Urban culture

This project is the graduation work of urbanism Master study in TU Delft. The main aim is to explore how university can be integrated with the city by urban design. Chinese cities is under intense urbanization process, the site selected is urban periphery area which is and still will be the most dynamic urban area under the transformation in terms of society, economy, and also urban space. As we all know, China now is the ‘world factory’. I believe it will not last a long time. Learning from western experience, the city will also be transformed with the inevitable changing of economy. Therefore, I focus on the urban spatial transformation caused by the transformation from industrial economy to knowledge economy which I believe will be the right direction for the development of Chinese industrial cities.

- All in the living area Concept - integrate ‘technology’ and ‘urban culture’ elements Technology Global knowledge service

Why choose south as study area - strategic location in regional perspective - more spatial problems: natural barrier

South bank - KNOWLEDGED PERIPHERY - agglomerate high-tech industry and university

University High-tech industry park

River as spatial barrier block the integration of south bank with the city

South bank as KNOWLEDGED PERIPHERY is a new part of Shenyang with less than 15 years history. Therefore, besides the improvement of living quality of the south and to connect south with traditional downtown are two main focus points in this thesis.

Two routes connect south bank with the city

3D city - diversity / dynamic / 3 dimentions Concept

Criteria Dynamic pyramid - Human activity

Necessary activities (shopping route) The things that have to be done: Going to school, waiting for the bus, shopping and going to work. These activities occur regardless of the quality of the physical environment because people are compelled to carry them out. Zoetermeer provides good conditions for many necessary activities and will retain and strengthen these activities over time.

Optional activities (recreation route) Activities people are tempted to do when climatic conditions, surroundings and the place are generally inviting and attractive. These activities are especially sensitive to quality. They only occur when quality is high. We want Zoetermeer to be characterized by a multitude of optional activities. People come to town, find the places attractive and stay for a shorter or a longer while. A great, attractive city can always be recognized by the fact that many people choose to spend time in the public spaces.

Social activity

Optional activity

Social activities (cultural route)

Necessary activity

Physical urban public space

These activities occur whenever people move about in the same spaces. Watching, listening, experiencing other people, passive and active participation. And also appreciate the idea of other people. We propose Zoetermeer offers a wide range of necessary as well as attractive optional activities, and because many people use the city, there are many people to experience, watch and speak to. The city becomes a lively and wonderful city. A people city.
