the beginning of the deliberation of the space that is defined by both the point and the line. A plane can only exist when the end and the start of a line meets. It is the third element that requires the coordination of the first two elements.

1.2 DESIGN CONCEPT

I undertook the idea of point line and plane as a developing process, where dots slowly progress into a line and ending in the form of a plane. Dots were used as the coordinates or the positioning of a structure. These dots are only visible on the top view, for they are extruded on a vertical axis. Overall dots are the commencement of a structure, it pinpoints the location and determines the area it covers. The element line is visible from all views, it is the centre element that connects dots and plane into one system. A line can be formed in various ways. A continuous pattern of dots forms a line, the joining of two dots is also another way to form a line. In the model, the line is the flexible element that unites the 3 components into one structure and system. Planes are brought together by connecting the beginning and end of a line, It can be considered as the final stage of the transformation from a dot to a line and to the plane.

MASS Mass is generally defined as a sum of a certain property and it can also be defined as the heaviness or density of an object. In architectural definition, it is to be considered as the piling of materials and sensation of confinement within or around a space. Mass in architecture is also about creating contrasts, these contrasts of mass evolves around individuals’ visual perception and the physical experience inserted by the surrounding. Forms of contrasts focused in this design process involves the comparison between light and darkness, narrow and spaciousness, also addition and subtraction. As different forms of comparisons exist in the topic of mass, these groups of differences are generally interrelated with one another, thus juxtaposing varied spaces to evoke different experience. In general the representation for mass can be illustrated through a mixture of shades of black and even the shading of various colours.

2.3 DESIGN CONCEPT

The themes discovered in the idea of Mass all have a strong correlation with one another. The first theme identified is “Narrow and Spaciousness”, it is linked closely with the theme of “Light and Darkness, for the more confined space is, the less light is accessed. Presented in the drawing, a dull and confined space is illustrated with a shading of dark colours, these colours are only used to represent the spaces in between the constructed or the built spaces, which can be reflected as a compact space. During my testimony of utilising different medias, I discovered that it was possible to create mass within another mass. The underground space created was a dim space that was subtracted from the foundation, it represented mass as it is surrounded by a pile of material; soil. Moreover, the narrow spaces between these underground compartments also resembled the concept of mass explored in my design. Thus resulting in the discovery of creating “mass within another mass”.

FRAME AND INFILL The frame and infill system can be the necessary process to the built form of a structure. A frame is determined as a permanent structure that is fixed or stationary; it is an objective factor that is not influenced by other factors. A grid usually represents the frame system; it can perform as the outline of a building or the primary structure of the building. The infill component is transient and fluid, unlike frame, it is a dynamic property that is always in a constant changing state. It is also subjective meaning other matters can influence it. In this stage of design, the focus will be made through an emphasis on the use of a grid to highlight the outline of the structure and to use colour to symbolise the dynamic properties in the design.

3.2 DESIGN CONCEPTS

When the design was first established a four by four cube was produced, it is used as a guide for the inputting of Smaller cubes. These smaller cubes are designed to be the fixed and primary structure. The small cubes overlapped each other on a positive diagonal horizontal and vertical linear axis. The overlapping system is applied to form an interlinking system where individual cubes are linked together.

Transparent colour elements were incorpo selected were all primary colours, the d the structure are created by overlaying hence, resulting in the appearance of se The idea of this overlapping system is de understanding the composition strategy “M

orated, the colours dynamic parts of g primary colours, econdary colours. eveloped through Moire.

Strings were another component included into the design, it is the joining parts of the design. It followed the strategy of adjacency and resolution, which was about using different properties to form one system, in this case, it would be the coloured material and the string that weaves through it. It is considered as a resolution strategy because it is designed to have a purpose of unity through connecting individual elements together.

The black coloured paths that weave within the external structure is influenced by the previous Mass drawing, where the idea of narrow and spaciousness was followed, the path varied in size as it slowly moves up, with some parts wider and some areas narrower.

3.2 DESIGN CONCEPTS

The rule involved in design structure consists of displaying every primary colour once on each elevation, and the secondary colours are to be shown only once. These rules are embedded to create a unique structure and pattern which was defined in the Moire strategy.

4.0 Herring Island

Herring Island is a small man made Island that is locate 3 kilometers aways from the city. The island is only accessible by boat, it is bounded by the Yarra River and its natural environemnt contasts with its neighbouring constructions. The island is also the home of a number of intriguing man made sculptures and the gallery located on the island display various artworks by local artists.

Noise on Island

Noise on Roads

1. Considering from a larger context, analysing the behaviour and noise level on neighbouring roads. On a smaller scale, noise level is measured to indicate the most busy areas occupied by visitors.

2. Analysing the island as a whole, this is done through understanding different attractions in the Isle and th visitors took while they were exploring. The search for possible hiding places was considered, as some loc better when hiding in a smaller scale than a larger scale. Hiding in a smaller scale meaning hiding away from something on the island. Hiding on a larger scale means hiding away from someone or something from a lar (suburb). The chosen site is the hiding spot for both large and small scales.

