INDIVIDUAL WORK TUTOR: Jose Garcia, LI Shencai When you’re in the tunnel, you can hear your voice bouncing of the stone walls. Every voice is quiet and captured. The bats in the next tunnel can be heard, or maybe just the sound of pigeons hiding in the holes of the broken stones. I wonder if you could hear me whispering from the other side of the tunnel. Then you see the lights fired to the ceiling, flicking on as you slowly pace yourself through the space. It’s very dark in front, where you’re not close enough to trigger the lights. All you see is an aura of light from the other side. You can also smell the moisture of the air, condensing in your nostrils, making your nose tingle a bit

Location: Saint Martin District, Barcelona, Spain

Parterner: ZHENG Chi, LIU Xiaoqi The concept of urban renewal is a popular topic. However, the demands of city is constantly changing and its speed is much faster than the regular construction period, which leads to the failure of the urban renewal strategy. After a deeper study of the “metabolism” theory, I want to create an intelligent urban renewal mode to provide some ideas for future urban research. Through the reconstruction, the city will have the ability to make spontaneous changes to cope with different needs, and this change can be completed in an hour. Different functions are combined according to the needs to meet the urban requirements. The objective of this project is to exploring ways to solve the fundamental problem of urban renewal.

THEORY EXPLORATION

GRAPHIC TRANSLATION In order to realize my Initial vision, I studied and applied the research of Cedric Prices and David Greene. Through graphic translation, I transformed their practices into my own prototype form.

Through the research of Cedric Prices' famous theory "Fun Palace", the basic form of “Frame” is proposed. The frame structure is variable and interconnected, clearly embodying two characteristics of the vision: “relevance” and “variability”.

Through the study of ‘s "Living Pod", the basic form of Unit is proposed. Units can be freely combined and exist in the "container".(Here, the "container" is simplified to a horizontal component that can be attached)

Metal Frame

Electromagnetic Roller Blind The six faces of the unit are enclosed by a magnetic roller blind which can be controlled through the "magnetic field". And the casing is built into the structural rods to achieve complete closure and opening of the roller blind. The roller blinds are made of special flexible metal, which is hard and firm under normal conditions, but will become soft under energization which can be bent and twisted.

Variable Building Unit According to the research practice of HEXY from AA SCHOOL, the prototype is extracted and reorganized under the requirements of the new technology and the program to obtain the "building unit". Stored inside the structural rods, each "building unit" has sensors that can be wirelessly controlled by the magnetic field.They can move through their own deformations, and they can be combined and fixed to form different types of builds according to the needs.

Transportation Of Water And Electricity The generated power is supplied to the "storage box" to supply power to the function blocks, generating magnetic force, and then completing the movement and fixed activities of the unit body. The water is first transported by the “water tank unit” or other unit body to the “transport water tank”, and then transported through the water pipe to the “storage water tank”. The “storage water tank” delivers water to the room through the branch pipe.

UNIT BODY The basic unit is composed of component systems such as maintenance components, moving components, furniture components, and equipment components. The existence of these components ensures that the unit can be assembled into an effective space. The energy of the system is provided by the wireless magnetic field in this project.

FORM RULES Basic unit and building unit have their own separate form rules. The basic unit creates space through transport, move and combination. The building unit moves, rotates, and climbs through its own deformation. Each building unit is equivalent to a brick, which can be combined to form various shapes.

The Section Of Street Frame The "Street Frame" is formed by two main part: The Lower and the Upper. The Lower part is the structural layer which is light steel construction in order to realize the super span. What's more, The structure contains magnet tracks inside to move and fix the unit.

Street Frame The "Street Frame" is the "Container" for units. And also it is a vibrant public place for people to communication, learn, relax, and enjoy. Its main part is structure which is the entrance to units and also an Enclosed space for people to active.

UNIT DETAIL The "unit" is divided into two types: the "Basic Unit" and the "Functional Unit". Their outer structural frames are the same, but the capabilities are different. For example, the "Water Tank Unit" shown here is used to supply water.

Basic Unit The basic unit is the most important unit in the Dynamic Planner System. The size of basic unit is 6X6X6 M. The double-layer steel structure forms the skeleton and various functional components are embedded. These functional components make it have the ability to create suitable spaces. It can form space independently, and can also be combined with other basic units to form various types of space according to demand.

Water Tank Unit Water tank unit is one of the functional units. Its main function is to provide water for the space created by the basic unit. It has the same structural outer frame as the basic unit, but the core position is a water tank which can fit this outer frame. Water is transported through many shaped water pipes built into the double-layer rigid skeleton, providing the material basis for the space.

This frame is the auxiliary structure of the "Core Frame", and also, it supply power wirelessly to the Design Area by the magnetic field. which can be adjusted according to the demand of the Console system to save energy and maximize system efficiency.

JOKE OF HISTORY The urban development process is always repeated.CENTRALIZATION and DECENTRALIZATION trends always alternate in history. In my vision, in order to achieve the most thorough DECENTRALIZATION, It needs a huge mechanical giant system to support. These mechanical giants, Jokingly returned to a new round of "CENTRALIZED" worship.

UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION The text and graphics below illustrates DP. System's underground constructions. These are super-scale structures including operation room, unit room, magnetic coil, power system, power transport, frame support system, etc. They are the basement of the DP.S, They demonstrate the feasibility of DP.S.

DISTRICT COASTLINE

Area Division The design area is about 2/3 of the Sant Marti area, we can see that through the above graph. The vision I want to achieve is a decentralized system where people can live just like in the community. Therefore, I didvided this design area into several different part. These parts are connected to each other through a regional chain which ensure the correlation between regional blocks.It is worth mentioning that I deliberately broke the original regular block division of the santmarti area. By this, I hope to eliminate the separation between blocks and then let them mix together.

Transmission Tube The power transmission tube that delivers the energy generated by the "POWER PLANT" to various parts of the system.

Power Plant The huge power plant that produces electricity is the source of energy input to the system. It produce electricccity and then transport it to the various parts of this system.

Frame Support The underground part of "Auxiliary Frame" which has two main device: Power transmission and mechanical power. They realize the fuction of "Auxiliary Frame" to produce magnetical field to supply power wireless and to move "Auxiliary Frame" up or down.

Central Brain The brain of DP.S System. The function of it includes analysis, central control, management, unit manufacturing, unit storaging and unit movement, etc. And each "community" has three or even more brains whose forms are different, but they are organized according to a topological relationship. Core Frame The underground part of "Core Frame". It is the beginning part of the unit into the DP.S. Unit Plant The place to manufacture and repair unit, and then the unit will be transported to "Storaging Room" or "Core Frame".

Unit Storehouse The place to store unit, which is the flexible supplement fot the Dynamic Planner System. Central Management The place to manage and control the DP System. There are artificial intelligence to control the whole system but also people need to work there to manage it. Power Distribution It is responsible for receiving power from the Power Plant and transmitting it to each part of "Central Brain". Underground Coil Shown below is the section and axonometric of "Underground Coil". Its function is to provide a magnetic field for the field to offset the gravity of the "unit".

Like so much modern transport infrastructure that disrupts and divides neighbourhoods, and the many forgotten spaces underneath, this viaduct has created a series of disconnected leftover spaces varying in height, scale and possibilities. There are some recent attempts of varying success -new buildings, a park and well-tended community gardens, but there could be more. The environment adjacent to, and underneath the viaduct can be reimagined to improve the public benefit and repair the urban condition.

Museums were a product of the Renaissance, a product of an aristocratic and hierarchical society which believed that art and scholarship were for a closed circle. Museums used to be places that invited visitors to learn about great works of art, to understand their society, and to know more about the course of history. Transmitting knowledge to an essentialized mass audience

Rather than as ruins of a lost past, certifying its demise, museum objects have turned into the material hinges of a potential recovery of shared meanings, by means of narrativization and performativity. In response to feminist, postmodern and postcolonial critiques, objec ts, collec tions and processes of musealization have been radically re-signified and reposited in the cultural arena. The transformation of the museum from a site of worship and awe to one of discourse and critical reflection that is committed to examining unsettling histories with sensitivity to all parties.

Enhanced community self-determination and increased par ticipation in decision-mak ing processes and democratic structures. (Sandell, 2002: 7). In these spaces individual life-stories are attributed significance beyond the purely private: autobiographical story-telling is part of the museum's newly perceived function of giving voice to the individual fate and transforming bystanders and later generations into secondary witnesses . Instead of transmitting knowledge to an essentialized mass audience … , listens and responds sensitively as it encourages diverse groups to become active participants in museum discourse. … Most importantly, the postmuseum is a site from which to redress social inequalities’ (Marstine, 2006: 19)

The shifts in collecting and exhibiting practices associated with the transformation of traditional history museums into ‘spaces of memory’. Many ‘new museums’ redefine their functions in and for communities as spaces of memory, exemplifying the postmodern shift from authoritative master discourses to the horizontal, prac tice -related notions of memor y, place and community. In order to do so, the museum cannot simply rely on the aura of the authentic object as a window onto the past, but deploys multi-medial technologies and performance as strategies of narrativization associated with art forms such as literature or film. The stated aim is to facilitate experiential learning, to invite emotional responses from visitors and to make them empathize and identify with people from the past or with their living contemporaries inhabiting alternative modernities in distant places, as if reliving their experience, in order to thus develop more personal and immediate forms of affective engagement and imaginative investment.

Mix Use Building Steve Suprenant of HDR Architecture defines mixed use as ‘an appropriate combination of multiple uses, inside a single structure or place within a neighbourhood, where a variety of different living activities (live, work, shop and play) are in close proximity (walking distance) to most residents.’(Alpert D, 2010) Steven Holl said that in mixed-use ‘interlinking does not exist, nor does the grafted of activities. Relationships are not meant to increase personal conta1ct or exchange. The resulting volume is obtained by adding simple containers that with no control take up land and are attracted among themselves exclusively by the colour of money.’ (Holl, Hybrids II, p 21)