AND SITE ANALYSIS

3. Preserving the natural element of the island is important when considering a secret in such context. These natural barriers were embedded for creating shade and green landscape, so it was important to consider minimising possible destructions to this asset of the island.

4. The natural light source was also considered, for the changes that occur during a day may also influence the possible change within the structure of the design. All of these analysis were considered when selecting the best location for the pavilion. The main influences of such decision was the noise level in the Island and the hidden places within the Island. A noise low environment was to be selected, a place that was hidden but still allowed the access of light was to be selected as well.

5.0 Conceptacle

5.0 ASSEMBLING

The conceptacle was designed through deriving ideas developed in the three tectonics. 1. Point line plane: The idea of how a point can slowly progress and develop into a plane. 2. Mass: The idea of narrow and spaciousness 3. Frame and infill: Moire idea where two systems overlap to form one system. In point line and plane, the idea of a point transforming into a plane was focused, drawing the idea of a change within its progression. Moreover, in the mass drawing, ideas such as narrowness and spaciousness, light and darkness, and addition and subtraction was considered. Although they vary in their properties they all share a link that works in one system. The contrasts between these ideas will be displayed in the conceptacle. In frame and infill, the moire composition strategy was a dominant component in its process of design, this strategy will be carried in the conceptacle and when systems overlap they will create one unique system.

5.1 SECRET

The secret is revealed when light passes and hits at a specific time point, and as the light passes through the primary coloured elements the secondary colour will be reflected and revealed. The behaviour of the enclosed part of the structure will differ in various ways depending on the direction of the light source.

6.2 PRECEDENCE

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is a well-recognised public gallery that sits along St Kilda Road. The facade of the structure seems monolithic in a simplistic manner. Compare with its surrounding architecture in its area it is dominant, for the exterior of building gives little information of what is displayed internally. Thus, its ambiguous exterior inserts a feeling of curiosity and drawing visitors to explore its space within. The effect applied on its external structure will be considered for the design of the secret pavilion.

6.3 THE FIRST ENCOUNTER The Exterior is largely influenced by the NGV, but the purpose of the pavilion is to keep or reveal A secret. In this design process the concept of revelling a secret will be considered. The existence of a secret is valued when clues or small indications are provided.

The monolithic like concrete wall that is displayed on the exterior of the building aims to generate curiosity to visitors by providing little information.

Recognising a transparent structure that sits in the east elevation of the exterior wall. It is contrasted with the concrete walls to suggest the possible existence of a diverse structure behind the walls. This transparent structure will be recognised as a store later on. Revealing on the facade of the building, it is aimed to provide a hint and invite visitors to explore the space within. Peak hole one: visitors will see a dull space that is the decision space.

Peek holes: Small opening on the exterior of the pavilion will provide visitors hints to the interior of the pavilion. Some peak holes provide less information compare to the other.

Peak hole two: is where the visitors can see the store. PEAK HOLE 1

6.4 THE JOURNEY TO THE SECRET Upon stepping through the first entrance, visitors are introduced to this space where they are to decide whether to go right or left. This decision-making area is isolated by the front and back walls, it is a confined space that contrasts with its surrounding. The design of this area is influence by the idea of contrasting a narrow and open space.

SECTION A

6.5 KIDS ONLY The spaces design for kids is visible to everyone it is located underneath the surface of the right sided space. The only way to enter this space is when they make a decision to go through the left sided door in the decision space. The entrance to the kids space is rather narrow but because it invites light into the space, it is no longer curiosity and confinement they experience but rather an approachable space that may seem fun and interesting. As kids explore around their space, parents are to watch and perceive from above, where kids crawl beneath them.

KIDS ROUTE

6.6 RULES OF THE SECRET The colour yellow is consider to be the division pieces. It works with the colour blue to produce the secondary colour green. It is positioned in between the two shared spaces to filter the two spaces from opposing sides to alter literal visual properties from the two sides.

Blue is considered the illusion part of the colour system, it functions under the influence of the yellow and red colour systems. The product of blue and red is the core secret for this pavilion.

Red is only seen once on the pavilion, the colour acts individually and it is a vibrant colour that usually symbolises the idea of importance. Insisting upon the idea of a secret is only recognised and valued when clues are include, this colour attempts to attract visitors and generate a sense of curiosity with its single existence.

6.7 SEARCH OF THE SECRET The theme of exploration and progress is vital in the design of this pavilion. By distancing the entrance to the underground area of the pavilion, visitors are invited to search for the entrance to the underground through the exploration of the island. Adding such journey in the finding of the secret, the landscape existing on the island also becomes a highlight to individuals’ experience.

6.7HE FINAL CLUE The colour blue appears once again, as the rule suggest it is to mislead people’s eyes. The entrance to the underground area is mislead. With a false looking door that is aligned on the side of a box like structure. The simplicity in such structure provides a intriguing insight as visitors are to discover the hidden staircase located behind the box. A staircase leading to the secret, is designed in a narrow manner, this is done to generate the experience of the initial encounter in the decision space.

6.9 REVEALING THE SECRET The secret is hidden underground, it is revealed at a certain time where a light source passes through the system of colours. The behaviour of the underground environment changes in accordance with the change occurring during a day.
